In the beginning...In 1984, MASS released their first album, a self-titled EP produced by Jon Mathias. It was recorded at The Record Plant in New York City. The EP sold 10,000 copies in the Boston area alone, and got the attention of record companies.In 1985, the band signed with RCA and released their first major label debut, New Birth, produced by Tony Platt. The 45 single, Do You Love Me, went to Number One at one of the local Boston radio stations and hit Billboard's charts. The video made for that single was in rotation on MTV.In 1987, MASS signed with Enigma and released their third album, Take You Home, produced by John Rollo and MASS. This record sold tens of thousands in the United States as well as England, Japan, and other countries around the world.In 1988, MASS released their fourth record, Voices in the Night, on Enigma. Michael Sweet of the band Stryper was the producer. This CD sold well all over the world too. Songs such as Reach for the Sky, Turn it All Around, and Voices of the Night were available as CD singles. Songs from this CD also appeared on various compilations CD's (What are some of the compilations?). That year, MASS was nominated for Best Heavy Metal Act at the Boston Music Awards.In 2000, MASS released its fifth record titled Mass Best Ones on Fore Reel Records. They continue to have a strong following all over the United States and around the world. Mass continues to write and record powerfully impressive songs with MASS style, driving hard rock with an edge and rocking melodies.In 2001, MASS wrote, performed, and continue to kick it! They completed work on their latest demo and hope to have it released sometime in 2002.In 2002, MASS won a coveted spot at NEMO (the Boston music showcase and industry convention), completed work on their next demo, and produced two songs with Michael Sweet of Stryper!In 2007, MASS re-releases New Birth on CD through Retrospect Records. In 2007, the band Mass released their first CD with new material since 1988.I do not know how a band that has been around since the early 80’s has managed to stay off of my radar for so long. One thing is for sure, I am glad I have found them. Their new disc, Crack of Dawn is a quality piece of melodic rock.Singer Louis D’Augusta reminds of a cross between Tony Harnell and Johnny Gioelli. He is a very good singer, and his clean vocals are a pleasure to my ears. This album tends to go back and fourth between AOR and hard rock. I prefer theRocklahoma2008 harder edged tunes on this disc. My favorites are It’s You, Sweet Lady Jane, and the bonus track Seven Days.While I am not familiar with any of Mass’ previously released music, I have enjoyed Crack of Dawn enough to look for other releases in their catalog of music.

Boston’s hard rock legends Mass have had numerous accomplishments over the years but most notably is the selling of over half a million albums worldwide! Mass are legends in the USA and have a good strong following in Europe where they have released eight studio albums on labels such as A&M, RCA, Enigma and of course Escape Music. They have worked with such producers as Tom Allom (Judas Priest), Jon Mathias (Joe Cocker), Tony Platt (Cheap Trick, Led Zeppelin) and Michael Sweet (Stryper), who has also contributed to this very release. They have toured with Scorpions, Cinderella, Molly Hatchet, Tesla, The Ramones, Kix and Vince Neil to name but a few ...Mass first started recording music in the early eighties and have since then released seven studio recordings and with “When 2 Worlds Collide” this will be their 8th studio album. Their music can only be described as melodic hard rock of the highest order. They certainly have a pedigree in this type of music and they hail from Boston too, home of the band of the very same name! In fact Louis from Mass has sung on the Boston album “Love, Life and Hope”.

Capitalizing the release of the new MASS album, RetroActive Records has reissued the digitally remastered version of the band's 1989 "Voices In The Night", perhaps their most successful LP produced by Stryper's Michael Sweet.Hailing from Boston, Mass formed in the very early Eighties. Originally signed to A&M the band experienced a lot of contractual problems and their first album was eventually shelved. Mass itself released a four track EP simply titled "Mass" in 1984, before the first official album "New Birth" was released on RCA in 1985. No luck over their either as RCA decided not to give them any support.Enigma Records decided to pick up their contract and Mass recorded another EP in 88' (Take You Home), before we're 'up-to-date' with this very album.I guess the style and sound of "Voices In The Night" always will be compared to Stryper, since their vocalist Michael Sweet produced the album, provided background vocals, and more as you'll soon find out.But Sweet was able enough to exploit Mass' members potential, soaring vocals arrangements and classy guitar work. The result was a stellar slice of late '80s melodic hard rock with an edge."Voices In The Night" is a triple threat of hard rockin’ riffs, feel good melodies and elevated vibes. Yes, I do feel good listening to this album and it only seems to become elevated with each passing song.This record blend nicely in with the likes of TNT's 'Tell No Tales', Steelheart, the harder side of Slaughter and of course, Stryper. Mass sold their share of records back in the '80s and even made it on the rotation of a video music network that used to be cool, known as MTV.The vocals of Louis St. August are tailor-made for arenas on this album… and still are in 2018. Where Vince Neil of Mötley Crüe has a pissed-off flair vocally and Tom Keifer of Cinderella always bestows a bluesy vibe with his voice, Louis St. August displays that assured, energetic and commanding vocal style.Louis gives the songs on "Voices In The Night" that elevated atmosphere; it’s his tones, range and notes he hits that dictates the highs you can obviously hear and actually feel.On songs such as the title track and 'Nine Tonight', the tempo is high, the rhythm section grooves, while the guitar of Gene D’Itria crunches out melodic licks and head banging’ riffs. In essence, that can easily sum up this entire album. One song that Gene flat-out shreds on is 'Staying Alive', edgy yet catchy.The chorus in these songs are not just harmonious, they are undeniably sing-along. 'Reach For The Sky' is one song that never fails to have me pumping my fist into the air. Louis makes it sound so easy as he sings 'Carry Your Heart', he more than likely was born with that confidence factor.Carry Your Heart is an edgier song, with a psyche-you-out guitar solo that beckons me to play some vintage air guitar. 'Miles Away' can be pointed out as an anthem on this album, one that can supercharge your hard rock senses into indestructible mode, with its music alone.The ballad 'Chance For Love' is realistically one of the finest of its kind, spanning Hard Rock to Hair Metal, from the mid to late '80s. It's the perfect example that when done with an acute awareness of not going overboard on the sappy meter, a band can achieve excellence with some rockin’ tenderness."Voices In The Night" is one of the strongest US hard rock albums from the late '80s. Seasoned Mass fans already know this, yet new recruits to this band should be informed the following: "Voices In The Night" is an album to be revisited, enjoyed, and rocked out loud.The album originally contained 10 tracks, but this remastered reissue comes with 'Still Of The Night' (original Japan Bonus Track) and the previously unreleased ‘Stevie’.I actually went back to visit my original CD release just to hear the improvements made with this remaster, and I have to say the sound obtained is jut superb.If you think you have heard "Voices In The Night" before, think again. This remaster have vastly improved the original press and made this album brand new once again.

Back in the 1980s, the scene of German Hard Rock was ruled by four bands: Scorpions, Accept and Warlock – most Heavy Metal fans do not need to be introduced to these. But there was one more group to rock the place until 1987 when it suddenly had to disband. In 2016 their bassist and sole constant member Günther Viktor Radny decided to bring the band back to live. By releasing their first album after the rebirth, Mass remind their fans that they have something to prove after over thirty years of silence. Although this album mainly consists of re-recorded versions of the band’s greatest hits, it is still exciting news. Mass are back and here’s their fresh record Still Chained.The music featured on Still Chained can bring many bands to mind: Guns’n’Roses, Deep Purple, Rainbow, Scorpions and Metalium, and the list goes on. This is also the first record by Mass as a five piece band – Radny decided to make the band’s creative output a bit more diverse by inviting Clemens Matejka to play keys – and fair play to him, as now the band represents yet another level of the genuine Hard Rock greatness.Although the production might leave a bit to be desired for those who like things polished, the band probably decided not to go for the modern sound in order to keep the old spirit alive. It does make the listener feel as if they were travelling back in time, although the guitars and bass could have more power to them. The album does not sound like a demo made by a bunch of teenagers, but lack of decent production may put some potential new fans off.The album is certainly full of decent lead parts as far as guitar and keyboards are concerned. Escpecially the second track Straight To Hell and the sixth one titled Devil’s Gate hav some quality organ solos in them. Fans of powerful guitar solos will very likely appreciate Time Runs Out, which is the twelveth song on the album. The band has also a couple of songs that were simply made to sing along with the audience, such as Shoot Out and Cry It Out, but the most exciting composition is the final one titled We Are Back – yes, this is one of the newly written songs. Matthias Pfaller who does the vocals sounds like a mix of Klaus Meine (Scorpions) and Valeriy Kipelov (Aria), which certainly is a very good thing. We Are Back is one of the most exciting songs this album has to offer. Not only music-wise, also because it gives the fans hope that new records featuring new songs will follow.Overall, Still Chained is over an hour of quality Hard Rock that certainly is worth checking. Maybe releasing this album will help Mass regain some of the popularity they enjoyed four decades ago. Also, considering how Günther Viktor Radny is the only member to have been in the band before the break-up, the release of Still Chained may also be seen as a big chance for the newly hired band members to step into the big industry, maybe with their own projects. But for now, let’s hope it is not the last album by Mass.

Album originally released on Medusa Records in 1988, this classic EP is full of hard-charging metallic guitar riffs and powerful melodies that bring to mind bands like Stryper, Barren Cross, Bloodgood, Judas Priest, and TNT! Another version has been released in 2012 through Retroactive Records (Take You Home +1: Retro archives Edition) is digitally remastered by J Powell of Steinhaus and the only version of this brilliant album you will ever need! It even includes an additional bonus track to round out the EP at 7 songs! Expect a smokin' hot disc of high-octane melodic metal that is required required listening for all fans of the 80's hard rock scene! This is a great hard rocking cd. On one of their songs they sound like the Scorpions.

This is the Mass debut album that was originally supposed to be released by A&M Records in 1982 but was shelved until the band gained back the rights to the material in 2010. The originally tracks were produced by Tom Allom.In 1982 the band Axes entered the Criteria Studios in Miami, Florida, together with renowned producer Tom Allom (Judas Priest, Def Leppard), to record their debut album for A&M Records. The boys were merely 19 years old, and thought they had the world at their feet. Unfortunately they were under the mercy of a manager that A&M Records didn't want anything to do with. They shelved the album until the time they showed up with a different manager. The band spent almost 3 years trying to get out of their contract with him, and ended up having to file for bankruptcy. Also the name Axes had to be scrapped. When the band reappeared as Mass, A&M Records were no longer interested, and their debut album remained shelved for almost 30 years!During the early '80's two distinct metal movements emerged. In England you had the NWOBHM scene, and in the US you had the Sunset Strip and the hair metal movement. When Mass recorded 'Fighter' in 1982 the latter scene was about to burst! Mötley Crüe had just released their debut, 'Too Fast For Love', and every major label were looking for similar bands. Soon Ratt, Dokken and Great White ruled the airwaves with songs about long legged blondes and partying all night long! There is no doubt in my mind that Mass would have been one of these pioneering bands if 'Fighter' had been released back in 1982, when it was recorded. Not only would it have been one of the first albums in the genre released via a major label, it is also, in my book anyway, one of the best albums of it's time!Yes, this heavy metal album is nothing short of a masterpiece, filled to the brim with hooks, melodies, shredding guitars and distinct vocals. The production is raw and alive, letting the band shine instead of the producer. Many of these songs are really heavy when compare to contemporary, similar artists. As usual with Mass, the title track sticks out as a favorite with it's infectious chorus and massive melody. Louie's passionate vocals is what sets this band apart from the masses (pun not intended). The 2010 reissue was remastered my J. Powell of Steinhaus Mastering. It brings vital life to the old songs, without loosing the raw energy of the original recording. At least 4 of the songs were later re-recorded for the bands official debut, aptly entitled 'New Birth'. Here they appear in their original form, written by these teenagers from Boston! In the beginning...In 1984, MASS released their first album, a self-titled EP produced by Jon Mathias. It was recorded at The Record Plant in New York City. The EP sold 10,000 copies in the Boston area alone, and got the attention of record companies.In 1985, the band signed with RCA and released their first major label debut, New Birth, produced by Tony Platt. The 45 single, Do You Love Me, went to Number One at one of the local Boston radio stations and hit Billboard's charts. The video made for that single was in rotation on MTV.In 1987, MASS signed with Enigma and released their third album, Take You Home, produced by John Rollo and MASS. This record sold tens of thousands in the United States as well as England, Japan, and other countries around the world.In 1988, MASS released their fourth record, Voices in the Night, on Enigma. Michael Sweet of the band Stryper was the producer. This CD sold well all over the world too. Songs such as Reach for the Sky, Turn it All Around, and Voices of the Night were available as CD singles. Songs from this CD also appeared on various compilations CD's (What are some of the compilations?). That year, MASS was nominated for Best Heavy Metal Act at the Boston Music Awards.In 2000, MASS released its fifth record titled Mass Best Ones on Fore Reel Records. They continue to have a strong following all over the United States and around the world. Mass continues to write and record powerfully impressive songs with MASS style, driving hard rock with an edge and rocking melodies.In 2001, MASS wrote, performed, and continue to kick it! They completed work on their latest demo and hope to have it released sometime in 2002.In 2002, MASS won a coveted spot at NEMO (the Boston music showcase and industry convention), completed work on their next demo, and produced two songs with Michael Sweet of Stryper!In 2007, MASS re-releases New Birth on CD through Retrospect Records. They sign a 5-year record deal with Escape Records and release a new CD titled Crack of Dawn on June 25th!

“Can my faith be gone? Only Heaven knows.” This quote from the first track of Mass’ Sea Of Black, beckons that if your faith involves the revival of the classic 80s Metal sound, you have found a friend in Mass. Mass has been producing their brand of Metal since their debut release in 1984. Sea Of Black is their sixth studio album.The quartet known as Mass hails from, where else, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. They are Louis St. August on vocals, Gene D’Itria on guitar; Michael Palumbo and Joey Vadala on bass and drums respectively. The music itself is raw and pure. The sound resembling that of a band that plays live in the studio.The production however is less than flawless; the drums sound “tin-like” and the vocals were not mixed well. Nonetheless, the greatness of the resulting music far outweighs the lackluster engineering.The vocals of St. August could be matched up note for note with such heavyweights as Don Dokken, Jon Bon Jovi, or Tom Kiefer in their prime. He has an amazing range and the ability to captivate the listener with either the fury of screams or a passionate ballad. D’Itria’s guitar work may not be the fast shredding attack of a George Lynch or a Steve Vai. Rather D’Itria likes to bring you into his realm with a classic “Grunge-esque” style of playing. He does have the ability to burst out some great solos in many of the tracks, none of which will completely blow you away. However, his talent does leave you appreciating his work.Regarding the tracks on Sea Of Black, the album does not really follow a central musical theme. There are fast songs, slow songs, hard rocking songs, melancholy songs, and soft ballads. Because of this, it is hard to label this album to a specific genre. There isn’t really one weak song on this album; however, the flow is hard to follow as you listen from start to finish.The standout tracks are able to shine though as you listen to each one. The opening song “Falling From Grace” will get you energized and ready for more. “Thru The Rain” will give you a steady head banging. “More Than A Friend” will encourage you to get a lighter out, wave it in the air and sing along. Then other tracks like “Ashes To Ashes” and “All That I Need” are both melancholy and uplifting. The best song arguably is the title track “Sea Of Black”. This is a Maiden style track with a catchy chorus that leaves feeling very satisfied that you made it through.One of the most surprising elements of Sea Of Black are the inspirational lyrics. Each song may represent a somewhat different musical style. The lyrics, however, are both uplifting and spiritual. There are several religious references, and each track contains many positive messages.The last page of the CD booklet states the following as a self description of their music; “Music composed to unite the masses and arranged to inspire the individual.” That is indeed a perfect summary of this album. Mass music has a good dose of passion and heart, combined with some heavy Rock and Metal. All of which makes a great album, and definitely worth a listen.
