GOTHIC was established in 1992 by Alin Petrut in the heart of the Carpathian Mountains of Transilvania, Romania, becoming in a short period of time one of the most respected metal bands in Romania.Having played in over 400 gigs so far, Gothic is a real metal force onstage, playing almost in all the occasions in full-house clubs in Romania.Their debut album (Touch Of Eternity - 1998 Bestial Rec) was one of the best selling albums of the romanian metal stage back in the 90`s, songs like `Anguish`,`Memorial Winter`or`Regrets`turning into real metal hymns. Metal Hammer granted a 9 (out of 10) reviewing this album.Alin Petrut moved the band in Belgium between 2000-2004,and along with belgian members released the second album `In Blood We Trust`in 2004 at Painkiller Rec. The album was released under the name Innerfire, because another band with the name `Gothic`existed in France at the time, and Painkiller rec. didn`t want any confusions.Being expeled from Belgium due to his illegal situation Alin Petrut reformed the band Gothic in Romania in 2005. To this occassion the anniversary autoproduced album `12 Years Of True Metal`was released.Between 2005-2011 the band extensively toured Eastern Europe, but the unfortunate line-up changes prevented the recording of a new album. Having a stable line-up in 2011, the band entered Consonance Studio from Timisoara, Romania to record the album `Expect The Worst`.In 17th may 2012 the band won the finals of the romanian national contest for WACKEN METAL BATTLE, that being the second time the band arrived in the finals of this important event.In 2013 the band finally released their 3rd studio album `Expect the worst` which had great reviews, including Metal Hammer, Hard Rock Magazine, etc. The band got out the album in a self-produced manner and is presently looking for a label.In the autumn of 2015 the band entered the studio to record their new album, which is now in the final mixing stage and will be released through Loud Rage Music, a romanian metal label.Over the years the band shared the stage with names like : Manowar, Dimmu Borgir, Europe, Korpiklaani, Misanthrope, Gojira, Napalm Death, Decapitated, among many many others..Their music can be defined as a good combination of death metal with darker elements, all with excellent powerful guitar riffs. Loud rhythmic riffs are used mostly, and they are essential to add heaviness to the music because mere speed is not enough. There are three types of vocals. A death-metal one, a screaming type closer to black metal one, and a third one, more melodical. All of this gives a good combination of dark brutal vibes. The sound is concentrated especially on the guitars, which is essential to manifestate all the power of the band...A hard working band, a new album fully recorded, waiting to be released and a slot at Wacken Open Air, the future of GOTHIC is looking very promising !

Into the darkened depths of ambiguity, things come into place, a sort of inner calmness right before a massive storm that is about to rage. From the coldness of the Transylvanian winter, I was acquainted with the melancholic Gothic / Death Metal band GOTHIC, certainly one of the oldest Metal bands in Romania, formed back in the early 90s. Sadly that not too many Romanian bands actually made an impact on the worldwide scene, yet no one is giving up just yet. GOTHIC, through their career, were able to support some of the bigger acts in Metal while also performing in the Wacken Metal Battle as Romania’s representative. This year, under Loud Rage Music, the band released their brand new album “Demons”, a token of brutal heaviness bearing their deep dramatic aura of their wayward ways.As I started listening to the first track of the album, immediately I could notice the signatures of the German long running modern Gothic Metal machine, CREMATORY, minus the keyboards. However, GOTHIC also share a rather impressive technical skill. Not exactly what I could refer as progressive or overly artistic technical sense, yet, being riff based in general, they try to come up with compositions and arrangements that are slightly more challenging. As a rhythm guitar fan, I was witness to some of the heaviest examples of this subgenre, no doubt bone crushing headbangers. In addition, “Demons” also shares melodies, whether through the combinations of clean vocals with the low end growls, or within the lines of the guitar playing. Along the line there were several ample soloing bursts, yet not as I would have liked. In return, the band added a few Synth sections, an element that attributed to the Industrial effect on some of the songs.Since the band have been trying to produce their music as a bit more articulate, it is evident that the band’s songwriting would be accordingly. Each song has its own identity, ascertaining a kind of diversity that is quite good. “Catacombs” appears to be a big chunk of drama that includes greatly written melodies, destructive grooves and fine piece of soloing. Honestly, this number has to be listened more than once, it won’t sit on your lips immediately, its music would do the talking. “From Within” displays a riff based chugger with conviction, well composed melodies and guitar harmonies. I think the overall mix damaged a little the effect of those melodies, paving the road to a much stronger rhythm guitar riffs, and it goes hand in hand with the band’s wishes, yet not too overwhelming. “A New End” turned out to be a song in Romanian, pretty neat, displaying a melancholic Alternative direction within the band’s Gothic Metal perception, might as well be one of the band’s hits to rely more public support. “Demons”, the wicked self-titled, is a melodic Industrial generator, developed into a heavyweight modern Death Metal, one of the better songs of this release.Can’t really say that I expected much from these guys, but I am glad that my journey with their release went in a positive note. These veterans should have been high up the Metal ladder, maybe they can still do it.
