Bio:

Meet one the most promising rising stars of Japan’s female metal scene, Lovebites. The band consist of, Asami (lead singer), Miho (the band leader and the bassist), Haruna (drummer), Midori (guitarist) and Mi-Ya (guitar and keyboards). The Lovebites sound owes a debt to the many great overseas heavy metal bands that have directly influenced their writing. Coupled with their own unique take on music, with each members eclectic background and experiences, everything has culminated into forging a truly formidable group. It all started with a break-up of a girl’s metal band. Miho, who played as a live member in several bands after the break up, decided to form a new band. She called up her old band mate and the ex-drummer of Destrose, Haruna, to put together a new metal band in 2015. Miho and Haruna already had a huge following within the girls’ metal scene do this news spread quickly and created great excitement among many fans.Miho and Haruna started their search for band members and fate led them to meet Asami, the lead singer of Lovebites. She was already an experienced singer, having been on the road with Japan’s top stars such as Vamps and Uverworld as their back-up vocalist. Also her wide vocal range and tremendous control, helped to determine the specific Lovebites sound – a deep heavy metal sonic structure with dynamic crystal clear vocals. In 2016, Midori, the former guitarist of Gekijo★METALicche, joined the band as a full member, as well as Mi-Ya, (ex-a Drop Of Joker and the guitarist of 21g) as a supporting member. Having the powerful twin guitars of these two distinguished and outstanding guitarists was the cherry on top, and so Lovebites was born.On November 18, 2016, Lovebites made their official live debut at “Women’s Power presents Girls Band Next Generation” at Tsutaya O-West in Shibuya, Tokyo, sharing the stage with Disqualia and Mai Yashima.Lovebites started working on their first EP at the end of 2016, joined by amazing an engineering team of Mikko Karmila and Mika Jussila from Finland who are known for their work with Nightwish, Children Of Bodom and Amorphis to name a few. The Lovebite EP was the culmination of those sessions, released in mid-2017. In August, Mi-ya became a full member of Lovebites and, as a full 5 member group, they released their first full album, Awakening From Abyss, in October 2017.

Album:

Female power metal band LOVEBITES haven’t taken long to make their mark on the heavy metal scene. It’s been less than a year since their official live debut in Japan, and only a few months since the release of their debut EP, The LOVEBITES EP, in Japan, the UK and Europe. They’ve grabbed the attention of metal fans and musicians around the world, and now the quintet, made up of singer Asami, bass guitarist Miho, drummer Haruna, guitarist Midori, and guitar and keyboardist Mi-ya, are back with an even bigger, louder release: Awakening from Abyss. Are you ready? Because we certainly are.The band draws inspiration from their love of international heavy metal bands like Iron Maiden when making music, and in this new release it’s certainly paid off. You can feel the raw, powerful energy of their songs from the get-go, The Awakening starts out as a soothing first track, for example, building anticipation for what’s to come with soft guitars before jumping head-first into an explosive instrumental second-half that puts Midori and Mi-ya’s shredding skills on full display. The Hammer of Wrath is a strong song to follow, reminiscent of classic metal the song sees Asami’s powerful vocals dominate as the band thrash it out alongside her. It’s a commanding track, and it will most certainly get stuck in your head long after it’s finished.Shadowmaker is also a belter of a song. Opening with an intense cacophony of guitars and drums, it’s one of the album’s best tracks thanks to Haruna’s double-peddled beats, Miho’s fast-paced bass lines, and the intense guitar battle between Midori and Mi-ya. Going from one to the other, the showdown between the two guitarists is especially fun and features a relentlessly catchy tune that makes the song a definite highlight. Mi-ya is a new addition to the band but her skillful guitar playing and song writing (she’s the one behind Shadowmaker) has clearly confirmed how important she is to the band.Liar is another epic song on the album, starting out in a soothing ballad style, Asami’s sweet vocals soon leads on to the cheerful tones of Midori, Mi-ya, Miho and Haruna’s instruments. It’s one of the album’s more comforting tracks but it easily resonates with us, so we hope it does with you too. Burden of Time also features a catchy chorus and intense guitar solos, it’s moving lyrics making it a stunning track. The album also features the four songs on the band’s debut EP, so if you are a fan of those power metal songs then you’re in for a treat with the rest — this is one metal album that you don’t want to miss.

Album:

Lovebites are headed for the big leagues – and if this is the first time you’ve heard of them, keep that name in mind. You’ll be hearing it much more often in the future.Despite forming fairly recently, Lovebites have already managed to attract a passionate social media fanbase on the back of their debut album Awakening From Abyss. As an all-female Japanese metal act, Lovebites might seem like prime targets for Babymetal comparisons and backhanded sexist comments like “you play really well…for a girl”. But since Lovebites individually proved their instrumental chops through pre-band session work and other projects – and Babymetal are clearly a very different proposition, being a band of dancing vocalists backed up by a band of metalheads – gender-related considerations can be easily swept aside. If a group of guys could play this well, they wouldn’t hear comments like “yeah, you’ve got some chops…for a man”.They’ve also levelled up significantly on Battle Against Damnation. First track The Crusade pays its respects to Dragonforce, using finely-tuned guitar harmonies and plenty of sick pinch harmonics – and it is far more solid, aggressive, and generally heavy than Lovebites have been up to this point. Vocalist Asami even opens up some serious vibrato while belting out line after line, and when the guitar solo hits…well, fuck. Pretty much every trick in the book gets unleashed there, pushing the whole track over the top while demanding you return for a repeat performance.Moodier thrasher Break The Wall proves that Lovebites are no one-trick ponies, packed as it is with tight riffs and, yes, still more stunning shredding. One Metallica- and Queen-influenced bridge later, begging for the full S&M orchestra treatment, and Lovebites return to full-tilt thrash, charging to the end and pausing before Above The Black Sea begins.Time for yet another stylistic direction change, as Lovebites draw on the likes of Yngwie Malmsteen and symphonic metallers Nightwish. While most metal bands are happy to take one sound and milk it for all it’s worth, Lovebites consistently keep things fresh and engaging. Under The Red Sky throws everything that’s come before into a blender, then sticks the power on full. A true progressive voyage running close to six minutes, it’s an all-encompassing display of straight-up virtuosity. These four tracks are superior to entire swathes of metal albums from the present day and decades past. Leave any gender issues aside; Lovebites have rendered them irrelevant anyway. In metal, all that matters is whether or not you can get the job done – and this band absolutely can. Now, about that second album…

Album:

Japan's Lovebites will release their new album, Electric Pentagram, in January. A music video for the first single, "When Destinies Align", can be seen below.Britain's JPU Records will issue the title on CD on January 31.There's nothing more satisfying than shutting people up. With their first two albums, and a whole bunch of acclaimed live shows, LOVEBITES swiftly proved that the fact they are an all-woman group that collectively weigh slightly less than one of Chuck Billy's forearms is, thank the metal gods, the least interesting or impressive thing about them. You'll notice it again when "Thunder Vengeance" erupts at the start of "Electric Pentagram": this band absolutely fucking rip and, amusingly, they also make a lot of all-male power metal bands sound a bit lily-livered and feeble.LOVEBITES will continue to win metalheads over because they consistently nail the strongest and grittiest aspects of traditional and power metal, and seem to be incapable of writing a bad song. "Holy War" is glorious: part symphonic melodrama, part old-school shred-up. "Golden Destination" is HELLOWEEN on steroids, with some of the most blistering lead work you'll hear in 2020 and a delicious AOR sheen. "Raise Some Hell" is a turbocharged cock rock stomp with a thrash 'n' roll heart. "When Destines Align" is state-of-the-art speed metal with a wickedly overwrought chorus worthy of PAT BENATAR or BONNIE TYLER. "Frozen Serenade" is LOVEBITES' most joyfully epic moment to date; a change of pace that allows vocalist Asami to shine even more than she does on the rest of these fervently melodic tunes. Her powerhouse vibrato is one of the band's not-so-secret weapons, and it's her presence that makes "Electric Pentagram" such a distinctive record in an absurdly crowded marketplace. On the closing "Swan Song", she nearly blows the roof off with a none-more-classic Euro-metal chorus, embellished with harmonies of effortless brilliance. If there's any criticism to be levelled here, it's that "Electric Pentagram" is probably a song or two too long. No one really needs a 70-minute metal record, unless it's by OPETH or TOOL (and even then you might skip the bongo jams), and even fewer people will actually listen to the whole thing at this point. But don't listen to a miserable middle-aged white man railing against the modern age. Listen to LOVEBITES and pay your respects to one of the most punishing and powerful melodic metal bands on the planet.

Album:

Tokyo’s LOVEBITES must be heavy metal’s hardest working band. Since their inception in 2016 they’ve released three albums, two EP’s and a four-track single and, with no signs of slowing down, they’ve just unleashed their second double live album Five Of A Kind. The sound of a thunderous cloudburst and some sublime synths create a palpable tension, an air of expectation that hangs heavy that is finally broken when the band arrive and launch into Thunder Vengeance. It immediately finds the band in fine fettle and firing on all cylinders with Asami’s vocals sounding both deeper and warmer in the live environment. More thunderclaps and lightning strikes herald the coming of Holy War which arrives like a division of Sherman tanks rolling from speaker to speaker. Despite the band’s virtuosity, the songs on Five Of A Kind aren’t mere facsimiles with the mid-song breakdown on Holy War being markedly different from that which appears on Electric Pentagram and it’s such deviations which make live albums so special. You can almost feel the waves of affection that radiate between band and crowd as LOVEBITES return to their genesis with a spirited rendition of Don’t Bite The Dust. Barely pausing for breath Rising follows and a capacity audience requires little goading to sing along and Rising injects a nice change of pace which ensures Five Of A Kind ebbs and flows perfectly. LOVEBITES have a pair of guitarists in Midori and Miyako who can rival Iron Maiden’s Dave Murray and Adrian Smith and they trade some blistering solos on the aptly titled Raise Some Hell. Providing a moment of calm Miyako sits at the piano to deliver Chopin’s Etude Op.10, No.12 which segues into the heavy and ethereal Swan Song as Miyako returns to the piano to bookend the song in tinkling keys. The sublime Dancing With The Devil opens Disc 2 and finds the band opting for a slower tempo with bassist Miho and drummer Haruna locking in tightly to deliver a heavy, groove-laden number. Its pedal back to the metal for the lively pairing of Signs Of Deliverance and M.D.O. before Golden Destination appears like stampeding horses with its triple time gallop. The Awakening riles up the crowd and sets the stage nicely for the all-out thrasher that is The Hammer Of Wrath. Asami and a piano introduce Edge Of The World and hold the crowd spellbound, so much so that you can almost hear a pin drop which makes the coming storm even more volatile. We The United, interlaced with classical guitar lines, is the suitably epic closer and brings down the curtain to rapturous applause.Recorded at Zepp DiverCity on 21st February, Five Of A Kind – Live In Tokyo 2020 finds LOVEBITES in their natural environment and it’s an album that should become a cornerstone of the genre alongside Kiss’ Alive, Maiden’s Live After Death and UFO’s Strangers In The Night.

The four-track beacon of heavy metal hope was recorded under the darkness of the coronavirus pandemic. All four tracks will be exclusive to the EP and will not feature on or be rerecorded for future albums, like 2018 EP BATTLE AGAINST DAMNATION.On creating the EP the band comments, "On one hand, working on this album during the spread of coronavirus has been mentally draining. On the other, the music created in such darkness has managed to become full of feelings of salvation and light. This body of work is full of a positive power unlike anything else in the history of LOVEBITES".GLORY, GLORY, TO THE WORLD follows critically acclaimed album ELECTRIC PENTAGRAM, which made its debut on Japan's Oricon Album chart at number nine. It also follows news that the band has sold out its 2021 national tour, and that new song 'Winds of Transylvania' will be the theme song to the anime VLADLOVE from visionary directors Mamoru Oshii and Junji Nishimura (Ghost in the Shell, Urusei Yatsura).

Album:

Lovebites is a band that as everyone can figure out, I have been a fan of from the very beginning. I keep being certain that the band cannot improve any further. Every time I think the band has hit their apex, they come out with a new release that screams "you think this is the end?", also to be honest, around the 5th album or 10 years into a career, most bands decide to start coasting with what they know. That is clearly not the case with Lovebites. This is the longest the band has gone since releasing any studio material, with the last EP being released close to 18 months ago, was the wait worth it?I had my trepidations that this album was going to be worth talking about because The Castaway while a good song, didn't blow me away. The next track, however, Silence the Void hit me like a boxing glove with its clean and crisp riffs from Miyako and Midori and Asami singing with her usual style and elegance. There's no doubt this album is meant to be a grower, but what else it is happens to be a showcase for the band itself. Many of the complaints of previous albums have clearly been solved."The album is too long and too relentless" -- okay, this album is six minutes shorter than Electric Pentagram and has a bunch of mid-tempo bangers like Blazing Halo with its fun, bouncy bass and funky soul-sounding guitar work that is both complicated and powerful at the same time, the drumming is meticulous and for the first true song by the band that was under 4 minutes, they figured it out really well. Another great mid-tempo gem is Phoenix Rises Again, it's a upbeat, high-energy song but doesn't sound like it's trying to crush you with riffs, instead it wants you to realize the energetic motif and fist pump along with it. The drumming is well kept, and the bass is more accented, clearly Fami gets her chance to shine, and shine she does."The band doesn't know when to slow down" -- then we have a ballad like Eternally, the first real power ballad since Epilogue off Clockwork Immortality. It's calm, it gives the album time to breathe and gives the listener a rest right before smacking them back in the face with One Will Remain. The band clearly wanted to experiment with different textures and feels and they certainly did."The songs all sound the same" -- I dare you to say that after listening to Reaper's Lullaby. Haruna talked about eventually wanting to see if she could cross the 300BPM threshold, this song at 240BPM is definitely practice for that. It's up in the speed range of blackened thrash or melodic death metal, and indeed they borrowed from that as an inspiration with the tremolo riffs blazing through the song, but also the vibe. It's clearly a thrashy power metal song with its precision drumming, riff-driven harmonies and beats and clean vocals but something about it feels more Scandinavian, the darker tone, the continuous forward momentum of the song, and everything. When people say "I know what to expect from Lovebites" this song fires back "Oh really?"This album clocks in at just over 64 minutes and that's long enough that you can replay it 10, 15, 20 times or more and hear new and exciring things every time you listen, but what's most impressive is that after all this time, Lovebites is not trying to chase trends, they're trying to set them. They're trying constantly to better themselves as a band (the Japanese call that "Kaizen" or "continuous improvement") and at this rate, my biggest fear will be what happens when the band runs out of letters. We can only hope that by then, the legacy they leave will rival that of the greats, because anyone who listens to them can agree, they belong with those greats.
