The band is now based in Austin, Texas.Spirit Adrift started in 2015, in the immediate wake of multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Nate Garrett's newfound sobriety. The debut EP Behind - Beyond and first full-length album Chained to Oblivion were recorded in 2015 and released in February and October 2016, respectively.Because of demand for live performances, a full band was formed consisting of Marcus Bryant, Jeff Owens, and Chase Mason. The first Spirit Adrift show took place on May 15, 2017 at The Rebel Lounge in Phoenix, Arizona with Gatecreeper and Pallbearer.Shortly after, a split with Khemmis was released on War Crime Recordings. The split, entitled Fraught with Peril, features updated heavy metal versions of traditional Appalachian songs. Spirit Adrift reinterpret Man of Constant Sorrow on this release. On October 6, 2017, Spirit Adrift released their second full-length, Curse of Conception on 20 Buck Spin. The band embarked on North American tours in support of its release, including dates at Decibel Metal & Beer Fest, Migration Fest and Psycho Las Vegas.Curse of Conception received widespread critical acclaim, including landing the number two spot on Decibel's Best of 2017 list.On October 23, 2018, "Eyes Were Not Alive" was released as a single via the Decibel Flexi Series. On May 10, 2019, the band released their third full-length, Divided by Darkness, again on 20 Buck Spin.Leading up to the album's release, Revolver debuted the official music video for the song "Angel and Abyss".The North American tour in support of Divided by Darkness included dates at Northwest Terror Fest and Modified Ghost Fest.In late 2019, Eric Wagner replaced Jeff Owens on guitar. The band then embarked on a co-headlining tour of Europe with Sanhedrin, and appeared at Aftershock Festival in Sacramento. In early 2020, Garrett announced that Eric Wagner and Chase Mason would no longer be part of Spirit Adrift. In June 2020, the band surprise-released the Angel & Abyss Redux EP to raise money for the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. Then in August, they announced their new album Enlightened in Eternity, which was released on October 16 on 20 Buck Spin in North America, and Century Media in the rest of the world.Kerrang! ranks Spirit Adrift among the top ten American bands of the 2010s.

Album:

The loss of the CD single: I am not sure I ever got over it, I am not sure I’ll forgive the internet for it (it is, as previously stated, the official stance of this website that the internet is rubbish and everything was better before it’s existence).I love those things. Some of my all time favourite bands even saved their best songs for them. I even discovered bands through them back in the day (“Do Anything You Wanna Do” by Eddie And The Hotrods was an Almighty cut, and “Lazy Sunday Afternoon” by The Faces, I first heard on a Thunder single).Maybe this will do the same for Spirit Adrift fans. “20 Centuries Gone” is the sort of thing that in the late 90s, before Google ruined everything, that would have been Bonus Track material. Two new songs from MV’s favourite metal band of this decade (it might sound like a big call, but they are majestic and I am truly gutted I haven’t seen them live yet) would be good enough to get me salivating – and they are stunning. The first of them “Sorcerers Fate” is – according to the main man Nate Garrett – the genesis for the project, given its line about new and old aligning, but to me, like always, they’ve taken everything that’s cool in metal from Maiden, to Corrosion of Conformity, to Dream Theater and a pinch of thrash and distilled it into one track. It’s an incredible feat. The other new one is just as good, and perhaps a little more sprawling. The way they do things is like no one else, and the way the solo screeches, before the hook of “everything must die” and a closing riff that even adds a bit of Pantera (of which more…..) And it comes as no surprise that a band with that much going on has diverse influences, which is handy as there’s six covers here. The beauty of them all is that they sound like the originals, but being done by Spirit Adrift.“Everything Dies” by Type O Negative (a band I saw back in the day and don’t think I appreciated how lucky I was to do so) is genius. And they pay suitable homage to it before giving it a twist. They do that with all of them. “Hollow” from Pantera, is has the SA dust sprinkled over it liberally, before the ending slab is pure Dimebag, and the way they take on “Escape” by Metallica is equally impressive (and makes me wish I listened to Metallica more, in honesty). The three remaining ones are right in my ball park as three of my favourite bands. “Waiting For An Alibi” is simple proof that Thin Lizzy are the greatest hard rock band ever, and even here, with a little more metal in the mix, a little more meat to the chords, it’s still evident.I have to be honest, I maybe didn’t have Spirit Adrift as fellow travellers down the ZZ Top road, but “Nasty Dogs And Funky Kings” rather suggests otherwise, and even if they’ve added a little more fuzz to the guitar than the Rev Billy F Gibbons, then there’s no mistaking it. As there isn’t with “Poison Whiskey”. They’ve amped it up like CoC on “Deliverance” and they’ve chosen one of the bleakest songs in Skynyrd’s catalogue, but my, they’ve nailed it.Spirit Adrift nail everything they do. They are the best for a reason, indeed the only thing missing from this? Me parting with a couple of quid in 1998 to buy it as a four track cd single. Otherwise, bravo.

Album:

One of the main things that keeps heavy music afloat after all this time is the diehard's undiluted passion. Nate Garrett has been on a mission for a full decade now, leading SPIRIT ADRIFT from their low-key origins to their burgeoning status as one of the best and purest heavy metal bands on the planet. After the epic, doom-driven squall of the 2016 debut "Chained To Oblivion", Garrett has incrementally nudged his vision forward, and SPIRIT ADRIFT have become a much more distinctive beast in the process.Across three acclaimed LPs — "Curse Of Conception" (2017),"Divided By Darkness" (2019) and "Enlightened In Eternity" (2020) — the Texans have established a vibe that comes closer than most to invoking the power and glory of old-school heavy metal. Two subsequent EPs added to the legacy: "Forge Your Future" was a brilliant stopgap in 2021, while "20 Centuries Gone" emerged last year, offering covers of songs by METALLICA, PANTERA, ZZ TOP, and THIN LIZZY among others. Garrett has been building towards something big, and his songwriting has grown with each successive step. Throw in the formation of a brand-new lineup, featuring ex-CARCASS live guitarist Tom Draper, and the band's fifth album can hardly fail to be significant. How do you like your heavy metal? Epic and overblown, or gritty and soulful? It turns out that you really can have both. SPIRIT ADRIFT have reached a sublime peak of efficacy here. Opener "Give Her To The River" is steeped in '80s metal and the lissome rush of '70s rock, but the sum of those parts is neither nostalgic nor derivative. It's some trick to pull off. Classic sounding but gently ingenious riffs, a stirring vocal from Garrett, some blistering solos, and a structure that ebbs and flows across eight glorious minutes: this is almost magically timeless stuff, as relevant to 2023 as it would have been at any time over the last 50 years. And you may sense that SPIRIT ADRIFT know it too. These are all great songs, but it's an electrifying ensemble performance that seals the deal every time. The lengthy, shape-shifting instrumental section in "Give Her To The River" brings to mind mid-'80s MAIDEN, through sheer energy and melodic verve. In fact, the intro to "Barn Burner" has a certain "Wasted Years"-like charm to it, but even when they echo the greats, SPIRIT ADRIFT remain a wholly individual band. The rest of the song is pure dirt-metal nirvana, with smart vocal harmonies, a big chorus and bonus gnarly thrash riffing. Again, the instrumental section oozes natural authority.Garrett flips the speed metal switch for "Hanged Man's Revenge", which takes off at a snotty clip and keeps foot to floor until SPIRIT ADRIFT slip seamlessly into classic doom mode, with solos firing in from all angles and a woozy wash of stoned intent enshrouding the riffs. "These Two Hands" builds from a delicate, acoustic intro into a swaggering, bluesy affair, with flurries of twin-lead harmonies, before ending with another hazy hippie strum. In contrast, "Death Won't Stop Me" is straight-ahead, mid-paced and catchy as hell: a slight METALLICA influence evident in the riffs but underpinned by a rhythm section that really swings. "I Shall Return" is unapologetic in its debt to RANDY RHOADS — the opening riff will have OZZY fans salivating — but as it evolves, it becomes another miraculous hybrid of trad meta and psych-tinged '70s rock, with a chorus that becomes hypnotic as it cycles around. Similarly, "Siren Of The South" is a trippy waltz, with roots in the groovy slurry of early grunge, more of that rugged, thrash-influenced riffing and a melancholy, occult rock feel. Again, SPIRIT ADRIFT have whipped up great originality from the most familiar of ingredients. As with "Give Her To The River", the closing title track confirms the full extent of Garrett's ambition. Nine minutes long and almost overburdened with great riffs, it is both a masterful piece of (progressive) heavy metal songcraft, and a dazzling showcase for the current lineup. The somnambulant mid-section that pitches Garrett's elegant vocal against the ambient swell of ghostly guitars is simply beautiful, and perfectly sets up the arrival of yet another avalanche of guitars. This is heavy metal that you can bask in. Rich in detail, borne of great passion, and cognizant of the past but in no way bound by it. "Ghost At The Gallows" is a seriously brilliant piece of work and a righteous victory for one of the modern scene's most dogged diehards.

Album:

With the release of their sixth album, Infinite Illuminations, Spirit Adrift has announced their end as a band. It’s the sort of announcement that I can’t deny hits a personal point, having followed them since 2017’s Curse of Conception and my old band even opening for them in 2022. But at the same time, it’s understandable when looking at the band’s overall trajectory. Much in a way similar to Cathedral’s return to morbid, mournful doom on 2013’s The Last Spire, this album reflects similar intent in coming full circle. That sense of ending something as it began is demonstrated by the emphasis on cathartic epic doom. While Spirit Adrift had never fully abandoned those slower, rugged roots, the songs here are consistently glacial in a way that recalls The Gates of Slumber or Pale Divine on a song like “Buried In The Shadow Of The Cross.” Even when the tempo speeds up for a song like “White Death,” the faster rumble is closer to the crusty doom of Death Row-era Pentagram than Randy Rhoads worship. One can sense an emotional undercurrent as the guarded first half gradually opens up for a more determined back half. But acknowledging the cycle at play, the execution retains the experience that the band hed acquired along the way. The ear for atmosphere seen on 2023’s Ghost At The Gallows is retained here as the opening title track swells in with the lingering western vibes before fully descending to doom. One can also say that the band could never fully lose the fighting spirit that had gotten stronger over time as the ending one-two “I Am Sustained” and “Where Once There Was An Ocean” are masterfully executed exercises of outbursting doom metal. When so much of the discourse around a band’s farewell is focused on old guards determining when to finally quit, Spirit Adrift’s last installment caps off one of the most consistent discographies in modern doom metal. The band’s style has been tight enough over the last decade to make the shift back feel natural and the solid songwriting shows just how far they came in that time. Spirit Adrift may be gone but in light of bandleader Nate Garnett’s pending projects, there will be quite a bit to look back on.
