Bio:

The Electric Boys are a funk-rock metal band founded in Sweden in 1988, which enjoyed a cult status in Europe at the end of the decade. They were formed by Conny Bloom (real surname: Blomqvist) (guitar/vocals) and Andy Christell (bass). Originally a duo, they signed for Polygram and scored a local Swedish hit with the single "All Lips and Hips" in 1988, which according to some people is their best song so far. This early version of what would become perhaps the band's best-known hit also appeared that same year in America on the soundtrack to the movie Feds. The band then added second guitarist Franco Santunione and drummer Niklas Sigevall. In 1989, the band's debut album Funk-O-Metal Carpet Ride, including a revamped version of "All Lips and Hips" was a success in Europe, and they picked up a strong following in Britain, where, as well as headlining small clubs, they supported Thunder. When headlining Newcastle upon Tyne, Riverside club, the band were joined on stage by the lead singer of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Anthony Kiedis, who were performing in the same venue at around the same time. The following year, the album was released in America, where they also became moderately successful, thanks to the singles "All Lips and Hips" and "Psychedelic Eyes." However, the follow-up album Groovus Maximus did not emerge until 1992, by which time grunge had swept all before it and the album was overall inferior to the debut.[citation needed] By the end of an American tour to promote it supporting Mr. Big, the band had lost Santunione and Sigevall and both North American and European record deals. Outgoing members were replaced by former Mogg drummer Thomas Broman and Martin Thomander (second guitar) and this line up released the band's third album, Freewheelin' on the Music For Nations label in Britain. The album attracted little interest and the band dissolved. In 2005, founders Bloom and Christell joined Hanoi Rocks. The Groovus Maximus album was recorded at the Abbey Road Studios in London. There were two music videos made from that album: "Mary in the Mystery World" and "Dying to be Loved." The "Dying to be Loved" video only had a budget of £100.The band reformed in 2009 and released And Them Boys Done Swang in 2011.

Album:

“Funk-o-Metal Carpet Ride” is their full length debut album from 1989 – what a year – and for sure these guys brought something different to the table. This remastered reissue not only sound better and with more definition, it also includes as bonus many songs from the same sessions produced by talented Bob Rock, with same songwriting / production quality.Despite what its title implies, ”Funk-O-Metal Carpet Ride” isn’t funk/metal in a Red Hot Chili Peppers-like fashion — rather, the melodic yet aggressive band had more in common with Aerosmith’s intense boogie.Originally a duo, Conny Bloom (guitar/vocals) and Andy Christell (bass guitar) hit it big with the ultra catchy single “All Lips and Hips” in 1988.What happened next? Well, ATCO saw talent here and signed the band. Two more people were added to the line-up and the band’s debut album ”Funk-O-Metal Carpet Ride” was released 1989, with of course that “little” song “All Lips and Hips” leading the way.Combining an Aerosmith-influenced sense of fun with elements of ’80s sound, the Electric Boys made Carpet one of that year most memorable melodic hard rock releases. The distinctive Swedes enjoyed some moderate MTV exposure with their grinding hits “Psychedelic Eyes” and “All Lips and Hips” — both of which are among the highlights of this inspired record. The album is so much more than these songs, though. “If I Had a Cigar” is the song that finally explains why this album’s title says “Funk-O-Metal”. The groovy, alluring tune is one of the highlights of the CD. I love the choruses.Moving on to another great tune – “Rags to Riches”. Where do I even begin? There’s just something a bit aggressive in their approach to music and I simply love how they combined it with the desired melodic rock sound to create universal appeal…with a twist! This album rocks; there’s no ballads here. Actually, ”Funk-O-Metal Carpet Ride” is pure energy. The whole album is one huge invitation to party and basically a way to lift your spirits up. There’s no way you can resist it. Catchy, rockin’, melodic – what else can you ask for.Do I even have to say that they didn’t get what they deserved? Well, I’m going to say it – they didn’t get what they deserved. Electric Boys’ sound was unique for its era.Recorded and mixed at Soundtrade Studios in Stockholm, Sweden.

Album:

“We like guitar riffs, strong hooks and heavy grooves, performed on analog instruments. I guess you’d call it classic rock.” so says the opening line in the press release for the long awaited new album from Stockholm’s Electric Boys.I must first of all before I start this review, own up to a few things. First and foremost that I’m a fan of the band and have a copy (OK the three copies then) of their debut Swedish single as well as a few copies (OK maybe seven then) of the original Swedish release of their debut ‘Funk O Metal Carpet Ride’ I also believe that I have every format of every single they released either domestically, in the UK, US and Australia. But hey I’m a collector. I’ve also seen the band about a dozen times, mainly on their forays to the UK either headlining or with Thunder. But all that seems like rather a long time ago. After their glorious 1988 debut (or 1989 depending on where you were in the world) they released two further albums before taking an elongated break in 1994- ‘Groovus Maximum’ in 1992 and in 1994 ‘Freewheelin.” Neither album, if I’m honest, hit the heights of their debut (one of my favourite releases of the 80’s and therefore pretty high up there on the all time list) but both blew away 90% of the rubbish that Grunge foisted upon us.Resurfacing in 2009 they put out ‘And Them Boys Done Swang’ in 2011 a great album of which I said at the time:“This really is an album where you can take your pick! Every track is choice Grade A funked up Rock N Roll, driven by great riffs, kinda like early Aerosmith with bigger bass sound. There’s a heady mix of funk and psychedelic-driven rock in this store and it’s certainly the best since that debut.”Then there was 2014’s ‘Starflight United’ another great album. The question of course now is how do they sound a further 4 years down the track with ‘The Ghost Ward Diaries’ an album I signed up to the Pledge campaign for with a likely release date slated for November and which I have in my hot little hands now at the start of September.Opener and first single “Hangover In Hannover” starts with a timeless riff that could have been forged by AC/DC before Bloom’s vocal kicks in – it’s a song that does all that you’d hope the band would do – it’s fierce, it’s fiery, built on a driving melodic life-force, and a huge chorus and searing guitars that set it all alight. It’s pure Electric Boys.“There She Goes Again” that follows is even more melodic, even more monumental, with a sweet building chorus of Beatles-like proportions and insistent riff that gives you a huge smile before “You Spark My Heart” reaches out. It’s a melodic uplifting demi-ballad , sweet and crisp and invoking a real seventies rock feel that hits the mark. Now let’s get funky! “Love Is A Funny Feeling” is the first track that lays down what you might think of as that traditional Electric Boys funky beat, and does it with aplomb to really open up the party before “Gone Gone Gone” the first slower number here cuts in. It’s a stylish 70’s style sweet soulful grower of a song that wouldn’t be out of place on a vintage Bad Co album. The album is split down the middle by “Swampmotofrog” an funky little instrumental stomp that fits beautifully here and heralds the most back-to-basics song on the album: “First The Money, Then The Honey” – a groovy little rock and roller, simple and effective made to get the feet tapping and the blood pumping. That in turn gives way to a glorious closing trifecta heralded first by “Rich Man, Poor Man” one of my favourites here, which comes across with all the attitude of a funky little vintage Aerosmith rocker before “Knocked Out By Tyson” another breezy and funky number with a mild psychedelic bite kicks away the jambs and “One Of The Fallen Angels” closes the album with wailing guitar and a lighter sheen. It’s a great slab of ‘blue sky’ rock awash with melodies and a great riff that in days of yore would have heralded a stadium singing along at the chorus hit.“Lyric wise it’s a bit darker than before; little diaries from times on the road and the struggle in between.” says Connie, and whilst that comes across at times this is an album that delivers but which also pushes the boundaries just a little more than the other two reformation albums to date. The more I play this the more I love it.The first radio single and music video from the upcoming album, “Hangover In Hannover”, is due to be released in late September.

Line Up:

Guitarist/vocalist: Conny Bloom
Bassist: Andy Christell
Guitarist: Franco Santunione
Drummer: Niclas Sigevall
and new drummer: Jolle Atlagic (The Quill/Hanoi Rocks)

Tracklist:

01. Hangover In Hannover
02. There She Goes Again
03. You Spark My Heart
04. Love Is A Funny Feeling
05. Gone Gone Gone
06. Swampmotofrog
07. First The Money, Then The Honey
08. Rich Man, Poor Man

Album:

The Electric Boys are much loved for their idiosyncratic combination of hard rock and other forms of music such as funk beginning with their first album "Funk-O-Metal Carpet Ride" in 1989. In 2021 the band will release their seventh album "Upside Down", which continues and advances this fusion of music styles to make something of their very, very own.Recorded at Ghost Ward Studios like their successful previous album "The Ghost Ward Diaries" and co-produced with David Castillo, the album showcases the songwriting and performing talents of founder members Conny Bloom on guitar and vocals and Andy Christell on bass while also introducing Martin Thomander on guitar. Jolle Atlagic plays all the drums on the album, as the band's original drummer Niclas Sigevall - still very much part of the band - could not leave L.A. due to the pandemic. The album reflects the turbulent times of this year and spontaneously and organically formed into a concept album tackling adversity and fearmongering and championing the human fighting spirit and ability to transcend even the most difficult situations to find hope and victory over life's circumstances. As such the album taps into the collective consciousness of 2020, being contemporary while also drawing on a wide variety of influences such as Jimi Hendrix, Deep Purple, Bowie, 50s rock 'n' roll, late Beatles and even the Sisters Of Mercy. Probably less funky than some of the band's earlier material, it is no less eclectic and provides a potent cocktail reflecting the history of rock and roll and the light and darkness of existence."You can see the light at the end of the tunnel rather than simply the runaway train in songs like 'This Is Not The End'. When things are this big and seem out of control you can reverse it and gain control by letting it go", says Conny Bloom. The freethinking and rebellious spirit of the band is alive and well in this latest album and the belief in the power of the message of music and its ability to change the world.People commonly mention to the band that Electric Boys songs have changed their lives, inspiring them to take up instruments and how much the bands songs have meant to their fans. Known for his fine guitar work and languidly cool persona, Conny Bloom is also recognized for his work with Hanoi Rocks and Ginger in The Wildhearts. Andy Christell also joined Hanoi Rocks with Conny and with his distinctive top knot is the epitome of steady, bellbottom-fluttering rock bass.

Line Up:

Conny Bloom: guitar, vocals
Andy Christell: bass
“Slim” Martin Thomander: guitar
Niclas Sigevall: drums
Jolle Atlagic: drums

Tracklist:

01. Upside Down Theme
02. Super God

06. Globestrutter
07. The Dudes & The Dancers

Album:

Palma Music Studios, October 2022. The funky four from Sweden are spotted drinking margaritas and Estrella Damms during the sunny days but after siesta, they are layin' down the loud foundation of what will be the eighth Electric Boys album. "The pandemic inspired to some more serious subjects, so 'Ups!de Down', released in 2021, was a slightly darker album, even though hope was always present", says Conny Bloom, the band's main songsmith. "Grand Explosivos", the new Electric Boys album, to be released via Mighty Music is, however, quite the opposite. It might actually be that the boys are throwing the best party since "Groovus Maximus"! The album is a hard rockin', melodic, full of funk & fun adventure, which has become somewhat of the band's trademark sound. First single "I've Got A Feelin'" showed the way into the classic rock arenas while the follow-up "Domestic Blitz" kicks like a mule and won't take no prisoners. The boys are clearly enjoying playing together and we can look forward to one helluva party album at the end of the summer.

Album:

After the explosive energy of their 2023 album “Grand Explosivos”, Sweden’s groove-rock veterans ELECTRIC BOYS are back with a brand-new EP, “Shady Side Of Town”.Bursting with the same swagger, melody, and funk-driven hard rock that made them cult favorites, these songs were born during the “Grand Explosivos” sessions, but were simply too good to be left behind. Now, fully unleashed, they reveal another side of the Electric Boys’ timeless blend of attitude, rhythm, and rock ’n’ roll spirit.“During the recording of our latest album “Grand Explosivos” a lot of songs were written, but since we don’t like records being too long, all of them wouldn’t fit timewise”, the band comments. “In hindsight, we felt that these other tracks were too good not to be released, so here goes. Hope you dig ’em!”Formed in Stockholm in 1988, Electric Boys quickly made a name for themselves with their debut “Funk-O-Metal Carpet Ride”, produced by Bob Rock (Metallica, Mötley Crüe, The Cult), and the MTV hit “All Lips ’N’ Hips”. Blending 70s groove rock with 60s psychedelia and infectious pop hooks, the band became a unique voice in the rock scene. After classic releases like “Groovus Maximus” and “Freewheelin’”, the band briefly disbanded before reuniting in 2009. Since then, Electric Boys have delivered a series of acclaimed albums: “And Them Boys Done Swang”, “Starflight United”, “The Ghost Ward Diaries”, “Ups!de Down”, and most recently “Grand Explosivos”, proving that their signature funky hard rock is as vibrant, catchy, and joyfully rebellious as ever.“Shady Side Of Town” will be released digitally on 21.11.2025, via Mighty Music.
