Bio:

Gloryful was formed in summer 2010 by lead singer Johnny La Bomba and Shredmaster JB. Their 3-track demo “Sedna’s Revenge” gained them a high reputation among the Classic Heavy Metal underground. The band already played numerous shows with bands like Powerwolf, Vicious Rumors, Ordan Ogan, Paul di Anno, High Spirits and Helstar and left screaming crowds longing for their debut album. As a full line-up consisting of advanced and professional musicians like Vito Papotto (guitar), Oliver Karasch (bass) and Hartmut Stoof (drums), they entered the studio in summer 2012 to record their debut album "The Warrior´s Code". They chose legendary Swedish sound alchemist Dan Swanö as their producer. After almost overwhelming responses from all over the globe, Gloryful focused right on time to complete their 2nd album. "Ocean Blade" was released 28.03.2014 via Massacre Records.Meanwhile, outstanding guitarman Adrian Weiss replaced Vittorio Papotto on lead Guitar. Adrian played a lot of important shows and festival-gigs with Gloryful already and is ready ti kick ass with the band now.The band is releasing their 3rd full-length album "END OF THE NIGHT" 26th August 2016 through Massacre Records! The album was mixed and mastered by Charles Greywolf, Kris Verwimp is responsible for the classic cover artwork again.GLORYFUL’s music is not about any clichés or bullshit. It’s just what it is: Heavy Metal!

Album:

I’m often torn as to where my favorite regional power metal scene is; Swedish? US? One thing’s for sure though, whenever I weigh in the vast areas of power metal brilliance across our mother earth, the Germans always rank high. They boast everything I love about the genre; crunchy guitars, good melody, excellent vocals, they have it all. As such, I’m normally keen to hear any German heavy and/or power metal release. Which is good, as up for inspection today are German upstarts Gloryful with their debut album The Warrior’s Code. So, without further ado, let’s see how much glory these guys can pack into under an hour.First things first, any album cover adorned with polar bear-mounted barbarian women is – at least to me – making a promise that the band had better live up to. Fortunately for Gloryful, their brand of Iron Maiden-meets-Grave Digger-via-Running Wild is a lot of fun and A-OK in my book. They boast ample amounts of the aforementioned crunch and melody, and although their lyrics are kind of dumb, The Warrior’s Code is an altogether enjoyable experience.Vocalist Johnny la Bomba could be a sore point for some, and I’d say he sounds like a 2:2:1 mix of Bruce Dickinson, Jioti Parcharidis and Chris Boltendahl, although maybe not as good as any of them. Sometimes he sounds a little stifled, but for the most part his performance is passionate and energetic, and I definitely enjoy it. As I stated earlier, some of the lyrics are kind of dumb: they fall into the “heavy metal is the law”, poser killing, Manowarrior territory. If you enjoy this kind of thing, then it won’t be a problem, although if you don’t, the lyrics could come off as a little annoying. As for the performances, well, I’ll guarantee you’ve heard these chord progressions and riffs a hundred times or more. Luckily, Gloryful brandishes these with a burning intensity, and the vast majority of the riffs, rhythms, and lead guitars hit the mark well. In particular, I’d say the lead guitars are particularly impressive and enjoyable, taking most inspiration from Iron Maiden’s eighties run.On the whole, I’ve enjoyed this album a fair bit. Gloryful definitely has the heavier, German approach to power metal down well, and whilst certainly wearing their Maiden influence on their sleeve, they never become too derivative. This isn’t anything new or groundbreaking, but if you enjoy good, old-fashioned heavy/power metal, then I can pretty much guarantee you’ll get a fair amount of mileage from The Warrior’s Code. Maybe not packed to the brim with the power metal glory their name might suggest, but without a doubt a solid debut and certainly worth a few listens. Recommended!

Album:

If 2013's The Warrior's Code was Gloryful sticking their toes tentatively into the crunchy Power Metal pool, 2014's Ocean Blade is a back one-and-a-half somersault off the high diving board. It is that much of a step forward from the debut. Everything is improved, especially the songwriting. The foundation remains the same; crunchy riffs, speedy drums and muscular vocals, all bristling with energy like the coils of a snake ready to strike. Ocean Blade opens and closes with instrumentals but almost every song in between brings the goods. "Ocean Blade" is a double-kick rocker sure to have you reaching for the air guitar while "Cradle of Heroes," with its anthemic chorus, is tailor-made for the live setting. I can almost hear the crowd chanting "THE CRADLE OF HEROES!" along with singer Johnny La Bomba. Speaking of La Bomba, he has stepped up his performance in a big way and the occasional flat singing of the debut has been remedied. In my review of The Warrior's Code, I said he wasn't at the level of David Defeis, but on Ocean Blade, when he hits the high notes, he comes pretty close to the Virgin Steele front man. Shredmaster J.B. and Vito Papotto again make up a potent twin-guitar attack.Ocean Blade is a solid album from start to finish. It isn't particularly original but I can't see fans of bands like Ravage, Paragon and even Virgin Steele not eating it up.

Album:

Third full-length for German metal outfit that's somewhere between traditional (in its best moments, think Majesty/Manowar) and third division Teutonic power metal. The speedy “This Means War” kicks things off on the right note. Tongue firmly in cheek “(We Are) The Glorriors” is a brothers in arms call to battle, not unlike “Hail To The King”, which is just missing a hail & kill chant to remind people of upstate New York. However, the acoustic, tambourine/violin accompanied title track has a folky, Celtic sea chantey feel about it. Wayward appearance of keyboard flourishes on “For Victory”. Not sure about the wisdom of a slow to mid-paced gallop for a tune called “On Fire”, but the nine tracks end, much as they began, with a spirited “Rise Of The Sacred Star”. Their location (in the German metal hotbed) obviously helped secure a label deal, but if these guys were in North America, they'd be struggling for recognition. Nothing bad, just nothing inherently compelling to hear, either, beyond the Man-o-worship.

Line Up:

Johnny la Bomba - Vocals (Nyari, V8 - The Army of Johnnys, ex-I Despise)

Album:

Flying the flag of "keep it true" heavy metal, German style, is Gloryful returning with their fourth album, Cult Of Sedna. Still with national label Massacre Records, the new album features the bands most stable personnel since the addition of guitarist Adrian Weiss and bass player Daniel "Danij" Perl in 2014.The music of Cult Of Sedna features Gloryful's faithful interpretation of traditional heavy power metal. Once more you can expect lots of gallop and groove, mucho guitar harmony, oodles of thrilling twin guitar solos, and some rather epic vocal arrangements. Actually, while not uncommon to power metal, Gloryful's vocal arrangements have become a significant aspect of the band's sound. Johnny La Bomba has a fine metal style to his voice, singing clean, melodic, and with some fine range. Yet his voice is then also wrapped in Gloryful's choral-like arrangements. Being a fan of both exceptional vocals and soaring guitar work, Gloryful creates a perfect metal storm for this listener. As for the tunes within Cult Of Sedna, here's a few highlights. With The Hunt and My Sacrifice, you'll find fast and heavy songs that race from the gate. Alternatively, songs such as Desert Stranger, Brothers In Arms or When The Union Calls On Me can have mixed pacing, but also turn on some fine rock-like rhythm and groove. Throughout you'll find an abundance of feisty guitar solos, likely the sin qua non of all true heavy metal. Suffice to say, Cult Of Sedna is another fine album of classic heavy power metal from Gloryful, perhaps their best album to date. Recommended.
