Bio:

Cactus is an American hard rock band, formed in 1969.Cactus was initially conceived in late 1969 by former Vanilla Fudge members bassist Tim Bogert and drummer Carmine Appice after plans to team up with guitarist Jeff Beck were scuppered when Beck had an automobile accident and was out of the music scene for over a year.In early 1970, Bogert and Appice brought in blues guitarist Jim McCarty from Mitch Ryder's Detroit Wheels and The Buddy Miles Express, and singer Rusty Day (born Russell Edward Davidson) from The Amboy Dukes. This line-up produced three albums, Cactus (1970), One Way...Or Another (1971), and Restrictions (1971), before intraband troubles led to McCarty quitting at the end of 1971. Shortly afterwards Day was fired from the group. The fourth and last Cactus album, 'Ot 'N' Sweaty(1972), featured original rhythm section Bogert and Appice joined by Werner Fritzschings on guitar, Duane Hitchings on keyboards and Peter French (ex-Leaf Hound and Atomic Rooster) on vocals. After Cactus's dissolution in 1972, Bogert and Appice joined with Beck to form Beck, Bogert & Appice. After one studio album, the self-titled Beck, Bogert & Appice (1973) and one live album, Beck, Bogert & Appice Live (in Japan) (1973, released only in Japan), the band dissolved. Their second album remains unreleased to this day, along with recordings of the band's last concert at the Rainbow Theatre in London on January 26, 1974.Having made a name for himself in Detroit's rock scene as a force to be reckoned with, Rusty Day worked to restore one of Detroit's most legendary bands, The Band Detroit, to the national stage. The Band Detroit was formed as an offshoot of The Detroit Wheels by members Steve Gaines, Ted "T-Mel" Smith, Nathaniel Peterson, Terry Emery, Bill Hodgeson, and others. The band's initial flame burned out quickly due to many different issues going on at once. There's a recording of Rusty Day, Steve Gaines, and the rest of the band performing in 1973 called The Band Detroit - The Driftwood Tapes. The New Cactus Band, led by Duane Hitchings, released one album, Son of Cactus, and featured none of the original Cactus members. Mike Pinera, formerly of Blues Image and Iron Butterfly, came in on guitar, along with Roland Robinson on bass and Jerry Norris on drums. The band then toured live in the Midwest and on the East Coast in mid 1973 with Captain Beyond drummer Bobby Caldwell and former Gregg Allman bass player Charlie Souza. The New Cactus Band soon disbanded. Their sole album peaked at #183 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart. In 1976, Rusty Day formed another version of Cactus in Longwood, Florida, where he had relocated. This version of Cactus featured Steve "Kahoutek" Dansby on guitar, John "Soybean Slim" Sauter (who later played on Ted Nugent's Weekend Warriors) on bass guitar, and Gary "Madman" Moffatt (who currently plays for .38 Special) on drums. This was the longest lasting 1970s line-up of the band, which ended around 1979.On June 3, 1982, Rusty Day was murdered at his own house in Longwood, Florida. He and his son were shot to death by an unknown gang of drug dealers. The case has never been solved and remains open. After a long hiatus, Cactus re-emerged in June 2006 with two appearances in New York City: A radio appearance on The Radiochick Show, and their first show since 1972 at B.B. King's Blues Club in Times Square (on June 3, 2006). This show was a warm up for the gig which sparked the reunion, an appearance at the Sweden Rock Festival in Norje, Sweden on June 9, 2006. The 2006 version of Cactus saw original members Appice, Bogert and McCarty reunited and joined by former Savoy Brown frontman Jimmy Kunes on vocals. Randy Pratt joined the band in New York and Sweden on harmonica. The group also released a new album, Cactus V (2006). In 2008, McCarty left the band again and, coincidentally repeating history, was once again replaced by Werner Fritzchings. Elliot Dean Rubinson replaced Tim Bogert who retired from touring. In 2011, McCarty returned to the band with Pete Bremy taking over on bass. Bremy also took over for Bogert in Vanilla Fudge and is the only non-original member who has played for both bands. The 2012 line-up was Jim McCarty, Carmine Appice, Jimmy Kunes, Pete Bremy and Randy Pratt. In early 2016, Carmine Appice announced on his Twitter and Facebook pages that Cactus was coming out with a new album at the end of May that year. The cover of the album has been posted on both Appice's and Pete Bremy's Facebook pages. The album's name is "Black Dawn", and is very much anticipated by the Cactus fans, as it will be their first studio album in ten years. In early June, Jim McCarty was interviewed on a podcast show, and he said that due to some complications, the release date of Black Dawn had been held up and should hopefully be out by early July. However, he has also stated that it will definitely be out by September, when the band will be touring for the album, the first show of which will be called the Cactus CD Release Party. McCarty has also revealed that the album contains eight brand new songs as well as two never before heard songs by the original band that had recently been unearthed by Carmine Appice.

Album:

Cactus was born from the detritus of Vanilla Fudge in 1970 when drummer Carmine Appice and bassist Tim Bogert were planning to start a band with Rod Stewart and Jeff Beck. Beck came close to dying in a car crash, so plans for that band were put on hold (Bogert and Appice would team up with Beck a couple of years later), while the rhythm section went on to recruit guitarist Jim McCarty and singer Rusty Day, and called the new group Cactus. With four albums recorded in two years and killer live shows to boot, Cactus was often called the ‘American Led Zeppelin’. After the original group disbanded in 1972, Day tried to carry the Cactus flag with various incarnations, but his tragic murder in 1982 put the kibosh on that. Then in 2006, Bogert, Appice and McCarty regrouped with singer Jimmy Kunes and harmonica player Randy Pratt for an album and tour. Ten years later with a new bass player (Pete Bremy replaced the retiring Bogert in 2011), Cactus is back with their sixth studio album, Black Dawn.On this 10-song release, Cactus make more heavy American rock. Tunes like the mighty stomp of “Mamma Bring It Home” is epitome of what this band is all about — heavy and driving with catchy choruses you can’t get out of your head. McCarty lays back in a simple single-note slicing lead here lifts the song even higher.“Dynamite” makes use of Pratt behind Appice’s snapping drums and another catchy chorus. Two previously unreleased Cactus tracks featuring the original lineup end the CD. “Another Way Or Another” is a jangly guitar instrumental with big loud moments of McCarty’s wah-wah lead, and “C-70 Blues” features a growling bass and guitar feedback before it launches into a hard rock groove. As a package, the 2016 version of Cactus lives up to the legend on Black Dawn.

Album:

70s classic rock legends Cactus came to be known as The American Led Zeppelin, a moniker they owned by virtue of their explosive blues rock stylings, subdued yet undeniably brilliant musicianship, not to mention their energetic and vivacious stage presence which made them a staple of arena rock venues around the globe. Now the band have returned with a smashing new album called “Tightrope” that strikes a delicate balance between powerful, driving rockers and more complex, heady album tracks. Still led by iconic drummer Carmine Appice alongside long-time members Jimmy Kunes on vocals and Randy Pratt on harmonica; “Tightrope” is according to Appice: “one of the best Cactus albums we’ve ever done. From playing to production and songs, we really took a step up!”...They are joined by new lead guitarist/vocalist Paul Warren (ex-Rod Stewart, Tina Turner, Joe Cocker) and James Caputo on bass. “Tightrope” will also give long-time Cactus fans a reason to cheer as it includes special guest appearances from original Cactus guitarist Jim McCarty and singer Phil Naro!“Tightrope” will be available on digipak CD, a deluxe 2LP set with a gatefold jacket and colored vinyl, and of course digital platforms everywhere starting on April 2nd, 2021, courtesy of Cleopatra Records!

Album:

America’s Cactus returns with a thunderous sequel that expands the raw blues-rock vision of 2024’s Temple Of Blues with even more fire, swagger, and authority!I’m excited to be working again with Carmine Appice and his reformed Cactus on behalf of the new blues rock album, Temple Of Blues II, that’s due out April 3 via Cleopatra Records.Because you expressed interest in Carmine for his last album I wanted to reach out to you directly and see if you might be interested in covering him again? It’s been two years since Cactus first unbarred the doors to the Temple Of Blues, a 15-track slab of headbanging, hip swinging heavy blues rock whose subtitle, ‘Influences And Friends,’ roped in a host of special guests, all of whom held the band very close to their hearts. Now the Temple opens again, this time for an all-star aggregation that recalls Ted Nugent, Billy Sheehan, Bumblefoot, Dee Snider and Pat Travers from volume one, alongside an all-new wave of heavy hitters including Steve Morse (Deep Purple), Tracii Guns (L.A. Guns), Joe Lynn Turner (Rainbow, Deep Purple), Rudy Sarzo (Ozzy Osbourne, Quiet Riot), Alex Skolnick (Testament), and a whole lot more! The original Cactus grew out of Appice’s past experiences with Vanilla Fudge and Beck Bogart and Appice, debuting in 1970 with a self-titled album and an immediate impact on the live circuit. And Temple Of Blues II takes us back to their birth. That summer, Cactus were among the main attractions at the Isle of Wight Festival in England, and the new album’s “Purple Haze” reunites them with both another of that bill’s audience favorites, Melanie, and its overall headliner, Jimi Hendrix.Elsewhere on this thunderous sequel, Pat Travers returns for the mighty “Moanin’ At Midnight,” Joe Lynn Turner joins Morse, Carmine’s Guitar Zeus bandmate Tony Franklin and Derek Sherinian (Dream Theater) for “Bad Stuff,” Dee Snider (Twisted Sister) and Tracii Guns (L.A. Guns) lead the way for “The Little Red Rooster,” and Ted Nugent and Bob Daisley (Rainbow) join forces for an astonishing “Spoonful.”But every track here expands the raw blues rock vision of volume one with even more fire, swagger, and authority. And Carmine, of course, anchors the proceedings with his unmistakable power, groove, and feel, driving every track and reaffirming his status as one of the most influential drummers in rock history.
