Bio:

Adrenalin is an American rock band from East Detroit Michigan, that is perhaps best known for their song "Road of the Gypsy," featured in the 1986 film Iron Eagle.Adrenalin is made up of six friends from elementary school (St. Veronica) to high school (Grosse Pointe North). Brian and Mark Pastoria, Jimmy and Mike Romeo, Bruce Schafer and Mike "Flash" Haggerty started the band in the mid-seventies with the help of lead singer David Larson.Adrenalin created a huge buzz among fans and the music industry alike, as well as quickly earning the respect of musicians such as Bob Seger and Aerosmith.[citation needed] They continually won awards throughout the late '70s and well into the '80s when Marc Gilbert joined the band and were getting radio airplay across the country.Their albums boasted heartland rockers like "Don't Be Lookin Back," "Faraway Eyes," and "Road Of The Gypsy," a song featured in the film, Iron Eagle. Adrenalin was even in rotation when MTV was still a fledgling station that actually played music videos. They produced an EP, Don't Be Looking Back in 1983, and two albums, American Heart (1984) and Road of the Gypsy (1986) both produced by Vini Poncia.By the end of Adrenalin's run as a band, the members had coped with the suicide of their original lead singer, David Larson. They were dropped by Polygram during the mid-'80s collapse of MCA records. "Through all of this," remembers Brian Pastoria, "we never considered packing it in. We believed in what we were doing...Giving up was not an option."The Pastoria brothers and the Romeo brothers formed a new band, DC Drive. With the addition of Doug Kahan on bass and Joey Bowen on vocals, DC Drive picked up where Adrenalin left off. They debuted by warming up for Cheap Trick in front of 50,000 fans.During all of these changes, the band realized that they wanted to record and produce themselves. "With a $125,000 recording budget, you can pay per diems (to studios on the East or West Coast) or buy the equipment (yourself)," reasoned Brian Pastoria. The band was soon rewarded for their efforts with a recording deal from Capitol Records/EMI of Canada and began working with famed hard-rock producer, Vini Poncia. The result was a self-titled disk full of rock and soul. As bassist Doug Kahan so gracefully put it, "Imagine the MC5 in bed with the Supremes."The album and the single, "You Need Love," were a success across Detroit and in Canada. In 1993, DC Drive and PR Music garnered many awards and much recognition, including seven nominations and four awards including Best Rock Group and Best Single ("You Need Love") at the Motor City Music Awards. DC Drive disbanded in 1993, when Joey quit to "do his own thing" and Doug went to Nashville.Adrenalin re-united for a show at the Royal Oak Music Theatre on May 25, 2002 with singer Graham Strachan fronting the band.

Album:

"Road Of The Gypsy" by American melodic rockers ADRENALIN, criminally remained unreleased on CD until the very end of 2012 when Yesterrock reissued this cult album for the first time, in a remastered form. The title song "Road Of The Gypsy" is one of those all-time AOR classics. Originally to be found on the soundtrack of the movie 'Iron Eagle', became Adrenalin's biggest hit.Story tells the band put out an EP in 1983 which widespread popularity ultimately led to a deal with the MCA affiliated Rocshire label (Alcatrazz, Citizen Kane, Tony Carey). Thus, Adrenalin’s major label debut, entitled ‘American Heart’, emerged in 1984 and was produced by Vini Poncia (Kiss).MCA had seen enough potential in the group to sign them up to a new deal after the success of the 'Iron Eagle' soundtrack. Bizarrely, the label decided to make Adrenalin's major debut with them including songs from ‘American Heart’ in remixed form and dropping three of the original songs in favour of adding the aforementioned "Road Of The Gypsy" alongside the brand new tracks "Summer Nights" and "Broken Hearted Bound".Apart from the title song (which is really great), the album offers a bunch of lovable radio-friendly Melodic Rock / AOR tunes with the typical mid-eighties FM sound such as the pumping "Broken Hearted Bound", the feel-good "Summer Nights" and "The Kid's Got A Will To Live", the AOR-rock of "The Pressure's On" and the keyboard filled "Photograph (Time Passes On)".Sadly, "Road Of The Gypsy" received very little promotion from MCA for a number of reasons and the band eventually found themselves without a deal and looking for a new vocalist following Marc Gilbert’s departure. After hooking up with ex- Grand Funk Railroad’s Mark Farner for a while,Adrenalin morph into DC Drive, another good act from the era."Road Of The Gypsy" was extremely hard to find (only vinyl & cassette) for years, and although many unofficial bootleg CD's appeared, all sounded terribly bad. Now, this stupendous Yesterrock remaster - taken from the original master tapes - makes justice to this long lost gem. Seriously, the sound obtained is incredibly pristine and crisp, handled by talented Robert Papst (Dominoe mastermind) behind the desk. All who polished '80s American MR / AOR, this reissue is a must have.

Album:

Michigan Hall Of Fame Inductees ADRENALIN were a seven-piece arena rock group founded in the Seventies, they put out several singles and heavily toured the area. They released an EP in 1981 with a video aired on MTV which widespread popularity ultimately led to a deal with the MCA affiliated label Rocshire Records.Produced by KISS-related Vini Poncia, ADRENALIN debut album entitled ‘American Heart’ was ready in 1983, but ultimately released for Christmas 1984, that’s why many people mention ‘American Heart’ as a 1985 release.Musically ADRENALIN deliver here a first half of the ’80s sounding AOR / Melodic Rock, with rock&pop energy. There’s a strong FOREIGNER feel on some songs, on others the ‘happy’ side of TOTO (those pianos, you know), and even a bit of JOURNEY. You can hear Poncia’s hand all over the record.Songs like ‘The Pressure’s On’, ‘Photograph (Time Passes On)’, ‘Michael’, ‘Faraway Eyes'(#28 in the U.S. Rock Tracks), ‘Northern Shores’ are very melodic, catchy, and radio ready.‘American Heart’ never was reissued on CD due to legal troubles (read below) but now finally is being available 2026 on CD and vinyl, with a fine remastering job. While on tour in Texas, following the 1981 EP’s release, Adrenalin signed with Rocshire Records, a subsidiary of MCA. This led to Vini Poncia working with the band in the studio at the Boogie Hotel, a studio owned by the band FOGHAT and located in a large Victorian mansion in Port Jefferson, New York.Poncia had already enjoyed a successful career as a performer with the Trade Winds who scored a big hit single in 1965 with “New York Is A Lonely Town”. In the 70s, Poncia became Ringo Starr’s co-writer and appeared on several of Ringo’s albums. Poncia also co-wrote Leo Sayer’s 1977 # 1 hit, “You Make Me Feel Like Dancing” and produced the solo record of PETER CRISS.Vini Poncia was very skilled at bringing out the best in the artists he worked with. The band were nervous because of his association with one of the Beatles but found him to be a very down-to-earth guy in the Boogie Hotel where they recorded the “American Heart” album in six weeks. They then traveled to the Rocshire Studios in Anaheim, California to mix the LP.With the Rocshire label behind them, ADRENALIN was now opening for CHEAP TRICK, .38 SPECIAL, AEROSMITH, and BOB SEGER on big concert tours. Because they featured both a saxophone and keyboards, Adrenalin was labeled primarily as a “Heartland Rock and Roll Band”, along the lines of the Silver Bullet Band and the E Street Band.Things were rolling along nicely, and “American Heart” was selling well enough to be on the same Billboard AOR charts as records by Springsteen, Scandal, and Huey Lewis & The News. Then, out of the blue, the wife of the owner of Rocshire Records was caught in a $15 million embezzlement scam involving Hughes Aircraft.Since the Rocshire label was in both her name and her husband’s, the government seized everything, including Adrenalin’s album and its single “Faraway Eyes”, as assets; and things ground to a screeching halt. All of the company’s discs were placed in receivership and nothing was shipped to record stores from that point on. Guitarist Flash Haggerty remembered that it was a very frustrating time for the band. The Feds confiscated the ADRENALIN’s master tapes since they were part of Rocshire’s assets. It took eighteen months of lawyer bills and legal wrangling to get the tapes back. The band carried on during the legal squabbles and wrote another batch of songs and went back to the Boogie Hotel and recorded demos on their own. ADRENALIN played the songs for Poncia, and everyone loved the demo of “Road of the Gypsy”. Shortly thereafter, executive Jimmy Risk was talking to Don Grierson of Capitol Records about signing the band. When Risk discovered that Grierson was involved in a movie project titled Iron Eagle, he suggested that “Road of the Gypsy” would work well in the film.At the same time both the film and its soundtrack were about to be released, Jimmy Risk went over to MCA, Rocshire’s parent company, and told them that Capitol was using one of ADRENALIN’s songs in Iron Eagle and that they were interested in signing the band.Since MCA also liked “Road of the Gypsy”, they suggested that ADRENALIN take seven of the best songs from the stalled “American Heart” LP and combine them the two new songs and put another album out. Thus was born the “Road Of The Gypsy” album, out 1986.The properly titled ”American Heart” speaks for itself – this is U.S. early ’80s Rock plenty of melody, hooks, and feel-good vibe, ready for the radio.A very welcomed reissue. Be aware there’s a fake version circulating the net. This is the real one.
