The band was formed in 1986 by the former American Tears, Touch, and Michael Bolton keyboard player Mark Mangold, and previously unknown vocalist/guitarist Al Fritsch. Mangold was also a successful songwriter, co-writing Cher’s hit, ‘I’ve Found Someone’, along with Bolton. After signing to CBS Records in 1988 their self-titled debut album was released a year later in the USA and featured guest appearances by artists such as multi-instrumentalist Aldo Nova and Bob Kulick of Balance and Meat Loaf fame. The collection of light-edged melodic rock songs, which included a reworking of the Touch classic ‘Don’t You Know What Love Is’, was aimed directly at the American market, but failed to make any significant impact. It sold well on import in the UK, however, prompting the independent Music For Nations label to sign the band for the European market (Mangold reportedly being unhappy at CBS’ marketing attempts). The album was subsequently released in the UK in 1990 and was quickly followed by a club tour. Drivin’ Wheel, a slightly harder-edged album, was released in 1991, preceded by the single ‘Think About Love’, both of which failed to achieve any significant success. Undeterred by the lack of chart success, they toured the UK with FM in 1992 before embarking on sessions for a third album.

Specialized German label AOR Heaven, through their 'AOR Heaven Classix' series, has reissued Digitally Remastered with bonus tracks the first two -and best- DRIVE, SHE SAID albums.This New York based AOR project was initially put together as a solo venture by former American Tears and pomp giants Touch leader, the talented singer, keyboardist and composer Mark Mangold. But soon lead vocalist / multi-instrumentalist Al Fritsch joined the project, and Drive She Said born.Although both play most of the instruments, several first class session cats and artists provided their skills on both records."Drivin' Wheel" was the second effort from Drive She Said, and my favorite. But to be honest, both first records from Mangold / Fritsch are pure Melodic Rock / AOR gems.Follow-up to the majestic self-titled debut, "Drivin' Wheel" is much harder at times which perfectly fits the two main protagonists and their fellow musicians like guitarist Tony Bruno of Danger Danger fame, Canadian melodic rock icon Aldo Nova, From The Fire's bassist Paul St. James, or Fiona & Benny Mardones on backing vocals among others.With a vocal style like a cross between Lou Gramm & Joe Lynn Turner, Al Fritsch's leads soar on all tracks, perfectly complemented by Mangold backing vocal harmonies & keyboard flurries, plus a sharp guitar work of all involved.On songs like "Veil Of Tears", title track "Drivin' Wheel", the diamond "Hard To Hold" (with great guitars by Aldo Nova) or "It Just Keeps Comin" (just check Tony Bruno's awesome guitar solo), Drive She Said sounds quite Melodic Hard, akin Foreigner.But Mangold can't fight with his AOR heart, and the awesome opener "Think Of Love" and the terrific, pure '80s mid-tempo atmosphere of "It's Gonna Take A Miracle" are the highlights. This was even more special of an event than a regular signing as Drive, She Said was the first proper artist that was signed to the label back when it started.Mangold and Fritsch got together and they penned a few sensational classic Melodic Rock / AOR numbers, chock full of marvelous and unforgettable vocal harmonies, as well as looking in the archives for two songs that they hadn't recorded before.Mangold says: 'We tried to write this record as if we were again in the 80's/90's, with the benefit of time and modern recording techniques. In those days you needed to write a "hit" to get signed and carve out an original sound. This record was a challenge because we did not want to clone ourselves, or the many bands that have now have mastered this genre, or be generic. And yet we wanted to keep the record in that same world as the first D,SS record. And of course, we wanted to make it totally over the top! The best album including five bonus tracks.A perfect compilation from the perfect AOR band.This has eveything an AOR record should have.Outstanding songs,fantastic singer, and the great Mangold on his keys.Some of the tunes may have dated a little, but like I said, it really is a strong collection of tunes of the era. The collection also does not out stay it's welcome, as any more tracks may have been a little too much. As it is, it is just right. If those kind of comparisons get your curiosity up, then take a look at these guys and above all else - take a look at this Best Of release as your introduction to the band and their future releases.What a band.MASTERPIECE and A MUST HAVE !!
