Starbenders are an American rock band from the suburbs of Atlanta, Georgia. The group was formed in 2013 when lead singer and guitarist Kimi Shelter contacted her former bandmate Aaron Lecesne about doing a new project.After adding guitarist Kriss Tokaji and drummer Emily Moon, Starbenders were subsequently signed to former Lady Gaga music director/guitarist Nico Constantine’s label, Institution Records.With Constantine serving as their producer, the band has released three EPs, one full-length, one 7-inch, and six singles on Institution Records and two singles and one full-length on Sumerian Records.In May of 2019, it was announced that Starbenders had signed to Sumerian Records, and the band's first single and video on the label, "London," was released to positive reception.The band then embarked on a US tour with labelmates Palaye Royale.Starbenders continued to tour through 2019, supporting Jamie Bower's band Counterfeit on a North American tour and releasing the single "Holy Mother" in September.Starbenders began 2020 with a US tour with Asking Alexandria frontman Danny Worsnop.On February 14th, they released their debut full-length on Sumerian Records, Love Potions, produced by longtime producer Nico Constantine.Reflecting on the thirteen months it took the band to record the album, Kimi Shelter revealed, "We really just put our all into it. We wanted to come in old-school with it, and make sure that we were really honouring the ghosts of rock'n'roll past. It was frustrating, but the process really made us. It was both parts: beauty and pain."

It’s fair to say that STARBENDERS have been making a noise that is gradually getting everyone’s attention. From joining an impressive roster of bands after signing with Sumerian Records last year, to a 28-date tour of America completed in a single month. Clearly, they mean business.Whether they are wearing fashionable retro clothes in their photoshoots, talking the talk in interviews about good time Rock ‘N’ Roll, or the ability to capture an audience in a live setting, Starbenders’ new album “Love Potions” are deserving your attention.Not that you need much persuasion to fall for the glam rock foursome, as the briefest of listens will surely have you hooked and wanting more.The first thing I noticed with Starbenders is that you can’t really pin them down. Their sound is an eclectic mix of Glam Rock and 80’s pop that’s been modernized.There’s 14 (yes, 14) tracks, however all are around the 3-minute mark, varied, the more the album is played, the better the songs sink into your consciousness. And there’s more , STARBENDERS recently recorded some acoustic versions, added here as bonus.Album opener ‘Hangin’ On Tonight’ is a straight off, in your face, statement of intent. Kimi Shelter’s distinctive vocal style/sound is a breathe of fresh air in a time when most female vocalists all sound – or try to sound – like Lzzy Hale (Halestorm).‘Getting Harder’ has an eclectic mix of rawness with an 80’s AOR chorus and, surprisingly it works really well. That chorus is infectious in a good way and should be a contender for a single release.‘Precious’ features Remington Leith (singer of Palaye Royale) a band Starbenders previously toured with. The longest song on the album with a curious “Please Don’t Hate Me” on the fade out and, for me, the standout track giving guitarist Chris Tokaji a chance to approach the spotlight with a crunching sound.‘Holy Mother’ continues the flow of the album being 3 minutes of what Starbenders do best. Things slow down for the beginning of ‘Bitches Be Witches’ before the chorus kicks in and sticks around in your head for a long time.Then ‘London’ is a love song with a lyrical twist. “What better way to go than to have you eat me whole” is a line few other bands would dare to include. ‘Push’ is Kimi singing at her most sultry showing how versatile her amazing voice is and also proving the band are willing to explore different sounds within the album.‘Never Gonna Die’, ‘Cover Me’, ‘Can’t Cheat Time’ are songs carrying on the theme of the album and showing how good the musicianship of the band is. On a couple of these I hear some vintage Heart / Ann Wilson.Album closer ‘One Of Us’ is perfect to finish with, leaving the listener wanting more. A slightly melancholy feel to the song but not out of place in any way.”Love Potions” took us completely by surprise. The album is superb from beginning to end with no fillers at all, benefited from months of studio spit and polish. It has something for everyone, to melodic classic rock and retro-glam, to power pop & radio-rock, all wrapped by a modern sound.From the beautiful and ranging voice of Kimi and the musicality of the guitars, drums and bass, this album is proof the future of Rock ‘N’ Roll is in safe hands with the next generation.

If you were to dream up the ultimate spandex wearing Glam Metal band in your mind, then that band would be STARBENDERS. Listening to their upcoming album ‘Take Back the Night‘ is like taking a journey back to the days when rock stars looked like rock stars and behaved like rock stars. It makes such a refreshing change to see and hear something so retro yet so cool and unashamedly Rock’n’Roll in these otherwise sterile times we currently live where everyone is simply afraid to do or say anything out of a fear of offending someone.”Take Back the Night” is a superbly crafted album with a whole bevvy of different themes running through it from start to finish whilst also managing to remain completely faithful to its rock’n’roll roots. Sit back and prepare to be entertained by Starbenders.Opening gambit, ‘The Game’ is pure, unadulterated hard rock gold. Kimi Shelters raspy vocals are to die for, and the hooks are huge. Then ‘Sex’, a rocking electro-gothic metal tune sounds bang up to date with an intoxicating riff and catchy sing-along chorus. By this point, your pulse should already be raised and your heart pounding.‘Body Talk’ keeps your heart rate high, and kicks off like any true rock song should, with a good old-fashioned lead guitar, drawing you in to a heavy psych effect and fun inducing track with such irresistible backing vocals that I guarantee are futile to resist joining in with.A heavy bass riff slows things down with ‘We’re Not OK’, a tune with a very dark undertone. This is the blacker side of Starbenders, which, complete with some excellent effect pedal guitar work, works superbly to bring down the mood. It’s heavy in instrumentation and tone, growing with a slow build as vocalist Kimi Shelter describes their struggle with mental illness, especially from a young age. It’s raw and fantastically written and performed, and the gothic sounds amplify the lyrics sung and showcase the talent of the band and how they weave it through their incredible instrumentation.Lifting things up once again, ‘Cherry Wine’ is a beautiful and lighter acoustic track which really highlights Kimi unique vocal style. Stunning in its simplicity and delivery. Haunting in its delivery, ‘Seven White Horses’ is a very dreamy track with echoes of Fleetwood Mac coursing through its veins. Well executed and thoroughly enjoyable.‘The End is Near’ picks up the pace a notch or two with a psychedelic inspired undercurrent and very tight band performance gifting you something that takes you back to our glorious rock heritage. Keeping those past echoes very much alive ‘Blood Moon’ is another hard-hitting song from an album that just keeps giving. If this track was a stick of seaside rock, it would have 70s written all the way through it.If you like ’80s dark rock, then you will adore ‘If You Need It’, because it perfectly captures the sound of that time period and improves on it with something truly spectacular. ‘Marianne’ is a good old-fashioned rock song complete with bells and whistles (or in this case a very neat keyboard backdrop) that exudes style and class; Starbenders are without doubt one of the best bands around doing this type of rock.Covering the Alice Cooper classic ‘Poison’ is no mean feat, and Starbenders do it so well, that their version is right up there with the original. The pulsating riff of ‘Midnight’ will pass right through your body, subjecting you to an irresistible urge to move to the groove and maybe even attempt something a bit more vigorous.‘Say You Will’ brings things to a close nicely with a slower pace and emotional edge to round the album off neatly, leaving you baying for more, with the whole band putting their heart and soul into making it a super sensual finale.Overall, ”Take Back The Night” combines the band’s established glam rock sound with a new darker take that elevates them to a level that explores many dark themes and topics in a relatable and heartfelt manner that only STARBENDERS could deliver on.Each topic is handled with care whilst also delivered in a captivating way that shows a raw side of the band that any listener could resonate with, connecting them to each of the members who each put a piece of their past into the music. It’s human, and an album that shares these themes and topics earnestly, guided by gorgeously written music that people will return to again and again.”Take Back the Night” is a wonderful rocking album that just gets better and better each time you hear it. STARBENDERS have breathed new life and vitality back into the Glam Metal genre, and long may it last.
