Alias was a cover & original rock band active in 1984-92 in Virginia, USA. During 1990-92, the band was known as Savant.Alias was formed at Virginia Tech (Blacksburg, VA, USA) in late 1983 as a hard rock cover band. Adding alternative and college radio songs to their playlist in the mid-1980s, the band's following grew, first at Virginia Tech and then later in the 1980s in Northern Virginia (near Washington, DC). Alias was "based" at the Zeta Psi fraternity house in Blacksburg, playing many shows there and at legendary Blacksburg bars such as The Balcony, Top of The Stairs, South Main Cafe, and Mr. Fooz.The band was active in 1984-92 at Virginia Tech and also in clubs in Northern Virginia in 1988-92. Also known as "Savant" in 1990-92, their 1990 press kit describes them as a band that "writes and plays innovative, melodic music that doesn't compromise and edge....influences and diverse as Simple Minds and Iron Maiden blend to form a definitive sound for the 1990s."The band invested money made from cover gigs in a series of original demo tapes (CMC Productions, Zebulon, NC) that were shopped to major record labels in the late 80s/early 90s. Each 4 song demo made traction and sparked interest, but the "grunge" revolution of the early 90s diverted record label interest away, and the band went on to pursue other interests.Alias played over 130 live gigs and recorded 27 demo songs in various studios.
