Bio:

Seduce is an American hair heavy metal/glam sleaze band formed in Detroit, Michigan in 1980.They are best known for their appearance in Penelope Spheeris’ cult music documentary film The Decline of Western Civilization Part II: The Metal Years.Seduce was formed in 1980 when Mark Andrews and David Black, initially playing in a band called Sparks, met Chuck Burns through mutual friends. "Mark and I jammed through a few things and put the first version of Seduce together, then Chuck came along later," Black remembers. The band released their self-titled debut album in 1985. Seduce performed their songs "Colleen" and "Crash Landing" in the music documentary film The Decline of Western Civilization Part II: The Metal Years and released their second album, Too Much Ain't Enough, in 1988.Seduce performed with Accept, Saxon, Girlschool, Iggy Pop, and Vinnie Vincent Invasion around this time. After issues with their record label and lineup changes in the band, Seduce broke up in 1991. The members would go on to play in other bands such as Speedball, the Skeemin' Nogoods, Universal Temple of Divine Power, Heresy, Crud, the Shakey Jakes, and Negative Approach. Seduce reformed in 2002 and has been consistently performing one-off reunion shows since then.Seduce's musical style has been described as heavy metal and hard rock. Some of the bands that Seduce was influenced by include Motörhead, Van Halen, Alice Cooper, Discharge, the New York Dolls, the Sweet, and Led Zeppelin.

Album:

The remastered debut album by Seduce an American hair metal/glam sleaze hard rock band issued through Mingya Records in 2002.Originally released only on vinyl in 1985, it was reissued on CD in 2002 with bonus tracks. Though a three-piece band, they produce a surprisingly full-bodied sound; their sleazy style leans toward traditional metal, perhaps reminiscent of bands like RODS. It’s a classic 80s sleazy metal album filled with tight, cool tracks that evoke the influence of KISS and Mötley Crüe. Since the term “sleazy” and the genre itself didn’t exist back then, I imagine it was simply categorized as metal at the time. I think it’s a sound that NWOBHM fans can definitely enjoy as well. This 2002 CD is already somewhat hard to find, perhaps because the initial print run was small. Since reissues from 2000 onward and tracks released on CD for the first time haven’t been pressed in large quantities either, prices can skyrocket quickly if you’re not careful, turning them into expensive rarities. Seduce formed in Detroit in the early part of the 1980’s playing initially a style of music quite ballsy, heavy, and pretty confrontational (Sword, Armored Saint, Axtion spring to mind, before somewhat altering their style in a more commercial capacity for their later career. This band is a completely forgotten act that should be held in higher regard by both USPM fans, and the more mainstream-inclined London type fans. This debut effort should have garnered more sales and success for the band, and while the big time seemed to loom for a time (the band appearing on Decline of Western Civilisation II, along with other up and comers Odin, Vyper and bigger acts like Lizzy Borden), things just didn’t quite pan out for Seduce, and their legacy is a couple of decent full lengths. The band certainly seem young and hungry on this album – tempos are fast, drums are heavy and driving, riffs are heavy, and themes are energetic, and full of youthful exhuberance. ‘Headbangers’ is a case in point. The band has a more metallic sound than the LA sound they would later come to absorb somewhat in their next offering. Before prolonged exposure to the sunset strip bands and the like, Seduce seemed determine to slay with what can be described as legitimate full-bore heavy metal – again Sword and Armored Saint spring to mind – even the vocal tone and raucous backup chants in this one remind me of Bush from ’Saint. There’s plenty of aggression and pace throughout the offering – not just a handful of songs. ‘Viper’s Bite’ has an aggressive yet glam tinged appeal, sounding somewhat like London or very early ’Crue, with a catchy, melodic, yet ballsy sound.A very strong, consistent, aggressive and exciting album from these Detroit lads here. With a drive for success, the band wasn’t willing to depart with their balls for the sake of a commercially acceptable album. This thing has metal written all over it, and is executed very well. Vocal performances by Johnny Roxx are on form, at times even tough, while some saucy licks and leads pepper this predominantly fast-paced record. Snarling attitude is rife, with ‘Love to Hate’ sounding like a ballsier, younger Motley Crue. Talent isn’t lacking, and the band manages to produce a debut that avoids sounding unrefined, or being inconsistent as well as not deserving to be so utterly forgotten in metal circles. If you enjoy bands like Vyper, Armored Saint, Hellion, Armed Force, The Rods, Lizzy Borden, Sword, you should enjoy this cool little offering by Seduce.

Some of the bands that Seduce was influenced by include Motörhead, Van Halen, Alice Cooper, Discharge, the New York Dolls, the Sweet, and Led Zeppelin.

Album:

Second and last full-length album. This is the second album by Seduce a three-piece hard rock band from the U.S. Although their debut album was released in 1985, it wasn’t reissued on CD until 2002. After this album, none of the members went on to do anything particularly notable (drummer Chuck Burns apparently played on just one album with Tracii Guns’ band). It’s a real shame, given the high quality of the music they left behind.Every band suffers a change in direction, correct? Well, that is, almost every band, suffers a change in direction. Metallica with their 1991 self-titled dung pile, Megadeth with their 1999 atrocity “Risk”, Iron Maiden with the less than up to par “Virtual XI”, and Celtic Frosts 1988 record “Cold Lake”, just to name a few. Out of those records, only Cold Lake (My personal introduction to CF) and Virtual XI are in my collection to this day. Risk and the black album have all been sold off for a dime a dozen. But, there is one album in the history of botched failures that has caught my eye and pulled me in. As a Detroiter, I found local metal band Seduce at an early age. After previewing their first, self-titled effort, I decided to move on to their second, not so well known recording, 1988’s “Too Much Ain’t Enough”. Let me tell you, it sure as hell does not sound like it came from Detroit.“Too Much” exhibits a sort of grittier glam/sleaze metal sound that came out of Los Angles at the time (circa 1988-1992). Sort of the dying moans of the wounded glam metal scene. Metal heads can go and strip me of my man card, but I enjoy the occasional glam/sleaze metal listen. But here is the catch. None of that Poison/Ratt pretty boy bull for me. I like the abrasive, bluesy stuff like Cinderella, Gangway (From Detroit) or Tesla. That is just the thing that this album satisfies. It is gritty, with a good balance of glam rock and ball kicking, full out metal. The contrast is like black and white on some songs. “Crash Landing” is full out speed metal, whereas the second track “Watching” is more of a blues rock piece, with fluid guitar fills and a moody, well, bluesy solo. The metalness varies from track to track. The opener, “Anytime Or Place” is more of a “glam-ish” number, with a dash of metalness thrown in for good measures. Another prime example is the final track “The Slider”, which is a downright sleazy blues number that was originally done by T-Rex. Coming off of tracks like “Empty Arms”, a slower metal number, or “Accusations”, a more speedier song, but not up to Seduce’s full speed, “The Slider” is a far cry from songs lie “Headbangers” or “Vipers Bite” off of their 1986 self-titled record. The title track is a dark, yet bluesy number, filled with fluid guitar solos which is guaranteed not to disappoint its listeners, even if they are beginning to lose all hope in this once fine band.Other tracks exhibit a sort of tired and worn out Seduce. Remember, at this time, David was suffering from a terrible heroin addiction that nearly tore the band apart. Internal tensions between Black and drummer Chuck Burns began to split, culminating in Burn's ousting in early 1989. Tracks like the dark social commentary "Watchin'" or "Been So Long" show a weakness in the band. A sort of lagging in the enthusiasm department make the tracks sounds worn and tired, showing the tensions in the band at this time. The 1988 film “The Decline Of Western Civilization Pt. II: The Metal Years” helped to put the final nail in the metaphorical coffin for Seduce. The whole metal scene was killed off with the swipe of a hand, and the help of a simple feature film. Seduce did not really survive. The entity was around, but I consider it “The David Black Show”, and not traditional Seduce.Seduce broke up in 1992, after many lineup changes, including the firing of drummer Chuck Burns and the addition of former Katmandu and The Meanies drummer Mike Alonzo, and former Paris and Gangway vocalist Angelo Ganos. This record went out of print in the early 1990’s, and most likely will never be rereleased, due to its poor sales upon original release in 1988. The critics have also bashed this album a hell of a lot in the 20-some years after its release. One reviewer on here even gave it an astounding 40 percent. I will have to give this album a full 100, due to its incredible musicianship and remarkably crystal clear production, which has its pros and cons. The pros mean that the drums, guitars and basses are all present and accounted for. The con is that Mark Andrews’ nasally, shrill voice pokes through a bit too much, giving me an often headache. I have always maintained the standing that Mark’s voice is similar to that of a caveman’s in some places. “Oof…ermm…ughh!!!” is what I expect to hear sometimes, then I forget that this is Seduce, not the damn Caveman power hour. That is nothing to knock off points for, though. After a few minutes, you become accustomed to the grunts and groans of Mr. Andrews’ voice. Overall, if you are a fan of a blues/metal mix, this is highly recommended for anyone.

Album:

With influences ranging from Van Halen to Motorhead, Led Zeppelin to Aerosmith, ’80s rockers SEDUCE music emanates an unrelenting energy. Hailing from Detroit, for many hard rock / metal aficionados Seduce were ten times better than the likes of Motley Crue or Twisted Sister.Seduces’ 1985 self-titled first LP became a highly sought after piece among the underground metal community and has never seen major worldwide distribution until Rouge Records finally reissued the album in 2018 with distribution through Sony Orchard.December of 2020 brings this reissue of the also much sought after Seduce’s 1988 second, cult classic record ”Too Much Ain’t Enough” (which features the bonus track “Homicide’) now completely remastered.More than 3 decades after this last recording, Seduce still have a strong hardcore cult following world wide whom asked for these reissues which are almost sold-out now. ”Too Much Ain’t Enough” is further evidence that many great kick ass bands from the ’80s like Seduce never hit it big – but deserved major exposure.

Album:

After the two reissue/remasters of ’80s albums by SEDUCE featured here a few days ago, some of you asked for a live document of the band, as reports from the era highlights this 3-piece as one of the hottest metal acts from the Midwestern area.Detroit’s SEDUCE was so popular there in the mid-Eighties that the band headlined the circuit venues, even over bands like Babylon A.D. or Bang Tango that later would enjoy better luck in the music business. After SEDUCE released their full length / self-titled debut LP, and by popular demand, FM radio station WLLZ agreed to broadcast the band’s full show live, the entire concert of 12 songs. Here’s in exclusive SEDUCE’s “Live in Detroit 1985“, a very good sounding recording of that event – this is heavy, raw, in your face US metal, no tricks, just kick ass pedal to the metal. Think W.A.S.P. at their heaviest.
