Bio:

AVATARIUM has only been “alive” for about one and a half year, but already is the word spreading rapidly about this unique band and it’s special blend of heavy adventurous music. Jethro Tull….Blue Oyster Cult…Sabbath…Rainbow…. It’s all there together with some delicate moments of beauty and frailness that you rarely find in a band these days.In AVATARIUMS music you will also hear tangents of pop and 60’s influences. It all began last winter when Leif needed help to demo a couple of songs he was working on, and Marcus offered to help. Weeks turned into months and a few songs became a full length album that is being mixed as we speak by well known Swedish engineer Ronny Lahti. AVATARIUM the album, came out in november 2013.In early 2014, AVATARIUM felt the need to break new musical ground and, after listening to some old vinyl records, the desire to get closer to this kind of material was born. With a new demo track at hand, Edling was joined by Jidell to work on the song that would be called "All I Want".While the two musicians got deeper into exploring where they want to take the music of AVATARIUM and how they can keep things interesting for themselves and for the fans, yet another song was created, and the idea to make a new EP was fully set.The old spirit comes even more alive, with psychedelic percussionist Michael Blair, who has worked with Tom Waits and Lou Reed, among others, guesting on "All I Want".Commented Jidell: "[Michael] showed up at the studio with a big 'bag of tricks' with metals, crashers, shakers and a lot of strange things which he made sound like if you throw in a punkrocker at Woodstock and feed him with psychedelic pills!" About the new songs, he adds: "We tried to keep things simple and spontaneous during the recordings, something I hope people will be able to hear. Also, I think that Jennie-Ann Smith has reached new levels with the way she sings on both of the new songs!"

Album:

The second album from Avatarium blends Candlemass-style doom metal with Rainbow-inspired hard rock and emotive female vocals to great effect. More rounded and elegant than its self-titled predecessor, ‘The Girl With The Dragon – sorry – Raven Mask’ is a bold, confident and sumptuous offering, with enough depth and texture to absorb the listener throughout its eight tracks.‘The Girl With The Pearl – sorry – Raven Mask’ touches greatness in parts. ‘Pearls And Coffins’, for example, is a thundering, menacing monster, while the final track, ’The Master Thief’ and the enormous ‘The January Sea’ are pretty spectacular too. ‘Run Killer Run’ is an effective and effervescent slab of early Cathedral doom-groove, with maybe a hint of Trouble. It feels kind of wrong to describe doom pioneer Leif Edling as anything other than an innovator, but even when he and his crew are drawing inspiration from others who have gone before, they do it with natural style and power.Elsewhere, the album settles into a more pedestrian pattern. ‘Ghostlight’ is a feminised, rockier version of good old Candlemass, but then it stops and stumbles off to become something less impressive, sucking upon the teat of classic Rainbow but not quite moulding the track it into the massive epic whole it had threatened to become. Fans who relished the jaunty, stop-start quirks of ‘Moonhorse’ from the debut release will undoubtedly love Avatarium’s new album, while those who appreciated the more graceful ‘Deep Well’ or ‘Bird Of Prey’ will find plenty to enjoy too. Each band member’s technical skills are on display to be admired. Guitarist Marcus Jidell dons his Ritchie Blackmore hat and struts his stuff, while keyboard player Carl Westholm is given license to twiddle as many knobs as he can get his hands on, like some kind of gleeful 70s synth wizard. Jennie-Ann Smith’s fragile, ghostly vocals combine with pulsating organs and steel-edged guitar tones to create a rich, compelling soundscape. This site makes no apology for its rose-tinted love affair with Candlemass founder Edling, such has been the enduring impact of the Swedish bass basher’s contribution to metal. ‘The Girl With The Raven Mask’ is a worthy addition to his mighty canon of work. In truth, there are few genuine surprises as this glorious prog-tinged doom opus unfolds, but, typically, you get lots of dark, searing riffs, regal choruses and thoroughbred quality.

Album:

With expectations reaching sky-high, Sweden’s rising stars Avatarium return with their latest long player for Nuclear Blast records. Brainchild of Lief Edling of Swedish doom metal legends Candlemass, the band was founded in 2012 with SOEN guitarist Marcus Jidell. The band is rounded out by vocalist Jennie-Ann Smith, Bassist Mats Rydstrom, Drummer Lars Skold and Keyboardist Carl Westholm. In five brief years Avatarium has released two EP’s and two critically acclaimed albums. With a sound that mixes the classical doom riffing of early Black Sabbath and the energy/inventiveness of Mark II era Deep Purple with softer Blues tones it’s not hard to see why they have risen so fast and far. The real talent in Avatarium’s songwriting is the ability to pay homage to late 60’s vibes and sounds, while at the same time creating a thoroughly modern update of truly classic heavy rock. The album opens with the riffs and organ bursts of “Into The Fire-Into The Storm”, before Jennie-Ann Smith soars in with a clean melodic chorus. From “A bat out of hell” to “A Griffin in flames” the lyrics are reminiscent of epic 70s fantasy imagery, thankfully leaning towards Rainbow and Stormbringer rather than Dungeons and Dragons. “The Starless Sleep” follows a similar groove, with a the sound firmly rooted in classic rock rather than traditional Doom Metal – think a modern, superbly melodic sound build on the firm foundations of Uriah Heap.“Road To Jerusalem” really opens the record up, with a smoldering almost psychedelic guitar groove, before an acoustic prog vibe develops. Although it marks a slight shift away from the more catchy and polished gothic melodies and heavy riffs of earlier songs like “Boneflower” its still a satisfying sound that will surely reward repeated listening.“The Sky At The Bottom Of The Sea” lands just the right side of a late 60’s sound, with the heaviness coming not only from the guitars but from the, distinctly Deep Purple sounding, blast of Hammond Organ. Those were days when one guitar solo per song just wasn’t enough. Thankfully, Jidell has the skill and, more importantly, the taste to craft melodic solos that add, rather than distract from the song. When combined with Jennie-Ann Smith’s singing about “Lighting”, “Mountains” and “Underground lakes” it is gloriously old-school without feeling contrived or re-hashed.In a genre where even the old masters (Blackmore, Hughes) wont take it easy and repeat themselves, Avatarium impress by the sheer craft of their songwriting. Penultimate track “A Kiss (From The End Of The World)” is a perfect example in point starting off with Jidell’s haunting;y beautiful acoustic blues picking that channels early Peter Green, the song kicks into full-blown guitar and Hammond organ led assault, before drifting into the cosmos on Jidell’s intertwining guitar solos. This is music that has been well crafted and lovingly recorded and it shows. The album ends with the almost regal melancholy of the title track “Hurricanes and Halos”, a rising and falling guitar instrumental that slowly drifts off and away. Faults are few and minor: considering the effort that went in to modernizing a classic sound and genre, it might have been nice to pair it with a similarly modern or distinctive album artwork rather than a slightly generic vinyl design ( I can’t imagine Sweden is lacking in talented gothic artists! ),but that’s really a matter of personal taste.Avatarium deliver a very satisfying, old-school album that invites the listener on a journey of epic fantasy and sonic pleasure. Perfect for fans of classic heavy rock, “Hurricanes and Halos” adds yet another gripping chapter to the story of a band that have built an impressively consistent body of work in a fairly brief time.

Album:

Much like how 2017’s Hurricanes and Haloes saw Avatarium diving deeper into their seventies rock influences, their fifth album spends its time exploring the dark folk aspects of their sound. The dusky aura that marked the Swedes’ last couple outings is given full space to breathe here and the heavier riff-driven segments happening with less frequency suggest a near complete move away from their doom metal roots. The electric guitars are used more for tone painting alongside the keyboards and strings, allowing the vocals and acoustic work to take center stage. But like the other shifts that Avatarium has undergone in their decade of activity, the approach is natural and nicely highlights their strengths as musicians. The vocals are the band’s biggest asset as always, a now signature sultry alto serving as the leading focus without getting too domineering. The guitars also do well to fluctuate with the moods at hand and the extra instrumentation is tastefully incorporated, especially the violin and cello. The worst I can say is that the rhythm section still doesn’t feel particularly standout, but the drums still get their spots to put in some extra muscle. The songwriting might also be a little more nebulous than usual, focusing more on atmosphere than direct hooks. The psych-folk elements shine the most on the album’s front half with “A Love Like Ours” starting off on a somber slow burn, the title track following with a more upbeat stride, and “Stockholm” has an almost vignette feel with its cycling builds and rustic vibe. Things get heavier in the back half, coming closer to the vibe of 2019’s The Fire I Long For, with some aggressive chugging on “God is Silent” and “Nocturne.” The closing “Transcendent” is also a nice addition, bringing back the folk in a restrained denouement.Death, Where is Your String may take a little extra time getting used to compared to Avatarium’s other albums, but it’s yet another instance of the band’s consistent high quality in action. The more folk-oriented approach is a sensible move and only heightens the group’s chemistry, making for some stellar textures throughout. It’s hard to tell where this album stands in comparison to the others, especially with the songwriting having more of a grower feel than usual. But knowing my tendency to appreciate their work even more after reviewing it, this could very well end up being one of their best.

About the new songs, he adds: "We tried to keep things simple and spontaneous during the recordings, something I hope people will be able to hear. Also, I think that Jennie-Ann Smith has reached new levels with the way she sings on both of the new songs!"

Album:

On January 24, 2025, the Swedes release their sixth studio album, Between You, God, The Devil & The Dead. As with each of their previous four records, the new opus reveals previously unseen shades and textures in their classic but malleable sound. Full of giant riffs, otherworldly atmosphere and astonishing melodies, Between You, God, The Devil & The Dead has been gestating for the last 18 months.“We’ve been working on this album for one and a half years,” says Jennie-Ann. “Of course, it has been at a slow pace because obviously we have a life together that includes other things as well! But these things take time, writing material that didn’t find its way to the album, and that’s just how it is.”“Eventually we have to set a deadline because otherwise we’d continue forever!” laughs Marcus. “Now we’re older, we have new perspectives on life and music. I think one of the big things for this album, music-wise, is that I’ve started playing much more piano, so I’ve been composing for the album that way. There’s been a focus on classical music, so maybe the album is a little bit influenced by that.”“It’s been very inspiring and things have evolved in a very nice way,” Jennie-Ann notes. “You know, we’re married and we have a son together, so things are a little different for us. But we also grew as a songwriting team. The process has evolved. We had to learn how to write music together. Obviously we come from a background of working with such a master as Leif Edling. He’s been ground-breaking and working alongside him, learning from him, sets the bar quite high, I would say. We feel grateful to him, and now we are learning from each other.” Recorded in Stockholm at DeepWell and The Cave Drumstudio, and mixed by Marcus Jidell, Between You, God, The Devil & The Dead continues Avatarium’s journey towards desolate, soul-drenched perfection. Darker and heavier than their most recent work, it delves back into the crushing but mellifluous doom of their earliest works, while expanding their compositional vision to include everything from ethereal torch songs to thunderous, psychedelic hard rock. From the cataclysmic drama of opener and first single Long Black Waves, to the colossal emotional avalanche of the closing title track, the sixth Avatarium album confirms that this band are brimming with inspiration and have zero interest in repeating themselves.“Maybe some bands like to do that, but we’re not like that,” says Marcus. “We’ve always tried to make every album different. It’s a way for us to explore the music and to push boundaries, but still to keep the musical vibe. This time I wanted more riffs in that classic doomy style. When you write songs you have to follow what happens. We have one song that started like a Paranoid-type song, but now it’s just a great song and it doesn’t sound anything like Paranoid at all! It’s doomy and heavy. That’s just how things go. So I guess we have matured as songwriters. I feel that we’re more confident and just better. It’s no use to make the same album over and over again.”In contrast with the legions of doom purists, Avatarium have always been open to the evolution and expansion of their sound.Between You, God, The Devil & The Dead is the most potent expression of that liberated mindset to date. Musically rich and adventurous, the new songs are also the most poignant and emotionally vital the Swedes have written to date. Dominated by existential tumult and philosophical conundrums, songs like the I See You Better In The Dark and Until Forever & Again are elegant explorations of the human condition, and the meaning of life itself. Eschewing fantasy or conceptual indulgence in favour of a stark but poetic dive into real life challenges, Between You, God, The Devil & The Dead is a fiercely intelligent but unashamedly raw and emotional rollercoaster ride.“It’s not a concept album! I’m not really into that kind of thing,” says Jennie-Ann. “But we’re both very interested in these existential questions. For me it’s a lucky accident that I got into the doom genre. It was not intentional on my part! But my whole life, I’ve been interested in these things, so to have this forum where we can dig into questions of life, death and its meaning is really inspiring. I work as a psychotherapist when I’m not doing Avatarium. I meet a lot of patients who deal with death anxiety, so it’s part of my everyday life, and these questions are constantly in my mind. It’s great to be able to connect with others through these deep and sometimes very difficult questions through music. That’s an amazing thing.” M: “This kind of music, of course, is a good foundation to write about these ideas,” adds Marcus. “The lyrics have to be about something more. It has to have some meaning. Of course I love Sabbath and Deep Purple and all that stuff, but if you compare the music to Bach or Beethoven, it’s quite simple music. It’s fantastic, but then if you put some interesting lyrics to it,you get a little twist in the classic sound, you find your own angle in the lyrics, and you put in some unusual musical elements, and then it’s interesting.” Blessed with a huge, timeless sound and performed with Avatarium’s customary class and meticulous attention to detail,Between You, God, The Devil & The Dead is the culmination of many months of feverish creativity and a dazzling showcase for the chemistry between Jennie-Ann Smith, Marcus Jidell and their band mates, bassist Mats Rydstrom and drummer Andreas Habo Johansson. Another laudable addition to the Avatarium legacy, Between You, God, The Devil & The Dead is an invigorating show of strength from one of heavy music’s most idiosyncratic forces.“This has to be a meaningful experience for us, and when it is, people will know that it’s authentic,” Jennie-Ann concludes.“We’ve done this for ten years, and I really didn’t expect any of this to happen, because I didn’t come from a hard rock background. But I love the pure, raw energy that I’m allowed to take part in, and to contribute to. Obviously I had it in me!” “One of the best things for me is to play guitars extremely loud,” says Marcus. “It’s about being alive. You feel alive inside.Playing a guitar really loud is like controlling a wild horse or something, you know? When you get to play music that you really feel is great, that’s an amazing thing. We’ve been playing for ten years and this is the sixth album, and it’s such a fantastic thing to make a setlist and play our songs. We have a lot to thank Leif Edling for, but now we’ve managed to make some good music ourselves. We have a lot of good songs, but we also have songs that are really fantastic, and that’s an amazing feeling.”
