Info:
Founded in October, 2014; three of the four founding members were already playing together in the death metal act Natron. The new project was created in order to focus on classic heavy metal with progressive and doom influences, thus employing a different vocalist as the last band member.Do you miss the genuine powerful thrust of the classic heavy rock, the prog edge and the fresh savagery of early proto heavy metal bands of the 70’s when yet the term heavy metal was forged but not widely used and abused as in the years to come?Well if you do, then your wish is fulfilled by the groovy blend of The Ossuary sound:a mix of Sabbathian riffs, gloomy Pentagram moods, melodic Thin Lizzy/Wishbone Ash/early Iron Maiden guitar leads, Captain Beyond prog passages and epic leaks ala Rainbow. The band formed in Bari, Southern Italy in late october 2014 and in 2 years they recorded a couple of promos which managed to attract the attention of some underground labels and fans of heavy rock and doom.
Album:
Italy is an ossuary of doom metal. Throughout the years bands such as Black Hole, Death SS, Paul Chain, and Abysmal Grief have filled the crypts with their traditional tomes of gloom and epic incantations to all manner of deities across the ages. On the grand scale of things Italian doom has unfortunately stayed relatively underground – it is a tomb bursting at the seams, awaiting to erupt and take over the world. And joining this horde are the aptly named The Ossuary: forged in the dungeons in 2014, the world is about to get a taste of their brand of traditional doom metal with their debut Post Mortem Blues, which will see this four piece accepted amongst the masters of the genre. The Ossuary effortlessly blend ‘70s hard rock and early ‘80s NWOBHM with traditional doom metal a la Pentagram and all eras of Black Sabbath, however this is not your run-of-the-mill imitation band. The music on Post Mortem Blues sounds really fresh and, given the group’s predecessors on the Italian scene, certainly fits right in; they don’t even need to try hard. And this is exactly what sets them apart from their contemporaries: knowing their musical heritage, The Ossuary twist all their influences to their own advantage, creating a heavy and dark sound that, whilst being by no means original, comes off as current. It is an album rich in underground textures, crushing drum patterns, glorious riffs and the most majestic solos so far this year. This is great death rock to be jamming to. From start to finish Post Mortem Blues knocks out heavenly lick after heavenly lick whilst retaining an evil underground vibe: the balance between heavy and soaring is matched incredibly well; from the smoky doom riffs of opener ‘Black Curse’ to the funky title track, everything sounds natural and organic and generally kick ass! The evil yet epic heaviness of ‘Evil Churns’ and weighty depths of ‘Graves Underwater’ is definitely where the band shine, but songs like ‘The Crowning Stone’ where the crooning vocals of main-man Stefano ‘Stiv’ Fiore glisten over the clean guitars show off their softer side. Across the whole of the record Stiv’s vocals, a mix of Dio and Tony Martin at their lowest, shine through, matched only by those very ‘80s solos seen in, for example, ‘The Great Beyond’ – it is enough to make any denim-clad flag bearer of the true underground bow their heads in praise.Post Mortem Blues is an impressive debut by a band etching their way into an already rich tapestry. They certainly aren’t rewriting the rule book or blazing a trail here but they offer more than a strong nod to appreciating the music that has moulded heavy metal up to this point whilst adding their own flare for gloom to the mix. This is an album for those who like it heavy with a penchant for the majestic doom that the genre forefathers were known for. The Italians know how to make good music with the haziest of sounds, from deep within the crypt, and The Ossuary continue this tradition proudly.
