While the history of CHARING CROSS goes back into the late eighties, the actual beginning of the band as we know them today, dates back to 1993, when Pascal Zwyssig, the longest member of the current line up, joined the group. During the following years, the history of the Swiss outfit was marked by many line-up changes. During all this time, the band played numerous concerts (club shows, festivals) with some renowned acts such as NAZARETH, SUZIE QUATTRO and SOUL SIRKUS, recorded 4 demos and one EP, until at last in 2009 the current line-up was completed. Peter Hochuli, singer and front man of CHARING CROSS, ensnares the audience with his performance and stage presence. The guitar section, consisting of Pascal Zwyssig and Andy Dormann, convinces with their powerful rhythm sound and virtuous solos. Riodi Halter (drums) and Markus Flury (bass) ensure the matching driving groove, which creates the rhythm fundament of CHARING CROSS.„We are… CHARING CROSS“ – is the name for CHARING CROSS’ first full length album which was produced and mixed by the band itself with mastering done by Dave Ponzio (DPP Studio). The Swiss band Charing Cross comes from Lucerne, and its roots date back to the late '80s, and it was not until 1993 really "serious" was when Pascal Zwyssig joined the lineup. After line-up changes, four demos, one EP and a lot of live performances later emerged 2009, still exists today occupation.Musically there on Pain & Gain 10 rock songs that are somewhere between Bon Jovi, Gotthard, older Sinner and Bonfire on the hardness. But what distinguishes it is positive from Bon Jovi and company that is consistently omitted kitsch of any kind, the guitars have powerful pressure and they explore the boundaries of the genre quite far. That is to say that it has become a really varied album. Clear is all rock, but here there is of blue-oriented songs on quieter pieces to what you would have previously called the stadium rockers everything your heart desires.With "Wake up" you have chosen a opener, the well goes straight into your ear, yet not corny by the melodies sounds. A very nice rocker, who makes the same desire for more. "No Pain No Gain" is then a masher, something reminiscent of the verse of "Black Velvet" by Alannah Myles and then gets a slight crossover touch in the chorus. Even that is both very consistent and at the same time unusual for a rock band. "Let It Rock" has a strong blues strike and has a very straight - it is always clear to the front without any frills, and even if the chorus is not very original, yet it is an honest statement and the song you should listen if only for the great guitar solos at breathtaking speed.In the "Queen Of The Night" there is then a little quieter and even if one uses some clichés here, so there you look at the chorus but some trouble with the melody line to surprise. Also in this song is the lead guitar full throttle what the quieter pieces - together with the refrain - not be degenerated to Kitsch ballad. "White Line Fever" could also be from Motörhead, another straigher Rock'n'Roller who rausnimmt some pace in the chorus. "Welcome To The Show" has a nice chorus, in between one works skillfully with sound collages and even here the solo guitar is a pure joy.In "Still Alive" the pace is somewhat throttled back, but it has also managed to reintegrate it a very catchy chorus so that the song instantly fun, but holds some minor surprises. "Hells Breaking Loose" is a mid-tempo rocker that is indeed made very solid, but can not set special accents. "Crossroads" is the first somewhat weaker song, here I already am doing alone with the text difficult: "Here I am - standing at the Crossroads - sold my soul for rock and roll", that sounds as if you would with Manowar tuition taken in terms of text.What remains: Charing Cross are more of a rock as a metal band here but feel on top and place a playfulness and a high compositional as musical level of the day, that there is no other way for the listener, mitzunicken as benevolent and the mitwippen foot in time to leave. Out tip: "Welcome To The Show" and "Still Alive". What I miss are real hits, but 10 songs of high level are far more than what you got from Bonfire, Bon Jovi and others in recent years, therefore thumbs up!
