Bio:

Back in the summer of the year 2008, five metalheads met for the first time. Their names are Kevin Portz (vocals), Gernot Gebhard (guitar), Philipp Albert (guitar), Simon Schmitt (bass) and Lukas Didion (drums). Simon and Kevin knew each other from highschool and played cover songs since then. Soon they wanted to write their own songs. The direction was clear: Heavy Metal. They had to find the right people, which led to the befriended guitar duo Phil and Gernot. Soon Lukas crossed their path.In the ides of march 2009, they had found their name: GRAVETY – this consists of grave – mankind’s destiny is clear, we will all end in a grave eventually – and gravity, heaviness. They rehearsed and started to write songs. One of their first songs was named „Keeper of Souls“, which they recorded in an old cinema. This track already showed their interest in fantastic themes, supernatural and horror. After playing a lot of shows in Germany, organizing the Thrash’n’Doom Fest with epic doom masters WHEEL, thrash metal maniacs GODSLAVE and french doomheads SURTR, they crossed the border to France and brought their fascinating live show to Nancy to zombify also french metal fans.2011 they decided to record their first full length album “INTO THE GRAVE” in the SU2 studios together with Phil Hillen. Right before the release of the album they played a big show at Metal Carnival and heated up the crowd for POWERWOLF.The release show with ex-IRON MAIDEN singer Paul Di’Anno was a full success. Many shows followed, but then family plans, the spatial distance of a band member and career changes led to a pause. In 2019 the supernatural entity, known as Cryptor, has risen from the river Saar. Bound to an old grudge he was imprisoned under the water. He was feared in many dimensions and in many forms. Now, that he managed to break his chains, he is restless for the right time to haunt the earth again. He chose the guys from GRAVETY as his bearers of steel.Fueled with power from Cryptor, the undead quintet started to write and record new songs. Cryptor gave the direction: Epic Heavy Metal with songs that lure the listener into a world of sword and sorcery. Once he was a barbarian king and now he wants his tales told through GRAVETY. With new strength the band then recorded “BOW DOWN” between 2019 and 2021 in Tortuga studio owned by Gernot Gebhard.

Album:

Gravety is a band that has already made frequent appearances on our blog thanks to their singer Kevin Portz (read more here). Therefore, the obligatory introduction is omitted here. Only this much: The fans of the Saarlanders had to wait a very, very long time for album number 2: When Into the Grave was released, my friend and colleague Aidan was still in primary school...Stylistically, Gravety have undergone some changes in the past ten years: On their second longplayer Bow Down Thrash doesn't play a role anymore - the quintet dedicates itself to Epic Heavy Metal instead, which has been enormously popular in the underground since the middle/end of the last decade thanks to bands like Eternal Champion and Visigoth.Gravety, however, exude much more underground charm than the two aforementioned epic flagships from the USA - and I mean that in an entirely positive way. The band serves us eight rousing numbers, full of fighting spirit and adventurousness. If you want to dive deep into a mystical fantasy world for a good 40 minutes, Bow Down will undoubtedly serve you excellently. One of the most striking features is the gritty riffing, which we know not least from the aforementioned Eternal Champion. The thundering rhythm fraction also provides numerous adrenaline rushes. Against this background, it is almost impossible to sit still with Bow Down - you simply have to move, even if it might only be enough for a constant head nod after a long working day...A fat plus point on top of that are the clear, quite variable vocals of Kevin: I like his very pleasant vocal colour, which is a nice contrast to the instrumental spectacle. Especially in the quiet passages he sings very soulfully and expressively, the record really gets under your skin and therefore deserves the label "epic".With regard to the songwriting, the very skilful build-up of tension within the individual tracks should be emphasised. The album is never boring. Gravety know without ifs and buts how to make genre fans happy! Although there is a lot of variety, I would have liked to hear one or two acoustic interludes for even more emotional depth - an ingredient that raised Possessed Steel's masterpiece Aedris, my album of the year 2020, to the level of "future classics".The sound is unquestionably positive: Bow Down sounds neither too raw nor too smooth - those responsible have done a great job here. Since Patrick Engel also did the vinyl master, it is certainly worth buying the black gold...Which songs should you check out if you want to get to know Gravety in 2021? Well, THE highlight for me is the in every respect epic "Tower of Ghenjei": The irresistible, majestic chorus reaches (almost!) Atlantean Codex level. This composition, which you will never forget, is one of the strongest genre songs of the year for me. But also the multi-faceted "Unleash the Flame" has a chorus that you can only write if you love epic metal and have internalised it with every fibre of your body. If you also let such a fantastic song from "The Lord of the Rings" universe end with the words "Fly, you fools!", you deserve the virtual Epic Metal Blog Medal of Honour. Conclusion: Bow Down is a must-buy for every fan of hard epic sounds. With the latest releases by Ryghär and Dragonbreath, this disc from Saarland is the best that epic metal has to offer us in the fading year of 2021 (I'll leave epic doom out of it). Actually, Gravety should be excellently received in the Deaf Forever cosmos - at the latest with the Mark Shelton homage "Carry on the Flame", the troupe qualifies for one of the following Keep it True issues.
