Bio:

Canadian AOR band which released two albums: “Affairs In Babylon” (1985.) and “Burning From The Inside Out” (1987.REFUGEE, the brainchild of canadian songwriter / vocalist Myles Hunter, released "Affairs In Babylon" in 1985 after an initial indie release under the moniker MICHAEL FURY.Drummer from this band Brian J. Doerner, from Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, is a former drummer of progressive rock band Saga, and hard rock band My Wicked Twin with his twin brother Brent Doerner. Brian has been playing music together with his brother since they were 8 years old.Brent was given a drum kit by their parents, which Brian took from him. Brian has been playing drums since that time.Brian Doerner also has a longstanding history with the Canadian rock band Helix, joining them twice.Brian has been recognized as "one of Canada's top drummers.Myles Hunter (ex Avalon Canada), bassist Martyn Jones and guitarist Rob Kennedy founded MICHAEL FURY (named after a character in James Joyce's short story, "The Dead") in 1979.They did the predictable round of club gigs throughout Canada until split up in 1983.Hunter met keyboard wiz Howard Helm (ex Zon) one year later and start to play with him the songs he has been written. Together decided to call Kennedy and Jones back, and with the addition of drummer Dave Mihal reform MICHAEL FURY.An initial demo was picked up by a local small label and the result is "Affairs In Babylon", released in 1984.MICHAEL FURY toured constantly throughout the country, but they began getting an identity crisis as people mistook the group name 'Michael Fury' for Myles Hunter himself. To compound matters the label tried to push the band as a solo act. This didn't sit well to the group (Hunter included), then a major US label offers a deal to the band and they bought back the rights to the album and signed a new contract. The disc was re-mixed and re-recorded for the most part, and modified with new songs, "Affairs In Babylon" was re-issued under the band name REFUGEE, with new drummer Brian Doerner (Helix). As REFUGEE, Hunter & Co. released another album in 1987; "Burning From The Inside Out". Both REFUGEE releases are considered classic '80s AOR gems by the fans of the genre (totally agree). But let's talk about the MICHAEL FURY album. For the re-release of "Affairs In Babylon" under the Refugee moniker, 5 tracks were replaced by 5 new ones, and what a new songs!, the best they ever recorded in my opinion, the album is far superior, with an updated remix job and the new tracks getting big production. A classic indeed.

Album:

This album was a side project of Brian Doerner (better known as the drummer for the groups Saga, and Helix). It has some nice tracks, such as the "Body To Body," "Listen To Your Heart," and "Thunder Of Another Night."Originally known as Michael Fury (don?t look for that name in the line-up), these Canadians released their first album while being in the process of changing some band members. Ex-Zon keyboard player and singer Howard Helm and ex-Helix drummer Brian Doerner joined founder members Myles Hunter, Rob Kennedy and Marty Jones and this creative quintet soon caught the attention of Chrysalis Records in New York. The original ?Michael Fury? album was reworked and some new tracks were added. The result was called ?Affairs In Babylon? (1985) and the band name was changed to Refugee. Preceded by the single ?Exiles In The Dark? the band went on tour in Canada and the US and the reception was great, especially on the East Coast of Canada. Howard Helm: ?As the keyboard player for Refugee I immensely enjoyed the times of the first album. Whenever I listen to any of the live Refugee recordings (of which some are released now for the first time!), the passion and energy jumps out of the speakers at you. I hope all who listen to this recording feel some of that vitality and strength that made Refugee one of the great Canadian bands of the eighties.? Refugee was indeed one of the better Canadian bands of that decade and went on to produce a second album ? ?Burning From The Inside Out? ? for Polydor Records. Hope MTM Classix will release that one soon as well. In the meantime you and I can finally enjoy a copy of ?Affairs In Babylon? on CD, featuring no less than 5 (good quality) bonus tracks, of which 2 studio tracks and 3 live tracks, including a pleasant cover version of ?Mighty Quinn?. Recommended for all fans of Canadian AOR from the 80s. I?m (already) burning from the inside out?

Album:

When MTM Music re-released Refugee?s debut album, "Affairs In Babylon", in 2005 (as part of their MTM Classix? series), a lot of people - including yours truly - hoped a re-release of the band?s second album would soon follow. Well, MTM Music is no longer, but Mario Lehmann is now running NL Distribution and the good news is that he has just re-released ?Burning From The Inside Out?.To cut a long story short, this ?BFTIO? is the best of Refugees two albums. The overall quality of the songs is better and the performances are fingerlickin? good, with stellar guitar parts from Rob Kennedy and equally impressive keyboars from Howard Helm. Count to that the excellent vocals of Myles Hunter and nothing can go wrong. Filled with 9 songs full of catchy hooks and harmony vocals, it?s a pleasure listening to this album from start to finish. My favourite songs include opener "Survival In The Western World", "Love Survives","Power" and "American Dream".Originally produced by Pat Glasser and released in 1987, it feels great to finally have a digitally remastered re-issue of this gem in my collection.

Line Up:

Myles Hunter - vocals, guitar
Rob Kennedy - lead guitars, vocals
Martyn Jones - bass, vocals
Howard Helm - keyboards, vocals
Brian Doerner - drums

Tracklist:

01. Survival In The Western World
02. The Beauty Of Pain
03. Love Survives
04. Lay Me Down
05. Burning From The Inside Out
06. Power
07. American Dream
08. Keep The Lion In The Cage
09. Violence
