Formed by two brothers and two lifelong friends, Black Mountain Shine have a history of making music together. Band members have performed over 1,600 shows while sharing the stage with Blake Shelton, Little Big Town, 38 Special, Toby Keith, Trace Adkin, Kip Moore, Gretchen Wilson, Marty Stuart, and many others.2014 introduces the world to Black Mountain Shine, a fresh start with an amazing collection of original material. The BMS release is not about trying to fit into a trend or genre, but is more about a way of life. Growing up in the mountains of southwestern Virginia, the group has honed their skill the old fashion way…by working hard and taking their music to the fans. Trampus Stamper's contemporary vocals are complimented by old-school twin lead guitars reminiscent of the Allman Brothers Band. Throw in a bluegrass approach to vocal harmonies and a high energy live show and…well, you get the idea. Black Mountain Shine is a band to be remembered.
Trampus Stamper- Lead Vocals/ Frontman:
Growing up in a family of musicians, Trampus discovered his musical talent early. Mimicking Axle Rose by the age of 7, he was destined to front a band. In high school Trampus was an all-state athlete in both football and basketball (he is the leading scoring in Rural Retreat Basketball history). But he had other interests as music started to take priority to athletics.At the age of 15, he and his brother Chris Rakes formed Drivn, a successful touring band that played over 1,200 shows from 2001-2007. Together, they shared the stage with Blake Shelton, Little Big Town, 38 Special, and Puddle of Mudd. Trampus' distinct voice and charismatic stage presence stole the show as Drivn knocked on the door of success. However after seven years of knocking, they disbanded to take a well deserved break. In 2014, Trampus reunited with his brother and friends to form Black Mountain Shine. The band's undeniable chemistry was immediate as the BMS debut album is the best work of their career.
Chris Rakes- Guitar/Vocals:
A veteran of over 1,600 shows, Chris has been performing since the late 90's with several successful bands. Over the years, this self-taught musician has worked his way up the ladder with his determination and strong work ethic. A student of the songwriting craft since high school, Chris' song "Tomorrow Today" was nominated for an "Edgie Award" by K-Rock Radio. His work on the Black Mountain Shine album is the culmination of his writing career.As a lead guitarist, Chris has drawn comparisons to Slash and Joe Bonamassa as he brings his swagger to the southern rock/ country genre.
Ben Caudill- Bass Guitar:
Heavily influenced by Led Zeppelin's John Paul Jones, Ben is a throwback to the golden era of rock n' roll. He honed his chops by learning a variety of styles, from Deep Purple and Black Sabbath to BB King and Ryan Adams. Ben has also performed since he was 17 years old.One week after his high school graduation, he was on the road working with Trampus and Chris' band Drivn as a stage hand. Two year later, he joined the band as the bass player and the rest is history.
Robbie Surratt- B3 Organ/Keys/Vocals:
Raised by a family of musicians, it wasn't long before Robbie found himself onstage with them. As a drummer, he traveled with his family's gospel group touring as a successful regional act. By the age of 20, he had added the guitar, harmonica, and piano to his bag of tricks. However, Robbie had found his passion with the piano and B3 organ.
Performing in country/ southern rock bands, writing & recording music, and various studio projects have kept him busy over the bulk of his career. By 2014, he found his way into the Black Mountain Shine lineup.Robbie's traditional country music style is the perfect compliment to the rocking guitars that define the band's sound.
Billy Roof- Drums/Vocals:
As the latest addition to the BMS lineup, Billy's groove, chops, and over-all versatility are the backbone of the BMS show. As a seasoned professional, he has performed with many bands from a variety of genres.
Billy honed his craft by starting his career as a metal drummer. He later moved over to the country/southern rock genre after he was drawn the songwriting and heartfelt emotion of the genre. Billy has found a home in Black Mountain Shine.
Album:
They released a self titled album...Black Mountain Shine are easily one of, if not the best Country/Rock band I have heard in a very long time. Possibly since the UK heyday of Lonestar.This album consists of ten very catchy tunes that are very well performed.Think a Lonestar/Bon Jovi hybrid and you’ll get the idea of how these guys sound. I could happily listen to these guys all day long.I definitely think we hear lots more about them in the future.
