Who are Gutter Creek? You're probably asking yourself that, and I'd also never heard of the band before the start of the Doc Gator Records promo campaign. But after checking out the first musical signs on Youtube, I was sure that it was worth diving deeper here.The three band members are all no strangers. Matt Hanchuck on the guitar is known to many from the thrashers Wreck-Defy. Singer Søren Adamsen had a stint with the Danish Artillery for several years. Finally, the trio is missing Derrick Kroll. On the one hand, he already sat behind the shooting gallery live with Wreck-Defy and on the other hand, he drummed with Alphakill for ten years.Since they were unoccupied on bass, only a short way led to former colleague Justin Stear, who also played with Alphakill. That leaves the man for the subtle touches on top. In this case, those are six guitar cherry pies by Doug Piercy. But enough about the composition of the Danish-Canadian band line-up and on to the music.If you collect all the names of the band members, then pure thrash metal should be on the programme. But it's not quite that simple. True, thrash-inspired riffs show up in all angles, but it doesn't get dry and hard. The album exudes an earthy, rocking party music. It has something of Mötley Crüe and W.A.S.P., but always with dark minor tones and lots of muscle!Both the opener At Peace With Misery and the following Never Back Down are hard, driving yet melodic numbers. Each song features thrashy riffs and offers enough space to play air guitar to the guitar solo. If you lack imagination, you can listen to the second track Never Back Down below.That I'm not that far off with the idea of the party is proven by another pre-release track from the album. Admittedly, Hellryder is not a typical track for the debut, but it shows the looseness and the musical roots that Gutter Creek have. Hellryder comes across as a cover version of a typical 1970s rock 'n' roll number. It could have been originally by Sweet or Status Quo, is just fun.The album starts fast and goes off the pace a bit in the middle. A good example is the stomping Nomad or Mesmerized, which has a great chorus. In between there are dark ones like Slipping Through The Scars or the catchy, pugnacious Serpent King. The bouncer Silent Killers closes the arc to the beginning of the album. The band steps on the gas, once more in our asses and again the solos fly around our ears.Conclusion: Gutter Creek show more than just thrashy riffs. The dark atmosphere meets a lot of melody and is spiced up with great guitar solos. This makes the debut palatable for many metalheads. Delicious
