Bio:

It seems like the biography of the band MACBETH, founded back in 1985 in Erfurt, was written by the English poet and playwright William Shakespeare himself.Like in the drama, where the band was named after, also glory and tragedy both can be found. In the early Eighties MACBETH were one of the first metal bands in the former GDR and toured like crazy. The hundreds of fans who followed them were soon a problem for the GDR-authorities and led to massive problems. In the fall of 1986 a show of the band in the overcrowded “Stadtgarten” in Erfurt was monitored by the police and Stasi and the band was finally banned in the whole GDR. The ban of any further live shows was decided directly by the highest government officials. The campaign against MACBETH only ended when the GDR stopped existing and Germany was reunited. But that wasn’t the end of the band’s tragedy. In December 1989 singer Detlef Wittenburg hung himself in the forest near Erfurt, broken by the traumatic experiences during his time in jail in the GDR. The band spilt afterwards. After the comeback in 1993, drummer Rico Sauermann committed suicide. The end of MACBETH seemed to have come and the band split again.More than a decade passed until MACBETH was back on stage. With old and new written songs the band supported IN EXTREMO and gained lots of new fans. There were only old cassette tapes of the band available at that time, but MACBETH finally delivered their first album “MACBETH” in 2006 which gained a very positive feedback. The songs of MACBETH tell unholy, demonic and insane stories and offer you a journey into the depths of human soul.Götz Kühnemund wrote in the RockHard magazine: “Dark and mighty straight metal following no trends… Macbeth sound real, honest and reliable and you can hear their long experience on tracks like “Abendmahl” – respect!” In 2008 it was time for some changes: Two new members joined with Alexander Kopp (g) and Patrick W. Engel (dr) giving the quintet new power and the attitude to really go for it! The feedback after the first show with the new line-up supporting Eisregen was terrific! A new demo CD was released in the same year, which offered a new sound of the band. The new material was massive, variable and almost completely different to the material of the 2006 album. In February 2009 MACBETH signed with Massacre Records who released the new album “GOTTESKRIEGER” in July 2009. The feedback on the album was way better than for the debut. Götz Kühnemund of the RockHard magazine stated: “Deep, heavy and well performed metal with raw, thrashy vocals and true, perfectly fitting German lyrics is to be found on “GOTTESKRIEGER”, without having the band following the paths of Rammstein and the Onkelz. The songwriting is better than from 95 % of the other German speaking bands”.In early 2010 there was another change in the line-up - Simon Mengs replaced Patrick W. Engel on the drums, who was short of time due to his work as a music producer. In 2010 the band won the W:O:A. Metal Masters competition and were awarded with a show on the world’s biggest metal festival in Wacken. The band once proved again their growing status.MACBETH are going to release their new and third album „Wiedergänger“ in September, which was once again produced by MACBETH’s former drummer Patrick W. Engel.

Album:

Welcome friends of good taste - to the presentation of the "thought guard (s)". You may be wondering, how do I get a good taste in music? The explanation for this is relatively simple: If you didn't have it, you would hardly be interested in my review of the fifth studio album by the East German metal institution MACBETH. The best thing to do is to play with open cards and out in advance as a tough fanboy of the five. With their opus "revenant" published in 2012, the Thuringians even managed the best German-language album of all time for my taste. So it's no wonder that Christmas and Easter fell on one day for me when "Thought Guard" finally hit my computer. Interestingly, I would also like to add that it is generally extremely difficult for me to listen to German-language titles, because with the exception of a few bands such as SUBWAY TO SALLY, these mostly sound relatively flat and striking in my ears. The war poetry, which again makes up a large part of this album, doesn't really suit my personal taste at all, but MACBETH's sophisticated lyrics always succeed in captivating me with their morbid spell in an impressive way. When I first led "Thought Guardian" to headphones loudly, something like excitement was spreading, because their predecessor album "Imperium" could not quite keep up with the usual class and was therefore only a "good MACBETH-" Album ". The reasons for this were on the one hand a somewhat undifferentiated production, which I still bother about a little today, and on the other hand the lyrics, which make up an important trademark of the MACBETH sound, unfortunately did not quite get that usual class. So, enough of the long preface and off to the new album. Fortunately, "Denkwächter" is exactly the album that I had hoped for and was also provided with an excellent cover artwork by Artem Demura. The renewed production by Patrick W. Engel (also produced "Imperium") bangs and presses this time without end and underlines both the musical and textual brutality and brutality of the quintet. Almost frighteningly quiet and very leisurely, 'Friedenstaube' heralds the album before a bombshell out of the blue knows how to dismantle everything in rubble and ashes and harsh thrash metal sounds from the MACBETH brand resound from the speakers in hurricane strength. The combination of heavy metal paired with thrash metal borrowings and crazy guitar playing again represents the basic musical framework of the album. In addition, there is the expressive vocals of Oliver Hippauf, which forms a symbiosis with the dark musical gravity that surrounds the album .The lyrics, which never sound too wanted, mostly deal with religious fanaticism, war horrors, propaganda and the as yet unpredictable consequences for mankind. For me, the seven-minute 'witch hammer' stands out musically and lyrically, which was refined with goosebumps-provoking, choral singing and screams from burning witches. The content is about a work by the theologian Heinrich Kramer from 1486, which was then considered a crime code and was used to legitimize the persecution of witches. 'Daskalogiannis' is not only another title on the Rundling, but also the name of the leader of an uprising by the Greek population of the island of Crete against Ottoman rule in the 18th century. Since you won't find any average or even weak titles among the ten compositions on the Rundling despite a closer look with binoculars, I can confidently speak of an absolutely successful album with classic potential.MACBETH succeeds with "thought guards" of our society in an extremely impressive way to provide a warning mirror of real human atrocities. However, if you risk even a shy look at current world events, at least in the majority of human thinking, nothing seems to change, unfortunately.
