Bio:

Rival Sons is an American rock band formed in Long Beach, California, in 2009 and loosely based in Nashville. The band consists of Jay Buchanan (lead vocals), Scott Holiday (guitar), Dave Beste (bass guitar) and Michael Miley (drums). They are joined by keyboard player Todd Ögren when touring. They are signed to Atlantic Records via Dave Cobb's label Low Country Sound, an imprint of Elektra. They have released seven albums and one EP.Rival Sons formed in Long Beach, where Jay Buchanan and Michael Miley lived. Buchanan previously recorded as a solo artist and with his Buchanan band. He independently released All Understood in 2004 and True Love EP in 2006. Rival Sons formed from the remnants of guitarist Scott Holiday's previous band.He had been active in a number of bands, including Human Lab, who were signed to Atlantic Records, but which he left and formed Black Summer Crush with Michael Miley, Robin Everhart and Thomas Flowers. Black Summer Crush recorded an album and the vocals on those tracks were later replaced by Jay Buchanan and released as Rival Sons’ debut album. In 2006 Holiday came across Buchanan while searching on MySpace for a singer. Drummer Michael Miley had previously worked with Buchanan (as well as having been in Veruca Salt and the Carson Daly TV show band) and he had met bassist Robin Everhart playing at a benefit concert at Isaac Hayes house for Hurricane Katrina in Long Beach. The union of Holiday, Buchanan, Everhart and Miley led to the formation of Rival Sons.As a singer-songwriter Buchanan was skeptical about joining a rock and roll band but after seeing the reception to the band's debut album Before the Fire (2009) produced by Dave Cobb, Buchanan committed to Rival Sons full-time. Jack Rivera of The Huffington Post declared them "A rock band to watch" in November 2009.After the success of Before the Fire, the band recorded a self-titled EP (independently released) in 2010, which caught the attention of Earache Records founder Digby Pearson and the band was offered a record deal in November 2010. The signing led to the band immediately recording the album Pressure & Time on the Earache label in early 2011. Their self-titled EP was re-released digitally by Earache Records in February 2011, from which their debut European single, "Torture", was taken.Rival Sons played at Gene Simmons' "Aces & Angels" Super Bowl party on February 2, 2011,before making their European debut appearance at Camden Barfly on February 12, 2011, for the HMV Next Big Thing. The band Vintage Trouble supported their act and the show sold out in advance, which started a nearly unbroken string of European sell-out shows. In March 2011 a string of shows at Canadian Music Week, SXSW and the House of Blues was announced.Rival Sons released Pressure & Time in June 2011. It reached number one on Amazon's Hard Rock best sellers and nineteen on the Billboard Hot 100.Following this acclaim, they were invited to perform as a supporting act for AC/DC, Alice Cooper and Kid Rock shows.During this time, Rival Sons also performed on the race track during a televised show of the Indianapolis 500.After the success of Before the Fire, the band recorded a self-titled EP (independently released) in 2010, which caught the attention of Earache Records founder Digby Pearson and the band was offered a record deal in November 2010. It reached number one on Amazon's Hard Rock best sellers and nineteen on the Billboard Hot 100.Rival Sons played a string of Canadian dates in May 2011, as well as SXSW, Hangout festival and the Viper Room, before returning to Europe to play a series of European festivals such as Azkena, Sonisphere, Rock Werchter, Main Square, Putte Parken, and Bospop in July 2011. Then the band joined Judas Priest, Queensrÿche and Lady Starlight on tour in the UK.Rival Sons' track "Torture" was featured in the film Real Steel in October 2011 and the band, by personal request of Amy Lee, supported Evanescence in the US in October 2011, whom they would play with again in January 2012.While Rival Sons continued to tour extensively, in 2012 they featured on the Harald Schmidt Show and played an acoustic set at the annual Classic Rock awards at the Roundhouse in London. They were voted 'Best New Band' by listeners of Planet Rock Radio. In mid-2012, Pressure & Time was voted number two album of the year and the band named "Breakthrough Artist of the Year" by Classic Rock Magazine.

Album:

Set for release June 2014 via Earache Records, Great Western Valkyrie puts Rival Sons freewheeling fuzz and improvisational stage ethos to wax and cements their position as America’s next great rock’n’roll band. With a ‘conscious decision for this band to be just what it is’ (Jay Buchanan) this album is more cohesive than any Rival Sons album before. From the beach cities of Southern California, the time was ripe for Rival Sons. Guitarist Scott Holiday had long been searching for something that would fit his psychedelic vision and fuzzy garage rock tones, then things fell into place when blues singer/songwriter Jay Buchanan put the solo career on the backburner and gave rock ‘n’ roll a chance. Scott Holiday: ‘a random find on the Internet points me to Jay Buchanan. In 13 seconds I realize I have just come across the singer I've looked for over the last 10-12 years of my life.’Jay was invited to record vocals on the band’s debut release ‘Before the fire’ ‘Singing On My Way in a single take. We never even ran tape a 2nd time. That was a first to witness for me. And so it was born... Rival Sons.’Four albums on, with an ever-growing fan base the band go from strength to strength and have never looked back.Emerging from a scene where over-production was commonplace, writing and recording in a hotbox of activity without prior discussion or preparation came to be what Rival Sons is about. ‘We have a reputation for recording our albums very quickly and keeping things very live - off the floor.’As Holiday puts it after recording Before The Fire: ‘This is just the simplest way to not cheat ourselves or the listener. Rock and Roll can’t be over-thought, and if it is, it loses its immediacy and instinct … it needs to be a knife fight, not a choreographed knife dance’.The Rival Sons EP was recorded soon after Jay Buchanan joined the band and it caught the attention of Earache Records founder Digby Pearson who signed a deal in November 2010 that led to the recording of Pressure & Time in early 2011. The album was recorded in Los Angeles with producer Dave Cobb (who has worked on all Rival Sons albums) and released worldwide in May 2011. The band committed to creating an experience that closely matches the attitude and excitement of one of their live performances. Coming straight off a 4 week stint on the road, Rival Sons wrote, recorded, and mixed the album in just 20 days; ensuring a rawness for both the listener and the band; explains Buchanan, ‘in the code of the Samurai, any decision must be made between 3 and 5 breaths … writing by that code forces us to act, go with our instincts and really, truly listen to each other. Creatively, you’re bringing your most immediate instincts.’Pressure & Time opened a door to Europe where from their first European show at Camden Barfly to Shepherds Bush Empire in 2012, there has hardly been a show that was not sold out. The band quickly picked up European shows and festivals and became known for a wild improvisational live show.

Album:

Following the release of their album "Great Western Valkyrie" in 2014, a year which saw the band appear on "Later… With Jools Holland" in the U.K., "Late Show With David Letterman" in the U.S., appear at the Glastonbury and Isle Of Wight festivals, plus consistently sell out their worldwide headline tours, RIVAL SONS have announced that their fifth album, titled "Hollow Bones", will be available later this year. Vocalist Jay Buchanan said: "Each record we've made has been part of a distillation toward revealing the band's essence. This record finally is the release of the unapologetic, wild beast that has long lived within the ribs of RIVAL SONS howling to be freed." Recorded in Nashville's LCS studios, "Hollow Bones" saw recent two-time Grammy winner Dave Cobb on producer duties yet again. Cobb commented: "RIVAL SONS are the best rock 'n' roll band on the planet!"Always a band who feel artwork is as much a part of the album experience as the music, their first outing was a collaboration with legendary artist Storm Thorgerson, known for many iconic album covers from the likes of PINK FLOYD and LED ZEPPELIN. This time they have teamed up with artist Martin Wittfooth, whose intensely allegorical paintings all suggest the future of the human condition — without showing a single person — on a piece called "Rainsong". Guitarist Scott Holiday commented: "I discovered Martin Wittfooth about halfway through making 'Hollow Bones'. I was immediately drawn into his work. I loved his imagery with animals and felt it was calm and unnerving all at the same time. I also loved the touch of whimsy and beautiful psychedelic overtones he used. First time I saw his work, I immediately felt it was right for this album."I won't try to overly interpret the album cover or explain in detail why I believe it works perfectly with the album… but I can safely say I think this just might be my favorite cover of ours yet."With their last two albums charting in the Top 20 around the world ("Great Western Valkyrie" reached No. 14 in the UK), a rabid fan base and incendiary live shows, 2016 is set to be their best year yet.RIVAL SONS are currently the sole support on the current BLACK SABBATH "The End" tour, they are also playing Download festival's main stage on Saturday, June 11.

Album:

Since 2009, Long Beach, California’s Rival Sons has done a fine job preserving the wild spirit of Rock-n-Roll bliss. Now in their prime, Rival Sons – Jay Buchanan (vocals), Scott Holiday (guitar), Mike Miley (drums), and Dave Beste (bass) – are pleased to announce the release of the band’s new album, Feral Roots, slated to drop on Friday, January 25, 2019 via Atlantic Records.Channeling the likes of Led Zeppelin, Rival Sons blend a modern sting of live, Blues based Rock. As a loud, potent quartet, Rival Sons has perhaps single-handedly put the danger back in Rock-n-Roll. In 2011, Rival Sons released the album Pressure & Time, which garnered a buzz that landed the LP at No. 1 on Amazon’s Hard Rock Best Sellers list. Later, Rival Sons’ sixth studio album, 2016’s Hollow Bones, became the band’s highest charting album ever in the U.S. How did they do it? Well, Rival Sons’ signature sound comes from the band’s belief in recording their albums live in the studio without an overly polished production. At the end of the day, this genuine recording process has proven to be the only way to go for this West Coast act.A true road band, Rival Sons built a strong following through extensive touring which landed the band on multiple festival stages like The Download Festival along with playing direct support on Black Sabbath’s The End farewell tour in 2016. All this in mind, Rival Sons start the new year off by way of Feral Roots. Rival Sons’ seventh studio effort, Feral Roots was produced by Grammy Award winning Producer Dave Cobb (Zac Brown Band, Chris Stapleton) at Nashville, Tennessee’s own RCA Studio A and Muscle Shoals Sound Studio in Alabama. At their best, Rival Sons kick off Feral Roots with the raw, stop and go thrust of “Do Your Worst.” Rough around the edges, the track’s engaging chorus makes it the perfect opener for Feral Roots. For those fans with a sweet tooth, “Sugar on the Bone” livens with a percussive swing and a little cow bell before the masterful, 1970s style of “Back in the Woods.” Not even halfway through, Feral Roots really begins to show the immense songwriting talent of Rival Sons. That said, the next track, “Look Away” showcases a frothy old-time sound that begins with a Blue-Grass slide guitar intro. A striking vocalist, Buchanan’s tender vocals and harmony sit warmly atop Holiday’s moving guitar chords. The album’s eponymous track, “Feral Roots” is untamed with radical melody changes amidst a psychedelic, semi mellow composition. A stand out, “Too Bad” is a slow Blues wonder, featuring heavily devoted and vindictive vocals emphasizing this man’s desire to know if his lover is thinking of him. Up next, “Stood By Me” presents organ inspired guitar riffs with a jam session vibe similar to Steely Dan and The Doors. Moving along, Feral Roots continues to deliver enjoyable music with the euphoric “Imperial Joy,” the floating sonics of “All Directions,” and a celebratory “End of Forever.” Closing the album, “Shooting Stars” praises our life and triumphs with Gospel style back-up singers, making this the perfect way for Rival Sons to conclude their newest endeavor. In a catchy and expressive collection of new material, Rival Sons’s Feral Roots is surely worth the wait since the band’s last album was released over two years ago. Full of skilled guitar licks, stimulating vocals, and a rattling rhythm section, Feral Roots is a consummate example of why Rival Sons are experts at Rock-n-Roll. In enough words, Rival Sons has always taken an artistic approach to songwriting, never trying to write a ‘hit single’ – and it certainly works for them. Another great showing from Rival Sons,

Album:

Rival Sons had a feat and a half on their hands if they were to outperform 2019’s Feral Roots. However, in the battle for the top spot in the league of their albums, Darkfighter appears a force to be reckoned with.Rival Sons’ mastery of both a modern, fuzzy take on solid bluesy rock and tender acoustic balladry are displayed throughout, marshalled by the commanding preacher-man voice of Jay Buchanan. Opening with two such compelling numbers, Mirrors and leading single Nobody Wants To Die, Darkfighter is liberally peppered with mouth-watering guitar à-la-Jimmy-Page with notes of Raconteurs-esque Americana, especially on quieter mid-album tracks, namely Bright Light.Later this year, Darkfighter’s counterpart, Lightbringer, will be released. As with Darkfighter, the bar to meet is high.Regarding “Nobody Wants to Die,” vocalist Jay Buchanan shares, “You live your life knowing that the sword of Damocles is hanging over your head by a thread. You’re fully aware of the impermanence of your existence, but you can’t think about it all the time—or it’ll fuck your life up. I used to work in a mortuary as a service advisor for a few years, driving and opening the hearses. I’d attend three funerals per day. Sometimes, they would be filled over capacity. Other times, it would just be me, a priest, and a hole in the ground. It doesn’t matter who you are; the great equalizer is coming. I was thinking of this because the music sounded like pursuit.”Lead guitarist Scott Holiday added, “Records are a healthy form of escapism. I hope this one takes you as far away as possible. Our intent was to create a cinematic body of work. As soon as the doors shut behind you, you’re enveloped on the ride. This is the sound of us really coming into our own. We’ve gotten further from our influences and gotten closer to what we are. DARKFIGHTER sounds like the Rival Sons.”

Album:

Classic Rock favorites RIVAL SONS will release its new album, “Lightbringer“, on October 20. It notably marks the group’s second full-length offering to be unveiled in 2023, following June’s critically acclaimed companion album “Darkfighter”.About “Lightbringer”, guitarist Scott Holiday said: “When you do two albums back to back like this, there are a lot of things to think about. The first record has to pack enough of a punch and tell enough of a story for the second half to have an even bigger impact. We balanced them out with energy and meaning, but the follow-up always needed to deliver a bigger blow. I think ‘Lightbringer’ provides this.”This is a rollicking, roaring, collection of new songs plenty of big dirty riffs, frenetic drumbeats, groovy basslines and Jay Buchanan ‘s bluesy wails. On many aspects, the new material brings back old-school RIVAL SONS sound. It has all of the early elements of what RIVAL SONS is and was.

Album:

In June 2021, classic rockers RIVAL SONS delivered two live performances from Catalina Island, California. They were originally streamed to fans at home across the world, many of whom were still in lockdown because of the Covid-19 pandemic. At the time the band stated: “We’ve all been through so much this past year and a half. We have longed to be on the road playing for you. As you know, we launched our label Sacred Tongue Recordings and have been re-releasing our early material. We felt that revisiting these first two records in a live, prestigious setting was the best way to give them the first-class treatment that our humble beginnings couldn’t provide.”Now, for the first time, these performances will be released. ”Pair Of Aces: Live from Catalina Island (PART 1)” is available now. ”Pair Of Aces: Live from Catalina Island (PART 2)” will be released on December 13.Frontman Jay Buchanan comments: “To finally release both performances feels good. When we recorded these the band was neck deep in what was to become the Darkfighter / Lightbringer 2-disc collection so breaking away from all of that heavy lifting to go blow some dust off of our origin story felt amazing.””Pair Of Aces: Live from Catalina Island (PART 1)” is a raw, unfiltered glimpse at a band raging against the isolation of the times, performing live their very first, 2009 indie debut album entirely. And rocks.
