Banshee is a metal band that was formed in 1986 in the American Midwest. Although they shared the image and sound with the glam/metal scene of the 80s, their music fully shares the elements of melodic power metal: catchy guitar riffs, eclectic drums and bass, powerful guitar solos, and intense vocals.Banshee, a melodic power metal band from the Midwest, was formed in the spring of 1986. Made up of members from the popular Mid-West touring act LICK (Tommy Lee & Chuck Hopkins), Terry Dunn of Kansas City-based FRODO, GRANMAX, and Kent Burnham from Kansas City-based CRYPT KEEPER. Parma from Dallas, Texas took the role of drums.In 2014, Bill Westfall returned as the band begins work on the follow up to Mindslave.Paul Berrian joined as their new drummer in late 2014.In 2015, Bill Westfall left Banshee to concentrate on Kansas City metal band, Death By Diesel.

Divebomb Records is releasing a 2-CD set including the two first cult albums "Race Against Time / Cry In The Night" by US hard rockers BANSHEE fully remastered plus a bonus track.Rising from the Midwestern hard rock scene of the mid-'80s, Banshee was a band that balanced traditional US metal and melodic hard rock with winning results. Featuring former members of such underground Kansas City groups as Granmax and Frodo, Banshee was fronted by Tommy Lee Flood, a vocalist that many have compared to Ronnie James Dio in his range and power, but also Don Dokken for his melodic waves.A few years after forming, Banshee self-released their "Cry In The Night" miniLP in 1986, selling so many copies independently that both Metal Blade and Atlantic Records courted the young act. Banshee ended up signing on with A&R legend Jason Flom at Atlantic Records, but not before licensing the miniLP to Metal Blade, in turn bringing international attention to the group.1989 found the quartet releasing their debut full length album,"Race Against Time", an 11-song collection that focused on their more melodic tendencies. Banshee began as a heavy metal band in Kansas City formed by Terry Dunn, Chuck Hopkins, Tommy Lee Flood, and Kent Burnham. Flood and Hopkins, formerly of Omaha, Nebraska’s premiere heavy metal band, Lick, contributed thunderous bass and Dio-esque vocals. Dunn from Kansas City based Frodo, provided scorching lead guitar reminiscent of the late Randy Rhoads and complemented Banshee with Kent Burnham’s rapid fire drumming.Banshee quickly became a nationwide name in the metal genre of the late 1980's with their EP entitled, “Cry in the Night” on Metal Blade Records. It was followed by the stellar “Race Against Time” LP, with Bill Westfall replacing Hopkins on bass. Banshee’s final known full-length was 1991’s ‘Take Em by Storm, and was released on their third record company, Snowblind, after the band was dropped by Atlantic, losing major record label support in the process. After the breakthrough power metal EP, the band took a marked shift in direction, heading further into hard rock territory; ballads, rock anthems, and bold, melodic choruses making use of simple riffs and huge backup vocals. Banshee often cops a bit of criticism for this, but I still feel this later stuff still kicks ass. While I am somewhat disappointed the band didn’t head down more of an aggressive power metal route, like Fifth Angel or other highly melodic, yet ballsy outfits, it can be said that present in their early work was a clear talent for crafting loud, shouty, ballsy anthems, that felt at least a pinch hard rock, and quite straight up heavy metal, with power metal credentials. This uncanny knack for churning out anthems seems to have taken more of an organic route, as opposed to pure “big label commercial pressure” or the bands own dreams of being the next Guns ‘N Roses. This type of music not only seems natural, and unforced from Banshee, but they often execute it with far greater prowess, technical proficiency and pure balls than the plebs.In ‘Running Wild’, not only in name, we edge somewhat into Judas Priest territory – crunching, aggressive guitar tones, and a touch of Rob Halfordishness coming through in some of the vocal chorus lines, particularly the banshee screams peppered throughout the thing, where octaves raise up to the stratosphere. This one is fairly simplistic, but rocks hard, and is a definite anthem. Yet again, and even with the year ticking over into 1990, Banshee shows off prowess at writing anthem after anthem, ousting the still lingering hair bands of the day, with their awkward fumblings on instruments and tired, played out teen love subject matters. ‘Stand Strong’ can be picked as yet another anthem, just by glancing at the name. This one features some decent enough riff sections, with some more of that simple bridge stuff that becomes common in the later Banshee offerings. The chorus feels a bit repetitive with “On and on, we stand strong…” but underneath that, are some pretty darn metal scaled riff type things being done, although you might not notice them; guitars can be less than conspicuous at times on the release. Either way, these are just two of the abundant number of rockin’ anthems present on the album. ‘Livin’ it Up’ is the kind of title that branded a thousand hard rock and heavy metal songs in the 80’s, but here, songwriting and vocal skills save the thing. Some nice production helps it along, too.While in tracks like ‘Memories’ we might be forgiven for thinking Banshee were trying a little hard to be the next Guns ‘N Roses, tracks like ‘Locked Inside’ with their heavy, Priest like riffing, and Iron Maidenish vocals, have considerable metal credentials. That, and a good 3 other decent anthems on this one, give the album some points, although it fails to produce anything that really matches moments on the previous EP and full-length. This isn’t their best effort, and it is arguably their most hard rock, but it’s still solid songwriting and musicianship, by an overlooked and underappreciated heavy/power metal outfit, that were on the verge of making it big in their heyday. I’d still recommend fans of the band to pick it up, and it’s a pleasurable listen, but I can’t help but ponder over what things could’ve been like if Banshee decided to keep their recipe 50/50 power: heavy metal, instead of successively diluting it with hard rock. Catchy, anthemic, but likely a little bit too hard rock for some.

Recorded on the return of Haley's Comet through Friday the thirteenth '85-'86.This absolutely phenomenal power metal EP was released in 1988, and instantly secured a top spot in my rotation upon my acquiring it. Excellent, heavy, and raucous right the way through, I was talking about this little gem with every opportunity to every metalhead I came across for months after hearing it. Banshee is yet another awesome USPM band in the vein of Hellion, Jag Panzer and the like. This is their debut release, and the remainder of their catalogue consists of two full-lengths.The EP’s opener, the anthemic and thundering ‘We Want You’ a a ravishing anthem showcasing some shouting vocals in the vein of a cleaner Armed Force. Lead vocals are strong, yet this isn’t the strong show you’ll be getting of them that you do in the Iron Maidenish next track, ‘Back Your Way’ another strong one with perhaps an even stronger and rougher chorus vocal. True quality. This one’s packed with screamish guitar solo action, and some strong vocal melody. The first two tracks are strongly ‘metallic’ with a slight departure being made to slower pace in the third. The fourth and fifth are excellent right the way through with ‘everything where it should be’ which pleases me as a genre fan. Banshee executes a distinct flavour of their own in particularly the 2nd and 4th and 5th tracks – definitely not ‘run of the mill’. The title track ‘Cry in the Night’ could be considered the highlight, but with strong material right the way through, it’s a little difficult to make that call.Overall a brilliantly strong EP - better than many I’ve heard in the last year, metal and otherwise. Four very strong tracks with a distinct USPM feel that really leaves you wanting more. Production values on this one are decent, with drums and bass mixed well. This band has a great name, and plays an awesome blend of mid 80’s metal. I thoroughly enjoy both the front a rear cover art, with a ‘spray-paint’ front graphic and ‘horror’ text song titles on the rear (Not to mention the awesome title of the EP itself. ‘Cry in the Night’ has everything you want in an 80’s metal title). These really add to the flavour and enjoyment in my books.

Banshee are a legendary US Power Metal band formed by guitarist Terry Dunn, who remains the main man behind the band to this day. The band was formed in 1986 and only a few months after they released their "Cry In the Night" EP, which was picked up by Metal Blade Records in 1988 for release. They also included the song "We Want You" on the Metal Massacre 9 compilation.By the end of '88 the band's popularity had become such that they gained the attention of Atlantic Records. "Race Against Time" was released on Atlantic Records in 1988. Unfortunately the band was lumped in with the hair metal bands at the time, despite the fact that they had a much tougher, heavy metal sound. It wasn't until 1992 that we were given new music from the band. They released their independent album "Take 'Em By Storm", with the band parting ways shortly after.The band got back together for reunion shows in 1999, 2000 and again in 2008. It wasn't until 2012 that the band released their fourth studio album Mindslave on Snowblind Records. The album featured vocalist George Call (ASKA, Violent Storm, Omen), original bassist Chuck Hopkins, and drummer Marty Schiermann. The album was a return to the heavier sound of "Cry in the Night." In fact, guitarist and songwriter Terry Dunn said that "Mindslave is the album that should have followed "Cry in the Night". In fact, it's much heavier than "Cry In the Night". According to Scott Waters own NoLifeTilMetal review, "The music fits squarely into the US power metal camp while retaining all the melody and hooks that Banshee have always been known for. The sound is a bit tougher, there may be a bit more groove and the lyrics are a little darker than their past albums, but overall Banshee still fits in that classic American power metal pocket...The sound is built around heavy, over-driven guitars, pounding drums, thunderous bass, screaming vocals and, of course, wicked guitar solos. George Call is a fantastic vocalist and really gives this album a ton of charisma. Comparisons to Tony Martin (Black Sabbath) and Ronnie James Dio would not be far off.Terry Dunn had this to say, "Mindslave is a body of musical and lyrical work written between 2007 and 2012. The songs were influenced by life events I experienced and people in my life. I felt I needed to create an album that was the continuum of our EP, “Cry In The Night”. I always wanted Banshee to be heavier with more interesting lyrics and I achieved that with “Mindslave”, This would be my first attempt at writing lyrics for an album. I collaborated with George Call the singer on the record who did a amazing job. The songs are a bit darker but mesh well with the subject matter and lyrics. I feel that this is Banshee’s best work to date..." Unfortunately the album never saw release on vinyl and was a very limited CD run that has been out of print and impossible to find.
