Bio:

The new band was culled from over a thousand submissions from a “Jake E. Lee needs a lead singer and drummer Facebook page” Christened “Jake E. Lee’s ‘Red Dragon Cartel” the album is being recorded with such legendary vocalist as Robin Zander from Cheap Trick and original Iron Maiden Vocalist Paul DiAnno, new chart toppers like Maria Brink from “In this Moment” with plenty of tracks just featuring the new permanent members of band for 2013. “The Jake E Lee’s Red Dragon Cartel” is about to blast off. This amazing virtuoso guitarist with his new band will once again grace the rock world with the lights shining even brighter.

Album:

Guitar legend Jake E. Lee, the man behind Badlands and one of Ozzy Osbourne’s finest albums, Bark At The Moon, returned after almost two decades out of the spotlight with his new band RED DRAGON CARTEL, and their self-titled debut released by Frontiers Music. This Japanese Tour Edition, pressed on high quality SHM-CD format, includes the regular bonus track for Japan plus a new bonus for this version titled ‘American Dream’.Clearly standing out from his countless contemporaries, Jake E. Lee first rose to international prominence as Ozzy Osbourne’s sideman during the raucous ’80s hard rock movement. Lee’s signature guitar work and songwriting contributions on such million-selling albums as Bark At The Moon and The Ultimate Sin helped further to cement Osbourne’s cred during that decade, while Lee, himself, soared into the stratosphere as rock’s latest guitar hero.Following his tenure with Ozzy, Lee went on to create arguably his best and most compelling music in the late ’80s and early ’90s with the short-lived hard blues based outfit Badlands. In recent years, the reclusive icon has resurfaced only occasionally appearing on various tribute records and solo releases. In 2014, the famed guitarist returned with this new project, Red Dragon Cartel.Recorded at the Hideout Recording Studio in Las Vegas, the self-titled debut from Red Dragon Cartel was produced by Lee and bassist Ronnie Mancuso (Beggars and Thieves), then mixed and mastered by Kevin Churko (Hinder, Ozzy). The band is completed with frontman Darren James Smith and drummer Jonas Fairley. However, the recording session was also gifted with some guest talent including singers Paul Di’Anno (ex-Iron Maiden), Robin Zander of Cheap Trick, as well as females Sass Jordan and Maria Brink (In This Moment), and Five Finger Death Punch’s Jeremy Spencer adding vocals. And how Red Dragon Cartel sounds? In a few words: pretty darn terrific. It’s generally straight up melodic heavy rock with a modern tone, driven by Lee’s wall of riffage and wicked good guitar solos. Additionally, underneath all this is some serious groove getting your toe tapping, while you’re banging your head.Perhaps the only Ozzy-like track on the disc is opener and lead single “Deceived” (a highlight), which possesses a no-holds-barred Bark At The Moon melodic energy. Along with “Shout It Out”, these two hooky, guitar-driven groove monsters make for a powerful pair of openers. But even if the album revolves around Jake E. Lee’s endless talent, it’s interesting to see how each of the guest artists are able to somehow slice off a bit of the Lee pie to showcase their wares. For instance, Zander on the track “Feeder” shines with an almost psychedelic feel and Maria Brink provides a Joan Jett-like moment that is a nice change up on “Big Mouth”.Haunting and melodic, “Fall From The Sky” is another stand-out, as is the bona fide pedal-to-the (old school) metal nugget “Wasted” featuring first Iron Maiden vocalist Paul Di’Anno.Another power point, “War Machine”, lies stylistically somewhere between classic Black Sabbath and modern metal. Additionally, Sass Jordan’s guest vocal on “Redeem Me” helps it to stand out from the rest of the hard-hitting pack as a straight-up and gritty blues rocker – one that’s fabulously reminiscent of Badlands.“Fall From the Sky” is fantastic ballad with superb instrumentation, centered on a strummed guitar pattern while vocalist Smith shines and gives his most passionate performance. However, Lee’s most vicious and enticing riffs (possibly) ever are heard on “Slave”, which is another highlight here. You can hear a terrific palm muted fast picked riff that blends into an arpeggiated verse before slamming into a fist-pumping shout along chorus.Red Dragon Cartel self-titled debut record is an impressive amalgam of Lee’s past output mixed with a modern spin. Blues inspired killer riff driven hard rock with melodic vocals is still the blueprint.Jake’s musos are alive & kickin’. His playing makes this CD a must-own for any fan of ’80s guitar driven rock full of melody, but can also rip your face off with his dynamic speed and virtuosity. In sum, Red Dragon Cartel is a mighty debut – a record that’s as strong as of any from Jake E. Lee’s awe-inspiring 30-year career.

This amazing virtuoso guitarist with his new band will once again grace the rock world with the lights shining even brighter.

Album:

RED DRAGON CARTEL, the band led by former Ozzy Osbourne / Badlands guitarist Jake E. Lee will release its sophomore album "Patina", on November 9 via Frontiers Music. Tomorrow is the release date for this Japanese edition, including a bonus track. The follow-up to Red Dragon Cartel's eponymous 2014 debut, "Patina" marks the group's first release with drummer Phil Varone (ex- Saigon Kick, Skid Row) and bassist Anthony Esposito (Lynch Mob). The band's current lineup is rounded out by singer Darren James Smith (ex- Harem Scarem). With new music being released every week it's very easy to take things for granted and be somewhat spoilt for choice. But 3 or 4 times a year a release is announced that gets the excitement levels racing one such band for me is the rather splendid Red Dragon Cartelwith the guitar maestro Jake E Lee formerly of Ozzy Osbourne Band and the underrated outfit that should have been huge; Badlands.Red Dragon Cartel is really is a powerhouse of a band, and it shows in "Patina".The album starts off with the aptly named “Speedbag” with a chugging riff and solid drums and in hindsight is a strange song to put up first on the album as it has a stop-start feel to it. It's quite original, and in many ways bring to mind the recent Ultraphonic debut.Follow up “Havana” has more of a commercial delivery with the vocals being worthy of special mention, before we are introduced for the first time proper to the gifted talents of Jake E Lee. Darn, the man play some awesome solos to boot.“Crooked Man” starts with a drum fill akin the Eighties, however this is a very modern sounding song with a very modern production. It's a crazy number in its arrangements, not your regular hard rocker but that's part of the delight of the track, with an effective catchy chorus and and beefy bass line.“The Luxury Of Breathing” has to be the grimiest oil soaked song that I have heard in a very long while with Lee’s guitar so down tuned it rumbles like a pre-volcanic explosion. Nice harmonica accompanies the track as it moves along mid-paced then a stunning short blues solo is steam rolled into place by a solo that shreds the song over the finish line.I found "Bitter" quite reminiscent of Badlands, a classic rocker with an stupendous Lee work both in rhythm and lead guitar.“Chasing Ghosts” with its steady opening bass line has a psychedelic feel, and with vocals that have been deliberately distorted works remarkably well, with Varone being given free reign to smash the hell out of his drum kit.One thing that grabs my attention with all the tracks on this release is the amount of detail that goes into all the songs with so much in the background to keep the listener entertained.“My Beautiful Mess” with its different rhythm and background tambourine is very interesting as it has parts fusion / part blues all within its 5 and a half minutes running time. Never gaining a great deal of pace this track is so weird yet so wonderful and like the whole album so unpredictable.“Ink and Water” rounds the album off and is easily the catchiest hard rocker here, it mix late Seventies magic with modern hard rock, more classic rock I'd said in a Black Country Communion vein.Japanese edition bonus track is a re-work of Havana, re-titled "Havana B.C.", with the addition of acoustic guitars, cellos, and percussion. It's not titled 'acoustic version', because there's some slightly different arrangements. It's a great version, and a showcase of Red Dragon's Cartel versatility. If bluesy hard rock is your cup of tea then look no further than this fantastic sounding full throttle classic rockin' album titled "Patina".However, and here's the plus, Red Dragon Cartel is not your regular band in this genre. Jake and the guys always try something different, and you don't know what to expect in the next song. Of course the entertaining factor is intact; the catchy riffs and melodic vocals are all over the LP.I am really happy to hear Jake E. Lee making such original rock music 2018, also seeing legendary producer Max Norman behind the desk again providing a superb mix with an eye put in the late '80s yet perfectly updated and modern.
