Bio:
Radiohead are an English rock band from Abingdon, Oxfordshire, formed in 1985. The band consists of Thom Yorke (lead vocals, guitar, piano, keyboards), Jonny Greenwood (lead guitar, keyboards, other instruments), Colin Greenwood (bass), Phil Selway (drums, percussion, backing vocals) and Ed O'Brien (guitar, backing vocals). They have worked with producer Nigel Godrich and cover artist Stanley Donwood since 1994.Radiohead released their debut single "Creep" in 1992. It became a worldwide hit after the release of the band's debut album, Pablo Honey (1993). Their popularity and critical standing rose in the United Kingdom with the release of their second album, The Bends (1995). Radiohead's third album, OK Computer (1997), propelled them to international fame; with an expansive sound and themes of modern alienation, it is often acclaimed as a landmark record of the 1990s[10] and one of the best albums of all time.[11][12][13] The group's next album Kid A (2000) marked a dramatic evolution in Radiohead's style, as they incorporated influences from experimental electronic music, 20th-century classical music, krautrock, and jazz. Despite initially dividing fans and critics, Kid A was later named the best album of the decade by Rolling Stone, Pitchfork and the Times.Amnesiac, consisting of tracks recorded during the same sessions as Kid A, was released in 2001. The group's next album, Hail to the Thief (2003), a mix of rock and electronic music with lyrics inspired by the War on Terror. It would be the band's final album for their record label, EMI; their subsequent releases have been self-released. Radiohead released their seventh album, In Rainbows (2007), as a download for which customers could set their own price, to critical and chart success. Their eighth album, The King of Limbs (2011), was an exploration of rhythm and quieter textures. Their ninth album, A Moon Shaped Pool, was released on 8 May 2016.Radiohead have sold more than 30 million albums worldwide.Their work places highly in both listener polls and critics' lists of the best music of the 1990s and 2000s.In 2005, they were ranked 73rd in Rolling Stone's list of "The Greatest Artists of All Time"; Jonny Greenwood (48th) and O'Brien were both included in Rolling Stone's list of greatest guitarists, and Yorke (66th) in their list of greatest singers. In 2009, Rolling Stone readers voted the group the second best artist of the 2000s.
Album:
A Moon Shaped Pool is the ninth studio album by the English rock band Radiohead, produced by Nigel Godrich. It was released as a download on 8 May 2016. CD and LP editions will be released on 17 June 2016, followed by a "special edition" in September, containing two additional tracks.During the tour for their eighth album, The King of Limbs (2011), Radiohead performed several new songs, including the future Moon Shaped Pool tracks "Identikit" and "Ful Stop".In 2012, while on tour, the band recorded a version of "Identikit" and another unidentified song at Jack White's Third Man Records studio. After completing the tour, Radiohead entered hiatus and the band members worked on side projects. In 2013, singer Thom Yorke and long-time producer Nigel Godrich's band Atoms for Peace released a studio album, Amok, and in 2014 Yorke and drummer Philip Selway released their respective second solo albums, Tomorrow's Modern Boxes and Weatherhouse.Guitarist Jonny Greenwood composed film soundtracks, including the Paul Thomas Anderson film Inherent Vice (2014), and worked with classical musicians including the London Contemporary Orchestra. In February 2015, drummer Selway told Drowned in Sound that Radiohead had worked on a new album from September to Christmas 2014, and would resume work that March. In the same month, Greenwood told Pitchfork that Radiohead had changed their methods, "working in limits" and using "very old and very new technology" together. In March 2016, cover artist Stanley Donwood suggested that he and the band had been working in southern France and that the new album was not yet finished.n December 2015, Yorke performed two Moon Shaped Pool songs, "The Numbers" (then known as "Silent Spring") and "Desert Island Disk", at the United Nations Climate Change Conference at Le Trianon in Paris, France.[9] On Christmas Day 2015, Radiohead released a new song, "Spectre", on the audio streaming site SoundCloud. It was written for the James Bond film of the same name, but went unused.Several Moon Shaped Pool tracks were written some time before the album's release. "True Love Waits" dates to at least 1995, and was performed occasionally since; a live version was released on the live album I Might Be Wrong (2001).Godrich said of the song in 2012: "We tried to record it countless times, but it never worked ... To [Yorke's] credit, he needs to feel a song has validation, that it has a reason to exist as a recording. We could do 'True Love Waits' and make it sound like John Mayer. Nobody wants to do that."Radiohead worked on "Burn the Witch" during the sessions for their albums Kid A (2000), Hail to the Thief (2003), and In Rainbows (2007), and lyrics from the song appeared in album artwork and on the Radiohead website.Yorke first performed "Present Tense" (then known as "The Present Tense") in a solo set at the UK Latitude Festival in 2009, and performed it several times afterwards. On 30 April 2016, fans who had previously made orders from Radiohead received embossed cards with lyrics from the album's lead single, "Burn the Witch".On 1 May, Radiohead deleted all content from their website and social media profiles, replacing them with blank images. After releasing several excerpts on Instagram, they released "Burn the Witch" as a download on 3 May, accompanied by a stop-motion animated music video. On 6 May, Radiohead released the second single, "Daydreaming", accompanied by a music video directed by Paul Thomas Anderson; the video was projected in 35 mm film in select theatres. On the same day, Radiohead announced that their ninth album, then untitled, would be released at 7pm BST on 8 May, with physical formats to follow from 17 June via XL Recordings. The album was played in its entirety on BBC Radio 6 Music on the day of release, presented by Tom Robinson.Radiohead will tour in support of the album from May to October 2016, with dates in Europe, North America, and Japan.
