Much of the band's early career was affected by bitter feuds with their record company, East West.In the band's turbulent and unpredictable history, band members have regularly been replaced, with the only constant member being the band's founder Ginger (birth name David Walls) - the singer, guitarist, and predominant songwriter. Several band members have appeared in the line-up more than once. The band has also been split up or placed on hiatus by Ginger multiple times. The most recent recording line-up convened in 2006 but went on hiatus in late 2010. Ginger reformed the band once again for a special one-time appearance in December 2012, which has been extended to touring in 2013 and 2014.

P.H.U.Q. is the second full length album by British Rock band The Wildhearts, which was released on 22 May 1995 on East West Records and entered the UK Albums Chart at number 6.Original guitarist/singer CJ was only present for some of the early recording sessions for this album and was later fired by group leader Ginger. Subsequently, some of the album's songs were recorded with only one guitar.It was the band's original vision to follow up Earth vs the Wildhearts with a double album, to include longer, more intricate songs such as "Inglorious" and "Do The Channel Bop." However, lack of support from their record label, EastWest, meant that six songs written by that point were instead released as a fan club-only mini-album, Fishing for Luckies, prior to the release of P.H.U.Q.Ginger has said the title of the album is pronounced "fuck" in the Ask Ginger section of the band's official website.In 2015, The Wildhearts toured the UK and Tokyo, playing the album in its entirety for its 20th anniversary.

Although touted as featuring the ‘classic’ line-up of Ginger, CJ, Ritch Battersby and Danny McCormack, these four made only one album together – the original Fishing For Luckies in 1994. They tried again later that year, but CJ was gone after the initial sessions for what became p.h.u.q. CJ and Ginger smoothed things over in 2001, and Ritch has been back on the drum stool since 2005. So presumably it’s the return of bassist Danny – on stage for the Britrock Must Be Destroyed dates a year ago even though recovering from the amputation of part of his right leg – that has been the catalyst bringing this turbulent band full circle to how they sounded when he first joined in 1991. Ginger reckons that previous album ¡Chutzpah! (2009, with Scott Sorry on bass) was poorly received, but this one deserves a Champagne reception. Whereas ¡Chutzpah! was lyrically brighter and musically drifting into power-pop at times, Renaissance Men gets darker and heavier again. It isn’t gloomy, though. Far from it. The title track is joyous and triumphant: ‘Back in your face again, we’re the Renaissance Men... ARRIBA!/You need us around, you can’t keep a good band down…’ – plus a series of canny rhymes, including probably the first ever chorus to pair ‘DC-10’ with ‘men’. Not just that song, but the whole album takes you back to the feeling you had the first time you heard Turning American; that impossible Beatles/Metallica, angry/funny nexus. It’s the Wildhearts remembering what they do best – and just going for it. It starts at full tilt with Dislocated – which in places sounds like Motörhead, until a prime-cut Ginger bridge gives it away – then crashes, via a howl of feedback, into Let ’Em Go in which a gang chorus sings about rivers of shit. Fine Art Of Deception celebrates lack of commitment with sinister yet customary honesty: ‘Don’t let my proximity mean what it may imply/I’m just working on a way to say goodbye.’ The centre-piece of the album is Diagnosis. The best and longest of the 10 tracks, it builds slowly into a rant about mental health professionals and how they let people down. Ginger launches another brutal attack, this time on the pharmaceutical industry, in Emergency (Fentanyl Babylon), but he’s funnier when referencing drugs in My Kinda Movie and closer Pilo Erection. So, is it as good as Earth Vs The Wildhearts? No. On a par with Fishing For Luckies and p.h.u.q.? Close – and easily the best thing since.

Ginger Wildheart has suggested that he saw this follow-up to 2019’s acclaimed Renaissance Men as an opportunity for his band to “flex our creative muscle”. That appears to be quite some understatement.On the face of it, there are ten 21st Century Love Songs here. But within those tracks are roughly 121 hooks, 68 choruses, 27 gags, 40 swearwords, 99 riffs, 14 daft samples, and probably a partridge in a pear tree somewhere.That said, it’s probably been scared to death by the splenetic intensity of these songs, constructed via a turbo-charged supermarket sweep of styles: snatches of hardcore here, grunge there, a swipe or six from the power-pop aisle, a couple of lurches into thrash, and a crafty pocketing of some rockabilly while the checkout lady wasn’t looking.Even if its endlessly restless feel sometimes resembles particularly hyperactive prog-metal, for the most part it makes every other record released this year sound like hopelessly anodyne easy listening in comparison.Selected highlights are the way Sleepaway pinballs between a lovelorn stadium rock anthem, a Motorhead-esque metal rant, an air-punching blast of power-pop positivity, a rockabilly boogie and a pummelling hardcore chant-along assault, before ending with the stoned, wistful, crooned conclusion: ‘As the dog looked up at the aeroplane, and I laughed at his obvious confusion/ He turned to me and said…fish don’t know they’re in water.’Those six words, spoken in Ginger’s South Shields brogue are an introduction to another potential live staple, You Do You, a stomping, potty-mouthed punk hymn to the times that sneers: ‘Everybody is an expert these days.’A positive reception will also hopefully provide solace for the subject of Sort Your Fucking Shit Out, which addresses ‘David’ (our sometimes struggling frontman’s birth name), before the whole band shout: ‘Oi! Sort it out! If you don’t, you’re a twat!’ Just as much rage is directed outwards, and in equally original fashion, from the opening title track’s tilt at heteronormative modern rock radio to observations like: ‘We are force-fed filth from infancy,’ as he rages on Institutional Submission before introducing the memorable insult ‘c**t by association’.Soon after, on Directions, he notes that ‘the right wing keep dreaming of an autocratic dystopia’. And that’s just skimming the surface of a record so full of energy, anger, humour and artistic invention that it’s clearly in quite a bit of pain.ADHD rock, anyone? A genre The Wildhearts can surely call their own.

British rock’s prodigiously gifted godfather Ginger comes back from the brink with The Wildhearts’ 11th album of songs that are like hits from some delicious drug.We all know that certain words in the English language are overused. The likes of ‘genius’ and ‘unique’ – we say them but don’t always mean them. Ginger Wildheart, however, genuinely means every damn word, and just when you think he surely can’t do it again, can’t rival the alchemic interlocking diversity of music from his long past, the bloody guy goes and does just that.This is the sound of an artist that has navigated the matrix of depression, sought help, found help, and been subsequently revisited by his creative fire, a pumped muscle car that even he struggles to control. This 11th album from The Wildherts (he’s already written the 12th!) speaks for itself in great, glorious gobs of creativity, a scarcely imaginable bridge between the Sex Pistols and Machine Head. ‘Life is the page, and you are the pen,’ our man notes on the typically extraordinary Failure Is The Mother Of Success, a song in three parts, all of which are better than the parts some bands will ever write.Oh sure, you’ll listen to the first four tracks and be ensnared by their addictive lure, the storytelling and melodic power encouraging repeat plays, but you’ll be worrying that the one thing missing is a really ‘obvious’ punk-ish anthem. Then a riotous glitter bomb called Kunce happens; then the even better Blue Moon Over Brinkburn, a vengeful V-sign to his old school, happens. That’s how you write a punk metal classic. The combination of that, with the thrash-meets-doo-wop Maintain Radio Silence and I’ll Be Your Monster’s if-The-Beach-Boys-backed-Andrew WK madness; that’s what makes the world lovely.We could point out that Satanic Rites… isn’t quite the greatest Wildhearts album ever, but it’d be like trying to judge which of Serena Williams’ 23 Grand Slam trophies is the most polished. More importantly, this album is the spectacular proof of one man’s return from pitch-darkness to pitch perfection, so let’s be honest enough to say it and mean it: the unique Ginger Wildheart is a total fucking genius.
