Bio:
Jon Ryan Schaffer (born March 15, 1968) is an American heavy metal musician. He is best known as the rhythm guitarist and last remaining original member of the Florida-based heavy metal band Iced Earth, which he formed in 1985 under the name "Purgatory". He also sings in his side project Sons of Liberty and played guitar for Demons and Wizards, his collaboration with Blind Guardian frontman Hansi Kürsch. Purgatory formed January 20,1985 with Jon on rhythm guitar and he also designed the bands logo. After personnel changes, and a name change, Iced Earth put out their fist self titled debut. On this first album, Jon seemed to be a jack of all trades. Not only did he play rhythm guitar and sing background vocals, he also co-produced as well, like he has on all Iced Earth albums.. Jon also sang lead vocals on the song Stormrider on their second album, Night of the Stormrider. Jon is a very talented person and has a particular knack for story telling. After a three year hiatus, Iced Earth came back with a brand new singer, Matt Barlow, and a heavier sound. They released Burnt Offerings in 1995 and The Dark Saga in 1996. Then in 1998 Jon's Something Wicked storyline emerges. Among the first of these albums was Something Wicked This Way Comes. . The album contained 3 songs based on the Something Wicked story line. The albums tell a very interesting story. I divided them into 3 parts. Here's the links to those blogs: Part 1 Iced Earth pt.1 , Iced Earth PT.2 Iced Earth pt.2 , Iced Earth PT.3 Iced Earth pt.3. John is most noted for playing Gibson Les Paul custom guitars and has a few that are really something special. Here's my favorite one he's using, a black custom with blue flames. Even though another personnel shift with Barlow leaving the band to become a police officer in Georgetown, Delaware and the recruitment of Tim "Ripper" Owens on vocals, Jon still held it all together. Jon was also the lead guitarist on Demons and Wizards self titled album as well as their album Touched by the Crimson King. Demons and Wizards was just a side project with Blind Guardian vocalist Hansi Kürsch. The two had met in the early 1990's when Iced Earth and Blind Guardian were on tour together.Their self titled debut was released in 2000. Jon formed Sons of Liberty in 2009, and is a band that is very political. The debut album, Brush-fires of the Mind, was released in December of 2009 as a kind of solo project. Jon sang, played guitar and programmed the drums. He also had a host of guest musicians who also appeared the follow-up EP, Spirit of the Times. This project came about upon learning what the Federal Reserve System is all about. I think that Jon Schaffer has been very involved and instrumental in the power metal movement in America. I say Jon Schaffer is America's King of Power Metal! Long live the King! The band would change their name to Iced Earth before releasing their fourth demo. The "Horror Show" demo was an idea that Jon Schaffer played with for many years, before re-using some of the song titles on the Iced Earth album of the same name (the songs themselves are completely different). Not to be confused with Purgatory from Cleveland, Ohio, or with the Death Metal band Purgatory from Moosup, CT, or with Purgatory or with the Thrash Metal band Purgatory from Texas.
Album:
Jon Schaffer returns with a powerful new chapter for Sons Of Liberty, unveiling Thought Crimes (Volumes 1 & 2) — a bold reimagining of one of the most uncompromising releases in modern heavy metal.Originally released as the Brush-fires of the Mind LP (2009) and the Spirit of the Times EP (2011), this definitive edition fuses both works into a unified statement, breathing new life into material whose message has only grown more relevant with time. The album is now available on all major streaming platforms, while a highly anticipated physical release arrives on July 4, 2026, via The Circle Music.Elevating the original recordings to new heights, Thought Crimes (Volumes 1 & 2) features newly recorded live drums by longtime collaborator Mark Prator, whose unmistakable groove powered classic releases by Iced Earth, Demons & Wizards, and Jon Schaffer’s Purgatory. A modern, muscular mix by legendary producer Jim Morris, paired with fresh mastering by BJ Ramone, delivers a sonic experience that is both raw and refined — organic, powerful, and unapologetically human. The physical editions are designed for collectors and longtime supporters, headlined by a limited double black vinyl LP housed in a gatefold jacket with an 8-page booklet, strictly limited to 500 copies. Additional formats include a deluxe leather box CD, a digipak CD, cassette editions, and special color vinyl variants, with an ultra-limited run available exclusively through the official Iced Earth store.Conceived not for profit but as a gift to be shared freely, Sons Of Liberty was always intended as a wake-up call — a challenge to unquestioned authority, a critique of systems built on coercion, and a rallying cry for individual liberty. Far from partisan politics, Thought Crimes (Volumes 1 & 2) stands as a universal message rooted in pro-freedom and pro-human values, urging listeners to think critically, question fear-driven narratives, and defend the principles that unite humanity. In an age where dissenting ideas are increasingly silenced, this release stands as one of the most censored and controversial heavy metal statements ever made. Its return is not only timely — it is necessary.
