The Darkness are an English rock band from Lowestoft, Suffolk, formed in 2000. The band consists of Justin Hawkins (lead vocals, guitar), his brother Dan Hawkins (guitar, backing vocals), Frankie Poullain (bass, backing vocals) and Rufus Taylor son of Queen drummer Roger Taylor on drums.The Darkness came to prominence with the release of their debut album, Permission to Land, in 2003. Backed by the singles "I Believe in a Thing Called Love", "Growing on Me", "Get Your Hands off My Woman", and "Love is Only a Feeling",the album was certified quadruple platinum in the United Kingdom, with sales of over 1,300,000.In 2004 the band won three Brit Awards: Best British Group, Best British Rock Act, and Best British Album.After extensive touring in support of their debut album, Poullain left the band in 2005, and was replaced by former guitar technician Richie Edwards. It didn’t help that the record with which they announced their return was a lesson in how not to make a comeback album – not so much 'Hot Cakes' as 'Lukewarm Buns'.After a baffling, if doubtless fun, tour supporting Lady Gaga, you could have forgiven them if they’d slinked back to Lowestoft to see out their days manning the change booths in the Stardust Amusement Arcade.Thankfully, The Darkness are made of sterner stuff.Even better, they’ve only gone and made their finest album since 'Permission To Land' gleefully dropped its leather strides in the sixth-form common-room that was pop charts.If you’ve heard lead-off single 'Barbarian', you’ll have a sense of exactly how The Darkness have reconnected with what made them so much fun first time around. A heroically daft Viking-themed pocket-epic, 'Barbarian' has the brass balls to forsake anything approaching a traditional chorus in favour of Justin Hawkins wailing ‘Aah-aaah-aaaaah-aah’ at the top of his lungs. It’s more Noggin The Nog than Games Of Thrones, and all the more brilliant for it.In some respects, 'Barbarian' is a red herring. The rest of the album suggests they’ve relocated their ability to write an actual killer chorus.There are at least half-a-dozen of the buggers here, not least first single proper 'Open Fire' and the Thin Lizzy-fronted-by-Mickey Mouse title track.Even better is the genuinely batshit-crazy 'Mighty Wings', which attempts to splice together Spinal Tap’s Stonehenge and Metallica’s Sad But True while a man who sounds like he’s having a car door repeatedly slammed on his gonads yelps over the top.So sky-high is their confidence that they even let bassist Frankie Poullain have a go at singing on lighters-aloft closing ballad 'Conquerers'. Amazingly, it’s one of the best things here.The Darkness’ return to form is a welcome surprise in these apocalyptically drab times. And even if the world turns its face away from them, at least they’re going to go down screeching."Last Of Our Kind" rocks, it's fun, tongue-in-cheek for the most part, and bleeds glam from every pore.

Prepare to be amused, for The Darkness are back with their hilarious new album Pinewood Smile on Friday, October 6, 2017 through Cooking Vinyl. Even the title is a parody, Pinewood is the British Hollywood and the scene is very different from Los Angeles, California.Their fifth overall studio album, Pinewood Smile was written in Putney, some 20 miles from Pinewood Studios and recorded in the tranquility of Cornwall. Before going any further, for those unfamiliar with the history of the band, Justin Hawkins (vocals/guitar) and his brother Dan Hawkins (guitar) first formed The Darkness in 2003 in Lowestoft, UK. That same year, their debut album Permission To Land brought them multiple awards and adoring fans.At this point, they looked set to be the biggest band around, however, after their second album, 2005’s One Way Ticket To Hell…And Back, Justin checked into rehab and the band was put on hold. Reunited in 2011, with Bassist Frankie Poullain and adding Drummer Rufus Tiger Taylor in 2015, the band came back strongly with 2012’s Hot Cakes and 2015’s Last of Our Kind, as well as tours with Lady Gaga and Guns N’ Roses. The year of 2018 will see the launch of a Documentary on the band, but before then they are set to embark on a new tour, and oh yea, release Pinewood Smile!Jumping straight into Pinewood Smile, with truthful lyrics and cynicism born of a time in the limelight where fake is the norm, “All The Pretty Girls” is a rye look at relationships when you are a rockstar. It marks the album as a fun frolic, with the characteristic guitar solos and ’80s styled Rock that fans have come to expect from The Darkness. In a complete change of topic, “Buccaneers Of Hispaniola” is a pirate tune, swashbuckling and dynamic, energetic and fun. It hits a groove from the start that rhythmically holds your attention. Here, the vocals are so high they will make dogs howl, and the whole song is not for the likes of Disney. Next is the highly amusing and honest “Solid Gold,” which is as blunt as they come, when it comes to the realities of the music business. It is hard not to see the irony, though there is a school-boy level to the humor; it works well with Hawkin’s personality, which shines through the whole album. Furthermore, it rocks out with a solid drum beat that kicks, and a ’80s feel that makes you nostalgic for man perms. This is before by far the funniest and possibly most libelous track on, “Southern Trains,” a short, fast and furious condemnation of the customer service levels of the trains, and it appears to come from direct experiences. Presented as if an advert, or a jingle, this is pure genius.Changing it up, a melody of intense melancholy, “Why Don’t The Beautiful Cry” is a bittersweet contemplation of the shallowness of media, the music industry, and society in general. The harmonies are exquisite, and the mood created by the music is far more grown up, elegant, and sensitive than the lyrics. Continuing on with gritty riffs and darker vibes, “Japanese Prisoner Of Love” is comical, a parody about life in prison and the things that befall the prisoner.Moving right along, “Lay Down With Me, Barbara” is a love song. With the air of a different era, it is moody, atmospheric, sensual, and beautifully composed musically coupled with delicious guitar solos and a strange ending. Then, taking a look at the sadness of losing someone, on “I Wish I Was In Heaven,” Hawkin’s vocal writhes and contorts in agony as he imparts the emotion of the song. This is the one track that seems not to go off on a silly tangent lyrically, with real meaning and feelings. This is before the innocent, joyous “Happiness,” which is a silly, reminiscent, teen-dream styled song aiming a swift kick at the holiday romance scenario. It has everything that a novelty summer hit needs, but, unfortunately, it will be released in autumn.Lastly, for one of the most cutting, un PC, Country and Western songs ever, “Stampede Of Love” musically is a typical Country ballad. There is slide guitar and that traditional twang that screams Cowboys and Rodeos, meanwhile, the lyrics are a mocking story of love for a fat girl, with lines that will make you wince with horror that you are laughing at something so wrong. It finishes with a mad flourish, Punk-style, which can only be explained as someone giving the band triple espressos, blue smarties, and sugary energy drink and alcohol, before letting them into the studio unsupervised. A fitting end to the album.The Darkness are not a band to be taken too seriously, yet they are serious musicians, the guitar riffs are fine and the solos blistering. Furthermore, Rufus Tiger Taylor has a good pedigree on drums, as son of Queen drummer Roger Taylor, and the vocals are note perfect every time. This is fun though, it is to be enjoyed, and some of the lines will make you laugh out loud, and even when the humor is dark, it is never depressing. Each song is full of character, surprises, and wit. If you thought The Darkness were a spent force, time to think again.

The Darkness drop their first live album this week in the form of Live At Hammersmith, a beauty of a nineteen track collection of some of their finest work over the years. It’s a funny thing that it has taken this band so long to drop their first live album considering their reputation as a live act.These guys have had their trials and tribulations, but one thing that has been ever consistent has been their live form, outrageous from the off when they arrived on the scene with Permission To Land, The Darkness have never taken their foot off the gas since. Live at Hammersmith is a flawless performance from one of the UK’s finest ever bands that just showcases their strengths with a slick and immaculate recording that is jaw dropping at times.Hawkin’s banter with the crowd just completes the feel and vibe of being in the room with the lads, feeling the heat off the lights and with a first class production you’d be forgiven to thing you could almost reach out and grab yourself a handful of spandex, if you were so inclined.If you have been lucky enough to experience The Darkness live at some point this fine collection will come as no surprise to you, if you have yet to have your cherry popped by one of the Hawkins brothers, now’s the time. All your favorites’ and more are here in a sexy little package minus the aforementioned spandex, pity.

Well it’s come to that time of the evening for something a little bit different, Ladies and Gentlemen – The Darkness.If Freddie Mercury and Rob Halford got married and had a child, he would surely be Justin Hawkins. More metal than Freddie, a dash more opera than Halford and enough charisma for them both, Hawkins is the quintessential rock ‘n roll frontman. Just on a side note, if Halford and Mercury had married, imagine the wedding! An extravagant event – leather and studs combined with feather boas and red suspenders, flamingos on motorbikes roaring down the Champs-Elusees all to a soundtrack from the gods themselves.But I digress… Where was I?Oh yes, monsieur Hawkins… With a style that time forgot and infinite swagger the lovely lad from Lowestoft has shimmied into 2019 bringing Dan, Frankie and Rufus with him. The two years since 2017’s Pinewood Smile has felt like an eternity, but patience is a virtue etc. The wait is over, The Darkness are back and they’ve fucking cancelled Easter. ‘Tis a crappy holiday anyway – too much chocolate and not enough presents.We may not have Easter, but we do have 14 tracks of undeniable Darkness, with a little bit extra. The album kicks off with a nice acoustic intro and the news that ‘Rock and Roll Deserves to Die’, not really what I was hoping for to be perfectly honest. I was hoping for “we’re here to rock your fucking socks off!” The acoustic intro builds up to an inevitable scream and with that, the electricity and distortion are turned up to 11, now we’re rocking! There are few in the world who have a falsetto comparable to Justin Hawkins, when the front-man hits that awe-inspiring note you know The Darkness are back. By God are they back! If this is the song to kill rock ‘n roll its death will be a beautiful combination of stratospheric vocals, thundering drums and distorted guitars. But we know The Darkness have tongue firmly planted in cheek and they don’t really think rock deserves to die – or do they?As I mentioned although this album is undeniably The Darkness the lads have added something extra. This is more than the usual balls-to-the-wall slightly tongue in cheek glam rock we know and love. On this outing, they have gone, dare I say it, eclectic. Mixed in with rockers like the opening and title tracks we have ballads ‘How Can I Lose Your Love’ and ‘Heart Explodes’. Personally, I love a good power ballad, done well they can be an album highlight and these two don’t disappoint. Just before the midway point is the curious ‘Deck Chair’, at just two minutes it’s over almost as soon as it begins. A strange almost theatrical track that wouldn’t be out of place on Queen’s A Night At The Opera, hardly surprising given drummer Rufus Tiger Taylor is the son of the legendary Roger Taylor. If Taylor’s heritage was an influence it’s interesting as there are no drums on the track, I guess it’s just another riddle wrapped in spandex. So très charmant my dear…That’s just what this album is, a riddle wrapped in skin tight butt-hugging spandex. Curious theatre and galloping guitars give way to an adolescent journey of life, love and long hair. The 14 year old in any hard rock fan can appreciate the sentiment of ‘Live ‘Til I Die’. The song wrenched me back (more than) a few years to a time when no one understood me, hair had to be long, music was the most important thing in life and above all – fuck the haters.This is a cliché, but this album really does have something for everyone. An eclectic mix of rock, punk, pop and even a whimsical history lesson. Easter Is Cancelled maybe my favourite release this year and with the announcement the band will play the full album on the upcoming tour I can’t wait to hear it live. If you haven’t already, 2019 is the year to embrace The Darkness because “… this stuff is fucking rocket fuel”

2023 marks the 20th Anniversary of ”Permission To Land” – THE DARKNESS‘ the chart-topping, award-winning, multi-platinum debut album originally released on July 7, 2003, and helped the Classic Rock resurgence this Millennium.To celebrate, Britain’s beloved rock band celebrate this landmark with “Permission To Land… Again“, a special 4-CD/DVD release including the original album remastered, rare B-sides, bonus unreleased demos, as well as live albums from their iconic shows at London’s Astoria (2003), Knebworth (2003) and Wembley Arena (2004). There will be as well a 2CD edition with a reduced track listing, but this box-ser is the complete experience.20 years later, listening to ‘Permission To Land… Again’, I feel the band’s genuinely impressive ear for melody a little more. The totality with which The Darkness embraced flamboyance is part of the reason their debut album succeeds. Their sense of humor is all over the record, but it’s a sense of humor that doesn’t base itself on mere parody. And they rock…Sifting through the demos and rarities packaged alongside the original album reveals little in the way of fascinating alternative directions the band might have pursued. On the early demos of songs that eventually made the album, the biggest deviations come in the form of a spoken word introduction set to an elfin chime at the beginning of the demo of ‘Black Shuck’, a glitzy synth part that clutters the chorus of ‘I Believe In A Thing Called Love’, and a slower, chunkier version of ‘Love On The Rocks With No Ice’ that benefits from the added heft.Similarly, the B-sides and bonus tracks in the new boxset offer mainly a re-affirmation of The Darkness’ straightforwardness. Rather than use away-from-the-spotlight releases as a chance to take away the pressure to conform to a certain sound (intriguing cowboy rock & roller ‘Curse Of The Tollund Man’ being the exception) they use them to double down.This can be for better – ‘Planning Permission’’s preposterous expression of love through the metaphor of building a conservatory, the rollicking stomper ‘The Best Of Me’ and the Powerage-indebted ‘Physical Sex’ – and for worse; often Hawkins’ effort to ramp up the rock & roll lands him at little more than caveman horniness as on the icky ‘Makin’ Out’.The most charitable way of viewing the B-side ‘How Dare You Call This Love’ meanwhile – sample lyric “You’re so young it’s obscene / I can’t wait for the day you turn 16” – is as a blunt satire of rock stars’ historic tendencies towards relationships with underage women.Thankfully such moments are in the minority. Taken as a whole the material collected here hasn’t aged an inch, the group were so at odds with the zeitgeist when they arrived in the first place, that they’re essentially able to sidestep the issue of sounding dated anyway.Most of all it merely strengthens the argument that The Darkness were a band who knew from the very start that they were to be all about immediacy; early pub gigs, by all accounts, were performed with the same bombast with which the band would later headline arenas.Of the three separate live recordings compiled on ”Permission To Land… Again”, supporting Robbie Williams on his huge summer 2003 shows at Knebworth, a high-intensity Astoria show and a triumphant Wembley headline set, it’s the first that makes the most interesting listening. Here, the band are heard playing to a crowd of 100,000, few of whom one assumes were actually there to see them, and in real time you can hear Justin Hawkins winning over vast swathes of them. Towards the end he asks outright who amongst them has been converted, receiving a great roar in response. “Everybody else, repeat after me,” he declares. “’I. AM. WRONG.’”

THE DARKNESS upcoming album ”Dreams On Toast”, set for a March 2025 release, marks a bold new chapter for the band. With their signature blend of flamboyant rock anthems and tongue-in-cheek lyrics, this album cements their place at the pinnacle of British rock.Expect soaring guitar riffs, infectious hooks, and a nostalgic yet fresh take on the genre that will resonate with longtime fans and new listeners alike.There’s a candid strategy to The Darkness’ albums that can be misconstrued as simplistic or, under worst circumstances, campy to casual observers. But they’re neither, despite the outside appearances.The British band, which exploded to prominence with their 2003 debut Permission to Land, finely tune their 1970s-inspired, glam-coated hard rock for maximum impact. There’s nothing simple about their methods.Still, the knowing wink behind Justin Hawkins’ classic rock moves is quick to spot after 22 years. The cover of the Darkness’ last album, 2021’s Motorheart, featured what can only be referred to as phallic-shaped mechanical creatures sprouting from a cosmic netherworld that was tied to a song about having sex with robots. It’s as if Roger Dean’s artwork turned pornographic instead of into fantasy.Similar amusing touches are all over the band’s eighth album, ”Dreams on Toast”, from its peculiar title to the opening track, “Rock and Roll Party Cowboy,” which somehow manages to encompass the exact hellbent-for-a-good-time attitude its name conveys.Yet they also reveal a heart beating beneath the spangled jumpsuits and soaring falsetto: “There goes thе best seven years of my life / There goes a girl who only saw me, not my influence or my wealth / There goes the only human being I have ever loved more than I hate myself,” Hawkins sings in the deceivingly peppy “I Hate Myself.”If Motorheart could be framed as a semi-concept album about relationships in the modern age, ”Dreams on Toast” bears no overriding theme other than have a good time and try to get out alive; if you can’t, that’s cool, too.It’s easy to name touchstones in the Darkness’ music, from “Rock and Roll Party Cowboy” and “Mortal Dread”‘s AC/DC boogie to the Beatles-via-Queen bounce of “The Longest Kiss” to “Walking Through Fire,” a love letter to the Darkness themselves.
But more than two decades from their debut, ”Dreams on Toast” proves the band is still charting a path of its own making.
