Bio:

Vanilla Fudge is an American rock band known predominantly for their extended rock renderings of contemporary hit songs, most notably "You Keep Me Hangin' On" . The band's original lineup—vocalist/organist Mark Stein, bassist/vocalist Tim Bogert, lead guitarist/vocalist Vince Martell, and drummer/vocalist Carmine Appice—recorded five albums during the years 1966–69, before disbanding in 1970. The band has reunited in various configurations over the years, and is currently operating with three of the four original members, Mark Stein, Vince Martell, and Carmine Appice with Pete Bremy on bass for Tim Bogert who has retired from touring. The band has been cited as "one of the few American links between psychedelia and what soon became heavy metal..Stein and Bogert played in a local band called Rick Martin & The Showmen. The pair were so impressed by the swinging sound and floods of organ of The Rascals they decided to form their own band with Martell and Rick Martin's drummer, Joey Brennan. Originally calling themselves The Pigeons, they changed the name to Vanilla Fudge in 1966, after the replacement of Brennan by Appice.[3] The group was then "discovered" and managed by reputed Lucchese crime family member Phillip Basile, who operated several popular clubs in New York. Their first three albums (Vanilla Fudge, The Beat Goes On, and Renaissance) were produced by Shadow Morton, whom the band met through The Rascals. When Led Zeppelin first toured the USA in early 1969, they supported Vanilla Fudge on some shows. The band's biggest hit was its cover of "You Keep Me Hangin' On," a slowed-down, hard rocking version of a song originally recorded by The Supremes. This version featured Stein's psychedelic-baroque organ intro and Appice's energetic drumming. It was a Top 10 hit in the US and Australia and a Top 20 hit in Britain in 1967.The members of Vanilla Fudge were great admirers of The Beatles, and covered several of their songs including "Ticket to Ride" and "Eleanor Rigby." The self-titled debut album quotes "Strawberry Fields Forever" at the end, with the line "there's nothing to get hung about."According to Ritchie Blackmore and Jon Lord, Vanilla Fudge's organ-heavy sound was a large influence on the UK band Deep Purple, with Blackmore even stating that his band wanted to be a "Vanilla Fudge clone" in its early years.

Album:

One of the greatest and most influential bands ever, Vanilla Fudge is back with a bang. But the truth is, they never really went away.Born 1966 in Long Island, New York, Vanilla Fudge created an immediate stir with their moody extended covers of popular songs of the day. Not only did the band fit right in with the psychedelic climate of the times, but they added something extra and exciting to the enterprising environment. Stately and weighty, Vanilla Fudge threaded their endeavors with improvisational escapades and symphonic measures, leading them to be quite a unique animal. The band definitely invented a style all their own, and are properly regarded godfathers of both progressive rock and heavy metal.Although 1967 through 1970 was when Vanilla Fudge gleaned their biggest success, they reunited on numerous occasions to wild applause. The band’s latest incarnation, which features original members Mark Stein (lead vocals, keyboards), Carmine Appice (drums, vocals) and Vince Martell (guitar, vocals), along with Pete Bremy (bass, vocals), is slated to hit the tour circuit soon in support of a fantastic new album, Spirit of ’67 (due March 3, 2015 via Purple Pyramid) that pays homage to well-known songs of the fabled year.Vanilla Fudge’s funk aspirations rise to the top on brash and bewitching versions of the Spencer Davis Group’s “Gimme Some Lovin'” and the Motown classic, “I Heard It Through The Grapevine,” while the Monkees are saluted on “I’m A Believer,” which snakes and shuffles with skull-crushing grooves and gospel-induced harmonies. Sparked by military drumming, Buffalo Springfield’s “For What It’s Worth” then takes on a quieter tone before developing into a spinning jam. The Rolling Stones would no doubt be impressed by the band’s left-field tweaking of “Ruby Tuesday,” which couples operatic moves with hard-fisted singing and playing, and the Who’s “I Can See For Miles” slings a sliver of jazz figures into a dazzling demonstration of acid-flecked gothic rock reflexes. Remodeled melodies and arrangements, stamped with Vanilla Fudge’s signature haunting touch that twist and stretch the songs like taffy, continue to tickle the ears on Procol Harum’s “A Whiter Shade Of Pale,” Smokey Robinson’s “The Tracks of My Tears” and “The Letter” by the Box Tops. The final cut on the album, “Let’s Pray For Peace,” which was written by Mark Stein, hammers a positive message to a bright and shiny sheen smacking of heart and soul. The energy level on Spirit of ’67 is so edgy and electrifying that it belies the band’s age. It’s easy to hear Vanilla Fudge enjoyed making the album, and their enthusiasm is contagious. These guys are killer musicians whose chemistry is consistently locked and loaded.Powerhouse vocals, escorted by thunderous drums, pounding riffs, Godzilla-sized choruses, doomy rhythms, and keyboards that are alternately gentle and aggressive, sum up the matter driving these pieces. Crammed tight with amazing tics and turns, Spirit of ’67 tells us Vanilla Fudge still has what it requires to stand apart in the crowd. Experimental rock at its finest and freakiest is what you’ll encounter on this gold-star album.

They signed to Atco Records, a division of Atlantic in April 1967 and changed their name at the insistence of Atlantic founder Ahmet Ertegun to Vanilla Fudge. Their radical cover version of The Supremes’ hit “You Keep Me Hanging On” was issued as a single in June 1967. Dominated by the hard hitting approach of their rhythm section and the powerful Hammond organ playing of Mark Stein it became a US top 10 hit. The band’s self-titled debut album was released in August 1967 and was a psychedelic rock tour-de-force, featuring a seven-minute version of ‘You Keep Me Hanging On’, it also featured imaginative cover versions of compositions by The Beatles, The Zombies and Curtis Mayfield among others. Over the next two years, VANILLA FUDGE would record a series of albums that would evolve from psychedelic rock to heavy rock and influence many emerging bands, among them Deep Purple, before disbanding in 1970.This nine CD boxed set has been remastered from the original Atco tapes and features the albums ‘VANILLA FUDGE’ and ‘THE BEAT GOES ON’ (in both mono and stereo versions) and ‘RENAISSANCE’, ‘NEAR THE BEGINNING’ and ‘ROCK & ROLL’. It also features a complete concert recorded at the Fillmore West on New Year’s Eve 1968 / 1969 over two CDS and a host of session out-takes and singles. The set also features an illustrated booklet with new essay featuring exclusive interviews with Mark Stein and Carmine Appice.
