John James Sykes (born 29 July 1959-2025) was an English rock guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter who has played with Streetfighter, Tygers of Pan Tang, John Sloman's Badlands, Thin Lizzy, Whitesnake, and Blue Murder. Sykes co-wrote the majority of the songs on Whitesnake's 1987 self-titled album with David Coverdale.Sykes is also a successful solo artist.Sykes joined Tygers of Pan Tang in 1980, and played guitar on the albums Spellbound (1981) and Crazy Nights (1982), as well as participating on two tracks for their 1983 release, The Cage.In 1982, John Sykes was recruited by former Uriah Heep frontman John Sloman, for his new band Badlands, alongside his future Whitesnake bandmate Neil Murray. This was to be short-lived however, as Badlands broke up shortly after formation. No music has ever been officially released, although bootlegs of rehearsals do exist. Sykes also auditioned, unsuccessfully, for Ozzy Osbourne's band following the death of Randy Rhoads.Sykes also auditioned for Ronnie James Dio's new band, Dio, to record on 1983's Holy Diver album but was unsuccessful, as Dio instead chose Sweet Savage guitarist, Vivian Campbell.At the age of 23, Sykes was asked by Phil Lynott to join Thin Lizzy, filling the spot left by previous guitarist Snowy White. He participated in the recording of the band's final studio album Thunder and Lightning, and contributed the track "Cold Sweat".Sykes toured with the band until the autumn of 1983 to promote Thunder and Lightning, from which the live album Life was recorded. Following the tour, Thin Lizzy disbanded.Sykes joined Phil Lynott for Lynott’s solo tour of Europe in a band dubbed The Three Musketeers featuring Lynott, Brian Downey, Scott Gorham, Darren Wharton, and Sykes.David Coverdale hired Sykes to join Whitesnake following the release of Slide It In in 1984. He re-recorded some guitar tracks for the US release, and toured in support of the album, culminating with the 1985 Rock in Rio festival.Sykes co-wrote the majority of the songs on Whitesnake's 1987 self-titled album with David Coverdale, and recorded the guitar as well as some backing vocal tracks. Near the end of the 1987 sessions Coverdale fired the entire band (allegedly because of personality clashes and matters of ego) and brought in Adrian Vandenberg to record the solo on "Here I Go Again".This was Whitesnake's most successful album, peaking at #2 on the Billboard 200 chart and selling over eight million copies in the United States alone. It contained the hit singles "Still of the Night", "Is This Love", "Give Me All Your Love", and "Here I Go Again" (the last was not a Sykes composition).After Coverdale fired the 1987-era band, Sykes went on to form Blue Murder with Vanilla Fudge drummer Carmine Appice and The Firm bassist Tony Franklin.After a demo was recorded with Ray Gillen on vocals, A&R executive John Kalodner encouraged Sykes to handle the vocal duties himself.Their self-titled debut album was a moderate success, but the 1993 follow-up Nothin' but Trouble did not fare as well. After two studio albums and a live recording, Blue Murder was put to bed and Sykes began recording and touring under his own name.In the years following Blue Murder, Sykes recorded several solo albums: Out of My Tree (1995), Loveland (1997), 20th Century (1997) and Nuclear Cowboy (2000). A song from 20th Century, "Cautionary Warning", was used in the anime series Black Heaven. The footage accompanying the song was rotoscoped from one of Sykes' concerts. Sykes' involvement in the series was the a feature of Pioneer USA's marketing.In 2004, the live album Bad Boy Live! was released, covering a number of "greatest hits" from Thin Lizzy, Whitesnake, Blue Murder, and his solo work.Sykes has made rare guest appearances on the Hughes Turner Project debut album on the track "Heaven's Missing an Angel", and later on keyboardist Derek Sherinian's 2004 solo album "Mythology", playing alongside Zakk Wylde on the track "God of War".

Last May, Universal Music Japan has started a reissue series of classic albums on SHM-CD, remastered and with a very affordable price. We ordered many and the first batch has arrived.Let's begin with the much sought after "Please Don't Leave Me" by the great JOHN SYKES.Composed by future Whitesnake guitarist John Sykes, "Please Don't Leave Me" was released as single under his name in 1982. The song features Thin Lizzy band members Phil Lynott on vocals and bass, Brian Downey on drums and Darren Wharton (later founder of Dare) on keyboards.Sykes joined Tygers Of Pan Tang in 1980, and played guitar on the albums Spellbound (1981) and Crazy Nights (1982), as well as participating on two tracks for their 1983 release, The Cage.But MCA Records saw potential in Sykes as solo artist, and gave him the opportunity to release "Please Don't Leave Me" as single to taste the waters.The single, including a terrific instrumental version of the song as B-side, was quite successful, however Sykes could not resist when, after recording the song together, Phil Lynott asked him to join Thin Lizzy as lead guitarist. He participated in the recording of the band's final studio album Thunder & Lightning, and contributed the track 'Cold Sweat.In 1983 David Coverdale hired Sykes to join Whitesnake and the rest is history...Ten years after of its original release and due to John Sykes' fame with Whitesnake and Blue Murder, "Please Don't Leave Me" was re-released in 1992, this time in the form of a compilation album that included a selection of non-album studio and live tracks from Sykes' tenure with Tygers Of Pan Tang.This is a great record featuring not only the great "Please Don't Leave Me" in its original, edited and instrumental version, but also a young Sykes (most of the material was recorded when he was 21 years old) plenty of fire, showcasing his awesome skills and how he evolved as player from here.Great remastering job on this SHM-CD, punchy but not brickwalled.

The album was recorded during a Japanese tour in April 2004.[1] The record features material from Sykes' solo career, as well as his time with Thin Lizzy, Whitesnake and Blue Murder.This CD is in memory of Uncle John Sykes and dedicated to a wonderful man and the "Original Deal Maker"- the one and only: Mr. STU RIC. Rest in Peace.

After Blue Murder disbanded, JOHN SYKES formed his own eponymous band, SYKES. His debut record, “Out Of My Tree,” came out in 1995. For the release of this album, he will hold a promotional concert in Los Angeles and record material for TV and radio broadcast.This was the very first SYKES concert, with a great line up including John (vocals, guitars), Marco Mendoza (bass, backing vocals), Tommy Osteen (drums, backing vocals) and Nick Green (keyboards).This concert “Live In Los Angeles 1995“, featuring two tracks from the new album, songs from Blue Murder, Whitesnake, and Thin Lizzy, is an “Anthology of John Sykes” at this point, and is a must-have for John Sykes / all his former bands fans.Unfortunately the recording never was officially released. There has been many bootlegs with different titles, however this is the best version we heard, with a very good sound quality.

Rare album “Blonde And Dangerous“, this is a bootleg CD but a great one compiling some rare, early Sykes material.The bootleg uses the cover of John Sykes’ solo single 1982’s ‘Please Don’t Leave’, and of course the song is included. We also find recordings from TYGERS OF PAN TANG Live BBC from 1981 when Sykes already joined the band.Of very special interest is the very early BADLANDS demo recorded in 1981, the song Sykes recorded with the band STREETFIGHTERS in 1980 which only was released on the ‘Electric Warriors’ compilation LP, and the live material with 3 MUSKETEERS – the short-lived band Sykes, Phil Lynott & Lizzy’s drummer Brian Downey formed for some gigs in Sweden 1984.

John James Sykes (born 29 July 1959-2025) was an English rock guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter who has played with Streetfighter, Tygers of Pan Tang, John Sloman's Badlands, Thin Lizzy, Whitesnake, and Blue Murder. Sykes co-wrote the majority of the songs on Whitesnake's 1987 self-titled album with David Coverdale.Sykes is also a successful solo artist.Sykes joined Tygers of Pan Tang in 1980, and played guitar on the albums Spellbound (1981) and Crazy Nights (1982), as well as participating on two tracks for their 1983 release, The Cage.In 1982, John Sykes was recruited by former Uriah Heep frontman John Sloman, for his new band Badlands, alongside his future Whitesnake bandmate Neil Murray. This was to be short-lived however, as Badlands broke up shortly after formation. No music has ever been officially released, although bootlegs of rehearsals do exist. Sykes also auditioned, unsuccessfully, for Ozzy Osbourne's band following the death of Randy Rhoads.Sykes also auditioned for Ronnie James Dio's new band, Dio, to record on 1983's Holy Diver album but was unsuccessful, as Dio instead chose Sweet Savage guitarist, Vivian Campbell.At the age of 23, Sykes was asked by Phil Lynott to join Thin Lizzy, filling the spot left by previous guitarist Snowy White. He participated in the recording of the band's final studio album Thunder and Lightning, and contributed the track "Cold Sweat".Sykes toured with the band until the autumn of 1983 to promote Thunder and Lightning, from which the live album Life was recorded. Following the tour, Thin Lizzy disbanded.Sykes joined Phil Lynott for Lynott’s solo tour of Europe in a band dubbed The Three Musketeers featuring Lynott, Brian Downey, Scott Gorham, Darren Wharton, and Sykes.David Coverdale hired Sykes to join Whitesnake following the release of Slide It In in 1984. He re-recorded some guitar tracks for the US release, and toured in support of the album, culminating with the 1985 Rock in Rio festival.Sykes co-wrote the majority of the songs on Whitesnake's 1987 self-titled album with David Coverdale, and recorded the guitar as well as some backing vocal tracks. Near the end of the 1987 sessions Coverdale fired the entire band (allegedly because of personality clashes and matters of ego) and brought in Adrian Vandenberg to record the solo on "Here I Go Again".This was Whitesnake's most successful album, peaking at #2 on the Billboard 200 chart and selling over eight million copies in the United States alone. It contained the hit singles "Still of the Night", "Is This Love", "Give Me All Your Love", and "Here I Go Again" (the last was not a Sykes composition).After Coverdale fired the 1987-era band, Sykes went on to form Blue Murder with Vanilla Fudge drummer Carmine Appice and The Firm bassist Tony Franklin.After a demo was recorded with Ray Gillen on vocals, A&R executive John Kalodner encouraged Sykes to handle the vocal duties himself.Their self-titled debut album was a moderate success, but the 1993 follow-up Nothin' but Trouble did not fare as well. He will be remembered as a man with exceptional musical talent not only with the guitar, but also singing and composing.Sykes delighted us since his time in Tygers Pan Tang in the early ’80s, in Thin Lizzy during which time the band released the impressive album Thunder and Lightning (1983), in Whitesnake for the recording of the group’s multi-platinum selling self-titled album (1987) and in Blue Murder where he also handled lead vocal duties during the late ’80s / early ’90s.As a tribute, here we have in exclusive JOHN SYKES “Live In Los Angeles 1995” in its “Alive The Live” series CD release only available in Japan (disc manufactured in Taiwan by King Records) featuring the complete show, including the previously unheard track ‘Riot’.After Blue Murder disbanded, JOHN SYKES formed his own eponymous band, SYKES. The debut record, “Out Of My Tree,” came out in 1995. For the release of this album, he will hold a promotional concert in Los Angeles and record material for TV and radio broadcast.This was the very first SYKES concert, with a great line up including John (vocals, guitars), Marco Mendoza (bass, backing vocals), Tommy Osteen (drums, backing vocals) and Nick Green (keyboards). This concert, featuring two tracks from the new album, songs from Blue Murder, Whitesnake, and Thin Lizzy, is an “Anthology of John Sykes” at this point, and is a must-have for John Sykes / all his former bands fans.Unfortunately the recording never was officially released. Here’s for the first time the full concert, including the song “Riot”. Many of you asked for JOHN SYKES last album “Sy-Ops” still unreleased. The album was completed some years ago with the likes of Tony Franklin (The Firm), Chris Chaney (Jane’s Addiction), Josh Freese (A Perfect Circle, Guns N’ Roses) in the recording line up – there were various announcements of release since 2015 but never materialized.None of the songs were officially released or available at streaming platforms – Sykes himself only shared 3 songs on YouTube: ‘Out Alive’, ‘Drawning For A Brand New Day’, and ‘Gates Of Hell’. In 2020, Sykes parted ways with Golden Robot Records without releasing a single record through the label.There was a low-res digital music press promo – the one feature here in exclusive – with the aforementioned complete songs, samples, plus an audio message from Sykes saluting the fans and promising “Sy-Ops” out soon.As extra, and exclusive too, we have a different mix / early version of ‘Out Alive’, sent to keyboardist Derek Sherinian for a possible guest appearance in the final recording.

John SYKES own band ‘SYKES’ debut album titled “Out Of My Tree“.The CD came with OBI that has 日本先行発売 characters which translates to “released in Japan prior to elsewhere”. Well, mid-90s were difficult time for this kind of classic hard rock, and eventually “Out Of My Tree” was released in Japan only.John Sykes, a phenomenal guitar player, singer and songwriter, king of sustain, helped propel bands like Thin Lizzy and Whitesnake to fame in the 1980s. After Whitesnake, Sykes formed awesome group Blue Murder with drummer Carmine Appice until 1994, then launched a solo career and formed his band “SYKES”.“Out Of My Tree” is an album where Sykes was fully involved, from songwriting to production – a true ‘solo’ album. And a killer one.Take as example opener “Soul Stealer”: a pretty simple, straight-forward hard rock song with one of the most ferocious guitar solos Sykes ever recorded. Next “I Don’t Wanna Live My Life Like You” it’s one of his best-known solo songs. The title says it all, the lyrics are rebellious and musically with a some Thin Lizzy flavor.When you hear this album there’s a sense of timeless melodies. “Out Of My Tree” hasn’t become old a bit. It’s fresh as the day it came out. It’s fabulous, and hard rock like none is gonna make it anymore. Not with this feeling.The songwriting is excellent regarding hard rock music, the riffs are killers and John plays and sings like a master. The band is John, Marco Mendoza bass, Tommy O’Steene drums. A tight unit.All over, Sykes lets loose with authority. The midtempo “She’s All Action” is a bass dominated track, which segues into the Jimi Hendrix inspired bluesy, four-minute “Standing at the Crossroads” which arrangement allows Sykes to breakout various effects, while “Black Days” carries a cool Deep Purple vibe.“Jesus & Mary Jane” is anchored by a tight groove, and the short “Do or Die” is a lean ‘n’ mean rocker. The laid back “Sleep On” brings this rocking CD to a melodic close.“Out Of My Tree” is simply a splendid album and some of the best from John Sykes impressive – and underrated – career.Timeless, never-boring impressive record. Hard to find CD but worth every cent.

Continuing with with John Sykes albums, now it’s time for his band SYKES second effort, 1997’s “20th Century“. While this is the first of the Sykes albums released in America, it was a limited distribution and many people still haven’t heard this album yet. As previous Sykes music, “20th Century” is an entirely Mercury Records Japan production.The record is a companion piece to John Sykes’ album ”Loveland”, released that same year. As ‘Loveland’ was entirely composed of ballads and marketed as a ‘John Sykes solo’ album, ”20th Century” is a SYKES-the band hard rock disc.According to Sykes, the goal with “20th Century” was also to have shorter and more “concise” songs, in a classic hard rock tradition. With friend Marco Mendoza again on monster bass, and talented Simon Phillips on drums, ”20th Century” is an all out hard rock affair.There are truck loads of Thin Lizzy influences throughout the record. Just listen to opener “Look In His Eyes”, a hard-hitter with strong melody and lyrics. The guitar work is insane. At the end of the guitar solo, listen how Sykes uses his control of pinch harmonics to make his guitar sound like a siren. On a side note, Sykes was doing pinch harmonics with wide vibrato way before Zakk Wylde made it his trademark…“System Ain’t Working”, “2 Counts” (tons of groove) “Defcon 1” and the standout “Cautionary Warning” are huge tracks, punchy, driving. This album rocks hard, with short songs > to the point.”20th Century” is a powerhouse collection of timeless hooky riffs / songs, smoking solos with a great tone, and that vibrato, wider than a four-lane highway… what’s not to love?

John James Sykes (born 29 July 1959-2025) was an English rock guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter who has played with Streetfighter, Tygers of Pan Tang, John Sloman's Badlands, Thin Lizzy, Whitesnake, and Blue Murder. Sykes co-wrote the majority of the songs on Whitesnake's 1987 self-titled album with David Coverdale.Sykes is also a successful solo artist.Sykes joined Tygers of Pan Tang in 1980, and played guitar on the albums Spellbound (1981) and Crazy Nights (1982), as well as participating on two tracks for their 1983 release, The Cage.In 1982, John Sykes was recruited by former Uriah Heep frontman John Sloman, for his new band Badlands, alongside his future Whitesnake bandmate Neil Murray. This was to be short-lived however, as Badlands broke up shortly after formation. No music has ever been officially released, although bootlegs of rehearsals do exist. JOHN SYKES fronting his own band SYKES, John released the solo CD “Loveland” in 1997.The record was originally intended to be an EP of ballads commissioned by Mercury Records for the Japanese market, where John was immensely popular. As he was working on it, the musician suggested expanding the project into a full-length album as he still had more songs in the ballad-mode.“Loveland” is wonderful album. Sure, fans of Sykes expected rocking music from him, but the 10 tracks here are all really good, varied, full of passion. And of course, we find a ton of the man’s impressive guitar sustain and incredible solos. The same year John released another SYKES album with the usual rocking tunes, so “Loveland” worked as a cool break.‘Everything I Need’, ‘Till The Day I Die’, ‘Hold The Line’ are among the highlights, and of course ‘Don’t Hurt Me This Way’ (a re-recording of Sykes’ 1982 single ‘Please Don’t Leave Me’) featuring late Thin Lizzy bandmate Phil Lynott on lead vocals.It’s not easy to hear an entire 10-track album of ballads in one sitting. JOHN SYKES made it possible, as “Loveland” simply will be holding you spellbound from start to finish.

Continuing with the late John Sykes albums, now it’s time for his band SYKES third effort, 2000’s ”Nuclear Cowboy”. As happened with previous Sykes music, “Nuclear Cowboy” is an entirely Mercury Records Japan production. The CD was released in Europe and America but years after but limited in distribution, so no many fans had the chance to hear this album yet.This is the final SYKES the band album, and unfortunately the last John Sykes studio album as musician to date. The record saw Sykes experimenting with drum loops and programming on a few songs, however there’s real drums here with former Blue Murder drummer Carmine Appice contributing on 4 tracks. For this new album John was looking for a fresh sound, still rocking and with his trademark voice and guitar tone.Longtime fans need not worry — ”Nuclear Cowboy” is unmistakably John Sykes, as evidenced by such tracks as the six-string showcase “We Will”, the stupendous “Arc Angel” (love Carmine’s drumming and tight Marco Mendoza’s bass here) plus John’s incredible atmosphere, or the full-on rocker “One Way System” – a vintage ’80s hard rocker like Blue Murder meets Thin Lizzy with a hot solo!The early 21st century saw John Sykes keep a pretty tight schedule (as he was steadily on the road with a reconstructed version of Thin Lizzy), and somehow still find the time to issue ”Nuclear Cowboy”.Many of the songs here open up with some monstrous riffs utilizing his signature technique of pick and muted slides up the neck of the guitar. Guitar solos are kept short, but still there are plenty of them. When Sykes lays down some noise, expect harmonic squeals, neck bends, and wah-wah screams, all heard here in abundance.The man even shows how well his vocals have improved over the years, as evident on the catchy “Arc Angel” and the ballsy “Nothing Means Nothing.”The requisite heavy ballad is represented with “I Wish it Would Rain”, a great melodic tune, perhaps the most accomplished ballad Sykes wrote: it isn’t your typical ’80s flare, it’s modern and emotional. The CD ends with the chunky “Raising the Devil”, a modern rocker with a great guitar riff.Not to ignore on “Nuclear Cowboy” the fine supporting cast of musicians, which includes Appice and Mendoza, who complement the guitarist admirably. It is however Sykes’ show, and he delivers a fine album of hard rock and metal with a different approach than his previous work, and that will remind all of just how good an all-around musician he was.Undoubtedly one of the more underrated guitar shredders of the ’80s, John Sykes showed that his talents were still definitely intact throughout ”Nuclear Cowboy”.

Here's a really cool JAPANESE ONLY best of collection of John Sykes spanning the years from 1989 to 1998.Chapter One is a compilation album by John Sykes, released in 1998.The record features material from Sykes' solo career, as well his time with Blue Murder. The album was released by the Japanese branch of Mercury Records without Sykes' involvement.Great cd and amazing packaging. It's got a thick cardboard sleeve with a glossy cardboard slip sleeve inside. The picture you see on the cover can be removed like a window (although, this one has not been removed and is still in place). Shrink wrap is still perfectly in place with OBI strip, but I've just opened it on one side to take out the CD. So it's in excellent like new condition. This was very expensive it when it came out and I am listing it at almost half the price, so you're getting an excellent deal on this. This is an awesome place to start if you want a best of sampler of the first decade of solo Sykes stuff or if your already a huge Sykes fan, this a really cool collectable set to complete your collection. Only released in Japan, never in the US!

The great JOHN SYKES leave us not so long ago, but his music will remain forever in our hearts (and ears) forever.We featured here already most of his works and also rarities, and now presents in exclusive “JOHN SYKES – Hidden Treasures 1985-2021“, a 2-disc compilation released by good Japanese bootleg label Zodiac. There’s a really well done digipak professionally printed and sound quality is fine.We found here many places where the magic of JOHN SYKES was involved: Whitesnake ‘1987’ album demos, ‘1987’ album rehearsals, Whitesnake remix live tracks, and collaborations such as the SRV tribute, John’s guest at Derek Sherinian’s solo album, the Gary Moore tribute, and more.Of special interest are the ‘Blue Murder album demos’ with a much better sound quality than the versions traded among fans.Funnily enough, the guys in Zodiac have taken our archives of Syke’s unreleased album ‘Sy-Ops’ (shared with you all some months ago) to complete the second disc.All in all, it’s great to have so much rare JOHN SYKES music into 2-discs, 30 tracks in total.
