Imperial State Electric is a rock band founded by former front man of The Hellacopters Nicke Andersson (vocals and guitar), Dolph de Borst (vocals, bass), Tobias Egge (vocals, guitar) and Thomas Eriksson (drums). The band released their self-titled album March 28, 2010.After the break-up of The Hellacopters in 2008, Andersson started to work on a solo album, recording all instruments of eight songs by himself, however Andersson changed his mind and decided that it would be better to form a band.Andersson recruited Dolf de Borst, Tobias Egge and Tomas Eriksson, all of whom he had previously worked with in Cold Ethyl a cover band he formed shortly after the break-up of The Hellacopters.During the recording of the band's self-titled album Andersson also enlisted help from several old friends,including Dregen, Anders Lindström, Robert Pehrsson and Neil Leyton. While Andersson insists that Imperial State Electric is a band and not a solo career or a side project he also acknowledges the fact that the band might have a revolving line-up of members including himself on drums instead of guitar.

Getting on for 20 years ago the two people that today make up what passes for MVM staff, went to Wolverhampton Civic Hall to watch the much missed Type O Negative. Two things really stick in the memory still about that evening in the mid-90s. There was the late Pete Steele’s suggestion that “if you are going to commit suicide then you should take someone else with you,” then there was the first support. Entombed were there first time that we’d ever seen a band that was approaching Death Metal. Crucial, though, to this review is the fact that their drummer, Nicke Andersson was by then the guitarist in one of this reviewers favourite bands ever, rock n roll monsters, The Hellacopters.A sense of wanderlust was obviously with him even back then. Actually, the best way to sum Andersson up is quite simply this: Whatever he does it’s just about superb. The supergroup he was in with Ginger Wildheart, Supershit 666, yep, that was awesome too. So was the soul band he was formed The Solution, who nailed that genre as good as anyone.He’s now the singer in, and one quarter of, Imperial State Electric and the point in all this is quite simple, Andersson, rather like the aforementioned Wildhearts frontman is one of those blokes who likes to try a lot of things and can’t see why everyone’s not the same. Unlike Ginger, though, he doesn’t really make a bad record.Even allowing for that, “Honk Machine” – the bands fourth album – is pretty special. And rather fantastically, over the course of its half an hour it seems to take all of Andersson’s post-Entombed ideas and chuck them all on one record for the very first time.So it’s got soul on “Walk On By,” it sounds a bit like like later Hellacopters work on “Another Armageddon,” there’s a stab at 1960s rock n roll with “Lost In Losing You” which out sonics The Sonics, there’s even “Just Let Me Know,” which wouldn’t have been out of place on Springsteen’s “The River.”Even here though, on a record that’s as good as this, there are a couple of moments of such jaw-dropping excellence as to set them apart. Here they are the no frills Stones meets Lynyrd Skynyrd freakout of opener “Let Me Throw Me Life Away” – with its key line of “I don’t do what I do to be pleasing you” which arguably sums up not just “Honk Machine” but entire career of the man singing it.Even that track probably has to accept that it’s the closing song that takes the honours. “It Ain’t What You Think (It’s What You Do)” starts off like Led Zep, by the middle it sounds like the world’s best bar band, and by the end it’s crammed In two incredible guitar solos just for good measure.There are more ideas on “Honk Machine” than most bands manage in a career. Hell, there are so many great songs here it almost feels like a double album. It’s not, it’s 11 songs and it’s half an hour or so long. It’s also approaching perfect.Those that have followed the career of Nicke Andersson will not be surprised.

In the press build up to this, the second album in a year from Imperial State Electric, on a story we ran on the site, their main man Nicke Andersson was asked how he made records so quickly.His answer tells you more about the man and his records than any review is ever going to: “We play rock ‘n’ roll music” he said. “If it takes four years to make a rock ‘n’ roll record then you have most likely over analysed an art form that isn’t meant to be analysed at all. You should feel it and to me, this feels real good.”.Subtext: take that Guns n Roses.Last year’s astonishing “Honk Machine” (named after Andersson’s home studio where that, and this, was recoded) was a timely reminder that arguably no one is as good at writing this type of rock n roll as he is. “All Through The Night” is confirmation that few are as varied as Imperial State Electric either.Sure, Andersson has shown this before – The Hellacopters sounded nothing like his soul albums with The Solution, after all – but never before has he been this varied on one record.ISE might actually be the most honest band on Planet Rock too, given that you’d imagine that the four men who make up the band Dolf de Borst: Backing Vocals, Bass, Tobias Egge: Backing Vocals, guitar and Thomas Eriksson: Drums, Percussion all join the singer/guitarist, are all steeped in the music they play.That’s surely the only way you’d get the full-on Phil Spector type wall of sound Soul of the title track (and Springsteen would have killed for this circa The River) and the incredible outpouring of ebullience that is “Get Off The Boo-Hoo Train” which is like Jerry Lee Lewis fronting The Georgia Satellites on the same record.It’s also this whatever happens, happens, attitude that pervades “Break It Down” (a duet with Linn Segolson) and “Read Me Wrong” which are countrified in the way that “Dead Flowers” is and makes that the harmonies of “Over And Over Again” quite so loose limbed.Actually, this slightly different air had been evident since the start. “Empire Of Fire” – which kicks this truly magnificent record off – is unmistakably Andersson, but marches in swinging like it wants to make a point, and as if to emphasise the point, the gorgeous 1960s shimmering acoustics which morph into a Beatles-ish stomp of “No Sleeping” end things in a quite unexpected way.But brilliantly in between there’s some real moments of what we might call the classic Hellacopters late period (that is to say when they throttled back from the outright punk of the first record). “Remove Your Doubt” is brilliant, “Bad Timing” even better and on this track there’s a line that sums the ethos of Imperial State Electric up perfectly: “In my defence, I reckon I was born too late” suggest the lyricsThe feeling of being born after all your favourite bands were at their peak is one that others might empathise with (not least this reviewer) but yet again Nicke Andersson and his band mates have turned this frustration into real gold.And yes, “All Through The Night” feels real good. Damn near perfect in fact.

Driving in the foggy Po Valley could be an interesting experience to say the least; when you have to drive through it for almost three hours to see a rock n’ roll show, it does mean one and one thing only: that band is well worth it.The band in question is Imperial State Electric, brainchild of the iconic punk n’ roll guru Nicke Andersson (Entombed, The Hellacopters, The Hydromatics, The Solution, Death Breath…) who’s bringing, with his trusted comrades, his high voltage verb throughout all Europe. The occasion is the promotion of the brand new album “Reptile Brain Music”, their third release (fourth, if you consider the explosive ep “In Concert!”) in few years; the manifesto of the relentless creative flow of this combo, a four piece so tight and cohesive they seem to play one single big guitar over your head!That’s the overwhelming power of Imperial State Electric, and since I’ve witnessed it first person, I can confirm that’s the ultimate fun concert experience and the guys up there on the stage, they seem to have real fun too. The same euphoric tide pours out from the speakers of your stereo once you put “Reptile Brain Music” on, because this is, hands down, their best release so far.If the first album was more of a solo affair from Nicke Andersson, and the brilliant sophomore effort “Pop War” redefined the rules of power pop for the new millennium, this new piece of work sounds like the quartet has finally found their real dimension: here, all the influences flow naturally and also the more typical traits of The Hellacopters’ style are brought back in the mix, for a final result that is as much melodic as it is riotous and dynamically powerful.If you’re familiar with Nicke’s output throughout the years, you know exactly what to expect: from the Paul Stanley Meets Phantom Of The Stones feel of tracks like “Underwhelmed” and “Stay The Night” (sung by guitarist Tobias Egge), through the punch in the face of the title track (sung by bassist Dolf DeBorst), to the hot wheels ride of the pure Andersson style anthems “Eyes” and “Down In The Bunker”, the album is a fest of rock guitar histrionics and melodic hooks to rave for.When tracks like “Dead Things” marries The Beatles with a southern rock flavour and a twisted dark mood, you know this band has the numbers to not run out of inspiration for the next twenty albums at least.Rock n’ Roll couldn’t be in safer hands with Imperial State Electric, and now, after another three hours in the fog to come back home, I can sleep sweet rock dreams too..
