Bio:

Marillion /mʌˈrɪlˌjən/ are a British rock band, formed in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, England, in 1979. They are known as the most successful band to emerge from the United Kingdom's 1980s neo-progressive rock scene, having sold 15 million albums worldwide.Their recorded studio output since 1982 is composed of seventeen albums generally regarded in two distinct eras, delineated by the departure of original frontman Fish in late 1988, and the subsequent arrival of replacement Steve Hogarth in early 1989. The band achieved eight Top Ten UK albums between 1983 and 1994, including a Number One album in 1985 with Misplaced Childhood, and during the period the band were fronted by Fish they scored eleven Top 40 hits on the UK Singles Chart, including 1985's "Kayleigh", which reached No. 2 and became their biggest hit single. The first album released with Hogarth, 1989's Seasons End, was another Top Ten hit, and albums continued to chart well until their departure from EMI following the release of their 1996 live album Made Again and the dissipation of the band's mainstream popularity in the late 1990s; save for a resurgence in the mid- to late-2000s,they have essentially been a cult act since then.Marillion have achieved a further twelve Top 40 hit singles in the UK with Hogarth, including 2004's "You're Gone", which charted at No. 7 and is the biggest hit of his tenure. The band continue to tour internationally, and were ranked 38th in Classic Rock's "50 Best Live Acts of All Time" in 2008.Marillion are widely considered to have been one of the first mainstream acts to have fully recognised and tapped the potential for commercial musicians to interact with their fans via the internet, starting in around 1996, and are nowadays often characterised as a rock & roll 'Web Cottage Industry'.The history of the band's use of the Internet is described by Michael Lewis in the book Next: The Future Just Happened as an example of how the Internet is shifting power away from established elites, such as multinational record labels and record producers. The band are renowned for having an extremely dedicated following (often self-termed 'Freaks'),with some fans regularly travelling significant distances to attend single gigs, driven in large part by the close fan base involvement which the band cultivate via their website, podcasts, biennial conventions and regular fanclub publications. The release of their 2001 album Anoraknophobia, which was funded by their fans through advance orders instead of by the band signing to a record company, gained significant attention and was called "a unique funding campaign" by the BBC.Writing for The Guardian, Alexis Petridis described Marillion as "the undisputed pioneers" of fan-funded music.

Album:

Brave is the seventh studio album by Marillion, released in 1994. It charted at number 10 on the UK Albums Chart, being the last of the band's albums to reach the Top 10 in the United Kingdom until F E A R reached number 4 in 2016.The album, which mixed classic symphonic progressive rock with standard rock, was ranked by Raw as one of the 20 greatest albums of 1994.In 2000 it was selected by Classic Rock as one of the "30 Best Albums of the 90s", and in 2003 as one of "Rock's 30 Greatest Concept Albums".“We lost a lot of fans on Brave,” said singer Hogarth in 2018. “It wasn’t well received. Everybody now looks back and goes, ‘What a great album.’ But nobody was saying that the day it came out.” “I think it needed at least a year or two after its release before people saw it for what it was,” said guitarist Rothery in 2018.

Album:

As we recorded both the Sunday night shows at the Holland and Montréal 2013 Weekends, we have decided to make both concerts available in each format. All of the tracks from Marillion's most recent studio album 'Sounds That Can't Be Made' were performed plus a selection of other fan favourites.Although the tracklists are very similar it's worth pointing out that these are very different shows; Holland delivers the usual grandeur of the Port Zélande gigs whilst Montréal brings a more 'Rock & Roll' vibe to the collection. We have been working very hard behind the scenes to bring you what we think is our finest release so far and hopefully one that offers a great range of packaging options, which are as follows. For those that want the complete set and something really special to celebrate the widely acclaimed studio album that is 'Sounds That Can't Be Made', we offer a unique Deluxe Collector's Box Set.This is a limited edition box set stuffed with all kinds of 'Sounds That Can't Be Made' related goodies (full details below).Only 300 will ever be made and these will all be personally hand signed by the band. We anticipate that these will not last long so if you want one you need to make sure you are ready when they become available for Pre-Order on Thursday 15 May.With the Blu-ray format becoming ever more popular we have concentrated on bringing you the best possible sound and vision in glorious high definition. The blu-ray edition features both the Holland and Montreal Sunday night shows plus a special bonus disc entitled 'Unsound' which contains a high res 5.1 mix of the studio album and 12 demos recorded during the making of STCBM.The DVD version will be in NTSC only and will again feature both concerts across 4 discs.

Album:

F.E.A.R. (F*ck Everyone And Run) is the eighteenth MARILLION album to be released next September 23, 2016, but it's already available to who supported the recording through PledgeMusic. The album's title surprised many people, but according to singer Steve Hogarth it's adopted not in anger or with any intention to shock. It is adopted and sung (in the song 'The New Kings') tenderly, in sadness and resignation inspired by an England, and a world, which increasingly functions on an “Every man for himself” philosophy."F.E.A.R." sees the band taking on the big themes but they do not see it as their place to preach to people. The gold cover artwork is likely to be a reference to El Dorado, who was a mythical tribal chief from what is now Colombia, and who supposedly covered himself in gold dust which he then washed off in a lake while his tribe threw gold trinkets into the water. Over time, the word has come to mean a lost city filled with gold.Opener 'El Dorado', which is split over five segments and extending to over 16 minutes, possesses the sublime musical passages that Marillion have always been known for. Lyrically, examines the notions of political entitlement and the modern challenges for the UK 'Living in FEAR' come ostensibly as a song about peace, with archetypal sentiments of disarmament, it’s a polished, succinct track that also has a sublime earworm of a chorus. Then 'The Leavers' is an expansive song that contains five distinct, seductive sections. With soaring Rothery guitar solos and opulent keyboards, it’s one of the finest tracks that the band have released over recent years.'White Paper' is a shorter track, a 'format song'. There’s a distinct sadness to the lyrics that’s neatly equaled by the authoritative musical backdrop, while 'The New Kings' bring a powerful lyrical statement on the general state of the world, the track runs to almost 20 minutes of luscious progressive rock.On "F.E.A.R." Marillion returns to the 'progressive rock' album format, but musically it's the same Marillion we all love; melodic, at places atmospheric, velvety crafted and with that sweet vocal melodies. It's a strong, palatable new offering from these great British musicians.

Album:

Available on 2xCD, DVD, and Blu Ray formats, Marbles In The Park – the centrepiece of the 2015 Marillion weekend convention at Center Parcs, Port Zelande, in The Netherlands – is a curious release. Not least because it coincides with the release – via the band’s website – of a 3 DVD/Bluray – box set of all 3 nights – the other two, being a ‘normal’ set (including the whole of Anoraknophobia) and Singles Night – a reasonably chronological canter through the band’s singles output, including the Fish era. The latter, a ‘must have’ for fans, I would have thought. The other two nights are also each available on 2xCD sets.So really, there’s a good range of ‘pick and mix’ options. But given the fanaticism and loyalty of the band’s fan base, it’s hard to see who would opt for Marbles In The Park on DVD or Bluray, when you effectively get all three nights for the price of two in the Out Of The Box, box set.And for those on a budget – at the time of writing at least – the Marbles In The Park CD set is significantly cheaper on the band’s website than Amazon’s pre order price. But, back to the main event – part of each bi-annual Marillion weekend focuses on a past release and in 2015 it was Marbles (2004) turn to be given an end to end stunning live show, with spectacular lights and back drop projections, supplemented with encores of ‘Out Of This World’ and ‘King’ (Afraid Of Sunlight (1995)) and the more recent ‘Sounds That Can’t Be Made’.It has to be said, having just seen the FEAR tour (and the dramatic borrowed set opener of ‘The Invisible Man’), that Marillion really are on the top of their game at present. Whoever is working on their stage shows has got them visually just about perfect. Add that to the band’s artistry, and H’s energy and charisma, and you’ve got a truly winning combination. From a personal perspective I’d have to say Marbles isn’t perhaps the Marillion album I’d reach for out of choice but, as with their entire catalogue, there’s always some lurking gems and from an audio/visual perspective Marbles In The Park is both compelling and utterly absorbing. Some might say, ‘look, we’ve already had Marbles On The Road on DVD (2004), so why would I want to invest?’ Well, let me tell you. In The Park makes On The Road (which incidentally, didn’t include the full unabridged album) look like a home movie. It’s a piece of glorious widescreen cinematography that you will want to watch again, and again.

Album:

It all started with the release of "With Friends From The Orchestra" in 2019, when Marillion teamed up with "In Praise of Folly", a string quartet accompanied by French horn and flute, to record a stunning album full of re-arranged Marillion treasures. That same year, Marillion took these very special versions on tour and even added a few more songs like "Gaza" and "Zeparated Out" to the setlist, presenting them in a whole new light. It was in November 2019 when Marillion played a concert at St. David’s Hall in Cardiff, being part of the ‘Marillion With Friends from the Orchestra Live 2019’ tour. What paved the way for such an undertaking had its beginning in a collaboration of the rock veterans with the ‘In Praise of Folly’ string quartet, joining the band for the recording of the ‘With Friends From The Orchestra’ album in 2019. This longplayer includes Marillion classics, newly interpreted in such a new setup. Touring with such a tremendous record in the back-pocket was a logical consequence and a couple of extra songs have been added for the live performance.‘Gaza’, one of these tunes, has been placed in pole position, opening the concert. Furthermore it’s ‘Zeparated Out’ that has been played that November night in Cardiff, a track that is surrounded by lot of Marillion classics. With ‘Season’s End’ the band takes fans back to 1989 while the centerpiece of the show is certainly the four chapter of ‘The New Kings’. Taken from the ‘F.E.A.R. (Fuck Everyone and Run)’ album, the song is 17 minutes epos that shines brightly in this band/orchestra set-up. Excellently crafted music and a story-telling vibe acts as a treat for ears, mind, and soul.I mentioned already ‘Zeparated Out’ and you might have wondered if this is a typo since the song originally is called ‘Separated Out’. But it’s not a typo. The ‘Z’ in the beginning is a hint that the song contains an extra. Marillion embedded a snippet of Led Zeppelin’s ‘Kashmir’ and suddenly, the ‘Z’ has a meaning. Not only musically, but also visually, this live release is a well-made one. Captured by numerous cameras from various angles, the songs shine in bright spotlight as well as they are supported by a digital backdrop that goes hand in hand with a great light show, both not taking away focus of the music. The Blu-Ray includes an appr. 35 minutes documentary too. ‘Marillion Making Fans’ provides an interesting view behind the scenes and gives context to the idea, that slowly and successfully grew. All in all, we can conclude that this live album is a special one that will be a delight for fans of the band, and it is also a great release for friends of well-crafted progressive music. Marillion stays true to themselves and at the same time never stand still, this what this album is all about.

Album:

In March 1984, Marillion released their second studio album Fugazi, which went on to be certified Gold and reach number 5 in the UK albums charts. The classic album spawned two singles Assassing and Punch & Judy, both reaching #22 and #29 on the UK singles charts respectively.Fugazi was the first Marillion album to feature Ian Mosley on drums and percussion, replacing Mick Pointer after the highly successful ScriptForA Jester’s Tear.It also included Fish, SteveRothery, PeteTrewavasand Mark Kelly. This 3CD/Blu-Ray book opens with brand-new 2021 remixed stereo versions by Andy Bradfield and Avril Mackintosh, who also remixed the deluxe editions of Script For A Jester’s Tear and Clutching At Straws. It also includes a show from The Spectrum, Montreal, Canada recorded in 1984. The performance includes fan favourites from both Fugazi and their debut album Script For A Jester’s Tear in the form of tracks such as Jigsaw, Incubus, He Knows You Know, Chelsea Monday and much more. The Blu-ray features 96k/24-bit versions of both the new Fugazi stereo remix and the Live at The Spectrum, Montreal, Canada concertandcontains a 5.1 surround sound version of the new 2021 stereo remix of Fugazi. The Blu-ray also contains a compelling look at the fascinating story behind Fugazi in a new documentary, entitled The Performance Has Just Begun, which features all the band members talking about how the album came to fruition. This is followed by the band giving an insightful track-by-track commentary of the album, as well as the music video of Assassing with both the original and remix audio.

Album:

earMUSIC is delighted to announce the release of Marillion’s 20th studio album, “An Hour Before It’s Dark”, on March 4, 2022. A first peak into the album is available as of now with the single “Be Hard On Yourself”."An Hour Before It's Dark", whether it's the last hour you were allowed to play outside as a child before you had to go home, a reference to the fight against time in relation to the climate crisis or the last minutes in a person's life, Marillion once again puts the finger on the pulse of time. Be it social, political or personal issues, Marillion has never minced words and has always found a way to combine them with an own unique sound, known for incredible songwriting, melodies and top-notch musicianship, while swimming against the tide, not bending to norms and limitations.“Despite the seemingly bleak contemplations across this album - the virus, our mortality, medical science, care AND Leonard Cohen (ha ha) - the overall feeling of the music is surprisingly upbeat. I think the band is as on form as it ever was really, and the addition of Choir Noir has added another new soul and colour to things.”Like its predecessor, 2016's critically acclaimed and chart-topping album “F*** Everyone And Run (F E A R)”, “An Hour Before It's Dark” was recorded at Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios, which also provided the perfect backdrop for the carefully chosen selection of behind-the-scenes footage in form of a documentary on the making of the album and a performance of “Murder Machines” from Real World that will be released together with the album.Marillion is currently on the road with the "Light At The End Of The Tunnel" tour in the UK, which will be followed by several Marillion weekends until summer 2022 and a major European tour in autumn 2022.Founded in 1979, British rock band Marillion has, over the course of 19 studio albums, become one of the most commercially successful progressive rock bands of the 80s and is still one of the most outstanding representatives of the genre. Marillion embraced the potential of the internet for both its commercial approach and to interact with the audience, long before most of the peers.
