Bio:

Originally METALL has been founded 1982 in the GDR. Beginning 1985 a steady line-up (Thomas Post , Roland Tschech , Uwe Lerach , Ronald Schulze, Sven Rappoldt) has been setup at last which realised some recordings for radio broadcast. These recordings (e.g. Easy Rider & Vulcane der Erde) often ended up on top of radio broadcast hitlists like ‚Beatkiste‘ or ‚Hard ’n Heavy DT 64`! In 1988 METALL changed their name to HEADLESS, again some tracks have been produced and released on Vinyl for the first time. Because of different reasons the band broke up in 1991.Re-start as METALL in August 2013 by co-founder and member Sven Rappoldt (also well known as the owner of the legendary “Halford Metal Bar” in Berlin).Since that time numerous gigs: i.a. Taunus Metal Fest, Rude Open Air oder auch als Opener für Bullet.Early in 2017 the recordings for their first album “Metal Heads” were finished. This album covers the whole range of Heavy Metal with epic tracks like „Riding On The Storm“ up to agressive attacks like „Wrath“! Pure metal from METALL!

Album:

Third time may be the charm for German act Metall. Originally around in the early 80s, they changed names to Headless from 1988-1992 before splitting up. Bassist Sven Rappoldt restarted the band in 2013 with a newer lineup, now back for their third full-length in Chasing the Truth. The seven-year gap between albums took place for numerous reasons: the pandemic for one, plus lineup shuffles in the guitar department (welcome latest guitarist Alexander Reinhold). Will this result in the strongest effort to date – or make things difficult to rise above in a healthy scene bursting with talent? The nine main songs (opener “The Serpent’s Ensemble” a typical atmosphere style intro at 92 seconds that contains a reflective, clean guitar piece) sit in a classic, traditional heavy metal position, a host of early 80s influences shining through in terms of the riff choices, chanting choruses, and semi-energetic rhythm section parts. “Dying Hope” elevates the energy a bit in the double kick, stunted / crunchy riffs which prop up from time to time against the normal mid-tempo power riffs, Joel Stieve-Dawe occasionally reaching those Halford-esque eagle notes when called for. The almost thrash-like intensity seems to be something worth exploring, as the band often finds themselves relying on fairly basic main parts for tracks like “Imminent Strike” and “Heaven’s Burn” which relegate the songs to throwaway numbers even a veteran act like Mystic Prophecy wouldn’t let see the light of day. Visions of Accept and Manowar gallop through the speakers on closer “Heart of Steel” – heroic vocals demanding that unison force of strength to fit the cultural, marching musical components. Many will appreciate the realism captured in these performances – at least you know Metall performs their material from the heart.Chasing the Truth unfortunately wavers between fairly pedestrian traditional metal and semi-power/thrash, definitely from the old school stance. Metall will never be confused for attempting to step into modern waters – yet most will be left feeling a little apathetic, as the talent present doesn’t match the final product.
