Bio:

Jake E. Lee (born Jakey Lou Williams; February 15, 1957) is an American musician best known as lead guitarist for Ozzy Osbourne between 1982 and 1987 and later as a member of the heavy metal band Badlands with Ray Gillen. He formed the band Red Dragon Cartel in 2013, and their debut album released in January 2014 entered the Billboard Album Chart at number 69.He has also recorded solo works under his own name—examples being the instrumental album A Fine Pink Mist (1996) and cover album Retraced (2005).In San Diego, Lee formed a band called Teaser, named after Tommy Bolin's debut solo album. Teaser would become the house band at a San Diego all-ages club called Straita Head Sound. In 1980, Lee joined a local heavy metal band called Mickey Ratt, who soon shortened their name to Ratt and relocated to the Sunset Strip of Los Angeles. They released the single "Dr. Rock"/"Drivin on E," which was given away for free to fans at their live shows. The song "Tell the World" was included on the original pressing of the first Metal Massacre compilation album in 1982, a highly influential album which also featured the first recording from Metallica. Not long after arriving in Los Angeles, Lee left Ratt to join a glam metal band called Sexist, reuniting with childhood friend and fellow guitarist Doug Pittam. Approximately eight months later, Lee received an offer to join Rough Cutt after being recommended by drummer and former Ratt bandmate Dave Alford in late 1982.Former Black Sabbath vocalist Ronnie James Dio was putting together a solo project with Jimmy Bain and Vinny Appice and was impressed with Lee after seeing a Rough Cutt show in Los Angeles, and invited the guitarist to join. Though Lee had believed Rough Cutt's future was promising, he felt the offer to join Dio was too good to pass up, though his time in the band would ultimately be short-lived. According to Appice, there were rehearsals with Lee, and recordings of those rehearsals still exist, but nothing more came from this first version of the band. Lee claims that Dio wanted him to play "simple block chords that wouldn't trample on his vocals" and cited creative differences for the split.

Album:

JAKE E. LEE is without a doubt one of the greatest electric guitar heros in Rock. But he not only shone with OZZY and BADLANDS, Jake was part of the American underground when all the thing began. JAKE E. LEE was also member of RATT, ROUGH CUTT, and other illusory projects that were in the early days… Jake E. Lee’s secret treasure studio recordings that we only known in his biography until now are compiled here on this Japanese CD.”Rare Works 1981-2000 [Ultimate Rare Tracks Compilation]” was put together by unofficial Japanese label Zodiac in a limited numbered edition, and packs some awesome unreleased music with good audio quality.Looking back, Jake’s career is truly diverse. Crossed the underground L.A. metal and blossomed with Ozzy. After that, he participated in various projects in addition to the famous BADLANDS. However, there were many other bands / projects that while never saw an official recording release, showcase the talent Jake leave on each song. ”Rare Works 1981-2000” is a compilation of such rare tracks. All studio recordings where you can enjoy all 16 songs of 5 bands with super quality for unreleased stuff. There’s also BADLANDS super rare promo-only single ‘Want To Live With You’, recorded for a Japanese Bank commercial, pressed on promo CD and never on sale. The single is complete, including the instrumental version where Jake shines. The best way to present this rare material is track by track. Let’s get started; Not only BADLANDS with Ray Gillen, but also RATT, ROUGH CUTT, and other illusory projects that were in the early days… Jake E. Lee’s secret treasure studio recordings that he had only known until now in biography.Looking back, Jake’s career is truly diverse. Crossed the LA metal scene of Gunyu Ward and blossomed with Ozzy. After that, I participated in various projects in addition to the famous band BADLANDS. However, most bands/projects did not reach an official album, but they have made a mark on each song. This work is a compilation of such rare tracks. It’s a studio album where you can enjoy all 16 songs of 5 bands with super quality. How deep and decisive this work is. The best way is to introduce individual takes. Let’s get started!

1981: MICKEY RATT (1 song)
First up is RATT, led by Steven Percy. Jake was the guitarist at the time when they were still calling themselves “MICKEY RATT.” Except for Steven, there were no members of the RATT we know – Bob Deleris was on the side guitar, and Matt Sroll & Dave Alford were on the rhythm team, becoming members of ROUGH CUTT in the early days. Jake was also using his last name, “Williams”.Although they did not leave a legitimate recording, Steven later collected the early rare track collection “THE GARAGE TAPE DAYZ 78〜81”.
The song chosen is “Top Secret”, a demo, yet very well recorded and shows the potential of the young dudes.

1981-1982: ROUGH CUTT (2 songs)
Jake and Dave Alford (drums) left RATT in 1981 and joined ROUGH CUTT with the singer Paul Shortino. The band provided two songs “A Little Kindness” and “Used & Abused” to the LA metal compilation “LA’S HOTTEST UNSIGNED ROCK BANDS” released in 1983. This compilation is a super rare item that has never been reissued. The content is truly a treasure. MICKEY RATT demo is great, but here is a completely professional production produced by Ronnie James Dio himself (keyboardist is also Claude Schnell who will later join DIO). Not only the sound but also the song is excellent, strong vocal and guitar performances.

1988-1992: BADLANDS (8 songs)
While in ROUGH CUTT, Jake auditioned for Ozzy and the rest is history. After that BADLANDS born.

1988: 4 demo songs
BADLANDS is the essence of Jake’s Music, bluesy, and heavy. The first four songs are demos for the debut album (only “The Last Time” went to the second LP). These are well known demos, but in this CD were transferred from the tape held by the late Ray Gillen. Very good sounfd quality.

1991-1992: 4 official super rare tracks
Next is a track recorded after the 2nd album “VOODOO HIGHWAY”, a rare piece. The song “Time Goes By” only was released as Japanese CD single.“Want To Live With You” is even more valuable. The song was written by a Japanese friend of the band and is actually a commercial song for a regional bank in Wakayama Prefecture. Promo only CD single, not for sale and distributed to the bank clients as a gift. The last song is “Jade’s Song”, which is familiar from the debut album. Although it was acoustic on the Badlands album, this take is a different with electric guitar added.

1994: WICKED ALLIANCE (4 songs)
After the dissolution of BADLANDS, Jake launched another project. That’s the phantom band WICKED ALLIANCE. The members are former WWIII’s Jimmy Bain & Mandy Lion, plus Ray Luzier of KORN. They made a demo even though they didn’t recorded a proper album. Heavy stuff, as Mandy has a voice quality very similar to Paul Di’Anno, and musically in a more aggressive style (close to Di’Anno band KILLERS era). You can enjoy Jake playing metallic and heavy.

2000: BOURGEOIS PIG (1 song)
This is another short-lived project, BOURGEOIS PIG. This centered on Richard Black & Michael Guy of SHARK ISLAND, the bassist is Tony Franklin of BLUE MURDER, the drums by former GUNS N’ ROSES Matt Sorum. Contains the only, high quality demo of this project, “Calamities Of Vanity”.
