TEXAS HIPPIE COALITION drummer Timmy Braun went through a physical struggle while recording the album, having just recovered from a serious infection shortly beforehand. He feels, perhaps, that this struggle influenced his recording style overall."About 'Dark Side Of Black', I have never had such a difficult time completing an album in my life," begins Braun. "I say that because my first session I had just got out of the hospital. It was difficult for me to walk let alone play a drum kit. After being in bed for literally two weeks, I felt a bit out of shape. Then for the second session, my hand was swollen to almost twice its size because of an injury! I couldn't make a fist, let alone play a drum kit. However, I'm hoping the vibe I was able to create will have a special flavor that I wouldn't have been able to offer had my life been in order, per se. In other words, tough times make for better art!"Guitarist Cord Pool adds: "Between tweaking our writing style and being influenced by personal things, 'Dark Side Of Black' leads the listener a step closer to the darker and heavier side of what we have to offer."

Texas Hippie Coalition is famous for their gritty, foot stomping tunes about drinking and partying—their self-described "Red Dirt Metal." The rockers from Denison, Texas are back again and not slowing down for anything. High in the Saddle is the band’s sixth studio album and their first in three years, following up 2016’s Dark Side of Black. While Dark Side of Black was very much about heavy instrumentation, High in the Saddle introduces more melody and has a lighter vibe overall.Producer Bob Marlette took the helm once again, having worked on Texas Hippie Coalition’s 2014 album, Ride On. Having worked with everyone from Rob Zombie to Lynyrd Skynyrd, it’s no surprise that High in the Saddle is well crafted. It is also cleverly arranged as if each song is a distinct puzzle piece that fits into the other. Big guitars and groovy rhythms explode with southern charm and party rock vibes. Needless to say, there is no shortage of fun times here. As vocalist Big Dad Rich says, “I’m just out of have fun, man.” Indeed, that’s the stuff that Red Dirt Metal is made of.The album kicks off with the swaggering gem “Moonshine.” It’s devilishly catchy hooks and rolling cadence will get lister’s heads nodding right away. It goes down as nicely as a cool swig of beer. Big Dad Rich’s deep, husky voice booms with authority and just a hint of sweetness. Second thought, a shot of honey bourbon seems more fitting. “Bring It Baby” switches gears a little, sliding into more of a hard rock tune. Rich’s voice stands out clearly over crunchy guitar riffs as they mingle over thrashing symbols. There is also some excellent solo work here, which adds a bit of grittiness overall.High in the Saddle would be remiss without a nod to two major influences. Both Johnny Cash and Stevie Nicks played a big part in developing the band’s sound, and to Rich personally. The song titled “Stevie Nicks” is uber-catchy and very much something to dance to. It describes a beautiful, spell-binding woman who wants to dance and have fun. Not unlike the original gypsy queen. As the lyrics state, “look at you girl, dancing like a gypsy.”The ode to “The Man In Black” is much less up front. However, you can still hear that Cash-esque presence in “Ride or Die”. Here, the record begins to spread its wings, bringing in those melodic elements. It's a mixed drink of charming acoustic guitars and some unexpected piano work. It could even be faintly reminiscent of Black Label Society’s more ballad-like songs.As for the feel-good party antics, that can easily be attributed to bands like Motley Crue. “BullsEye” boast every bit of that classic 80’s rock ballad it can. There are some great guitar riffs here. It resonates with the same soulfulness as Bon Jovi’s “Dead or Alive”.All put together, High in the Saddle is a nice piece of musical craftsmanship. While most of the subject matter is the same, musically there is something for everyone. The record will seem to end just as quickly as it began. If there is any disenchantment then Red Dirt Metal is probably not the right genre for that listener. If you can’t take the party, stay away from the south!

The album coda is also the title track, and ends the album in gloriously Red Dirt/Southern Rock style, it’s mean, moody, and utterly magnificent.Overall, ”The Name Lives On” is an exceptional album from start to finish. Gunsmoke is the eighth studio album by American heavy metal music ensemble Texas Hippie Coalition. Released on 04 October 2024, the work was published by MNRK Music Group.With drinks poured, fists raised, and smiles wide, TEXAS HIPPIE COALITION a.k.a. THC always know how to have a good time. A collective of tried-and-true rabble rousers and dyed-in-the-wool storytellers, the Texas quintet - Big Dad Ritch (vocals), Cord Pool (guitar), Nevada Romo (guitar), Rado Romo (bass), and Joey Mandigo (drums) - spike ass-whopping hard rock with a kick of country swagger and a whole lot of Texas grit and gusto.Gathering tens of millions of streams, logging thousands of miles on the road, and energizing countless fans, they deliver ten anthems tailormade to simmer and scorch on their eighth full-length album, Gunsmoke. Its writing process had first started with the band staying at an Airbnb for a month before going on to record in Dallas and at Bell Labs in Northern Oklahoma with producer Trent Bell. The end result was the band's most authentic-sounding album bringing them back to their early years as the purveyors of their own signature style proudly dubbed "red dirt metal". As Ritch explains: "Trent allowed me to get as much of myself into the album as possible. It's similar to our first two records when I was really the captain at the helm. Those records were less polished. So, we got back to the rawness that was there at the beginning." This time around, the musicians wholeheartedly embraced their country and Southern rock stylings as well as a lifelong passion for westerns. "I've always been a western guy," Ritch affirms. "John Wayne is one of my superheroes. You try to model yourself after people you think have good morals and standards. As a big guy, if I walk in and look like a man who has his act together, it's like, 'Here comes this big man'," he laughs. "Gunsmoke is me projecting myself at you like, 'This is what I stand for. This is how I live'."That message comes through loud and clear on the title track and first single "Gunsmoke". Rustic acoustic guitar crawls through a stomping beat punctuated by waves of groaning distortion. It climaxes on a chantable chorus, "I sell weed and liquor to the city slickers. I can get you there quicker, and like a gun...I smoke." And the bulk of the other songs throughout Gunsmoke also demonstrate how well-booted THC have strived to keep consistently throughout their nearly 20-year career. The wild riffing tosses and turns of "Bones Jones" - a story about "a local entrepreneur" according to Ritch - is also a strong heavy groove-ridden number chock full of riffs and colorful narration lived and sung by the man who knew the real-life character. "In our hometown, there was a guy named 'Bones'," Ritch recalls. "He was about six-foot-seven-inches tall like Lurch from The Addams Family. I'd get weed from him, but he sold everything you could think of. Just weed for me though," he chuckles. Even openers "Deadman" and "Baptized In The Mud" are the perfect autobiographical anthems that sum up the essence of THC, further highlighting their red dirt metal beginnings. "It represents the wild west Texas-Oklahoma area," Ritch further elaborates, "You've got a little red dirt country spilling over into the storytelling and metal. It's a return to the dirt where we came from." And showing the band's tender side would be the heartfelt "She's Like A Song". Uplifted to the heavens by bright guitars and a solid beat, an epic chorus takes flight as Ritch sings, "She's like a song to me, a lovely harmony, a sweet melody", his normally raging voice putting its emotions boldly on display. The ride concludes with the breezy exhale of the BLACK LABEL SOCIETY-sounding vibe of "I'm Gettin' High". Loose acoustic guitar brushes up against his soulful delivery, pairing countrified poetry with a smoked-out guitar solo. The frontman continues, "Even though I'm down on my luck and the repo man just drove off with my truck, I'm still getting high. That's how life is. No matter what, you can still do whatever makes you feel good—go fishing, hunting, or shopping. It's the country side of THC."And whatever type of burning sensations that Gunsmoke may trigger to both the diehard fan or the first-time listener, it's an album that'll stay well preserved in one's system for as long as TEXAS HIPPIE COALITION keep staying high on life.

Just Like Johnny Cash features the crunchy, heavily distorted palm-muted rhythm guitar of Corban Vincent and the soaring lead guitars of Nevada Romo as Ritch growls “I wasn’t meant to wear white, I was meant to wear black, just like Johnny Cash.” In Lone Star State Line, the instrumentation is just as bruising as Ritch declares proudly, “I’m Texas born y’all, and American made. It’s the sonic equivalent of attempting to hang on while riding a mechanical—or even a real bull. Pure headbanging red dirt metal, all the way.Stoned Cowboys brings a interesting twist to THC’s signature sound. It’s still raw and heavy, but the instrumentation is fleshed out with some classic country trademarks: Soaring, mournful pedal steel guitar on Writing Songs in the Rain and High in the Saddle. Damned Ol’ Country Song features a fiddle solo, and Put the Gun Down has an acoustic guitar intro.The most interesting song, lyric-wise is No Relation. Ritch sings that he’s not related to Johnny Cash, Hank Williams Jr, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Ray Wylie Hubbard and David Allen Coe, but just the same, “I’m an outlaw like those outlaw men.” The two albums have really great crossover potential: Headbangers and outlaw country folks might discover that they actually have a lot in common.

Damned Ol’ Country Song features a fiddle solo, and Put the Gun Down has an acoustic guitar intro.The most interesting song, lyric-wise is No Relation. Ritch sings that he’s not related to Johnny Cash, Hank Williams Jr, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Ray Wylie Hubbard and David Allen Coe, but just the same, “I’m an outlaw like those outlaw men.” The two albums have really great crossover potential: Headbangers and outlaw country folks might discover that they actually have a lot in common.
