Bio:

Gov't Mule (pronounced Government Mule) is a Southern rock jam band, formed in 1994 as a side project of The Allman Brothers Band by guitarist Warren Haynes and bassist Allen Woody. Fans often refer to Gov't Mule simply as Mule. The band released their debut album, Gov't Mule, in 1995, and have since released an additional nine studio albums, plus numerous EPs and live releases. Gov't Mule has become a staple act at music festivals across North America, with both its members and frequent guests boasting members from other notable bands, adding various funk and blues rock elements to the band's sound. When The Allman Brothers Band reformed in 1989, partially in response to the popularity of their Dreams box set, Warren Haynes was added as a permanent lead guitarist and vocalist, and Allen Woody was recruited as bass guitarist. The two shared a love for 1960s power trios like Cream, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, the James Gang, and Mountain.Haynes, Woody, and drummer Matt Abts, who played with Haynes in Dickey Betts' band, came together as Gov't Mule during Allman Brothers breaks. They released their debut album Gov't Mule, produced by Michael Barbiero, in 1995. Live from Roseland Ballroom was released in 1996, consisting of their 1995 New Year's Eve set opening for Blues Traveler. When The Allman Brothers Band were not forthcoming with any new material, Haynes and Woody left to concentrate full-time on Gov't Mule in 1997. Their second studio effort, Dose, also produced by Barbiero, was released in early 1998. They were joined by members of the Allman Brothers, the Black Crowes, Parliament/Funkadelic and The Derek Trucks Band for their 1998 New Year's Eve concert, released both in a two and four CD version as Live... With a Little Help from Our Friends. The performances exposed some of the bands' influences, covering Neil Young, Free, Traffic, Jimi Hendrix, Little Feat, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Black Sabbath.

Album:

It’s almost impossible to picture Gov’t Mule as plucky upstarts, so pronounced has their influence on Southern rock been since they formed in the early 1990s. The truth is, Warren Haynes and Allen Woody didn’t start out with huge ambitions for their adventurous side project, which they initially saw as a means to fill the downtime between working with the Allman Brothers Band. But when Haynes, Woody, and drummer Matt Abts wandered into Tel-Star Studios in Bradenton, Florida, back in June 1994 and cut their very first demos, something became clear: These guys were going to go as far as their imaginations would take them. Those early, never-before-released demos will finally see the light of day when Evil Teen Records releases a new archival album entitled The Tel-Star Sessions on August 5th. The album showcases the legendary jam rockers in their best form: loud, live, and hungry to prove themselves. Allman Brothers sound engineer Bud Snyder worked with the band at Tel-Star, helping them to hone in on a particular style — a little bit of grunge, a little bit of classic rock — that would define their records for years to come.Originally intended to be the band’s debut album, The Tel-Star Sessions instead presents a 10-song preview of everything they would one day become. To honor these landmark yet previously shelved songs, Evil Teen is giving them the royal treatment; not only will they be available digitally and as a single CD, but they’ll also come in an 180-gram double-vinyl set including a limited edition version with different artwork and white vinyl. As a special preview, Gov’t Mule has shared a cover of ZZ Top’s “Just Got Paid” that will appear on the album. “Early ZZ Top was definitely an influence on the Mule,” Haynes tells Consequence of Sound, explaining why they chose to cover the blues-rock classic. “‘Just Got Paid’ was one of the first covers we worked up when we only knew a handful of songs.” As such, it’s an intimate peek into the band’s early mechanics, and an undeniable testament to their chemistry.

Album:

”Peace… Like A River”, GOV’T MULE’s 12th studio album and follow-up to their chart-topping, Grammy-nominated blues album, Heavy Load Blues, features a 12-song rock collection with guest appearances from Billy Bob Thornton, Celisse, and ZZ TOP’s Billy F Gibbons. The tracks on ”Peace…Like A River” explore the many sides of Gov’t Mule and bring together all of the qualities that have earned the four-piece – Haynes [guitar, vocals], Matt Abts [drums], Danny Louis [keyboards, guitar, and backing vocals], and Jorgen Carlsson [bass] – the beloved stature they enjoy today. Concise songcraft coexists seamlessly with the band’s trademark instrumental journeys. Songs longer than pop convention are somehow still compact: they’re explorative but never meandering; the tunes are at once both wide-ranging and tightly focused. Thematically, the new album explores the positive changes the world has gone through over the past couple of years.Influenced both in his songwriting and playing by what Haynes calls “the golden era of rock, soul, jazz and blues,” Gov’t Mule combines the best and most enduring qualities from all those musical strains to create a timeless piece of art on ”Peace…Like A River” that could have easily come out in the 1970s.Peace…Like A River was recorded during the same sessions as Heavy Load Blues at The Power Station New England with co-producer John Paterno (Elvis Costello, Michael Landau, Bonnie Raitt, Robbie Williams, Los Lobos) alongside Haynes. The albums, however, were created in different rooms, with no shared gear or instruments, keeping the two concurrent projects with their own unique identity and character. One distinguishing difference on Peace…Like A River is the return of friends of the band in important guest roles.Billy F Gibbons’ trademark vocals underscore the tasty ZZ Top textures that inform the humor-infused “Shake Our Way Out,” while Billy Bob Thornton adds his distinctive vocals to “The River Only Flows One Way.”For introductory track “Dreaming Out Loud,” Haynes wanted a Sly and the Family Stone vocal style where different singers take different sections of the song, so he called upon previous collaborators Ruthie Foster, who appeared on backing vocals on Mule’s 2006 album High & Mighty, and longtime friend Ivan Neville.
