I formed the Casanovas in 1999 with my brother, Patrick on drums and our friend Jim Lewis on bass. After about 5 rehearsals fate would have us supporting our local heroes, the Powder Monkeys for our first show at the now called Northcote social club (The Commercial Club Hotel back then). We played due to other members of Jim’s other band, Red Shift, incredibly not turning up for the gig. We had about 5 songs and were really rough but it was a gig nonetheless and it got an enthusiastic enough response from the crowd for us to be spurred on and write more songs. Fast forward to a year, heaps of gigs, and a 7 inch release later, we were playing Meredith, The Big Day Out and JJJ Live At The Wireless and with a then pretty much unknown White Stripes.To be honest the rest is a bit of a blur but involved heaps of touring and the continued rise in hype for the band. We put out the ‘Keep It Hot’ EP which was followed by Jim sadly leaving the band due to work commitments. Jim shoes were filled by our current bass player and singer extraordinaire, Damo Campbell (ex Mustang). As a fitting farewell to Jim, we played the Melbourne leg of our tour supporting our NY punk heroes, ‘The Dictators’ with him on bass. For Damo it was a baptism of fire supporting The Dictators and Celibate Rifles in Sydney for his first shows with the band.After touring Europe and America in early 2003 with good friends, The Datsuns, we headed back to Oz for more and more national touring before starting the recording of our first album ‘The Casanovas’. We were nominated for best breakthrough single at the Arias that year…. Our category was won by none other than Delta Goodrem! It was a rough time as the touring had pushed intra band relationships to the limits at times and sadly Patrick left the group during the recording of the first album. We were really lucky to secure punk rock pedigreed Jaws Stanley of ‘The Onyas’ on drums…. he finished what was left to do on the album and the band pushed on.After that it was more and more touring….. in Japan , the UK again, Spain as well as nationally with Motley Crue, Motorhead and The Darkness to name but a few. We were nominated for best live band at the 2005 Jack Awards. We recorded our 2nd album ‘All Night Long’ in northern California with producer Sylvia Massey in July 2005. Of course there was plenty more touring after that.The last few years have been quiet for the band (except for a Black Crowes tour) due to life getting in the way and horrible legal battles with an ex manager! Thankfully all that stuff is water under the bridge now and with the recording of a few songs for a soon to be released 7 inch, the feeling is really exciting again. The 3rd album is the next objective but in the meanwhile our shows lately have been incredible and the matured band is better than ever.

Melbourne rockers the Casanovas formed in 1999 and despite highs and lows, illness and legal wrangles, they've not only endured, but find themselves feeling stronger than ever.Featuring singer Tommy Boyce's unmistakeable guitar licks, Damien Campbell on bass and "Jaws" Stanley on drums, the trio have supported acts including Motley Crue, the Datsuns, and the legendary Motorhead, as well as touring Japan, the US and Europe.The band's long-awaited album launch for Terra Casanova on Friday comes nine years since their last studio album, All Night Long. There are, however, several reasons fans had to wait for new material, says Boyce.Despite playing big festivals such as Meredith, Big Day Out and Triple J live, All Night Long failed commercially and the experience "really robbed the morale of the band," Boyce says.Coming on top of legal disputes with former management and Boyce suffering from haemochromatosis – a physically debilitating iron overload disorder – the setbacks kept coming so the trio took a hiatus to make sure Tommy recovered."We never really stopped," he says, but with renewed energy the group decidedthey needed something new to show for themselves – a new album. "The beauty of the long recording process is the quality of sound and lyrics," Boyce says.Produced by Jimi Maroudas on the Rubber Records label, Terra Casanova has a variety of influences compared to earlier albums. Its deliberately raw sound compared with what Boyce calls today's "over processed and compressed music" has a distinct `70s feel, and is typically riff driven with big, catchy choruses.Fans will instantly recognise the Casanovas' signature sound, but variety is not a dirty word to Boyce, who says "to some extent" they have re-invented their sound on thenew album. "I'd like to vary the style even more because I love so much music. But it is hard – you develop a crowd and they have expectations – you don't want to shoot yourself in the foot."
