Bio:

John Charles Barrett (born October 28, 1953), known professionally as Desmond Child, is an American songwriter and producer. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2008. He has been nominated for four Grammy Awards, a Primetime Emmy Award, and has won a Latin Grammy Award. His hits as a songwriter include Kiss' "I Was Made for Lovin' You"; Joan Jett & the Blackhearts' "I Hate Myself for Loving You"; Bon Jovi's "You Give Love a Bad Name", "Livin' on a Prayer","Bad Medicine", and "Born to Be My Baby"; Aerosmith's "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)", "Angel", "What It Takes" and "Crazy"; Cher's "We All Sleep Alone" and "Just Like Jesse James"; Brit Smith's "Karma's a Bitch", recently redone by Jojo Siwa; Alice Cooper's "Poison"; Michael Bolton's "How Can We Be Lovers?"; and Ricky Martin's "The Cup of Life" and "Livin' la Vida Loca".Child's career started when he formed an R&B-influenced pop rock band, Desmond Child & Rouge in 1975 with singers Myriam Valle, Maria Vidal, and Diana Grasselli, backed by hired musicians. The band was known for their inclusion on the soundtrack to The Warriors in 1979, with the song "Last of an Ancient Breed", and for the song "Our Love is Insane", which charted at No. 51 in the Billboard Hot 100. Their two albums received positive reviews but sold poorly and the group disbanded in 1980.One member, Maria Vidal, had a hit in 1985 with "Body Rock".Child then worked with songwriter Bob Crewe for two years.Artists Child has worked with include Kiss, Cher, Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, Bonnie Tyler, Dream Theater, Roxette, Ricky Martin, Selena Gomez, and Kelly Clarkson.Desmond is credited with discovering Troy Curtis Tuminelli and recommending him to Edgardo Diaz before Tuminelli landed in Menudo, and, eventually, on Guiding Light. He was the key partner in Alice Cooper's album Trash (1989). He was also responsible for co-writing the Ratt album Detonator (1990).Child scored a Billboard Top 40 hit in 1991 as a solo artist with "Love on a Rooftop", a song he had co-written with Diane Warren, originally recorded by Ronnie Spector, and later by Cher. "Love on a Rooftop" also peaked at number 55 on the Australian ARIA Charts. He produced Meat Loaf's album Bat Out of Hell III: The Monster Is Loose, and co-wrote six of its songs.Child wrote the song "Believe in Me" for Bonnie Tyler in 2012 and one year later it was selected as the Eurovision Song Contest entry for the United Kingdom, where it finished in 19th place in the final. Following the contest, Tyler received two Eurovision Song Contest Radio Awards for Best Song and Best Singer, making her the first UK representative to win the award. Child was to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest again as a songwriter in 2022, co-writing and producing the Finnish entry, Jezebel, performed by the Rasmus. The song would go on to finish 21st in the final.Child was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2008.In 2013, he co-founded the Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame along with fellow Cuban-American composer Rudy Pérez.Desmond's autobiography, Livin' on a Prayer: Big Songs Big Life with David Ritz, was released September 19, 2023.

Album:

With the recent DESMOND CHILD album revisiting by himself his hits for other artists many of you asked for more Desmond. “Discipline” is the only solo full length album recorded by this gifted songwriter and producer. It was released on Elektra in 1991 and features his longer take on “Love on a Rooftop” a song he wrote for Ronnie Spector’s album Unfinished Business in 1987, later included in Cher’s studio album Heart of Stone. Child’s version reached number 40 on the US Billboard Hot 100, while the song “Obsession” peaked at number 19 on the Billboard AOR chart.Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora appears on the album; he co-wrote two tracks (“Discipline” and “According to the Gospel of Love”) also Bon Jovi’s drummer Tico Torres, Whitesnake / Def Leppard Vivian Campbell, Steve Lukather, and more.In the American music industry Desmond Child is a superstar, although it isn’t because of his singing. Child is much better known for his songwriting & producing and work with major artists like Cher, Bon Jovi, Joan Jett, Chicago, Roxette, and Aerosmith is what made him a huge name in the music world.Nonetheless, Child is a talented, expressive singer. He proved that in the late ’70s and early ’80s, when he led a great but underexposed group called Desmond Child & Rouge. And he demonstrated that again when, in 1991, he provided his first solo album “Discipline”. This Elektra release, which Child produced with Sir Arthur Payson, it’s pure ‘Desmond Child trademark music’, classy ’80s-sounding commercial rock: big guitars, big drums, big vocals, big hooks, and a very slick and glossy production style. While this CD came out 11 years after Rouge’s breakup, Child obviously hadn’t forgotten about his old group. “Obsession,” which Child co-wrote with Burt Bacharach, is a duet with former Rouge member Maria Vidal. And “Do Me Right” is a memorable power ballad that Child wrote for a little-known solo album that Vidal recorded for A&M in 1987.One of my favorites is the catchy, radio-ready “The Price Of Loving You” (recorded by Bonfire on their Point Blank album) which, despite not being a hit, it’s still being played on classic rock radio stations.Title track features Richie Sambora’s smooth guitar playing, while Lukather’s solo shine on “I Don’t Wanna Be Your Friend”.Not easy to find on CD nowadays and with poorly ripped / transcode versions floating the web, here’s our own CD take, complete with full artwork.

Album:

Japanese indie / club collectors label AOR Moon has just put out 2019 one of their own pressed CD’s with DESMOND CHILD solo material titled “Rarities”.The collection, as happens with this bootleg label, appeared with different track order depending the ‘press’ (these are limited editions) and include Child’s solo versions of the hit ‘Living On A Prayer’, his vinyl-only single from 1982, his contribution to ‘Warriors’ / ‘Shocker’ movie soundtracks, and more rare unreleased material. This compilation is interesting because it covers all Child solo releases as main artist / performer, which hasn’t been prolific. All songs here are sung by Desmond himself – Paul Stanley, Maria Vidal, Diana Grasselli and Myriam Valle help him on vocals on some songs, and Jon Bon Jovi does the leads on the rare ‘Livin’ On a Prayer vocal trax’.The gems here are the two versions of ‘Livin’ On a Prayer’ performed by Child. According to himself, here is performed as written, on the piano. This is how Desmond originally envisaged the mood and pace of his song, and perhaps like me you’ll agree that it’s way more impactive as a ballad than a rocker! Desmond’s also a damn fine singer too!As bonus, there’s an early 90s Live, and studio English / Spanish versions of the Diane Warren co-penned song “You’re the story of My Life”, one even performed by a young, unrecognizable Shakira.

Album:

The legendary songwriter / producer Desmond Child has now released his new live album, which can be found digitally via here, among others. This album is a must for all Desmond Child lovers. The anecdotes in between each songs are fun, the various medleys are well made (especially the one with the Ricky Martin hits) and the guest-singers are truly talented. I didn't put 5 stars only because too many hits from Desmond are missing (Poison, Just Like Jesse James, Heaven's On Fire, Before Your Love, etc...)! This unique songwriter has composed a ridiculous amount of great songs and a second disc would have been more than logic, making this a mesmerizing double album. But hey, if that's the only complaint.Desmond Child is the King of songwriting. Long live the king!

Album:

DESMOND CHILD & Rouge albums were repeatedly requested on this blog, even more with Desmond’s new album, so here it is their second and final record “Runners In The Night”, remastered by Rock Candy specialists with a pristine sound. As you may know, Desmond Child is the composer of numerous world wide smashes whose roll call of success includes songs performed by a plethora of top international talent from Bon Jovi (‘Livin On A Prayer’), Kiss (‘I Was made For Lovin’ You’), Aerosmith (‘Dude (Looks Like A Lady’), Alice Cooper (‘Poison’) and many more in between.Desmond Child’s influence on contemporary music is all encompassing and hugely influential. After the debut album with a poppy sound trying to hit the radio, Child wanted a more adult, FM Rock sound which was arising in the USA at the end of the Seventies. He was completely convinced that sound will rule the airwaves for the next five years… and he was right.“Runners In The Night” sounded distinctly rockier than its predecessor, with more electric guitar presence featuring some hot licks by session man G.E. Smith, who later showed up as axeman for Hall & Oates. All are strong tunes with a great melodic rock feel like ‘The Truth Came Out’ and ‘Tumble In The Night’. The AORish ‘Rosa’ is great too, while first track ‘The Truth Came Out’ is loud and kicking. My absolute favorite is ‘My Heart’s On Fire’ with its addictive melody and catchiness, and together with ‘The Night Was Not’ are instant classics and need to be put on any Desmond Child Best Of compilation. The title track is a slow rocker that could easily be reprised by today’s melodic rock bands, “Scared To Live” has a beginning riff that puts to shame several rock classics, and “Feelin’ Like This” will not suffer from any comparison with any good FM Radio hit from the Eighties.Desmond Child & Rouge “Runners In the Night” is generally regarded as the troupe’s finest moment, a record full of delightful twists and turns with a forceful melodic rock quotient that has been recognised as one of the genre’s most ambitious and impressive creations.Make no mistake, this is one of the best, if unheralded, AOR / MR releases of all time, especially for the songwriting / sound approach, which in grand part defined what was to come in this musical genre.
