Bio:

Currently working on their yet to be named first full length album for release in early 2016, Rival stays true to form in keeping all the work internal and complete all aspects of the album themselves. Everything from tracking and engineering to producing and mastering Mike, Matt, Jeremy and Adam are doing it all!Recording started in January of 2015 and they are now in the final stages. Full of impressive dual lead guitar work and a thunderously solid rhythm section Rival has 10 brand new tracks on their way to you. Each song more exciting than the last while maintaining a uniqueness from each other to keep the listener engaged from start to finish. The lyrics are inspired by the desire to tell a good story, whether it be from personal experiences, films, myths or historical legends. The guys are amped for this release! It is sure going to make its mark in 2016.Rival began in October 2013 when Jeremy Helten and Michael Chretien met. Mike was searching for band members who didn't want to be contained to rock, pop, metal, jazz and all those "categories". Jeremy had just moved to Montreal from Vancouver, BC with the intention of starting a band and getting involved in the Montreal music scene. Mike happened to be searching the internet and came across Jeremy's posting for a band .. BAM! Michael saw what Jeremy had to offer, sent a response and the two set up a jam.Around the same time Matt Baker was starting a new job, which just so happened to be where Michael was working. Through a mutual friend Mike heard that "Matt is a really good guitar player, you two should jam?" Not one week after their first meeting Mike and Jeremy were jamming with Matt and that's the moment Rival manifested. October 25th 2013 is a date they'll remember. Renting a jam space for a few hours in downtown Montreal. while Mike got his drums set up, Jeremy and Matt jammed together and that is where our sound started. The harmonies, the blues trade offs and their abilities to read each other's next movements was awe inspiring. Add Mike's spice of drumming and the jamming lasted for 3 straight hours. That day Mike, Matt and Jeremy agreed that this was a group worth making and they started working tirelessly together ever since.Over the next 7 months the three of them wrote in their monthly rented jam space while working jobs and Jeremy was busking in the Montreal Metros. Songs like 4 Shots Later, Never Been Sicker, Freedom were all written within the first month or so. From there the three went on a tear writing 12 songs by the beginning of summer 2014. Rival I was then pegged to be recorded. The decision to complete the album themselves in their jam space was ambitious, though it was the obvious choice since Mike and Jeremy had some background in audio engineering. They undertook the Recording, mixing, and mastering of the album. They also designed the artwork for the CD's and shirts. As the recording was winding up, the obvious next step was to get some shows. But they still lacked a bass player.During the writing process Rival played with a couple of bass players but at that point no one matched their drive and dedication. As the continued to search Mike asked a friend, Jamie Dyuns who had played in a previous project together. Jamie agreed and in August 2014, Rival had their first complete line up of Baker, Helten, Chretien and Dyuns. Rival debuted October 25th 2014 at Crobar. That show was captured on video and turned out to be a very successful show for us. From October 2014 to June 2015, Rival played 9 shows and were enthusiastically received by their listeners. It was around June of 2015 that the wheels began to wobble a bit. Already a Father of two with third on the way all while trying to balance personal responsibilities and Rivals demanding rehearsal schedule the band reached a decision to relieve Jamie of his bass playing duties. After this Matt Mike and Jeremy kept the momentum going on the recording and started the search for a new Bass player.Enter Adam Nigro. Adam and Jeremy are cousins that grew up together in a very musical family. Both played in Avalero, a band they started with two other cousins when they were 16. In the summer of 2015 Adam was touring Canada as the bass player for Janette King with their final show dates in Montreal. Upon learning that Adam had decided to stay and live in Montreal indefinitely, Jeremy asked if he'd be interested in joining Rival. After one jam with the band the answer was a resounding 'yes!' and Jeremy Matt and Mike knew they had found the guy they needed. It didn’t take long for Adam to get up to speed and now Rival is stronger than ever! With a couple exciting showcases coming up and the release of the new album Rival is on an upwards trajectory that’s sure to be exciting to witness. With their drive, dedication, talent and engaged songwriting Rival has just begun to impress.
