Album:

Purpendicular is a band that started basically out as a Deep Purple tribute band. Which is also how I got to see them originally, when they were doing a gig with Ian Paice on the drums. That was in 2008, a great concert and a wonderful night, and I was very impressed with their skills. So, I was pleased and thrilled, when they eventually announced their first album with their own songs. It should take again a long time for it to be finished and released, but finally, so many years, some changes in line-up – and a number of concerts I should have seen – later, I could hear the first four songs from said album live. Those four songs did fit very well in between so many Purple classics, so my expectations for the entire album were quite high.Knowing that all the four instrumentalists from Deep Purple had contributed to the album, I had fun listening for the first time without reading any informations, but trying to figure out who was playing on which song. To be honest, I was most of the time wrong – which should give you some indication how good this album is!The album starts with a big bang (so to say, a gong being hit). Great, swinging rhythm (ok, Ian Paice on the drums…), but also an enormously catchy chorus, and a guitar solo that might come from Steve Morse himself (which it doesn’t). Listen to this track twice, and it will stay with you for the rest of the day.The same goes for the next two tracks. Very rhythm-emphasised and with quite ‘dirty’ vocals from Robby Walsh. ‘Only to laugh at’ reminds vaguely of Deep Purple’s ‘Sail Away’, which is by no means a bad thing. I have seen an audience do some serious headbanging to these songs, even when hearing them only for the first time.‘Rain is gone’ is a bit less straightforward, with a more intricate rhythm, an almost oriental feeling about it, and a slide solo to boot. Roger Glover on bass.‘If it’s possible’ is the first song with a bit of a more laid-back approach. Lovely piano work by Christoph Kögler, and Robby singing in a higher register.‘Off my trolley’ starts with a trademark Hammond chord of Don Airey and sports a typical Steve Morse solo. This song will make all Deep Purple aficionados happy, but is probably the least ‘Purpendicular-ish’ one.‘Broken Bones’ is again mid-tempo, with all the qualities of a slow burner.‘Crazy’ was the fourth song they played live, and without any doubt rightfully chosen. Serious foot-tapping and/or head-nodding on my side.‘Keep me away’ is probably the song where Robby shines most. Vocals that are intriguingly ‘almost-off’, and screams that would make any singer proud. Plus lovely guitar work from Frank Pané.The album closes with an ‘Samara’. The title is programme, and who thinks of Led Zeppelin’s ‘Kashmir’ is not totally wrong. To be honest, I could have sworn that it is Steve playing the solo here, but apparently it is Frank who contributes the (for me) best solo on the album. Conclusion:This album shows a band that has found its own identity. They play in the spirit of the great rock bands of the 70s, without clinging too much to any of them.Good, solid Rock and Roll, with the occasional twist, but that is what makes things interesting. Not a single ‘weak’ track to be found, and fitting for basically every mood.If you want to do some serious workout at a concert, or face a long drive on a highway, this is the music for you.

Album:

I guess PURPENDICULAR wouldn't be a better name for this band that spends their days as a Deep Purple cover band, but at times they want to do their “own” thing. "Venus To Volcanus" is their second album of songs written by themselves and one of them is co-written with Deep Purple’s Ian Paice and former Rainbow Tony Carey. Founded by Irish-born vocalist Robby Thomas Walsh, Purpendicular is one of the most sought-after and popular Deep Purple tribute acts out there today. The fact that legendary Purple drummer Ian Paice relatively often tours and performs with these guys is testimony to just how talented this international band truly is when it comes to covering and evoking the essence of Deep Purple on stage. Put it this way, I do not think Mr. Paice would have bothered if Purpendicular was a waste of time. What is even cooler is that the band's new album, the 11-track effort entitled "Venus to Volcanus", consists of brand new and original material. No cover tunes or anything like that. We are talking all-new tracks. On top of that, Ian Paice and former Rainbow keyboardist Tony Carey co-wrote and make guest appearances on one song, which is obviously pretty damn wicked.Musically speaking, "Venus to Volcanus" is highly inspired by Deep Purple and Rainbow and so on, which is hardly surprising, but one can trace quite a few modern influences as well. It is not all-out retro rock that is on display here. Having said that, it is obvious that all the different eras of Purple serve as a source of inspiration to Purpendicular in the sense that some parts sound like they could have been present on the classic 'Fireball' (1971) record while others are slightly more groovy and bring to mind the 'Rapture of the Deep' (2005) album. In that sense, you could argue that although "Venus to Volcanus" is rooted in the progressive hard rock of old, it does sound strangely current somehow. For the most part, the songs are memorable and easy to absorb and digest, but there are a couple of semi-experimental compositions that are both challenging and interesting to dig into, namely "Absence" and "Trouble Man". My favorite cuts are the infectious "We Both Go Down" and the uplifting "No Rest". The opening track, the crunchy and dynamic "The Bullet", rules too. "I Can't Win Them All" is another highlight. The interplay between the guitars and the Hammond organ is superb and the rhythm section is tight and solid, so no complaints there. In other words, the musicianship is excellent in every sense of the word. Speaking of musicianship, Ian Paice and Tony Carey are featured in the track named "Wonderful", which is one of the more funky and bouncy tunes to be found on this disc.Robby Thomas Walsh's voice is both gritty and smooth. It covers quite a lot of ground but always with a sense of passion and intensity to it. In all honesty, it took me a little while to get used to it, but the more I listen to it the more I like it. A talented singer and charismatic frontman for sure. The production is suitably vintage as well.If classic hard rock turns you on then I strongly suggest that you check "Venus to Volcanus" out as soon as it becomes available. Like I said, the vibe and atmosphere of the record is very much in the vein of Deep Purple, which is basically all that needs to be said. This is quality classic hard rock done right!

Album:

A simply phenomenal rock album and a true treat for fans of the sounds of Deep Purple. If anyone feels they do not get enough “Purple” from the last couple of Deep Purple studio albums, you have found your fix.Beginning as the top Deep Purple tribute act, Perpendicular has morphed into a band that carries on the legacy and musical gravitas of Deep Purple while adding their own flavor and style to their sounds. The tracks are clearly influenced by the sounds of the original band, yet it is not done in a copy-cat type of way. It doesn’t feel forced or unoriginal but rather fresh, innovative and comfortable. Funky, bluesy and mystic grooves that drive the album all the way down such as “Ghost” “Something Magical” and “Made of Steel” & flawless instrumentation from everyone involved, including Deep Purple’s own and only consistent member throughout, Ian Paice. As a drummer myself, I must say it is beyond refreshing and inspiring to hear Paice absolutely holding down the groove flawlessly at nearly 75 years old. He still has that signature flare and feel to his playing all these years later and shows no signs of slowing down. For me personally, the most important aspect of this album is that it doesn't feel like a retread or rip-off of Deep Purple as some may claim. As I stated earlier, it feels like an original blues rock album, influenced by the sounds of Deep Purple and designed to carry on their mighty legacy for years to come.
