Bio:

Formed in 1992 under the name Disgorged, HEAVENWOOD quickly established themselves as one of the most important Portuguese bands, alongside of Moonspell.HEAVENWOOD signed to Massacre Records and released two albums in the late half of the 1990’s. «Diva» and «Swallow» sold more than 40.000 copies worldwide and put HEAVENWOOD in successful European tours with bands such as Atrocity, In Flames, Theatre Of Tragedy and Lake Of Tears. In 1998, high on the track of their «Swallow» album (which featured guest appearances by Gamma Ray mastermind Kai Hansen and – at the time – Theatre Of Tragedy front lady Liv Kristine), HEAVENWOOD was the first Portuguese band EVER to play in Wacken Open Air. After that, more tours with bands such as Atrocity, Solitude Aeturnus and Savior Machine, but the band quickly folded in a sea of internal problems and line-up changes... until 2008. Then HEAVENWOOD returned ready to break hearts again with their third full-length album «Redemption» released on Recital Records(Independent Portuguese Label)!«Redemption» was recorded in USStudios, Braga, Portugal and mixed & mastered by Jens Bogren (Opeth, Soilwork, Amon Amarth) at Fascination Street Studios, in Sweden. The album features all melodic and catchy HEAVENWOOD trades plus a new energy and experience. The recording is still rounded by special guest appearances (Ozzy Osbourne/ Firewind’s Gus G, Oceans Of Sadness’ Tijs Vanneste and Annihilator’s Jeff Waters) who not only underline but also sublime HEAVENWOOD’s trademark of Gothic and Dark Metal. On March 2011, HEAVENWOOD released its fourth album, entitled "Abyss Masterpiece" via Listenable Records. The CD was mixed and mastered by producer Kristian "Kohle" Kohlmannslehner (CREMATORY, AGATHODAIMON,BENIGHTED) at Kohlekeller Studios in Germany. "Abyss Masterpiece " was recorded again at USStudios. Editing was completed at 213 Studio in Oporto, Portugal. The album artwork was created by Matthew Vickerstaff of Darkwave Art, who has previously worked with CRADLE OF FILTH, MY DYING BRIDE, among others).

Album:

I love Portugal, even before visiting its capital, Lisbon, in 2009 and got instantly charmed by the mix of melancholy, rich culture and dramatic yet poetic air that lurks behind every corner of this Lusitanian city. Really this is not a surprise, because this mysterious ‘1000-and-1-nights’-laden country was in constantly interacting for more than four centuries with Arab population and their Eastern culture (among them some of the greatest mathematician minds of all time), so in a way it’s impossible for this movement to not have influenced every expression of Portuguese life, including Art. And that’s what happens in Portugal’s heavy music too; from dark to Gothic to Doom Metal, that sweet melancholy has passed through every note the Portuguese craft, and this is one of the reason I love their music so much, too. Oporto’s HEAVENWOOD belong to this category, since their sound is enhanced with dark yet aggressive infusions that are impossible to resist, so the coming of their fifth full length, titled “The Tarot Of The Bohemians”, was big news for my world, so it didn’t take much to press instantly the ‘order now’ button. And I’m so glad I did! “The Tarot Of The Bohemians” seems like picking things up where 2011’s “Abyss Masterpiece” stopped, hitting hard with that gorgeous amalgam of Gothic / Dark Metal that these Portuguese know how to create, only this time the sonic result sounds more grandiose orchestration-wise, reminding me a bit the latest works of bands like SEPTICFLESH where such arrangements take over the room. From the album opener “The Juggler” (that has the HEAVENWOOD moniker written all over it) till the ethereal Hard rocker “The Hanged Man” (thanks to Sandra Oliveira’s female touch), the album is filled up with truly addictive tunes with choruses that instantly get stuck, and with a lyrical theme that’s focused on the Tarot cards and the studies on them, conducted by the Spanish-born French physician and hypnotist Papus (1865-1916), adding a more dark and mystical note. Tracks like “The High Priestess” and “The Empress” will stick with you for days (I really like the way the guitars compliment the clean vocals and the overall old-school Gothic-style setting), while orchestral moments on tracks like “The Emperor”, “The Pope” and “The Chariot” beautifully reveal the grandiose SEPTICFLESH-like orchestration I was talking about earlier. Make a note to revisit “The Lovers” over and over again to enjoy its addictive chorus on a high volume, while “The Hermit”, placed on the right position of the tracklist, will take you through the sands of time using HEAVENWOOD’s mystical portal, where the epic touch of Fadi Al Shami’s vocalisms and the Eastern guitar-riffage make all the difference.“The Tarot Of The Bohemians” is an incredibly homogenous album with massive yet melodic tracks that serve totally their role on the album’s concept, so make sure that you’ll listen to it without any interruption. Looks like HEAVENWOOD did it again and offer us a high-quality album, especially for whoever thinks that aggression and melody can work side by side and create miracles. ‘Cause this is what “The Tarot Of The Bohemians” is all about.

For fans of Paradise Lost, Sentenced, Edge Of Sanity, Amorphis A whole decade after their last album, Portuguese gothic/dark metal pioneers HEAVENWOOD announce the release of their highly-anticipated new record, “The Tarot Of The Bohemians – Part II”, set for worldwide release via Mighty Music on LP, CD and digital formats. Marking the second and final chapter of the conceptual work inspired by the hermetic writings of Gérard Encausse (Papus), the album was recorded at Lucky Cat Studio (Portugal) and mixed and mastered at Vamacara Studios (France) by acclaimed producer Niko HK Krauss (Loudblast, Sirenia), elevating the band’s sound to new levels of sophistication and intensity.A whole decade after their last album, Portuguese gothic/dark metal pioneers HEAVENWOOD announce the release of their highly-anticipated new record, “The Tarot Of The Bohemians – Part II”, set for worldwide release via Mighty Music on LP, CD and digital formats. Marking the second and final chapter of the conceptual work inspired by the hermetic writings of Gérard Encausse (Papus), the album was recorded at Lucky Cat Studio (Portugal) and mixed and mastered at Vamacara Studios (France) by acclaimed producer Niko HK Krauss (Loudblast, Sirenia), elevating the band’s sound to new levels of sophistication and intensity.“Every work has its own story, and this new album goes far beyond being merely a concept and a continuation of the first part released in 2016”, composer, founder, guitarist and singer Ricardo Dias dos Santos comments. “Against all odds that arose in 2022 - after a near-fatal accident and imperative changes that led to a number of irreversible decisions - the conclusion of “The Tarot Of The Bohemians” finally sees the light of day, continuing a legacy that has endured for more than 30 years”.The album is further enhanced by impeccable and symbolic visual artwork created by renowned artist Naya Kotko, whose evocative imagery perfectly reflects the esoteric depth and spiritual duality that define this new chapter. With this “Part II” of the concept started with “The Tarot Of The Bohemians” (Massacre Records) in 2016, Heavenwood dive even deeper into the esoteric and emotional dimensions of the Tarot. This album represents both continuity and transformation - it carries Heavenwood melancholic DNA, but it also pushes the band into a more cinematic, intense and contemporary sonic realm.“The Tarot Of The Bohemians – Part II” signals a bold new creative chapter for Ricardo Dias dos Santos. The first glimpse into this renewed cycle came with the digital single “Death”, which laid the conceptual and atmospheric foundations for the new opus. With a career spanning over three decades, Heavenwood have long stood as one of Portugal’s most respected Metal exports. Since their seminal debut “Diva” (1996, Massacre Records) - the first album by a Portuguese Metal band to be released in Japan - the band has shared stages with international heavyweights such as Cradle of Filth, In Flames, Amorphis and Portugal’s own Moonspell, while also performing at prestigious events including Wacken Open Air.Throughout their evolution - from “Swallow” (1998) to “Redemption” (2008) and “Abyss Masterpiece” (2011) - Heavenwood have continuously refined their signature blend of gothic atmosphere, dark metal weight and introspective lyricism. Now, under the visionary leadership of Ricardo Dias dos Santos, the band closes the 22 Major Arcana Tarot cycle with what promises to be their most ambitious and emotionally resonant work to date.Date of release 12 June 2026.
