Ohrenfeindt is a German rock band from Hamburg-St. Pauli, formed in 1994.Since 1994, they push the pedal to the metal: Ohrenfeindt's guitars are flying low. Small, smoky clubs are their habitat - and so are big stages.Meanwhile, the three-piece has been playing on most of the important biker events in the German language area and gathering a community of faithful fans. They have been playing with Munich metal heads Megaherz, New York blues legend POPA CHUBBY, down under rockers Doomfoxx and Rose Tattoo as well as Nazareth from Scotland and the North German legend Torfrock.Next to AC/DC, the latter belong to their rock'n'roll gods as well as Social Distortion, Herman Brood, Johnny Cash or Stoppok. Harp, fat guitars, a more than tight rhythm section and a raspy voice - this is the simple formula for their full throttle rock, hard as a bone and going directly to your stomach, your legs, and maybe your head, too.Hence, their biker anthem "Harley-luja" is the only song sung in German that has made it on the 100 years Harley Davidson CD sampler (next to big names such as Doro, Judas Priest, and UFO).They stand for talking loud and clear, and whatever they have to say, they say it in German. Their songs are telling stories written by life itself: tales about love, about falling down and standing up, about rock, roll, and silicon breasts. There's got to be a silver lining on the horizon, right?
Album:
The St. Paulianer Ohrfeindt has been around for over a quarter of a century and with "Das Geld Liegt Auf Der Strasse" their 9th studio album will be released at the end of October. And where does a real rock 'n' roll album fit better, if not in St. Pauli. So earthy and honest rock 'n' roll can nowhere be better set to music.So that you can hear that on the album, the guys made sure of that by recording the disc more or less live in the studio and, as always, choosing themes for the lyrics that life writes.The album is bursting with guitar riffs à la AC / DC performed in the best rock 'n' roll fashion, which the veterans of the genre could not do better themselves. The drums create the typical groove that takes you along and immediately encourages you to rock along. The bass is not in the foreground, as is typical for the genre, but it is useful for the song and the blues touch is easy to spot. The latter very nice e.g. in "I Take Care of It". But there is not only groove and driving rhythms to be heard, beautiful melody lines are also presented. Very good to see in "Do you want to go with me".The hoarse, rough and snotty voice of Chris fits in perfectly with the genre and makes the songs even more intense and earthy. You can really imagine sitting at the bar with the guys and hissing a beer while chatting, as they say in Hamburg.A nice comparison that the album will work really well live is shown by "So Not", which was recorded live in Hamburg's Grünspan for the band's 25th anniversary.At the end of the disc there is a ballad called "Lullaby" in memory of a friend who died shortly before the recordings. A sad and beautiful piece, which Chris performs very emotionally and soulfully. A perfect end to the album.As already mentioned, the songs, at least the basics, were recorded live in the studio, which is what you can hear on the record. The production is kept slightly rough, as is typical of the genre, and lets the "dirty" rock 'n' roll charm come into its own.Conclusion:"Das Geld Liegt Auf Der Strasse" is a very strong hard rock / rock 'n' roll album, which honestly and earthy grooves through the local system. Everything was done right here. For me the strongest album in the band's history and the rock 'n' roll highlight of 2020! Put the part on the shelf, preferably on vinyl, because that's where it belongs!
