Bio:

2013: The Swiss Hardrock legend CRYSTAL BALL is back and stronger than ever! After a creative break the original members Scott Leach and Marcel Sardella reformed CRYSTAL BALL with fresh blood and a great new frontman, Steven Mageney from Wuppertal, Germany. Steven is a experienced singer with a powerful voice and the perfect match for the new CRYSTAL BALL Sound. «Dawnbreaker» is the title of the new album, that will bring CRYSTAL BALL back to the top of the Hard Rock map.Imagine: the band started in 1995 as a cover band (named «Cherry Pie»). These years of stage experiences became the foundation of CRYSTAL BALL, under whose banner the band became one of Europe´s major forces in the Hard Rock genre. Tentatively entitled «In The Beginning» CRYSTAL BALL started their crusade in 1999. The first album was very successful, but topped with ease from the follow-up «Hard Impact», hailed album of the months in several magazines. Immediately tour plans came up, realised by supporting Pretty Maids and Gotthard. Nobody was able to hide from CRYSTAL BALL. The result: a new record contract with Nuclear Blast. With «Virtual Empire» CRYSTAL BALL showed up more varied but still traditional and melodic in 2002. The band massively toured Europe, together first with Dokken, then with U.D.O., Doro and Krokus. The special humour of CRYSTAL BALL shone through in 2003 with «HELLvetia», the fourth album. «HELLvetia», produced by former Accept/U.D.O. member Stefan Kaufmann, who CRYSTAL BALL met on their tour with U.D.O., became a more edgy effort and increased the success of CRYSTAL BALL enormously. It was the band´s return from the slightly experimental «Virtual Empire» to the old style. Successful tours with Axxis, Pink Cream 69 and Krokus saw CRYSTAL BALL increase their fan following again.«Timewalker» continued in the tradition of delivering great catchy songs full of freshness and power. Once again produced by Kaufmann the album displayed the exceptional class of CRYSTAL BALL. The bands first headliner tour with then labelmates «Thunderstone» followed the release in 2005.2007 CRYSTAL BALL inked a new record deal with AFM Records. «Secrets» was their sixth album, a great piece of Hard Rock, put together by professionals. The album was recorded and produced by Michael Bormann and mixed by Achim Köhler (Primal Fear, Brainstorm and others). Mighty thunderous anthems like «I Will Drag You Down» solidifed the great reputation of CRYSTAL BALL.

Album:

In essence, it could be argued that the massive explosion of European power metal in the late 90s was not so much a revival of the 80s, but rather the delayed germination of seeds planted by a band that was a tad ahead of their time. This isn't to say that Helloween wasn't tied in with their 80s contemporaries, but by the time the Keepers albums had come to the forefront, it was clear that they were on a different trajectory than the mid-80s German speed metal cohort they emerged from, even when compared to more nuanced power metal bands from said scene such as Attack and Chroming Rose. But what it is even more interesting are the parallels that the power metal scene of the late 90s shared with the NWOBHM, particularly in terms of how a number of bands that had more of a retro-80s rock character were attached to the scene despite only sharing occasional similarities with the speed metal influences of Stratovarius and Gamma Ray, much like 70s progressive/hard rock leaning bands like White Spirit and Demon shared the same scene with heavier hitters like Satan and Venom.Case and point, Switzerland's Crystal Ball, a band that gets about as close to the arena oriented mid-80s sound that was possible in the late 90s while still carrying a sufficient affinity with the spacey yet metallic character that Stratovarius had ushered in on the softer end of the Helloween-influenced spectrum. Originally cutting their teeth as a cover band dubbed Cherry Pie in 1995, arguably the least likely year to be paying tribute to Warrant's long besmirched sophomore album, it's pretty clear that this band has a foundational affinity with a AOR side of the 80s coin, so much so that one might muse over them beating Edguy and Masterplan to the sound they'd usher in during the mid-2000s a good 4 to 5 years before hand. Then again, the formula at work here is a bit less influenced by the iconic 80s work of Coverdale and Dio, as this band's 1999 debut LP sees a rather peculiar hybridization of Def Leppard's commercial breakout Pyromania, the latter days of the early keyboard-infused rock sound of Joe Lynn Turner era Rainbow, and occasional hints of the more metallic leanings of Malmsteen's early tenure with Alcatrazz. If nothing else, In The Beginning proved to be a bit of an outlier in the millennial power metal context, but also one that put about as much emphasis on memorable songwriting as it did 80s nostalgia. Furthermore, while a number of more mid-paced, hard rock infused songs such as "Shake Me" and "Leave Me Alone" sound like full on tributes to Def Leppard, there is an all-encompassing tendency towards said 80s icons throughout this album due to vocalist Mark Sweeney's gravely swagger being a dead-ringer for Joe Elliott and his combined efforts with some guest work by a similar styled singer Michael Bormann creating a corresponding gang chorus backdrop right out of the Hysteria playbook. Consequently, even more heavily riff happy nods to Accept and Victory such as "Lay Down The Law" and "A Million Tears" have a slight Def Leppard character to them, as if said band had further expanded upon their heavier exploits on On Through The Night before making the commercial shift on High 'N' Dry, and also ushered in a slightly more impressive lead guitar showing than Clark and Collen were dabbling with circa 1983.All that being said, the culmination of this album's delivery still finds itself within the conventions of late 90s power metal, albeit from a slightly lighter angle than that of Stratovarius. Generally this is more apparent when guitarist Tom Graber moves over to the keyboards and Scott Leach's riff work takes on a more heavy character, which corresponds quite heavily with this album's opening anthem "Twilight Zone". Though the character of this song sounds quite similar to mid-80s Alcatrazz, the underlying groove is a tad heavier and the guitars are a bit flashier, particularly during the solo section when the tempo kicks up to an upper mid-paced stride and sounding a fair bit like one of the slower offerings on Stratovarius' Twilight Time. Similarly keyboard-steeped offerings like "Take Me Down" and "Magic" have a bit more of an overt 80s character, but end up in that same spacey, cosmic aesthetic that screams Stratovarius, while Sweeney's vocals occasionally take on a slight Udo Dirkschneider affectation. The strongest standout and arguably lone foray into overt Helloween territory is the speed metal infused "Fire Still Burns", still embodies that same 80s revivalist character and could almost pass for Malmsteen fair when accounting for the busy guitar work, to the point of rivaling contemporary offerings by Narnia and Stormwind. There is a certain charm to an album like this from a historical standpoint, particularly for anybody who still wanted a more flashy and fun style of metal/rock that cut against the "Alternative" ideal of dumbed down songwriting and morose or mundane lyrics about how much the world sucks, because this is about as clear of a rejection of the decade it was born from that one could find. It embodies the same sort of fantastical escapism that would occupy the early days of lighter, fantasy-oriented bands like Freedom Call and Edguy while also being a bit more retro in character, perhaps most closely dovetailing with the somewhat later reformation and restyled incarnation of Domain. It goes a little heavy on the balladry compared to said bands, particularly the Zero Corporation Japanese release which contains an additional nod to the Warrant meets Firehouse heard on "Me And You" in bonus track "Silence Of The Night", with maybe a slightly harder-hitting character in line with Motley Crue's "Home Sweet Home", but overall it's a pretty solid display of melodic power metal that bridges the divide between the 80s and 90s. Some might chalk it up to fire and water canceling each other out as hinted in the album art, but good songwriting can come in concise, easy to consume packages.

Bio:

In the summer of 1995 Crystal Ball started out primarily as a cover band. Since then Crystal Ball has opened for many big rock acts like Gotthard, Victory, Bonfire, Pink Cream 69, Manfred Mann, Transit, Krokus, Jaded Heart, a. m.In the spring of 1997 they got to present their first original song "Stand by Me" for the "biggest talk show German television. The single was made for promotional use only. The producer was none other than Angi Schillirô (Zero, ex-Kingdom Come,ex-China).In March 1998 the band had the opportunity to write a championship-song for the international boxer "Stefan Angehrn" from Switzerland. The single "Eye to Eye" was produced by Tommy Newton in Hanover (Germany) and was released in September 1998.During the summer of 1998 the band recorded their first full length CD at the Area 51 Studios in Hanover. Again they worked with Tommy Newton, who has worked with bands such as Helloween, Victory, Scorpions, Conception, Headcrash and Elegy. In a period of ten weeks they recorded an album featuring a wide variety of hard-rock styles on ten tracks. It's Called: „In the Beginning. In November 1998 Crystal Ball got signed by Zero Corporation from Japan, who released the album all over Asia in February 1999.The Japanese-edition featured the bonus-track: „Silence of the night". Their song „Fire still burns" was played in Koh Sakais: „Heavy Metal Syndicate". This was followed by an interview in „Burrn!" magazine. Due to business issues Zero Corporation had to stop its business, and the CD was withdrawn from the market. It was re-released by Toshiba-EMI in September 1999.Point Music from Germany released the album for Europe in April 1999. Just after making the video to "Me and You", Crystal Ball started touring in Switzerland and Germany. They got good album- and live-reviews in important magazines all over Europe like: Breakout, Metal Hammer, Metal Heart, Powerplay and so on. In autumn 1999 they supported Krokus on their Swiss-tour and played even more shows in Germany. From May to July 2000, the band recorded their 2nd album "Hard Impact", again with Tommy Newton. The bonus-track "Goodbye Hero" is exclusively on Japanese edition. "Hard Impact" was released on October 23rd in Europe by Point Music. Just in the first week after the release the album went into the Swiss Top 100. A video featuring "Queen of the night" has been produced, and they did a german/swiss support tour with Pretty Maids in February 2001. The new album makes clear, that the hopes in Crystal Ball are even surpassed by "Hard Impact". The less polished sound combined with improved songwriting, saves the eighties-rock and takes it to the 21st century. The reviews from German Hardrock-magazines are amazing.

Album:

If you are missing Bon Jovi first records, Foreigner's best songs, Def Leppard's first masterpieces and wondering if this style was definitively dead, jump on this Hard Impact. From the first minute to the last one, it is an invitation to sing under your shower, to forget all your problems, to place it in your car and turn the volume level at the maximum position. Even if it rains hard outside your car, you will have this "flying feeling" that nothing can hurt you today ... hooopps here comes a truck !!!Those of you who think that last Bon Jovi wasn't very honest, that last Def Leppard's records have been betrayal to the melodic hard rock style, don't worry Crystal Ball's Hard Impact is the kind of CD drug you need. From Queen of the Nights ("à la" Pink Cream), Never Surrender or Step by Step ("à la" Jaded Heart), Passion or Crystal Ball (fast songs), Soul Mate (whooaaawww!), FM (another whoooaaawww!), to Shine On or Won't Bite (both reminding me Foreigner), Crystal Ball serves us 10 songs, 10 killers, 10 knock-your-brain songs, one better the other.Perfect ... simply perfect. If you are a fan of Pink Cream, Jaded Heart, Foreigner, Def Leppard or Shakra run as fast as you can to the nearest metal store. And if you fall in love with this Hard Impact, here comes a small piece of advise for you : this is their second record and the first one (Crystal Ball) is as good as this one. Have a Crystal Ball day my friends !!!

Album:

Sometimes I like a little power in my heavy. Swiss band CRYSTAL BALL is a powerhouse that performs metal with a force to be reckoned with. Following a 6 year hiatus, a new album "Dawnbreaker" was finally released this year, and they bring with them a new energy. What makes this band especially interesting is their blend of classic Heavy Metal, euro-Rock and melodic Power Metal; some of the tracks sound like something off a EUROPE album; other times I am recalled back to IRON MAIDEN; and other times I hear RHAPSODY OF FIRE. Naturally, the musicianship is excellent, but keeping things from growing bland are the vocals; gruff and aggressive, not normally found on a melodic Power Metal album, and almost add a Lemmy-like atmosphere. The opener "Break of Dawn" is a through-and-through Heavy Metal track, with heavy and aggressive guitar-driven passages; even the vocals are percussive, putting particular emphasis on adding an extra axe blade to those of the chugging guitars. Immediately following is a strongly Euro-flavored track, "Anyone can be a Hero", with wailing guitar and vocal melodies and very, very 80's melodic progressions. A nice touch, I think; albums like this simply do not feel complete without the odd blast from the past. A song that stuck out like a sore thumb, for me, is "Skin to Skin"; at first, I thought it was an EDGUY piece, because it sounds like it could have come directly out of "Mandrake" or "Rocket Ride". A copy? Nay; a nice remembrance piece; mid-tempo but catchy, groovy, heavy and melodic.I hope this band is "Back for Good", or at least for a while. Another EDGUY-like track, complete with atmospheric synths, this is another rocking mid-tempo track that even, in terms of arrangement, reminds me a lot of STRATOVARIUS' "Kiss of Judas". Allow me to go on and on about the guitar solo; it is a damned fine work of art, and the twin harmonized solo is at a Scandinavian level. Next up, the band returns in a blaze of glory to the roots of melodic Heavy Metal in "Power Pack", which combines the aggressive grooves of METALLICA's peak era, and some additional Euro-style melodies. Lyrics are cliché as hell, but I do not care; essentially my favorite song on the album. The end track, "Bond of Love" proves that a Metal album does not need an over-abundance of guitar-shredding, blast beats and double kicks (of which this album has none) to be brimming with molten steel. Hell, I'm even noticing a few slight progressive touches here.I admire CRYSTAL BALL for not trying too hard to be Metal, for not being too cliché, and for effectively bring back to full force the essence of Heavy Metal into modern times.

The expectations are high since their latest album LifeRider is widely considered as the band's best album so far."It was quite a challenge to deliver a high-class album within a year, but we're sure that Déjà-Voodoo will step it up a notch, both regarding the songwriting as well as the sound,” comments the band. The cover artwork was designed by Thomas Ewerhard."The artwork is the perfect symbiosis between the terms déjà-vu and voodoo: Déjà-Voodoo! Our main character, a voodoo doll names Louis, is standing in the water, which mirrors him. The water is symbolic for the sub-consciousness here. Louis also wears the Crystal Ball LifeRider amulet around his neck, as a personal item. Why LOUIS? Well, keep your guesses coming!"

Album:

The crystal ball from Switzerland return with a crystallizing album with what appears to be a crystal skull on the cover – it is a pretty cool cover. The melodic heavy rockers from the same nation as Gotthard, whom they are quite similar to as well, has received ratings of three, four and five for their latest albums when we have reviewed them here at Hallowed. I think that we can conclude that they have made albums of varying quality. One thing I have noted is that when the artwork looks good, the album is good as well and this album certainly looks better than the two preceding it. The hope in advance was that this album would be anywhere near the great album Dawnbreaker that was released in 2013, but one of the troubles when making albums that follow a certain format is that it is a bit hit or miss if the album turns out good, so how about this one?Stylistically they keep to the style they have established, melodic heavy rock with energy and catchy choruses. The vocals are good, same style as countrymen Gotthard. Good sound and plenty of energy are other reflections I make when I play through this album, and that it is more dynamic than its predecessor. Quite powerful sound, quite full of life and also short enough to remain interesting for the entire playing time even if you buy the digipak album that has two bonus tracks. The variation of the album is good as well and I think this album shows a Crystal Ball that is fresher and more vital than they have been in a while. The opening salvo, the first two tracks can be described as an excellent opening with two great tracks that have a strong hit potential. It is a great opening to this album but it is not only those tracks that are really good, there are several really strong ones throughout the tracks that make up the album although the first two are the best in my opinion. There are one or two tracks that can be seen as something of fillers but no really weak one and while the argument that the album isn’t really breaking any new ground is valid, Crystallizer is good enough to make you forget about that. They are in fact making the melodic heavy rock of the highest quality, perhaps even better than acclaimed countrymen Gotthard at their best. The tenth album by Crystal Ball might be their magnum opus and if you like the melodic heavy rock with catchy choruses and plenty of energy it is certainly an album well worth checking out. And it also shows that Crystal Ball can be quite brilliant when they do things right, like this album. Anyone who like this kind of music and does not check out and get himself or herself this album has to be considered something of a moron, because this is one of few albums in this genre that might be considered for the best of the year list when 2018 is to be summarised.

Album:

To last more than 10 years in the musical world isn’t an easy thing for anyone. And to last 20 years in the Metal/Hard Rock scene is far more complicated. But to those who fight this good fight, the admiration and respect are great, especially when a band as CRYSTAL BALL is the center of attentions. And they’re here, releasing this fine double CD compilation, called “2020”.The main musical way of this Swiss quintet is already known: a blend between classic Hard Rock and Heavy Metal with some Glam Metal touches (it is clear due the musical accessibility in some parts) that never becomes old or seems outdated. And on this double CD compilation, on the first album, all songs are from the actual decade and were re-recorded by the actual line-up, and on the CD 2, the songs were re-recorded as well, but are from the past decade. This set of songs were chosen by the fans, so be prepared for an amazing rush of energy and a storm of excellent catchy choruses!“2020” was recorded, produced, mixed and mastered by Stefan Kaufmann (yes, the former ACCEPT drummer, and former drummer/guitarist of U.D.O.) at ROXX Studio, having a helping hand from Mattes on the mixing. The final result is a modern, clean and heavy sound quality that gives new life to their old songs. And everything is showing a fresh energy, like the years didn’t have passed for them. On CD 1, the best moments: the outstanding rush of energy and catchy melodies of “HELLvetia” and “Moondance” (both with very good vocals and choruses, and with Stephan playing some solo guitars), the ACCEPT touch on the guitar riffs of “Soul Mate”, the 80’s AOR/Glam Metal outfit used on “He Came to Change the World”, the mix between a slow paced set of tempos with very good harmonies shown on “My Life”, and the freaking out energy of “Forever and Eternally” (very good backing vocals on the chorus). On CD 2, the older stuff, it seems a bit more accessible, even with the new outfit given by the re-recording sessions. But the charming keyboards’ parts on “Paradise” and on “Mayday!” (both songs with a strong influence from Glam/AOR from the 80’s, and a charming chorus), the catchy rhythm of “Alive for Evermore”, of “Eye to Eye” (where BATTLE BEAST’s Noora Louhimo appears on guest vocals) and of “Suspended” (this one has great vocals and guitars), and the accessible catchy ambiance of “Anyone Can Be a Hero” are the ones everybody must hear to be introduced to CRYSTAL BALL’s work. The quintet found out an excellent way to celebrate its 20 years of existence, so enjoy “2020” as much as you can!

Album:

The album "Crysteria" opens a new chapter in Crystal Ball's history. In its third decade, the band is far from just repeating itself and you can find new, fresh and energetic elements in the music. Crystal Ball took its time during the pandemic-related break to write lots of new material, so they could choose from over 30 songs for the "Crysteria" album. Crystal Ball's new guitar player Peter Berger also contributed many songs and ideas to this album. He was a very refreshing and motivating input. The production of "Crysteria", that was taken care of by Stefan Kaufmann, improved even further and reflects the band's live energy perfectly. The album features the vocal duet "Call Of The Wild" with Ronnie Romero (Rainbow, MSG) whom the band got to know at a festival in Switzerland in 2018. The album also contains the band duet "Crystal Heart" with the guys from Jaded Heart. This song was written by members of both bands. As both bands have been friends for a long time, Crystal Ball invited Jaded Heart as special guest on their planned headliner tour in 2022.
