Bio:

Jimmy Wayne "Jimi" Jamison (born August 23, 1951 in Mississippi) is an American rock vocalist and songwriter, best known as the longtime frontman of platinum selling rock bands Cobra and Survivor and as the voice and cowriter of the theme song for Baywatch.By the late 1970s, he was fronting the local Memphis band, Target, and he went on to become the lead singer of the more well-known band, Cobra in the early 1980s. He would later provide background vocals for successful bands including ZZ Top, Joe Walsh and many others. After the demise of Cobra in 1983/84, he was invited to join Survivor, whose success had been on the wane since their number-one hit, "Eye of the Tiger." Although he was initially not adamant about fronting what he considered more of a "pop rock" band, which would contrast significantly with the heavy metal stylings of Cobra to which he had become accustomed, Jamison ultimately joined and became Survivor's new frontman.

Album:

In 2014, Jamison decided to cut his own version of the iconic song and, to be quite honest, it is vocally very similar to Bickler's take on the trrack, although I have long preferred Jamison's slightly gruffer vocals to those of Bickler, and the same holds true here.Musically, there was a good deal of re-arrangement of the track by Babbitt and Cleveland, who are both members of the Whitney Wolanin Band (yeah, I don't know who that is, either...). It is still very identifiable as "Eye Of The Tiger", but the music was updated a bit to keep the song from sounding as dated as you might anticipate, and to give it new life. In my opinion, this was done successfully, as Jamison's vocals are strong and the music is very nicely done, with a great guitar solo from Cleveland. The regular Anniversary Mix is nearly 45 seconds longer than the edit and features an extended guitar solo, while the "Sing Along" version is little more than a karaoke track that serves no purpose for me...

Line Up:

Jimi Jamison - Lead Vocals
Bob Babbitt - Bass
Dave Cleveland - Lead Guitar

Album:

The Search Is Over… JIMI JAMISON‘s previously unreleased debut album “Rock Hard” is finally released. Originally recorded 1989-1990, finally Iconoclassic Records label is releasing ”Rock Hard” in a deluxe, expanded CD edition. With Survivor having gone on hiatus following the release of 1988’s Too Hot to Sleep, Jamison pursued a solo career which bore fruit on the 1991 Scotti Bros. release ‘When Love Comes Down’. However, that wasn’t the album originally intended to be the Survivor frontman’s solo debut.Jamison entered the studio for ”Rock Hard” with producer-engineer Jim Gaines (Santana, Journey, Stevie Ray Vaughan) and producer-songwriter Kenny Mims (Kenny Rogers, Paul Davis, Mac Davis). Its material touched on every era of the singer’s career, including rockers in the style of Target, hard rock reminiscent of Cobra, and epic AOR destined to thrill his Survivor audience.Ready for release by late 1989, Jimi Jamison’s ‘Rock Hard’ album has never been heard… until now! ‘Rock Hard’ has been digitally remastered from the original master tapes by Patrick W. Engel and includes a 6000 word sleeve note delving into the history of the recordings. For this recording Jamison was joined by a host of musicians such as Mims (guitars, bass, keyboards), John Roth and Hal McCormack (electric guitar), David Cochran (bass), Scott Trammell (drums, percussion), Randy Cantor and Tony Thomas (keyboards), and others, and the 10-song album was completed by the end of 1989. It was ready for release when the decision was made to take Jamison’s solo career in a different direction. This is an awesome release, a lost gem from one of the greatest AOR singers finally available with a superb sound quality.

Album:

JIMI JAMISON is, without a doubt, a Rock ‘n Roll icon. With recent release of his 1989-1990 shelved album ‘Rock Hard’, many of you asked for this one. Some time before passing away, Jamison released by himself “Unreleased Music“, a collection of never released recordings from the past.Around 2005-2007 Jamison teamed up again with longtime collaborator Kenny Mims from Nashville and tracked down some original tunes written by the duo, all shelved. These are beautiful Melodic Rock songs, some with a blues and country/Americana flavor and the typical Jimi Jamison touch. Although including some acoustic instrumentation all are electric-based with a Rock pulse where the magical voice of Jimi takes the central stage. There’s a couple of songs penned with former Survivor guitarist/keyboardist Jim Peterik destined for an album together that never was finished. One of them is “Sound Of Home” (recorded by Peterik’s for Pride Of Lion 1st album) presented here in a more Classic Rock style, and “Heart Of A Woman” which appeared in Jamison/Peterik album ‘Extra Moments’, but this is a completely different version.“Unreleased Music” is an official release by Jimi Jamison own label / publishing SongCast. It shows Jimi’s more organic, Classic Rock side, but don’t be fooled, this stuff rocks from the heart. As all touched by this unique singer, “Unreleased Music” is a must have for any Melodic Rock / AOR fan.

Although he was initially not adamant about fronting what he considered more of a "pop rock" band, which would contrast significantly with the heavy metal stylings of Cobra to which he had become accustomed, Jamison ultimately joined and became Survivor's new frontman.

Album:

Finally, former Survivor lead singer JIMI JAMISON‘s previously unreleased 2007 solo album “Jimmy Wayne Jamison” is being released. The album is entirely written and produced by fellow former Survivor bandmate Jim Peterik and recorded with a cast of fine musicians, including Peterik and Mike Aquino (Mecca, Pride Of Lions). After leading Survivor to the top of the charts in the mid-80s, powerhouse vocalist Jimi Jamison reunited with Jim Peterik to cut… a country-rock album? The concept seems perplexing, yet it makes perfect sense. The singer was born Jimmy Wayne Jamison in smalltown Mississippi. Those who knew him best said that you could hear his Southern roots, no matter what he was singing. Today’s country music often blurs the line between true old school country, pop, and straight up rock & roll. The same is true with ”Jimmy Wayne Jamison” which at times, doesn’t stray too far from the Jimi Jamison that we all know and love so dearly.A young Jamison performed songs by The Marshall Tucker Band in his dues paying club days, cut background vocals for Molly Hatchet, and sang prominent harmonies all over ZZ Top’s massive ‘Eliminator’ album. ZZ Top frontman Billy Gibbons referred to Jamison as the “fourth member” of the group after working, touring, and hanging out with them in multiple occasions.Meanwhile, master songwriter Jim Peterik had written with Lynyrd Skynyrd, 38 Special, and Blackhawk. Peterik zeroes in on one thing about Jamison’s vocals that he registered almost immediately. “I heard what I called ‘the yodel’ in his voice, which is what I call the ‘Southern twang,’” he explains. “It’s not really Southern, but he’s got a catch in his voice that I made sure was in every song.”“It’s not like he sings this album with a certain twang or anything like that, it’s just Jamison,” Peterik offers as an expert summary. “I mean, there’s really not a huge dividing line between the two Jamisons, the ‘rock Jamison’ and what you’re hearing on this record, at least in my opinion. Maybe it’s a little more gentle? But he’s still rockin’.”Jimi Jamison’s ”Jimmy Wayne Jamison” album has never been heard… until now, thanks to this impeccable Iconoclassic Records CD, the second posthumous release from the Jimi Jamison Archives. There’s a very nice liner notes essay by Matt Wardlaw (Ultimate Classic Rock radio DJ and journalist) documenting the album’s creation.

Jimi Jamison – Lead and Background Vocals
Jim Peterik – Guitar, Bass, Keyboards, Background Vocals
Mike Aquino – Guitar, Mandolin
