Bio:
Stockholm Showdown was born in the summer of 2001 when me (Rosen-Bass/Voc.) and Stefan (Lead Voc/Guit.) meet in Stockholm City, we hadn´t seen each other since way back in New York City when we where playin´together in Princess Pang. We´ve always connected well when writing songs together, back in these days we wrote most of the songs. I wasn´t worried about the songwriting we´ve always had loads of ideas for songs , I was more worried about the feeling of playing together again and to get the “right people” with us...saying Rozen.Me and Ronnie decided to give it a shot again. After demo-ing songs for a couple of months we had to get some great musicians for the band. Drummer was no problem, Trunk (Drummer) popped up in our minds right away. He´s a great drummer and a long lost friend of ours. When it came to down to lead-guitarist it was a little tougher… After we´ve been auditioning like 15 guitarplayers Trunk said he knows an studio-musician that we can try out.Only one album in discography "Last Call To Paradise" (2002).Stockholm Showdown’s “Last Call To Paradise” is an excellent album with a touch of early 70’s rock and a pinch of glam. This is pretty straight forward rock and the songs are well written. Overall one of the better records I’ve heard for a while.Rozen Johansson and Sterta Byrstedt take care of the composition on this album and they’re good at it. The frosting on the cake here was Slim Tannberg’s guitar solos. This man really catches your attention from the very first time and I quite enjoyed his performance. The band has a fine rhythm section and altogether this is a darn good rock album. My personal favorites on this album were “No Compromise” and the opener “Wont Mind You Leaving” which sets the pace for the whole album. No fillers on this album, just rock solid performance from the beginning till the end. I hope to catch this band live some day because I got a feeling that this would work well in front of a crowd.
Album:
A rare album.Despite having roots in the earliest incarnations of Princess Pang, the debut album from Stockholm Showdown is a much more mature effort. The band features ex-PRINCESS PANG members Stefan “Sterta” Byrstedt (vocals, guitar) and Ronnie “Roze” Johansson (bass, vocals). Stefan and Ronnie both have a passion for composition and make a great song-writing team, they complement each other perfectly. From the first day we wrote a song together I knew this was going to work out great says Ronnie. The guys have been writing songs together since the mid 80´s and the Princess Pang track ‘South Stree Kids’ appears on the new Metal Blade 20th Anniversary boxed set. Ronnie, Stefan and Peter played together in the original Princess Pang but parted ways in 1988 due to a family tragedy that struck Stefan. Gone is the slickly produced pop metal, exchanged in favor of a more soulful hard rock sound. The band at times comes across as a combination of Cheap Trick and Dogs D’amour, with a dash of the London Quireboys for good measure. Vocalist Stefan Sterta Byrstedt has a gritty voice similar to that of Rod Stewart (before he started crooning lounge tunes). The music is mid-tempo hard rock, complete with killer guitar solos and a killer rhythm section, a sound that would have easily found a place on radio playlists of the early seventies. A touch of punk is added into the mix, but not enough to make the songs boring and one-dimensional.The disc kicks off with the exceptional “Wont You Mind Me Leavin'”, which is reminiscent of Cherry Street‘s “Deuces Wild”–complete with it’s laid back vocal approach and dueling guitars. Although the record never gets better then the first track, it doesn’t let the listener down either. The bass rhythms are always rolling, and the guitar sound crisp and clean. The disc is mostly mid-tempo, but if your looking for a ballad you will have a hard time finding one,‘Bout A Thing Or Two” coming closest. The real pleasure of the album though is the fact that even if a song doesn’t grab your attention, the catchy and sing-a-long choruses will be sure to, case in point “Moonlight Avenue.” The lyric “I may take a chance, but I won’t sell my soul” pretty well sums up this album. The members of Stockholm Sweden have broadened their horizons without spewing forth the usual commercial drivel, choosing instead to sacrifice fame for musical integrity. Last Call To Paradise is an entertaining listen and worth the price of admission.
