Bio:
Killswitch Engage is an American metalcore band from Westfield, Massachusetts, formed in 1999 after the disbanding of Overcast and Aftershock. Killswitch Engage's current lineup consists of vocalist Jesse Leach, guitarists Joel Stroetzel and Adam Dutkiewicz, bassist Mike D'Antonio, and drummer Justin Foley. The band has released six studio albums and one DVD. Their upcoming seventh album, Incarnate, is scheduled for release on March 11, 2016. Killswitch Engage rose to fame with its 2004 release The End of Heartache, which peaked at number 21 on the Billboard 200, and was certified gold by the RIAA in December 2007 for over 500,000 shipments in the United States. The title track, "The End of Heartache", was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2005 for Best Metal Performance, and a live DVD titled (Set This) World Ablaze was released in 2005. Killswitch Engage has performed at festivals such as Soundwave Festival, Wacken Open Air, Reading and Leeds Festivals, Ozzfest, Download Festival, Rock on the Range, Rock Am Ring, Mayhem Festival, Monsters of Rock, Pointfest, Knotfest and Heavy MTL. The band has sold over four million records in the U.S. and has been considered notable within the New Wave of American Heavy Metal.
Album:
The band stated they’ve worked on at least 17 songs during the recording of Atonement, but as you know only 11 made it to the final product. Nevertheless, I didn’t expect them to release this EP like this. It’s great that it’s out there regardless, because Atonement falls a bit short, and this now-released material helps in giving the album more length it requires to show its quality. Metalcore bands tend to make 30-ish-minute albums. I’m also just happy the band had more material in mind and didn’t shelf it. Also, the EP is fairly long, while the majority of Atonement‘s songs span around three minutes; goes to show the record could have used the length. The first song has to be the most unexpected metalcore song ever, containing viking metal style, or at least melodically. The drums and guitars are on point. However, I think the execution wasn’t the best, but would have been a blast if it ended on Atonement, considering how diverse the material is on that record. Hollow Convictions might be too depressing for the pacing of Atonement, but it’s got a powerful delivery and I would pick it for the album in a heartbeat. It’s got an old school Killswitch Engage style, while bringing in the death growls and the disheartening, slow guitar melodies. Killing of Leviathan has more thrash metal roots to its composition - and I don’t really like when metalcore bands sound like thrash metal (e.g. As I Lay Dying). As you’ve already known by 2013, the band knows how to write best when they add in death growls and awesome grooves to the melodies. The bass also sounded pretty tough. The EP becomes more melodic like the last two records in the second portion and does a fantastic job. Adam also adds in some bizarre screaming in the likes of his first band Aftershock on the fourth song.Basically... I would happily take 80% of this EP and replace half the songs on Atonement. This gives me the impression like we (the fans of the band) missed some significance in that record, and this EP showcased what was missing. I’m not saying Atonement was bad, but as I’ve stated before, that this record is the band’s most diverse material, this new EP actually showcases that. There’s a great balance between the heavier songs, the melodic songs, and the experimental songs. Atonement has showcased that, but to a certain amount. So thank you Killswitch Engage for releasing this incredible material! The best songs are Hollow Convictions, No Devotion, and Prophets of Reason.
