Bio:

Select few professionals are possessed of the skill, passion and sheer tenacity to break record after record in their chosen field. And fewer still can stake that claim in more than one arena. To millions of music lovers, Ted Nugent has carved a permanent place in rock and roll history as the guitar-shredding showman, selling more than 40 million albums, performing more than 6,400 (!) high-octane concerts, and continuing to set attendance records at venues around the globe. From the ground breaking Amboy Dukes' hit "Journey to the Center of the Mind", to classics like "Stranglehold" and "Cat Scratch Fever", Damn Yankees chartbuster "High Enough," and cult classic "Fred Bear”, Ted’s no-holds barred career spans five decades, and has been featured on A&E’s Biography and on VH1’s Behind the Music. Named Detroit's greatest guitar player of all time by readers of MLive!, Nugent performed for 55,000 marines, sailors and families at Camp Pendleton’s Rockin’ the Corps, was honored to join fellow musician Toby Keith on a USO Tour of the Persian Gulf, and has donated in excess of 6000 concerts and backstage passes to individual troops stateside. To millions of citizens, Nugent is the nation’s most outspoken proponent of our first and second Amendment rights, conducting thousands of pro-gun, pro-freedom, pro-America interviews in major media worldwide. He has served continuously on the Board of Directors of the NRA since his initial election in 1995, where he consistently sets records for amassing the highest number of votes received by an individual board member. Nugent is dedicated to preserving our great outdoor heritage for future generations, and along with wife Shemane, regularly hosts hunts for sick and terminally ill children with Hunt of a Lifetime, Hunt for a Cure, and via his own Kamp for Kids. A recipient of myriad commendations from state police, sheriff departments, FBI and police agencies, Nugent has been lauded for his Freedom’s Angels Foundation benefitting our troops, along with work as a national spokesman for D.A.R.E., Big Brothers/Big Sisters and the Pass It On Outdoor Mentors Program.Nugent has been named favorite Hunting Personality by the readers of Outdoors Magazine. He was inducted into the National Bowhunters Hall of Fame, marking the pinnacle of recognition for Nugent as a bona fide Bowhunting Legend of the 21st Century, acknowledged for his skills as an outdoorsman, and for his tireless promotion of bowhunting via his writings for over 40 publications, his New York Times best-sellers Ted, White & Blue: The Nugent Manifesto and God, Guns and Rock ‘n’ Roll, along with Kill It and Grill It, BloodTrails and BloodTrails II, and his award-winning Ted Nugent Spirit of the Wild television show — seen exclusively on Outdoor Channel — where he proudly serves as Ambassador for the network.

Album:

Reviewing a new Ted Nugent album here seems futile. Judging from the overwhelmingly negative Facebook comments on our stories about the “Motor City Madman,” by now most of you have decided that he’s either an a–hole or incapable of making good music anymore. Or both. But just in case there’s a silent majority of Nugent fans out there — or for the benefit of anybody who’s somehow still on the fence about one of rock’s most divisive icons — we’re happy to report that with ‘Shutup&Jam,’ Uncle Ted has delivered an appealing, surprisingly modest record full of catchy guitar riffs and largely devoid of controversial lyrics. Now remember, we said largely. Even though he clearly doesn’t seem to be using it as an insult in any way, it’d probably have been smarter to leave the “I love my barbecue / It’s what the Pollocks do” lyric from ‘I Love My BBQ’ on the cutting room floor. Of course, there’s plenty of patriotic “oohrah” to be found in songs like ‘I Still Believe,’ ‘Never Stop Believing’ and ‘Trample the Weak Hurdle the Dead,’ but it’s only on the latter that Nugent wanders far into Warhawk territory.Besides, let’s do what the album title suggests and focus on the music itself. ‘BBQ’ is a slyly disguised tribute to early Jimi Hendrix, complete with ‘Crosstown Traffic’ “doot doot dooh”s. The first of two different versions of ‘Never Stop Believing’ features the album’s most complex and nuanced songwriting, stretching past six minutes while changing moods and tempos effortlessly. (The blues version that turns up later suits him well, too; it’s easy to see why he included both takes on the album.Other highlights include the upbeat shuffle of ‘Everything Matters’ (which makes perfect use of returning sometimes-lead vocalist Derek St. Holmes), the locomotive instrumental ‘Throttledown’ and the powerful strutting crawl of ‘Semper Fi.’ Nugent and guest star Sammy Hagar also demonstrate strong chemistry on ‘She’s Gone,’ even if you do find yourself wishing for additional lyrics about halfway through the track. Would it be too much to ask for a joint covers album from these two someday soon?Another piece of good news? Unlike nearly every other one of his peers, Nugent remembers how long a gosh-darn album is supposed to be. Even with the second version of ‘Never Stop Believing,’ the whole record races by in less than 50 minutes. In fact, fully half of the songs are wrapped up in under three minutes, just like the old Motown sides that clearly have such a strong influence on Nugent’s best music. Combine that brevity with the overall high songwriting and performance quality on ‘Shutup&Jam’ and guess what? Ted Nugent’s new album not only satisfies, it actually kinda leaves us wanting more!

You can watch it below."All the new songs erupted from nonstop jam sessions just like they always have, intensely inspired by my love and craving of grinding, throttling rhythm driven guitar patters and licks," Nugent told us this summer. "The song titles say it all."He added that he chose to spotlight "The Music Made Me Do It" for the title "not only because it is the most soulful, uppity, energetic, defiant soundtrack to the American Dream, but because it is needed and celebrated now more than ever to counter punch the pathetic soulless pop drivel running amok out there! ... The music made me do it, and I will forever unleash my creations for those real music lovers that still love it like we do."

Album:

Recorded live at the DTE Energy Centre, Detroit on July 4, 2008.Your ‘Uncle’ Ted Nugent is an original, as he’ll constantly assure you. His latest double CD and DVD Motor City Mayhem, recorded at Pine Knob in Michigan, his hometown, marks not only the fourth show of 2008 (when it was recorded), but old Uncle Ted’s 6,000th performance (though how anyone could keep track of this milestone is beyond me). As with everything Ted Nugent does, this show takes off in a big big way. From an opening of the man wailing away on a pretty competent “Star Spangle Banner” with soldiers behind him and a beauty queen popping out of a seven-foot tall red white and blue cake with “6,000th Concert” written across it, to his blistering band — drummer Mick Brown and bassist Greg Smith — plus guest stars to be named later — the Nuge runs through everything you’d ever want to hear. There’s a little-too-fast-for-its-own-good “Motor City Madhouse,” where the band sounds more like Motorhead. “Wango Tango” benefits as much from great backing vocals of Brown and Smith as it lacks from the fact that there’s no second guitar the early tunes kind of plod along. Things pick up a bit with the double whammy of “Dog Eat Dog” and Smith’s lead vocals on “Need You Bad.” Then Nugent calls out his guitar teacher, a man named Joe Podorsek, for a quick instrumental of “Honky Tonk.” Mitch Ryder drummer Johnny “Bee” Badanjek, who can still groove, joins on “Jenny Take A Ride.” It’s only a weak run through “Soul Man” that kills the momentum. Why that was in the set in anyone’s guess. But things really take off during the last five tunes. Nugent brings out Derek St. Holmes, who sang on the landmark Ted Nugent album of 1975. The man plays guitar (we finally get two guitars in the mix to fill out the sound) and sings up a storm on “Hey Baby” and the monumental showstopper “Strangehold.” Nugent really nails the lead here, nearly note for note. “Great White Buffalo,” the encore, is about the only song the group could follow up with. Nugent, decked out in full Indian head dress, really brings the house down. With his cries of “Freedom” (like Mel Gibson in Braveheart), his self-congratulatory boasts, his sizzling lead guitar playing, his lifting of rifles in both hands — Ted Nugent, like him or hate him, is a true maverick who makes his mark on Motor City Mayhem.

Line Up:

Derek St. Holmes – rhythm guitar, lead vocals arrangements and backing vocals

Album:

Regarded as one of the greatest Hard Rock live albums of all time, TED NUGENT‘s “Double Live Gonzo!” is a classic, requested here in its Rock Candy remastered version, not so easy to find.Simply put, this is one of the most electrifying records you’ll ever hear.“Double Live Gonzo!” is one of those incredible ’70s cornerstone live albums that every self respecting rocker should listen to at least once. It’s the album that spawned the name ‘Nashville Pussy’, and houses the definitive live take of ‘Great White Buffalo’.The sound is awesome… why now more than three decades later nobody is able to capture a live show in this quality?Double Live Gonzo! was recorded at multiple shows. With Derek St. Holmes on most lead vocals, Ted and the gang bring the rock and roll noise to the best party in town. All you have to do is hit play and hold on tight. It’s an intimidating track list at first: three songs run over 10 minutes, with the majority over 5:00.There is Terrible Ted on the front cover, covering his ears as if in pain from the powerful feedback contained inside.Ted’s hits are present (‘Catch Scratch Fever’, ‘Stranglehold’, ‘Yank Me Crank Me’) but are overshadowed by more epic rock orgasms. ‘Great White Buffalo’ and its incredibly dexterous riff is the main attraction. Though this song was originally recorded by Nugent’s Amboy Dukes, this live version is the most relevant.Love Ted or hate him, no serious rockers should have to live without ‘Great White Buffalo’ in their collections. It’s all about that riff, which is hard to duplicate but impossible to forget.‘Hibernation’ grandstands with some equally impressive musical chops (as do all the songs). If you are looking for some ‘Wang Dang Sweet Poontang’, then uncle Ted has your prescription: it’s ‘Just What the Doctor Ordered’.Nugent has done a few live albums over the years, but none as beloved as “Double Live Gonzo!”. This serves the needs of the masses looking for some full bluntal Nugentity. His gut-busting guitar playing can’t be touched and the band simply rocks with Derek St. Holmes shining on lead vocals, sometimes sharing them with Ted.“Double Live Gonzo!” isn’t just for guitar players, but guitarists will absolutely dig Ted’s incredible licks and control of feedback. Few guitarists can command the instrument like Ted does.Players will find much to examine, while the average listener can just look forward to a double serving of golden arena live rock. No lyrical messages, just brutal sonic massages. As years went by and my vinyl copy began to become transparent from overplay, I was thrilled when Epic Records finally released “Double Live Gonzo!” on CD many years ago. What a crushing disappointment! The tapes had apparently never been mastered for CD release and sounded like somebody had taken an old cassette and burned it to CD. It was flat, horribly low-leveled and pretty much un-listenable.We had to wait several years but fortunately Rock Candy Records finally did a proper remaster and now “Double Live Gonzo!” sounds terrific.Originally a double-set album, the running time was over the 80 minutes. This reissue was planned in a single-CD so they had to trim a little, especially unnecessary audience noise, claps, shouts, etc.Now “Double Live Gonzo!” rounds 78 minutes and, as far as I can tell, the folks behind the remaster have deleted little, if anything, from the original 2 LP, perhaps recognizing that Ted’s between song banter is as important to this CD as the music itself. This remastering of “Double Live Gonzo!” sounds freaking great. Finally, fans of this classic Ted Nugent album can enjoy it on CD with clear, vibrant sound. Any self-respecting rocker should have a copy.
