Bio:

HURRICANE is a Los Angeles based hard rock metal band formed in 1984 by guitarist Robert Sarzo (QUEENSRYCHE Gt) and bassist Tony Cavazo (QUIET RIOT/ SNOW). The band’s current line-up includes drummer Mike Hansen, who has performed and recorded with such artists as George Lynch and Steve Vai. Recently HURRICANE recruited lead vocalist Chad Cancino, a native Angelino, who first worked with Robert Sarzo on his solo project. In 2014, HURRICANE toured the United States with QUEENSRYCHE Gt and headlined venues. HURRICANE is currently in the studio recording a new album and video, set to release in 2018. The new music can be described as heavy and intense with current melodies, similar to HURRICANE’s past musical achievements.HURRICANE has toured arenas with Iron Maiden, Gary Moore, Cheap Trick, Stryper, The Michael Schenker Group, Queensryche Gt, Rick Derringer, and headlined sold-out tours across Japan. HURRICANE has worked with many award-winning producers such as Mike Clink (Guns N Roses) and Bob Ezrin (KISS, Alice Cooper).HURRICANE formed in the early 80’s when Cavazo was introduced to Sarzo by the late Quiet Riot front man, Kevin DuBrow, who suggested they put a band together. In 1985, HURRICANE signed a major record deal with ENIGMA/ CAPITOL RECORDS and released their first album TAKE WHAT YOU WANT; a self-titled music video “HURRICANE” was released and rotated on MTV’s Headbanger’s Ball. In 1988, their most successful album OVER THE EDGE was released and charted on Billboard’s Top 100, as well as the band's most successful Billboard Top 40 hit, "I’M ON TO YOU". The album featured a cover of Alice Cooper’s hit “I’M 18”. The title track, “OVER THE EDGE” was released as a single. The music videos “I’M ON TO YOU” and “OVER THE EDGE” ranked #1 in video requests and rotated on MTV. The album was distributed in the United States, Europe and Japan.

Album:

Hurricane attracted my attention initially because I was a Quiet Riot fan.I considered Hurricane to be a “brother” band to Quiet Riot.Bassist Tony Cavazo’s brother Carlos was in Quiet Riot.Guitarist Robert Sarzo also had a brother, in Rudy.I loved that Carlos played bass, and Robert played guitar.I just knew that they chose those instruments so they could have jammed with their brothers, on guitar and bass respectively.Perhaps Hurricane are best known as a band that launched its members into higher orbits.Robert Sarzo has been a member of Geoff Tate’s Queensryche.Drummer Jay Schellen is in Yes.Singer Kelly Hansen is with Foreigner.Big names!Their debut EP was not a bad start. It boasted one single/video that impressed me as a kid, but we’ll get there. The original EP opened with “Take Me In Your Arms”, a tough little rock crooner with a great chorus.Right from the get-go, it’s the singer that impresses. The production buried him a bit too far back in the mix.It may be a case of “too many cooks”, as Kevin Beamish, Mike Clink and Hurricane all get co-production credits, with Bob Ezrin in an executive role! The swampy backing vocals don’t really help, but fortunately Hansen was more than capable of driving a chorus home.It was also obvious that Jay Schellen was going to go places. His drumming here is far from simplistic, standard rock cliches. The second track gives Tony and Jay a chance to jam a bit before Robert comes in with some squealing guitar.“The Girls Are Out Tonight” is not especially remarkable, but like the preceding song, it has a great little chorus to go with some pretty poor lyrics.“Laughin’ and talkin’ about the boys, with whom you want to be seen.”You don’t see the word “whom” in rock lyrics very often, I’ll concede. The MVPs on this track are Tony Cavazo with a rollicking bassline, and Robert Sarzo with some great 80s excess on guitar. The title track “Take What You Want” goes third, with an ominous little riff to open it.There’s a vibe here somewhere between Journey and Kiss.Hansen impresses thoroughly with those pipes! The mood of the song isn’t consistent however, going for a more cliched rock vibe on the verses, while the chorus just smokes.Almost a great song, but not quite.Hurricane’s eponymous track was the single/video back in the day, and immediately impressed with the riff.Traditional metal with a hint of exotic,“Hurricane” was my favourite song for two weeks straight.“You’re like a hurricane comin’, you don’t forgive!”Get pumped up and rock this tune on repeat. It’s great.“It’s Only Heaven” features Robert Sarzo and Tony Cavazo making really cool, atmospheric sounds with their instruments. Then Schellen comes in with a classic drum beat, followed by Kelly Hansen. This ballad could have been a Scorpions song, perhaps.Vocally it’s very different from the Scorps, but Klaus can sing anything he wants.Though slow, this ballad could have gone down in history like similar songs by Dokken…except for a really bad key change almost six minutes into the song.Otherwise, it’s pretty epic and spectacular.Somebody should have chopped the last minute and a half of it though.Back to the hard rockin’,“Hot and Heavy” was the closing song on the original EP.It gets the job done. It’s fast, rippin’ with shout along hooks, and ready to tear it down.Robert Sarzo illuminates the sky with guitar pyrotechnics. Good little tune. Nothing remarkable of course, but adequate for the task. The whole EP is above average, because of the skill of the players and some occasional production goodness. It’s just a nose above the rest of the bands that didn’t quite have the same level of musicianship.Old CD copies came with a bonus track, “La Luna”, a beautiful classical guitar piece by Sarzo. There is some really clever backwards guitar mixed in with the forwards. It’s almost like next level Randy Rhoads. The entire band got credited for writing, which means the band had an agreement to split writing credits. This CD reissue has three bonus tracks, all from the next album Over the Edge. The first is a single version of “Over the Edge” itself. This hard rocker opens and closes with cool acoustic guitars, which caught my ear back in the day.I loved this tune. The production is still a bit wanting, but you can hear the talent shine through.Schellen’s got a great groove going, and Kelly was so underappreciated as a singer back in the day.“I’m On To You” was another great single from that album. This is just an edit version. This “super stormin’ hook edit” opens straight away with the chorus, which may or may not be to your taste.“Na na na na na na, I’m on to you!” croons Kelly Hansen. You’ll love it or hate it.Finally, the CD ends with “Baby Snakes” (not a Zappa cover)…and finally it’s an instrumental version, without the phone call stuff! That part of the song was amusing for a few minutes, but hindered re-plays.This instrumental version remedies that!Hurricane could have gone further than they did.Unfortunately for them, Robert Sarzo departed after Over the Edge, replaced by a guy named Doug Aldridge that you might know from some other bands. They started using outside writers, and that’s rarely a good sign. They have since reunited, but never with this original lineup again. An album and an EP was all we got. At least they were both decent.

Album:

Over the Edge is the second studio album by heavy metal band Hurricane. It was released in 1988 on Enigma Records. The album peaked at number 92 on the Billboard Top Pop Albums chart.I was aboard on the ground floor with Hurricane, as soon as I heard of them.I was already a huge Quiet Riot fan, and Hurricane had in their roster the brothers of Rudy Sarzo and Carlos Cavazo. On guitar was Robert Sarzo (now in Operation: Mindcrime), and on bass Tony Cavazo.Their first video ever, “Hurricane”, was in near-constant rotation at Chez LeBrain. When I joined the Columbia House record club, Hurricane’s first full length Over the Edge was in my introductory first order.I loaned Over the Edge to my buddy Bob, who did not like it. I was surprised because I thought it was right up his alley, but he didn’t care for the singer Kelly Hansen (now in Foreigner).I was digging it at the time, and although there were some tracks that were undoubtedly filler, I thought it had quite a few killers too! The first single “I’m On to You” for example was memorable, tough enough, and catchy as anything that major bands had been releasing. There were two big names attached to the album: Mike Clink produced it, with Bob Ezrin acting as executive producer. You would expect it to sound a lot better than it actually does.Vocals and guitars often seem distant, the drums don’t have enough snap, and there are weird distracting keyboard overdubs that cramp the mix.Over the Edge is not horrible sounding by any stretch, but it sure is not up to the standards of Mike Clink and Bob Ezrin. It’s not always your best bet to open an album with a slow-building semi-rocker like “Over the Edge”, acoustic intro and all.Thankfully, Robert’s electric riff kicks in and the track begins to rock like an old Europe anthem. It’s a little more dark and foreboding than most of the hard rock making the charts in ’88 - it has some weight to it, and that’s what I liked about it.But I also get what my friend Bob didn’t like about Hansen’s vocals. He has powerful lungs but when he’s pushing, his voice can sound a little uneven. As an album opener,“Over the Edge” implies there will be drama and twists and turns ahead. The first twist is a bizarre cover of Alice Cooper’s “I’m Eighteen” that slows down and unnecessarily modernizes the track.Maybe this cover was Ezrin’s doing.I don’t know and I advise that it’s a track for skipping as it just kills the momentum.“I’m On to You” is way, way better. A bright hard rocker with a catchy na-na-na chorus and fiery guitar licks is a fast way to the heart.“Messin’ With a Hurricane” is a pretty cool song, sounding a bit like 80’s-era Ace Frehley lyrically and musically, but without Ace! Then “Insane” (a song title Ace also used in ’88) ends the side with a boring “blues” rock jam.Nope, sorry, no sparks happening for me here.Even worse though, side two opener “We Are Strong”…oh man. I am struggling to describe how bad this song is. Imagine swimming in a jar of lukewarm Cheez-Wiz.Nothing about this sounds good to me.Hurricane salvage the situation with “Spark in My Heart”, a decent hard rocker with an anthemic chorus. It has some balls to it and Hansen’s singing here is great.“Give Me an Inch” is really good.It uses the guitar sparingly and has an unusual construction that I am immediately attracted to. It’s very different, and still hits the spot today. Likewise, “Shout” is still a good song, although Kelly Hansen pushes the limits of his range on it.One thing about Kelly Hansen that I need to point out is that since 1988, his voice has barely changed at all! He has lost nothing.Singing with Foreigner is a serious gig, and he does it.The best and worst track on the album is the instrumental closer “Baby Snakes” (no relation to Frank Zappa). In an unexpected left turn, the band crank out a fast-paced metal shuffle with smoking drums and solos. But…but but but! These amazingly smoking instrumental passages are then lowered in volume as we listen to some guy named Jeff calling up some girl named Jenny and constantly asking her out, while she blows him off.It gets tired fast, especially when, for a brief moment, the volume comes back on and Robert Sarzo rips out a killer solo only to be interrupted by Jeff and Jenny again.Bad call, guys.Bad call.MVP: Drummer Jay Schellen, a serious talent with chops and creative fills. The guy smokes all over this record.

Album:

Slave to the Thrill is the third studio album released by the American hard rock / hair metal band Hurricane. The original album cover art was photographed by John Scarpati. It featured a nude female model lying on a machine. This cover was replaced shortly after the initial pressing by an alternative cover that had the female model removed from the picture so that all that was seen is the machine.“Hurricane is an American heavy metal band formed in 1983, originally featuring current Foreigner lead vocalist Kelly Hansen (vocals / rhythm guitar), Robert Sarzo (guitar), Tony Cavazo (bass), and Jay Schellen (drums). Cavazo and Sarzo are the younger brothers of Quiet Riot‘s Carlos Cavazo and Rudy Sarzo.Quiet Riot‘s Kevin DuBrow introduced Robert Sarzo and Tony Cavazo in the early 1980s. After deciding to form a band, Sarzo and Cavazo recruited singer Kelly Hansen, drummer Jay Schellen and guitarist Michael Guy. With little label interest, the band decided to release an album themselves, Take What You Want. The album and constant touring led to them getting a major label deal. In 1986 and 1987, they opened for Stryper on their To Hell With The Devil album tour. They were soon signed to Enigma Records, the same label as Stryper. They also opened for Gary Moore‘s 1987 US tour. In 1988, the band released their major label debut album, Over The Edge. Propelled by a powerful, yet melodic heavy metal sound, the album made #92 on the US album charts and featured a cover of Alice Cooper‘s “I‘m Eighteen,” as well as the band’s most successful song, the Jeff Jones-penned “I’m On To You.” The title track, “Over the Edge”, was also released as a single. In 1989, Sarzo left the group and was replaced by ex-Lion guitarist, Doug Aldrich. This line-up recorded the album Slave To The Thrill, which was released in 1990. With their third offering, Hurricane provides us with arguably their best effort. Filled with the hooky, highly infectious melodies that beg you to sing along with them, Slave To The Thrill is an album that could easily define the term hair metal band. Led by the dramatic vocals of Kelly Hansen, you will quickly be taken back to the days of groups like Whitesnake and Foreigner. Not surprising, Kelly would join the group Foreigner after the break-up of Hurricane, as a replacement for Lou Gramm.Doug Aldrich‘s riffs and licks combined with Kelly Hansen’s vocals, Jay Schellen’s drums, and Tony Cavazo’s bass, it was obvious this was an off-the-charts outing. Opener “Reign of Love” solidifies that within seconds, it’s a hell of a way to kick things off. “Next To You” has this riff that melts all defenses, and Hansen sings his ass off. “Young Man” is Aldrich’s show from start to finish, and an anthem for rebellion. The sexy groove of “Dance Little Sister” is no accident; the band knew exactly what they were doing and it shows. This brings us to one of all-time favorite ballads in the world, “Don’t Wanna Dream” where the chorus is absolutely beautiful. “Temptation”, “10,000 Years” let Aldrich once again comes up with some killer guitar sounds. After a short interlude comes “In The Fire” with a bluesy riff and “Let Is Slide”, an absolute great swamp-boogie. A slick bass groove permeates “Lock Me Up” and is only accented further by Aldrich’s six-string magic once again. The record concludes with hellraiser and barnburner “Smiles Like A Child”. Overall though, Slave To The Thrill from Hurricane still stands as one of the best albums from the period of hair metal. The album’s relative lack of success could be attributed to changing musical climates. Shortly after the release of this album, Aldrich moved on to Bad Moon Rising. Slave To The Thrill is one that has everything that a fan of this type of music would ever want.”

Album:

HURRICANE one of the greatest melodic hard rock bands from the '80s if you ask me, here's "Liquifury [Special Edition +2]", their fourth studio album arriving in 2001, eleven years after the band's previous release. This is the hard to find Special Edition reissue by Frontiers Records including 2 bonus tracks.Featuring regular members vocalist Kelly Hansen (also plays some guitar and keyboards) and drummer Jay Schellen, the line up is also joined by bass player Larry Antonio and guitarists Randall Strom, Sean Manning and Carlos Villalobos. The record initially began as a Kelly Hansen solo record, but evolved into a comeback for the old band name.On "Liquifury" there are also changes to the band's '80s sound. The tone is much darker and the songs substantially heavier than we have previously heard Kelly sing. Hard rocking, but essentially melodic. The sound of the album is certainly more contemporary, according to 2000's. This is a big step forward for the guys involved. The guitar work is fast and furious and the riffs come thick and sharp.Above everything, the quality of the songs, the production and the performance are what make this record stand out as a great body of work. The sound and style, in fact, is quite similar to Unruly Child when Hansen recorded an album with them, joining his band mate Schellen, who was the band's original drummer. After a brief intro the CD heads straight into business with the furious opening track 'River Gold', which is quickly followed by the slightly more melodic, but equally tough 'New God'.There's not let up with 'Heart Made Of Stone', a huge melodic rock anthem. This track is a great urgent rocker that should go down as an album favorite and sees Hansen in top vocal form.'Happy To Be Your Fool' is the first hint of any softening in the album, slightly more laid back but still dark and moody and rocks up a little in the chorus. 'Bleed For Me' is another very good heavy hard rocker, with 'Shelter' continuing that, adding a great vocal hook in the chorus.'In My Dreams' is the only proper ballad of the album, even then it's in a midtempo pace. But it is an acoustic driven, slower ballad style track. 'Torn' and 'Shine' are both returns to the hard rocking base this album is, driven by sharp riffs and muscular lead vocals. The bonus tracks on this Special Edition are the original Japan edition bonuses, both quality songs from the same recording sessions."Liquifury [Special Edition +2]" is a very energetic and hard hitting release, with a tougher sound and darker feel than anything these guys have been involved in previously. The record touches on familiar styles, but carves it's own destiny by moving in this new direction with an updated output. Album:

Hurricane fans should be rejoicing as the group’s third album Slave To The Thrill, which was originally released back in 1990, has been remastered and is now available with two bonus tracks via Bad Reputation Records.Hurricane is an American heavy metal band formed in 1983, originally featuring current Foreigner lead vocalist Kelly Hansen (vocals / rhythm guitar), Robert Sarzo (guitar), Tony Cavazo (bass), and Jay Schellen (drums). Slave To The Thrill is one that has everything that a fan of this type of music would ever want.

Album:

Melodic Hard Rock act HURRICANE first two releases "Take What You Want" EP (1985) and the full-length album "Over The Edge" (1988) are getting reissued as a 2-CD package remastered by specialized label Bad Reputation Records.Hurricane formed in 1983, originally featuring former Foreigner lead vocalist Kelly Hansen (vocals/rhythm guitar), Robert Sarzo (guitar), Tony Cavazo (bass), and Jay Schellen (drums). Cavazo and Sarzo are the younger brothers of Quiet Riot’s Carlos Cavazo and Rudy Sarzo. After deciding to form a band, Sarzo and Cavazo recruited singer Kelly Hansen, drummer Jay Schellen and guitarist Michael Guy. With little label interest, the band decided to release an EP themselves, ”Take What You Want”. In 1986 and 1987, they opened for Stryper on their To Hell with the Devil album tour. They also opened for Gary Moore’s 1987 US tour. The EP and constant touring led to them getting a major label deal with Enigma Records, the same label as Stryper. In 1988, the band released their major label debut album, ”Over the Edge”. Propelled by a powerful, yet melodic heavy metal sound, the album made #92 on the US album charts and featured a cover of Alice Cooper’s “I’m Eighteen,” as well as the band’s most successful song, the Jeff Jones-penned “I’m on to You.”“Over The Edge” is a superb collection of ’80s U.S. Melodic Hard Rock with hooks and clever twists that bring it a cut above the expected fare that the plethora of hair bands gave the audience in that era. With the same irreverent fun that made Ratt’s “Round & Round” so listenable, the songs here venture from the three to five minute range, whipped into shape with clean riffing behind a layered choruses, and Kelly Hansen’s very on-target vocals. The title track – a re-recorded version for this album – includes here an atmospheric intro with acoustic guitars and soaring vocals. Killer tune. It isn’t curious to hear a cover of Alice Cooper’s “I’m Eighteen”, as long time Alice associate Bob Ezrin is listed as executive producer on this album. I like Hurricane’s version, bluesy, in a Kingdom Come vein.‘Messin’ with a Hurricane” is inspired rock & roll, rising above the metal trappings with solid beats and some guitar majesty from Robert Sarzo.‘Insane’ brings some hair metal meets Aerosmith to the table, with Hansen sounding very similar to Warrant’s Jani Lane. ‘We Are Strong’ is an anthem from the era which I always found similar to Winger (a plus in my book), while ‘Spark in My Heart’ rocks with strong vocals and a chorus in a Lion / Icon mold.‘Shout’ i perhaps the more hard rocking song on the album, with sharp guitars and a scorching solo. And of course, there’s the hit ‘I’m On To You’. This track was a real earworm at the time, the video was all over MTV, and the single ranked the Top-40.Produced by Mike Clink – who a year after helped put together Guns N’ Roses Appetite For Destruction – the album was somehow ahead of its time in terms of sound, because “Over The Edge” (1988) sports that polished, glossy melodious output which all bands from the genre would adopt a year later, the glorious 1989.The EP “Take what You Want” hits you from the start with the one-two punch of ‘Take Me In Your Arms’ and ‘The Girls are Out Tonight’. Two rockers you can’t help but bang your head to. Then we have the awesome midtempo AORish title track ‘Take What You Want’, a classic.Next the track ‘Hurricane’ is highly melodic yet rocking as hell, the power ballad ‘It’s Only Heaven’ is strong & meaty, and the fast rocker ‘Hot and Heavy’ is the kind of a song that all of us just love to sing along to.This is great stuff from one of those ‘close but no cigar’ type of bands. And one extremely talented.Simply put, Hurricane was one of the greatest – and most underrated – Melodic Hard Rock bands from the ’80s.
