Aquostic II: That's a Fact! is the thirty-second studio album by English rock band Status Quo, first released on 21 October 2016.Over the years a myth has grown up around Quo that all songs sound the same and that their songs amount to the ABC of rock, three chords, heads down, see you at the end.As those who take the time to listen to the band’s back catalogue will soon realise however the band and music are a lot more complex than most people give them credit for. The release of the first Aquostic album ably demonstrated there is a lot more to Status Quo than meets the ear and this latest release emphasises that point.With the imminent demise of the fully electric, high energy Quo live shows the slower, more laid back acoustic approach is the perfect way to ensure that the band can continue to deliver the goods in concert. Better a slow Quo than no Quo!This album continues in the same vein as the previous Aquostic release bringing together new versions of live favourites coupled with some less well known album tracks and a few new numbers for good measure.‘That’s A Fact!’, opens proceedings. I did worry for a few seconds that the guys had gone with a cover of George Michael’s ‘Faith’ to get things going as the opening chords are much the same. I needn’t have worried though as the song soon turned into a feel good folk rock song with a great melody which has a bit of a Mariachi band feel to it.‘Roll Over Lay Down’ follows and it has been transformed into a slow paced bluesy stomp which works well. One song perfectly suited to the acoustic makeover is ‘Dear John’ which is underpinned by the delicate strains of the string quartet and for me is one of the album highlights. Francis Rossi puts in a heartfelt vocal performance here which really brings out the emotional content of the lyrics. This is followed by ‘In The Army Now’ which is kept fairly standard, but the addition of the string section and the odd mouth organ blast add depth and drama.One song that stands out on this album for me is ‘Hold You Back’. Always one of my favourite Quo tracks, the mandolin-led version included here is such good fun and so joyful it should be on prescription. If this doesn’t put a smile on your face and get you bouncing then I would check for a pulse. In a live setting this will be a set highlight, no question.Another new track ‘One For The Road’ is next and it has a country tinge to it with great harmonic vocals on the chorus. ‘Backwater’ is as dark and brooding as ever with the string section again taking the lead. The last of the new tracks ‘One Of Everything’ follows and is an upbeat, uptempo song, again with a country tinge to the melody.Two less well known tracks are then given the acoustic makeover in the shape of ‘Belavista Man’ and ‘Lover Of The Human Race’ both of which transfer well to the new format. ‘Ice In The Sun’ then takes us way back to the depths of the Quo archive. As with ‘Pictures Of Matchstick Men’ on the first album the 60’s sound of ‘Ice’ is perfect for this treatment, it transports you back to a land of loon pants and dodgy moustaches.A swinging version of ‘Mess Of Blues’ and ‘Jam Side Down’ follow. The album is then rounded off with a stripped back, rock n roll version of ‘Resurrection’ complete with some tasty slide guitar and mouth organ all that’s missing is the lazy ‘gator in the swamp!Status Quo may well be winding things down in the coming months and with recent health issues who could grudge them a bit of respite. The Quo Army however can take heart in the fact that musically the band are still in rude health and those searching out their Quo fix will not be disappointed with this album.They may be unplugged but Status Quo are still on a charge.

On the release day of this album I will be avoiding social media at all costs. The luddites and trolls will be out in force to decry this album as a travesty and a slur on the Quo legacy, produced, in their opinion, by a ‘tribute’ act. I can hear the laments now for the days of the frantic four, people extoling the virtues of double denim as a fashion choice and there will be those calling for no less than the head of Francis Rossi, atop a Fender Telecaster, in a glass case at their nearest Hard Rock Cafe!Very few though will have actually bothered to listen to the new album which in my opinion is probably the best Quo release in recent memory. Things do get off to a slow start however with opener ‘Waiting For A Woman’.Not sure who arranged the track listing for the album but this song would have been better popping up mid-album rather than being the opener. It’s by no means a bad track however there are better, more gripping songs which would have been better openers.For me ‘Cut Me Some Slack’ would have been more than up to the task of being track 1. Built on a dirty riff cranked out by Francis Rossi and Ritchie Malone this is more like it, Quo firing on all cylinders.‘Liberty Lane’ keeps up the pace with some excellent cowbell work at the start from Leon Cave, what song isn’t enhanced by a bit of cowbell? This track contains a great melody and has been receiving a lot of airplay on the radio.‘I See You’re In Some Trouble’ bounces along on a pumping riff, with a great bass line from Rhino Edwards, and contains a big chorus. ‘Backing Off’ is probably my favourite song on the album, again the guitar work here is superb with some unusual twists thrown in along the way. This is the sound of a band really enjoying themselves in the studio and 33 albums in that is quite some feat!‘I Wanna Run Away With You’ is an old school rocker with a great 12 bar riff that takes you back to the band’s heyday, yes it is that good. The title track ‘Backbone’ follows sticking two fingers up to any of the doubters who think the band are a spent force, Rossi and co are standing proud and are happy to take on the naysayers with an arsenal of 11 top tunes!The chugging riff of ‘Better Take Care’ is another highlight on the album and it contains a cracking guitar solo from Rossi, it is easy to dismiss Francis as a 12 bar wonder but his playing here is top notch. ‘Falling Off The World‘ is another familiar Quo standard with a heavy mid section which will be great in a live setting.The guys then hit full throttle with ‘Get Out Of My Head’ which is a fast paced out and out rocker. Again, live this will be a storming track, if you don’t nod your head along to this one then I would check for a pulse. ‘Running Out Of Time’ then brings the album to a close in fine style, whether this is a comment on the band’s collective age or its longevity is not specified, but this album proves there is plenty of life in the old dog yet.Francis Rossi states on the accompanying blurb that the young blood in the band, Ritchie Malone and Leon Cave, has re-energised the group and this album is the sound of a band renewed. The latest version of Quo may be a bit like Trigger’s Broom, however they have swept away the cobwebs and have produced an album worthy of the legacy and undoubtedly the best album the band have produced in many years.

Christmas is coming, and STATUS QUO are releasing 2022 a strictly limited collector’s EP featuring their festive anthem ‘It’s Christmas Time’. The song has been freshly remastered this year and will be released on 16 December 2022.As well as the evergreen ‘It’s Christmas Time’ this release will also feature brand new 2022 studio versions of the band’s timeless classics ‘Caroline’, ‘Paper Plane’ & ‘Rockin’ All Over The World’, plus ‘It’s Christmas Time (Quo-eoke Mix)’ ‘It’s Christmas Time’ was originally released in 2008 and was written by the late great Rick Parfitt and Wayne Morris. The band have just completed a string of high-profile UK gigs on the ‘Out Out Quo’ing’ Tour and are now embarking on nine European dates taking them right up to Christmas itself.
