Finally Rock Candy specialists have done their own remastered version of EUROPE‘s classic “The Final Countdown”. It includes 6 bonus tracks: the already appeared in previous remasters live versions of title track, ‘Danger On The Track (Live)’ and ‘Carrie (Live)’, plus the single B-sides ‘Seven Doors Hotel (1986 Version)’ & ‘On Broken Wings’, and what makes this reissue unique is the addition of the rare Remix of ‘Rock The Night’ – also a B-side but previously unavailable on CD.You don’t need a review of “The Final Countdown”, a world-wide smash hit album and a classic.This Rock Candy remaster is powerful, more punchy than the previously available. In my opinion, tracks like ‘Cherokee’ or ‘On The Loose’ are benefited by this remaster, with a more ‘edgy’ guitar attack.I doubt there’s a master tape of ‘Rock The Night (Remix)’, but the sound quality obtained for this reissue is darn good. A rarity and a cool one, a pretty different version.To sum up, this must have hit album in a big sounding remaster.Be aware there’s a fake version of this Rock Candy release floating around…Special Deluxe Collector’s Edition. Fully Remastered Audio, 6 Bonus tracks, 16 page full colour booklet, 3,500 word essay, new interview and enhanced artwork.”The Final Countdown is the third studio album by the Swedish rock band Europe. Released on 26 May 1986 through Epic Records, the album was a huge commercial success selling over 15 million copies worldwide, peaking at number 8 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart and reaching high positions in charts worldwide. It was recorded at Powerplay Studios in Zürich, Soundtrade Studios in Stockholm, Mastersound Studios in Atlanta and Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. The Final Countdown is the first album to feature keyboardist Mic Michaeli and drummer Ian Haugland and the last to feature guitarist John Norum until 2004's Start from the Dark.Five singles were released from the album: "The Final Countdown", "Love Chaser", "Rock the Night", "Carrie", and "Cherokee." The first single was responsible for launching Europe into mainstream popularity.

One of the greatest Melodic Hard Rock / AOR albums from the second half of the '80s is without a doubt "Out Of This World", EUROPE’s classic follow up to their monster hit ‘The Final Countdown’. Now Rock Candy Records has just remastered / reissued this essential record officially for the first time outside Japan.There is no question that in 1986, Europe, almost out of nowhere, became undoubtedly the biggest hard rock band on the planet. Their all-conquering hit single ‘The Final Countdown’ shot the band not only to the top of the charts worldwide but also earned them a place in the hard rock pantheon as one of the few groups who managed to appeal to not only fans of the genre but also to the wider public.It was with this tremendous uplift and, by consequence, pressure, that the band set about recording their follow-up album, a record that cemented not only their position but also their reputation.But, it wasn’t a straightforward process, as immediately after the release of their breakthrough album lead guitarist John Norum quit the band, forcing them to recruit a replacement. The man chosen was fellow Swedish musician Kee Marcello, a hugely talented player who joined the band on their ‘Final Countdown’ world tour and took a leading role in crafting this follow-up album, ‘Out Of This World’.It was a musical match made in heaven, helping the band to further focus their sound, injecting lashing of copious hard rock energy. Indeed, it sounded like the band had moved heaven and earth to secure their definitive stylistic foothold.You need strong skills to create a new album to follow the blast success of The Final Countdown, but Joey Tempest & Co did wonders with "Out Of This World".All Europe albums have a distinctive sound, and "Out Of This World" is without a doubt their more 'American' styled melodic hard rock record, and their more AOR according to times.Grand part of the huge, lush sound of this record should be credited to - in my humble opinion - the greatest producer of the decade: Ron Nevison, who also engineered & mix the recording."Out Of This World" is an '80s AOR fan heaven: you have 7 awesome mid-tempo tunes in this vein, 2 polished melodic hard rockers and 3 superb emotional ballads.Again, in my humble opinion, all killers / no fillers.From the first single and opener 'Superstitious', you are on a treat for a glorious record. This cut remains one of Joey Tempest’s greatest compositions. It has it all: a soulful vibe, trademark Europe synths, an absolutely blazing guitar solo by Kee Marcello, and plenty of organ to go with its mellow classic feel.The rest is terrific as well; 'Let The Good Times Rock', the arena-ready 'Open Your Heart', the rocking 'More Than Meets The Eye', the smoking 'Ready or Not', the sophisticated 'Sign of the Times', etc. All wonderful.Of course there's top class numbers in the somehow melancholic 'Coast To Coast' and - excuse me if you don't agree - the greatest Europe ballad ever: 'Tomorrow', a very special song to me (and for many people around the world), so emotional, so perfect...The songwriting shines through "Out Of This World", as does the talent of the players and the immaculate production, elevating the band to previously un-scaled heights, never once taking their eye off prize.This Rock Candy remaster by Jon Astley is great, more warm than the Japanese, with an updated punch yet balanced on all frequencies.

This CD originated during the period right before Europe’s triumphant reunion album Start From the Dark, so Best Ballads only contains music from the first five Europe discs.Because it’s unauthorized and the Russians can do whatever they want, why not have both versions of “Open Your Heart” on one CD? The sweeping 1988 version from Out of this World inaugurates the album, a brilliant version often forgotten in favour of the 1984 original. What’s the difference? John Norum played on the 1984 version from Wings of Tomorrow, and the re-recording has his replacement Kee Marcello. The 1988 version also has more modern keyboards added. Since both are included, you don’t have to pick a favourite. We can all agree it truly is one of Europe’s Best Ballads.What else is present? The “big one” of course, which would be “Carrie”. It’s the only track from The Final Countdown, because it was the only hit ballad from that album. Other crucial Europe ballads: “Dreamer” (Wings of Tomorrow), “Coast to Coast” and “Tomorrow” (both from Out of this World). All timeless and flawless ballads. From their first album (1983’s Europe) are a couple songs I wouldn’t have considered ballads. In my review, I stated that “Words of Wisdom” has “an acoustic verse [but] that doesn’t make it a ballad!” The other track, “Return of the King”, is “still pretty epic and wouldn’t be considered wimpy by anyone”. Do they belong on a CD called Best Ballads? Who gives a fuck.You’ll even find a couple rarities included. “Sweet Love Child” and “I’ll Cry For You (Acoustic version)” are both B-sides from the Prisoners in Paradise (1991) period. The title track “Prisoners in Paradise” is also present but again, not really a ballad. Either way…all the Europe tunes included are fantastic no matter how you classify them. Each one has at least a foot in ballad territory so it all works out.But what about those Joey Tempest “bonus tracks”? Surprisingly good and un-Europe. “Under the Influence” flies close to adult contemporary levels.“Lord of the Manner” could have been a hit for Rod Stewart, but that’s not a bad thing! This is more like soft rock than balladeering. “Elsewhere” sounds more like a ballad, enhanced with strings and all the accoutrements.All good songs and worth checking out.Europe’s Best Ballads is not a bad little CD, but being an unofficial release, it’s difficult to reason out a rating out of 5. I did the best I could.

On 7th June 2013, EUROPE took the stage in their home country Sweden for a very special occasion: celebrating 30 years of Rock music. Joey Tempest & Co. celebrated this event together with 30,000 people at the famous Sweden Rock Festival, all have been taped and now it's being released on various formats as "Live At Sweden Rock : 30th Anniversary Show".Europe performed a total 28 songs, of course including numbers from their most recent albums like Last Look At Eden and Bag Of Bones.But what makes this live album so special and different from a 'greatest hits live' it's the fact Europe selected their personal favourite moments from their earlier years, some of them performed live for the very first time in 25 years.We have from the very first album "In The Future To Come", "Seven Doors Hotel" and "Paradize Bay", from the second, "Scream Of Anger" & Wings Of Tomorrow", and more.Of course there's also the well known, awesome rockers that enhances the partying such as "Superstitious", where John Norum shines with his lead guitar playing matching the efforts of the studio version recorded by Kee Marcello, "Rock The Night", "Let The Good Times Rock", all time classic "The Final Countdown", the emotive "Prisoners In Paradise" and the unforgettable power ballad, possibly the bands’ finest ever, "Carrie".The most recent songs rocks too; "Always The Pretenders", the atmospherically enhanced rocker "No Stone Unturned" and the bluesy manifold of "Firebox". "New Love In Town" and "Start From The Dark" are quite hot as well, but as the record shows, Europe concentrated their efforts on their early days, and I am grateful for that. In the middle of the concert, "Drink And A Smile" and "Open Your Heart" nicely balance the album as are performed in a stripped, acoustic way.Finally, there are the pair of covers. I was somewhat stunned that in this kind of anniversary such an icon would perform covers songs. On the other hand, it shows humbleness and a fine tribute to one’s influences.Paying a tribute to UFO, with "Lights Out", Europe featured Michael Schenker that demonstrated his guitaring mastery, taking on the entire lead guitar flares. The song appeared so natural for Europe to perform.Second, there was the old Thin Lizzy out-of-jail hymn "Jailbreak", performed with no other than Lizzy’s Scott Gorham exchanging solos with John Norum, another excellent pick that spiced up the originals."Live At Sweden Rock : 30th Anniversary Show" is not just another 'live record'. It's a special treat spanning the entire career of this terrific band, and they sound joyful, bombastic and hot.Surely that Joey Tempest isn’t the same young vocalist that serviced these magical tunes back in the day, yet his mid-high register still deliver the goods, and as a whole, Europe let the good times roll and Tempest in particular shared their memorandum with a staggering ability and a lot of heart.

Having enjoyed an explosive period of worldwide success in the '80s (under-pinned by their hit album and single "The Final Countdown"), 2015's "War Of Kings" has seen them take full advantage of the global groundwork EUROPE have keenly re-established over the last few years.Recently, it was decided that EUROPE's momentous live appearance at Wacken Open Air festival should not only be filmed and recorded, but released as a DVD and Blu-ray. EUROPE's "War Of Kings Special Edition" will include the original "War Of Kings" CD plus the Wacken 2015 DVD and Blu-ray, and will hit stores in North America on December 4 via Hell & Back Recordings/UDR Music. We are very pleased to announce the release of our new studio album, “Walk The Earth”, on October 20, 2017 via our own Hell & Back label through Silver Lining Music. The album cover features original artwork by famed Los Angeles artist Mike Sportes of Filth Mart. Joey Tempest: “We were in the studio a few days into recording and Dave (Cobb, producer) comes in wearing this very cool T-Shirt with one of Mike's designs on it. Immediately we knew we had to check Mike's other work and have him come up with an exclusive design for us based on the vibe of the album. We are very proud to have his amazing artwork as the 'Walk The Earth' album cover!".The album was recorded at famed Abbey Road Studios in London with Grammy winning producer Dave Cobb (Rival Sons, Shooter Jennings, Jason Isbell, Chris Stapleton) who as most of you know, also produced "War Of Kings". The very popular "Original Album Classics" series has once again updated its catalogue and taken on the first five discs.For collectors who pay homage to vinyl and would love to have all the old records, also in digital CD version, on the shelf, this can help again. I admit that I always eagerly await these handy five-disc packs to add to my own collection and protect my good old vinyl from wear and tear. In addition, the very humane price of around ten euros is incredibly easy on the wallet.Back then, still as a quartet around mastermind Joey Tempest, their first two releases in our climes unfortunately remained without noteworthy attention, which I find a pity on the first run-through, because without a doubt the band created tasteful, straight rock music already with the first notes. With a primal scream, at the beginning of the first song, Tempest moves into the limelight and remains the dazzling personality in the band to this day. Throughout, the eponymous debut album offers beautiful powerful music, with all songs worth listening to.The second record, "Wings Of Tomorrow", which was released already one year later, seamlessly follows its predecessor at the beginning. One could think that pieces were processed that had no longer found a place on "Europe". The same sounds, the same tempos and similar chords strongly suggest this. Only from the middle of the disc, with "Treated Bad Again" (which is extremely heavy fare) as well as the grandiose instrumental piece "Aphasia", also from the dark corner, do Europe strike out on new paths to new shores. From this moment on, the musical quality rises to unimagined heights. The album is rounded off by a ballad to melt you away and an ultra-fast heavy metal track. Presumably, the eyes and ears of some radio stations outside Sweden have finally been opened, because the third CD made the longed-for breakthrough for the band.With a new line-up and now five members, including a keyboard player, "The Final Countdown" catapulted into the charts. Tempest had decided to take the commercial route, produce popular hits and rake in the cash. There will hardly be anyone who doesn't have this catchy tune in their ears. For those who liked it a bit quieter, "Carrie" was the better choice. This over-ballad not only pushed up sales figures, but also ensured a rising birth rate worldwide. The 86 album is still the highlight in the band's history and was a must-have on the home record shelf at the time. From then on, the band had their stamp, which can still be seen on their forehead to this day."Out Of This World" should of course tie in with the final countdown, but it completely lacks the songs you like to hear on the radio. The twelve tracks constantly change between ballad and heavy rock. The prime example and for me the best track is "Lights And Shadows", which shows most clearly that Europe had thought about driving more on the more demanding track than just producing the same-sounding radio music. Unfortunately, they don't score any more points in the charts with it and thus play themselves among the bands that one likes to listen to, but were not outstanding at the time, although they clearly deserved more attention.The last CD of this "Original Album Classics" collection is "Prisoners In Paradise". The band gets bolder and starts to experiment. Interesting intros and varied songs make for sharpened ears. The CD is fast and heavy throughout and for the most part completely opposite to all its predecessors. The typical Europe sound hardly comes into play, instead synthesizers and low-pitched guitars are in the foreground. In addition, drummer Ian Haugland now hammers the basses with a double pedal. The highlight of this disc is the conclusion with 'Girl from Lebanon'.If you listen to this package in order, you can follow very well how the band's music has changed and, in my opinion, improved considerably. I haven't bought an album by Europe since then, but now I'm curious and will listen to the current release soon. Maybe the band is still where I liked them best with "Prisoners In Paradise"

Since its formation, Europe has released nine studio albums, three live albums, three compilations and nineteen videos.Europe rose to international fame in the 1980s with its third album The Final Countdown (1986), which became a substantial commercial success and sold over three million copies in the United States.The band was a pioneering force in the glam metal/blues metal genres and their third album,The Final Countdown, is considered a masterpiece of the genres. Europe was one of the most successful rock acts of the 1980s and sold over 20 million albums worldwide.The band has achieved two top 20 albums on the Billboard 200 chart (The Final Countdown and Out of This World) and two top 10 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 chart ("The Final Countdown" and "Carrie").Europe went on hiatus in 1992, reunited temporarily for a one-off performance in Stockholm on New Year's Eve 1999 and announced an official reunion in 2003. Since then the band has released four albums, Start from the Dark (2004), Secret Society (2006), Last Look at Eden (2009) and Bag of Bones (2012). Europe will release its tenth album, War of Kings, in 2015.The band is mainly influenced by Whitesnake, Deep Purple, Rainbow, Led Zeppelin, Thin Lizzy, UFO and Michael Schenker Group.

Swedish rockers Europe‘s fifth studio album Prisoners In Paradise has been reissued via Rock Candy Records.Prisoners in Paradise is the fifth studio album by the Swedish rock band Europe.It was released on 23 September 1991 by Epic Records and spawned hits such as the title track, "Prisoners in Paradise" and "I'll Cry for You".The album did not chart in the US, which is unusual for a major label follow-up to two recent (multi)platinum albums.Prisoners in Paradise is the last album to feature guitarist Kee Marcello.The band's guitarist Kee Marcello states in his 2011 biography that Bob Rock was the first choice for producer for this album, and agreed initially but pulled out to work on Metallica's eponymous album instead. The large number of finished bonus tracks is also explained in this book: the first version of this album, called "Seventh Sign" was rejected by the label in 1990 and the band had to write and record new songs.Five more tracks were demoed in addition to the 25 listed below; two of them were rewritten and became "New Love in Town" on Last Look at Eden and "Bring it All Home" on Bag of Bones. Most of the unreleased songs down below can be found on YouTube as demo recordings. Two of the previously unreleased tracks, "Wild Child" and "Don't Know How to Love No More" were re-recorded for Kee Marcello's 2016 solo album "Scaling Up" on Frontiers Records.
