Bio:

Tora Tora is an American hard rock band formed in Memphis, Tennessee, United States, in 1985. "Tora" means "tiger" in Japanese and the name is a play on the code name for attack used by the Japanese Imperial Navy during their attack on Pearl Harbor, "Tora, Tora, Tora". The actual origin of the band name was more likely a reference to the song of the same name recorded by Van Halen on their 1980 release Women and Children First.Tora Tora started out as a local garage band then eventually got studio time when they won a local Battle of the Bands contest. Following this, the band recorded To Rock To Roll as an independent EP. After its release the songs "Phantom Rider" and "Love's A Bitch" received extensive airplay on local radio station Rock 98. After signing with A&M Records, they recorded their debut album Surprise! Attack in 1989. This album peaked on Billboard's Top 200 at No. 47 and featured the singles "Walkin' Shoes" and "Guilty." The single "Dancing With a Gypsy" was on the soundtrack for the film Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure later that year.In 1992, their second album, Wild America, was released. It only achieved No. 134 on the Billboard charts and it did not sell as well, but, it was a more mature step at songwriting.A third album, Revolution Day, was recorded in 1994, but it was never released due to label restructuring. After missing the due date, the band folded. In 2008, all four original band members reunited to do several performances. One was a sold out performance at Newby's, a local club in Memphis, to celebrate their 20th anniversary of receiving their recording contract. After the show, a record was sold to fans which included songs from their first two albums and material slated for their unreleased Revolution Day album. The album was titled The Warehouse... 20 Years Later. The second occurred during Rocklahoma 2008. The band played another reunion show at The New Daisy Theatre on March 7, 2009, in Memphis. At the end of 2009, Tora Tora signed with the Nashville, Tennessee based FNA Records and released three albums. Before & After, Bombs Away: The Unreleased Surprise Attack Recordings, and Miss B. Haven': The Unreleased Wild America Recordings. On February 28, 2011, FNA Records in conjunction with the band decided after 17 years since the completion of their third album, which was shelved indefinitely at the time due to label complications, to release their "lost album" Revolution Day. Anthony Corder stated about the Revolution Day Sessions:

Album:

Surprise Attack is the debut studio album released by the hard rock band Tora Tora. This album is true Memphis rock; bluesy lyrics and hard rock. They won a rock contest put on by Strings and Things (local music store) and took the money and made a demo. Needless to say, we all had a copy of that demo. Kids like myself would go watch them jam at warehouses owned by one of the band members. And, after this album was released, they came home and put on a killer show at the Omni New Daisy that I'll always remember. They put out this record in 1989, after we knew the songs for 2 years. We all skipped school to go buy it. It's truely a great album. Phantom Rider is awesome, and Walkin' Shoes is true Memphis rock. The sad thing is that this album came out in 1989. Had it come out in 1987 or 1988, it would have been ten times bigger than what actually happened. They also put out a second album, Wild America, that is just as good if not better. They also recorded a third album, Revolution Day, that was never released by A&M.

Anthony Corder stated about the Revolution Day Sessions:

Album:

To make it more complete the Bad Reputation Records remastered reissue of TORA TORA's here's "Miss B. Haven'; The Unreleased Recordings", comprising 13 tracks / demos that were written for the Wild America album. While recorded during the pre-production stage of the LP, these songs did not make it into the final album track list.To me, "Wild America" was a quantum leap ahead of their debut album Surprise Attack - the band really hit their stride here and was simply in the zone. Not surprisingly, this batch of 13 tracks recorded during the "Wild America" sessions contain a lot of standouts. This is not a case of 'leftovers', any of these songs are on par in terms of quality with the ones that ended on the final release."Wild America" could have been a double record - in 1992, it seems Tora Tora could crank out endless radio-friendly rockers.Despite being of demo quality (mostly very good), "Miss B. Haven'" is loaded with thunderous, infectious rockers, where the hooks and catchy riffs jump right out at you.Highlights include "Take It As You Like It", "Ain't Nothin' To It", "Bite the Bullet", and "Serious", but all are really good."Miss B. Haven'; The Unreleased Wild America Recordings" is not only for 'completists'; these songs are top notch and easily could have been considered for another official album from Tora Tora.Seriously, 'Wild America' may have been a Double-Album, but it was 1992 and not an option for record company executives at the time.

Line-Up:

Anthony Corder stated about the Revolution Day Sessions:

Album:

Past year cult Memphis hard rockers TORA TORA were approached by Frontiers Music about recording a proper new studio album and they enthusiastically jumped at the opportunity. The resulting LP, "Bastards Of Beale" is set for release in Europe on February 22, and tomorrow this Japan Edition plus a bonus track.Tora Tora released two stupendous traditional hard rock records between the late '80s and the beginning of the Nineties. Always a far cry from their more glammy mainstream peers and more spiritually connected to blue collar hard rock, for "Bastards Of Beale" the band's return picks up where they left off, while not sounding even the slightest bit dated. The new album brings back the magic of the band's blues-rooted hard rock sound that gained them a loyal following upon their debut in the late '80s.Opener “Sons Of Zebedee” put things clear; Tora Tora rocking machine is intact, oiled, and with a slightly 'classic rock' feel, especially in the production sound.“Giants Fall” is typical of both their work of the past and this record more specifically, because it grooves, it is basically blues rock and it has a hook and a chorus that many of their peers never did.Looking back on those early records, actually, they were ahead of their time, because Tora Tora were racing somewhere different from the glam rockers. Now everyone is adding a bit of blues or 'classic rock elements' to the mix.The fact that all four original members are here doesn’t half help too. There is just a chemistry in the swagger of “Everbrite” Anthony Corder and Keith Douglas know instinctively when to trade licks and vocals.“Silence The Sirens” is one of the album highlights, injecting some real urgency. There’s some grit in the engine room of drummer John Patterson and a chug in the bass of Patrick Francis, while “Son Of A Prodigal Son” has a bit of a country flavor, American acoustic rock in fact, as the scales and vocals are bluesy based.“All Good Things” is essentially a party hard bluesy rockin' tunes, then “Rose Of Jericho” offers a little bit of a homage to rock n' roll itself. Almost as if they know they are standing on the shoulders of giants here. There's even a line at the bridge that says “rock n roll ain’t dead yet…”As if to prove that, the title track rocks like, well, a bastard frankly. The band takes its name from a Van Halen song and there is a bit of the carefree of Eddie’s lads here. “Jagger And Richards, Plant And Page, they were the ones that carried the flame, “ sings Corder, and he’s just the fan he always was, that much is clear. That’s why this works. Because on “Bastards Of Beale” Tora Tora are merely playing the music they love. And dare we say would be listening to, if they weren’t playing it themselves – and not a ballad is to be seen, either.Don’t worry about 25 years the band not releasing a new studio album. Don’t question what might have been. Just be grateful Tora Tora are back, the glorious bastards.

Album:

Universal Music Japan has started this year another campaign of their ‘HR/HM 1000‘ series, that meaning the reissue of long time out of print albums from their Hard Rock / Heavy Metal catalog at the price of 1000 Yen = about 9,5 USD.As part of the 2022 HR-HM 1000 Vol.4 series it was reissued “Surprise Attack“, 1989’s TORA TORA debut album. Formed 1985 in Memphis, TN, the band appeared in a local Battle of the Bands contest and won. This led them to their first chance at studio time. Gig and new demos ended on the hands of A&M and signed TORA TORA in 1987.TORA TORA indeed ‘surprised’ with “Surprise Attack”, a bluesy hard rocking LP musically pretty different from the hair metal of the era, a style which would became a staple in US rock between 1990-1991. A kick ass collection of rockers, even the midtempo / semi-ballads rock hard. This album is true Memphis rock; bluesy lyrics and hard rock. They won a rock contest put on by Strings and Things (local music store) and took the money and made a demo. Needless to say, we all had a copy of that demo. According times (1991-92) in “Wild America” Tora Tora have traded in much of the party melodic hard attitude that they displayed in their debut album for a more focused, tight, and mature sound. However, on this second CD there’s even more sing-a-long songs, and the catchy factor is still delivered in spades. The best way to describe “Wild America” would be to take 2 parts Tesla, 1 part Cinderella, and 1 part Great White, yet Tora Tora had their own personality, and if you ask me, some songs here are even better than many of these mentioned acts. How can a recipe like that fail? Well, unfortunately for Tora Tora, this timeless kind of hard rock started to fade away in the US market when the album was released. But who cares? what matter is legacy, and Tora Tora did a terrific hard rock album here.

Album:

Tora Tora - Before & After - is a "New" Collection of "Old" Recordings. Before & After is comprised of 10 tracks . The first 5 tracks are from the "VERY LIMITED" cassette-only release of To Rock To Roll. (See the original album art on the inside of this album). The sixth track is the very original recorded version of Walkin' Shoes which would eventually wind up on Surprise Attack and be a stand out track and video. The remaining four tracks are demos that were written for the unreleased third album and never turned into A&M records. Here's your chance to see how Tora Tora was progressing as the music industry was taking a very new direction. Once again, FnA Records went in and cleaned up a lot of the stray noises that can occur when recording demos...and the outcome is an extremely listenable project. On top of that, the listener gets to hear some AMAZING Tora Tora tunes that were never available anywhere else until now. Be sure to check out the other rare recordings being released through FnA Records on Tora Tora. In trying to stay with the hugely succesful album cover of the bomber girl that donned the Surprise Attack album cover, FnA Records has recruited some of the top artists to design its artwork for the new Tora Tora releases.Tora Tora started out as a local hard rock "garage" band formed in Memphis, TN in 1985. They eventually won a "Battle Of The Bands" which earned them some studio time. This would eventually lead to the release of an independent (and very limited cassette only release) of an EP entitled To Rock To Roll. The songs "Phantom Rider" and "Love's A Bitch" received extensive airplay on local radio station Rock 98 which then lead to the band signing with A&M Records. For A&M records they recorded their debut album Surprise Attack in 1989. This album peaked on Billboard's Top 200 at #47. The single "Dancing With A Gypsy" was on the soundtrack for the film Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure later that year. In 1992, their second album, Wild America, was released. Although only reaching #134 on the Billboard charts, it was a more mature step at songwriting.Currently, the band gets together approximately two times a year and plays a full force live show. In 2009, they signed exclusively with FnA Records to release 3 albums of material.

Tora Tora Bombs Away (The Unreleased Surprise Attack Recordings) - is a "New" Collection of "Old" Recordings. Bombs Away is comprised of 11 tracks that were demos written for the Surprise Attack album. These are the tracks that did not make the album. Anthony Corder stated about the Revolution Day Sessions:

Album:

Anthony Corder on the Revolution Day Sessions: The Revolution Day project was an interesting time for TORA TORA. It was the '93-'94 era, we were overlapping the last embers of our Wild America dates, rehearsing ideas for the new project, growing from our touring experiences, and experimenting with recording techniques. We relocated our rehearsal space to a warehouse over by the Memphis airport, and tried to stay focused on pre-production. We were pulling together ideas from handheld cassette recorders, scribbled napkins, & 8 track recordings we made on the bus or hotel rooms. I think we were more comfortable with our creative spirits, more confident in our ideas and our approach to songwriting. All of us contributed on the former projects, but everyone was struggling for the third project to keep the TORA identity, and go somewhere new at the same time. We definately had moments of anxiety and frustation but it was all well worth it once we locked down the tunes. We were joined by The Memphis Horns as well as Susan Marshall and Stacy Plunk adding back-up vocals on two tracks. The Revolution sessions were some of our most memorable escapades, and had us back at home in Ardent, hanging with Molly's LaCasita crew, and me personally closing down most Midtown establishments.Additional comments by Keith Douglas: This was also the same time the entire industry shifted due to a certain Cobain fellow. I think we felt a bit shunned. It was a rough era, but listening back to Revolution Day, its still something to be very proud of. The files found and shared on the net are a poor copy from cassette to cd that are actually too fast. This release will be the closest thing ever to the original recording. Revolution Day Is Here!

Anthony Corder stated about the Revolution Day Sessions:

Album:

Memphis, Tennessee rockin’ outfit TORA TORA have a knack for pairing chunky metal riffs with the bluesy swagger of groovy hard rock. Emerging in the late 1980s, they landed a trio of hits in 1989, one of which found its way onto the soundtrack for Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure, succumbed to the onslaught of grunge in the early ’90s, called it quits, and then re-formed in the 2010s.Tora Tora re-formed in 2008 — with the original line-up intact — for a series of live shows, and in 2011 they issued the long-gestating Revolution Day. A deal was struck with Frontiers Records in 2017, resulting in the release of their first collection of all-new material in 25 years, the aptly named Bastards of Beale.Tora Tora continue rocking venues playing live, and releasing new studio songs as standalone singles. Today they band is releasing “The Best of the Rest“, a new album including their recent songs plus some others recorded decades ago.Formed in 1985 around the talents of Anthony Corder, Keith Douglas, Patrick Francis, and John Patterson, the band adopted their moniker from the song of the same name from Van Halen’s 1980 LP Women and Children First. A popular band on the local scene, they earned a chunk of studio time after winning a regional Battle of the Bands contest and recorded an independent EP, To Rock to Roll. Two of the songs from the release, “Love’s a Bitch” and “Phantom Radio,” received multiple spins on local radio station Rock 98, and caught the attention of A&M Records, which quickly scooped up the heavily buzzed-about band.Tora Tora went widescreen in 1989 with the release of their major-label debut, Surprise Attack, which featured the singles “Guilty,” “Walkin’ Shoes,” and “Dancing with a Gypsy,” the latter of which appeared on the soundtrack to the hit comedy Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure.A sophomore effort, Wild America, arrived in 1992, a third album, Revolution Day, was recorded but shelved. Like many hard rock/heavy metal bands of the era, their success was cut short by the arrival of grunge. The first four songs into “The Best of the Rest” are new studio songs, rockers and a ballad with that classic Tora Tora bluesy melodic feel. All good and a proof the band still got the fire. The other songs, while some have been released by specialized labels, only were available on physical format and didn’t reached many fans world-wide. Most of these are recordings from the ‘Wild America’ album sessions but not released back in the day, professionally done. This band rocks – Tora Tora have a unique style, American, soulful bluesy hard rock with a timeless sound – blood, steel & wood made music that will never die.

Album:

Here’s in full quality French reissue label Bad Reputation remastered version of 1992’s TORA TORA album “Wild America“, delivered with their usual pristine sound plus 5 juicy, collectors bonus tracks. After their catchy ’89 debut album, for their second effort Tora Tora took a more traditional hard rock approach, much harder-hitting and less ‘glammy’.According times (1991-92) in “Wild America” Tora Tora have traded in much of the party melodic hard attitude that they displayed in their debut album for a more focused, tight, and mature sound. However, on this second CD there’s even more sing-a-long songs, and the catchy factor is still delivered in spades. For one thing, vocalist Anthony Corder gained more control over his wild and high-pitched voice, having better discretion with when to rein it in and when to let it loose. Every musician in this album improved, most notably guitarist Keith Douglas with some excellent solos and subtle yet brilliant fills inserted into most of the songs. The band also honed their blues-obsessed sound and really got interesting with it, with some songs even featuring pianos, harmonicas, and acoustic guitar. The best way to describe “Wild America” would be to take 2 parts Tesla, 1 part Cinderella, and 1 part Great White, yet Tora Tora had their own personality, and if you ask me, some songs here are even better than many of these mentioned acts. How can a recipe like that fail? Well, unfortunately for Tora Tora, this timeless kind of hard rock started to fade away in the US market when the album was released – but artistically this is a winner. This is an album to be enjoyed as a whole, but if I have to mention my favorites, the midtempo bluesy magic of “Faith Healer” takes the prize.Other standouts include “Amnesia” and “Dirty Secrets,” which are just undeniably groovy and hard rocking songs. “Amnesia” has particularly great snotty lyrics that remind me of Tora Tora’s arguably biggest hit ‘Walkin’ Shoes’ with lines like, “If you think I still need you, well, you’ve got amnesia” and “You said you was just talkin’ to a friend.”There’s brilliant upbeat outlaw track in “Dead Man’s Hand” driven by smooth riffs that even features a saxophone and brings back a lot of that swagger and personality that the band showed in their debut album, and “Nowhere to Go But Down,” a dark and beautiful acoustic-laced ballad. As bonus tracks we have the B-Sides taken from the now impossible to find 3 CDsingles released from the record: these songs are “Walkin’ Shoes”, “Love’s A Bitch” and “Hard Times”, all appeared in Tora tora’s first album but here in different versions (remixed?) As plus there’s a rare remix of “Faith Healer” and the exclusive song Tora Tora recorded for “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure” movie soundtrack. From start to finish “Wild America [Bad Reputation remaster +5]” is a great, classic hard rock record that really stands up as a lost, overlooked early 90s US rock.Tora Tora clearly matured from their first album and put together a bunch of excellently-performed, top tier classy hard rock songs. Like many ’80s glam metal bands, when the genre started to fade out in the early Nineties, Tora Tora shed their poppy inclinations and married themselves to a heavier, bluesier, and more mature sound. And it worked out very well for them.I would probably put this in line with Tesla’s ‘The Great Radio Controversy’ as far as how well it was written, performed and produced.“Wild America” was reissued / remastered during the past decade (out of print now) but this Bad Reputation Records remastering sound blows out of the water any previous version of this rocking CD.
